I have installed the SSA5-50 in our family room, 16ft wide by 22ft wide, and it sounds wonderful. Clear and crisp sound on the five channel configuration from the Denon AVR-1912; 90-watt per channel discrete amplifier. I typically run the bar at about -35 to -40 db depending in the source and is more than enough to fill the room. Bass is significantly lacking as expected, but is complimented very nicely with the pro-sub 800.
During install I would recommend installing speaker wire to the binding posts first then attaching the mounting bracket. This will greatly ease installation due to the confined space around the binding posts.
Additionally, I have a 47" LCD sitting above the soundbar and the looks are aesthetically pleasing, so feel confident in going with this over the SSA-42 despite a less than 50" TV. You never know when you will go bigger, but you will never go smaller on the TV.

Engineering Nightmare |

Someday someone at Def Tech will have to explain the engineering nightmare they've created with their stupid mounting bracket for this speaker. I didn't question the brand, quality of speaker, or price. I wanted it and I bought it. I was prepared for the nightmare as I had done my due diligence reading others opinions about the bracket. When I finally was ready to install it, on a shelf not wall, i took the bracket out to my garage and chopped it up with my recip saw. By doing so I was able to use banana plugs and didn't compromise the bracket at all, at least for a shelf application. One would assume the the engineers at Def Tech would have figured this out and resolved it by now. Speaker-GREAT, Hardware-TERRIBLE!

Nice sound, well made, provided best alternative to floor speaker system for our den. Flaw with design of wall bracket (only if used as stabilizing stand without attachment to wall): I choose to let soundbar sit below TV on shelf. The included wall bracket (attaches to back of speaker) should be used with included "feet" to stabilize speaker at desired angle. Unfortunately, if your speaker wire uses bannana plugs....you cannot use the bracket...won't fit / won't work. Cut out for speaker wire not large enough in diameter to accomodate plugs. To utilize bracket, on shelf, you will need something besides straight banna plugs on speaker wire. Note, the space between speaker posts is extremely tight.
Very nice sound...all in all...nice speaker
