Overview Features Details Accessories

Sony's 2006 line of Grand Wega TVs introduces a new screen size — the 46" KDF-46E2000. It's one of the most compact projection HDTVs available, and delivers a beautifully lifelike picture at a much lower price than comparably sized flat-panel TVs.

Grand Wegas are the best-selling rear-projection TVs because they provide a dependably fine picture. Sony gets the colour right by using three high-definition LCD image chips, one for each of the primary colours: red, green, and blue. HDTV programs and DVD movies look spectacular, while lower-quality signals are digitally "upconverted" to near-HD quality. You can even dial in exactly the amount of enhancement to suit your taste.

Sony's innovative "dynamic iris" feature improves contrast and black level by automatically reducing the TV's light output in dark scenes. A circuit continuously samples the brightness content of the video signal and adjusts the iris opening on the fly. Brightness, contrast, and black level are fine-tuned scene by scene for a beautifully balanced picture.

The KDF-46E2000 has a built-in tuner for receiving local over-the-air HDTV broadcasts. Two HDMI inputs also make it easy to connect an HD satellite receiver or high-definition disc player. These extra-versatile inputs can accept a PC connection, too. Plus, you get three component video inputs, including a convenient side-mounted set for a game console or HD camcorder.

This is a great television at a bargain price.  The room I have it in is not very large, so the size is perfect.  Great picture and lots of inputs.  I also bought the matching stand and the two look very sleak together.

Awesome TV, especially at the price point... December-11-06

I'm pretty new to HDTVs, so this review might be useful for other "rookies" thinking of diving into the HDTV marketplace. I've had this TV for a week now, and I'm completely blown away by the performance! I don't have HDTV service...just standard cable and a DVD player about 5 years old. First off, I've had several people ask me, "Why get a High-Def TV if you're not going to get HDTV service?" Honestly, it's still worth it! I replaced a ~5-year old 32" tube TV with this Sony, and the difference is staggering! Normal TV's tend to have "ghosts" around some objects on the screen, whereas this new-tech LCD has none. Standard cable now looks like digital-quality. The myriad of connections has allowed me to connect my DVD player using the component video inputs instead of just composite, and there's a nice difference. Just a sharp, colorful picture all around. The sound is good for a TV, though it shouldn't be compared with a home theater audio system. Now, this is my only down point: To turn the TV's speakers off and route audio to my home theater system, it takes several steps through the nice menu structure. To me, this is a function that should be accessible more easily, since I only turn on my audio system for special shows and movies. Other than that, I'm totally pleased with my purchase, both on the part of Sony and Crutchfield. While this TV is "just" 1280x720 and the big buzz is about the 1920x1080 models, other folks looking for a great TV at a great price should highly consider these Sony KDF's!
