Description Features Crutchfield Hands-on Research

Features

Deck Functions: Deck A is an auto-reverse playback only deck; deck B is an auto-reverse playback and record deck.

Automatic Record Level: The deck will automatically set recording levels when dubbing from deck A to deck B. When recording from an external source, the recording level can be set automatically or manually.

Fading In and Out: The recording level can be gradually increased at the beginning of a recording or gradually decreased at the end of a recording with the touch of a button. This recording function is helpful if you are recording either a live passage or a segment of a long passage and you don't want the track to be cut off abruptly.

Dubbing Speed: Tapes may be dubbed at high or normal speed.

Record Muting: This feature allows you to insert a blank space of 4 seconds (or longer) between each track. This is helpful at playback time, as the blank space is necessary for the Automatic Music Search system to detect the beginning of a track.

Pitch Control: The pitch can be adjusted during playback on Deck A or normal speed dubbing. A rotary knob allows you to increase or decrease the playback speed of a cassette by about +/- 30%. This feature is great for dance and aerobics classes, or for changing the frequency pitch to let you sing along in key.

Two Control A1II inputs: The Control A1II connections provide automatic function selection and synchronized recording when used with compatible Sony receivers, CD players, MiniDisc decks and cassette decks. This is an upgrade to the Control A1 system, although it is still compatible with Control A1.  As of now, this will (1) turn on a compatible receiver and automatically switch it to the right input when the play button is pressed on the cassette deck and (2) allows for synchronized recording. When used with a Sony CD player with Control A1/A1II and peak search this unit will adjust its own recording level.

Nice, but does not equal older decks. May 17, 2009
Reviewer: Bill from Houston, TX
I bought this to replace 2 single cassette decks from the '80s. I can't comment on the dubbing features-don't copy cassettes anymore. And it's better to have 2 seperate decks to copy so you can send the signal through the equalizer. And with this deck an equalizer is a must for recording and playback. The frequency response is limited. You'll have to boost the low bass and high treble to get it to sound close to a CD or LP. That wasn't necessary with my older decks.  But I understand it's an entry level deck-can't complain. Also as with many newer decks there's no record balance or mic jacks. But having a mixer hooked to the stereo takes care of that.  And the tape counters go back to zero when the unit it turned off. I don't know if mine is defective or if they're all that way, but it's annoying.

On a positive note there's many good features-auto reverse with relay play, Dolby B and C HX Pro,  pitch control(but only on playback deck), headphone jack, AMS, but only works if there's at least 2 or 3 seconds between songs.

Nice quality machine February 6, 2009
Reviewer: bob from Park Falls WI
It has been a nice process from ordering to delivery and now using the deck.  I like the easy to use features and the sound quality is excellent.   A lot of extra features for a reasonably priced deck.  I'm delighted that I made the purchase.  I may buy another while they are still available.

Great Tape Deck November 15, 2008
Reviewer: Daryl from Cape Cod, MA
I have used this deck for about one month and have recorded and played back maybe 40 to 60 hours worth.  It replaced another deck I had for over 10 years.  All things considered, this is a great tape deck.  Yes, it doesn't have a mic input or the ability to adjust left & right sounds levels individually, but most of us never used those options any way.  The only other detriment, which I would have loved, is that both "A" and "B" drives could record as well as play back.  I wish Crutchfield stocked it's big brother (TC-WE-675) that had both drives record but maybe they aren't available anymore (Why? because if the one recorder breaks).  I should also point out that there is a "Record Button" and that you can tell whether the "Auto Record Level (ARL)" is active by whether the ARL light is on.  As previous reviews have said, tape decks are hard to find and I like this one so much I'm heavily considering buying another now (except if I can find a new 675) for when this one finally dies.  Don't even consider the other brand that Crutchfield stocks, it's a "No brainer," especially when you compare their specs.  And last, but not least, I've dealt with Crutchfield for more than 25 years and if you don't like the tape deck, Crutchfield is the easiest retailer I have dealt with regarding returns plus their ongoing support.

Sony TC-WE475 October 5, 2008
Reviewer: Rod from Pinehurst, NC
This unit was purchased tr replace a 24 year old unit.  The Sony TC-475 performed well.   It has upgraded features that older tape decks did not have.  You can record one or both sides of a tape.  Playback 1 or 2 tapes, up to 3 hours of listening before you have to get out ouf your chair.  Another good feature is the automatic volume controle when recording from another source.  I would recommend this unit to anyone.  Since tape deks are almost a thing of the past - - SONY has done a great job keeping an old era alive with this unit.

Sony TC-WE475 May 16, 2008
Reviewer: Scott from Union, NJ
This unit has very good (not great) sound reproduction, and has a decent
amount of cassette features.  For the price, it is a fine player/recorder.
[Crutchfield made it very easy to return for full refund my previous recent
purchase of an Onkyo audio cassette deck TA-RW255 with which I was totally
dissatisfied; see my 4-28-08 review of that product.]  It is fortunate Crutchfield
sells this unit, as finding audio cassette decks available for sale is becoming very
difficult.
