Great home theatre is just the start
The Onkyo TX-NR709 is an outstanding home theatre receiver. Of course, with a THX® Select2 Plus™ badge of certification you can expect excellent performance. You also get the latest surround sound options, including Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD™ Master Audio — two high-resolution formats found on many Blu-ray movies. Plus eight HDMI inputs — including one in front for easy access — let you connect all your high-def equipment. And let's not forget that there are two parallel HDMI outputs to connect to your TV and projector. But movies, video games and TV are just the beginning.

Teeming with entertainment options
Just plug your iPod® or thumb drive into the front-panel USB port to get the beat started. Use the Ethernet port to connect the 'NR709 to your broadband home network, or if you have a wireless network, you can use Onkyo's optional Wi-Fi® adapter. Either way, you'll get easy access to the music files stored on your networked computers. Then dive in to thousands of Internet radio stations — so you can tune into Tunisia or dial into Dallas. Your potential playlist just went exponential.

Real ease of use
The 'NR709 comes equipped with Audyssey® sound-shaping tools, to automatically balance and equalize the sound based on your room's acoustics. Plus Dolby® volume maintains optimum dynamics, so gone are the commercial sponsor's surprise attacks of sound. You also get a graphic user interface to make control easy and intuitive with overlays on your TV screen. And you can download a free app from the iTunes® store to use your iPhone® or iPad® as powerful Wi-Fi® system remotes.

Receiver review April-15-12
Reviewer: EricB from Palm Desert, CA
This was my first purchase from Crutchfield - no problems; good price; fast delivery.  Have only lived with the Onkyo for a couple of weeks but so far, so good.  Very adequate power (B&W speakers, Sunfire sub); easy setup; lots of home theater options.

I got this to replace my aging Onkyo tx-sr605. I figured that I would get the same sound and impact that I have enjoyed for the past 5 years, I was wrong. All I did was replace it the rack do the calibration and then sit back. The first thing I notice is a sterile and brittle sound stage (running this through my same set of speakers that I have had for 5 years). I did some more tweaking and got the low bass up but the mid bass just is not there. I played scenes  from moves I have seen 50 times and they sounded "laid back" lacked so much upper and mid bass. I still have some adjusting to do before I decided whether or not to send it back.  I do also have a new set of speakers coming as well so I will see what happens then. At this point it looks like my old one is going back in the rack. Rather have sound quality than features

What I didn't know I was getting has ended up being some of the best things about this receiver.  Could do most of the hookup myself and Crutchfield tech support is always right-on and helpful.  Connected this to my router and now I get Internet streaming radio, Pandora music, and also set my computer up for DNLA server and the receiver connects to that and plays music stored on my PC.  I didn't  buy this for any of that , but now that I have discovered this I am loving all of it.   PLUS it has improved the video quality from my Dish TV box to my TV tremendously.  I didn't think my TV could look so good until I ran the Dish box thru this receiver.  One terrific little thing is the remote has a TV On and TV Off, with one button it turns on the TV , Dish box, and sets receiver to TV.  Off button turns it all off.  A little thing, but great if you have been living with turning three things on and off and switching a receiver to the right input manually.  Dual subwoofer outputs again I didn't know, but improves your sound from your subwoofer.  This also has the center channel out, which I wanted and my advisor knew this unit had it and the 609 did not, so he knew to recommend this one - - that's a bit reason to deal with Crutchfield, they know this stuff when you don't.  Advisor also told me what I needed to get to hookup Zone 2, which is nice to have.  Needless to say the sound options on this are great, it sounds terrific, plenty of power. I got more than i thought with this.

It Launches Nuc's March-24-12

First off I have been a customer Crutchfield since 1974, I well remember the tiny classified ad's in Road & Track magazine. My Onkyo TX-NR709 replaces a 25 year old decrepit Sony AV receiver.  When I unboxed this Onkyo I was impressed by it's weight which is centered in it's impressive power supply.  The Onkyo is the first part of a new Home theater system.  right now I am using is in stereo mode as I make decisions for the rest of the stuff.   I am feeding a set of vintage Polk Monitor 10B's.  I setup a digital feed from my computer to tap into the several terabytes of music and video's that reside there.  To test things out I started with Mars Lasar, wow the clarity, the 10B's are in heaven, Then I put on some classical music and I had to keep telling myself that I didn't have a center speaker hooked up, the Onkyo has superb phasing, fantastic sound stage.  Then I went to the  Orchestral Heavy Metal band NIghtwish.  This is when I found out the Onkyo can launch nuc's I purchased the Polk Monitor 10B's in 1989 in all of those years I have never, ever heard them do what they did when I started NIghtwish Amaranth. A musical fusion explosion, massive undistorted bass this is a testimony to a power supply is up to the job. Crystal clear guitar riffs, vocals at center stage on not swamped by the orchestra, and that orchestra's individual sections, strings, brass, woodwind, percussion all clear in ensemble. Next new speakers, Polk Audio of course.

Just as Expected!! March-18-12

What can I say other than WOW! Bought this to replace my older Onkyo, this receiver exceeded my expectations.  The onscreen display makes setting up much more user friendly,DTS-HD and DOLBY-HD makes a big diffrence in sound seperation (with Klipsch speakers). The remote was self learning for my cable box and blu-ray player. Have not tried the auto speaker setup yet,I like to tweek myself.  As for the HDMI problems others have reported,I did have a problem when turning it on the receiver would be stuck on "HDMI startup". So I did a firmware update and the problem was fixed, hopfully for good.
