Video: Klipsch Reference R-51PM and R-41PM powered speakers

An instant stereo audio upgrade with lots of connections

Heads up!

Welcome to this article from the Crutchfield archives. Have fun reading it, but be aware that the information may be outdated and links may be broken.

Klipsch gives you an all-in-one stereo audio system with their R-51PM and R-41PM powered monitors. They feature Bluetooth for streaming from your phone or tablet, and have a ton of connections for your other gear. There's even a built-in phono preamp, which is why so many of our employees and customers have them sitting proudly next to their turntables.

Hey I'm JR I'm here today with the Klipsch powered monitor speakers. There's two models to choose from, the R-51pm that you see here in front of me with a five and a quarter inch spun copper woofer, and the slightly smaller R-41pm with a 4 inch woofer. Both of them sport the same one inch aluminum tractrix horn tweeter, which sort of gives it that loud and proud Klipsch sound.

These are powered monitors. The 41 have about 35 watts of power per speaker, while the 51 have a full 60 watts of power per speaker. That's plenty of power to fill just about any room with plenty of sound, and it's Klipsch so you know it's going to be loud, clear, in your face great s sound.

Let's talk about what you can connect the speakers to, and it's just about anything. There's all sorts of connections on the back of the right speaker, including an optical input for connecting it to a digital source, and a USB to connect directly to a computer. There is built in Bluetooth so you can stream just about anything from most mobile devices. There is an auxiliary input or a mini jack so you can plug in a portable device, and the analog RCA audio inputs have a switch on it to turn on and off a phono preamp so you can use it with a turntable.

There's also a subwoofer output, but I got to tell you these things have plenty of bass on their own, and go quite loud enough on their own without the subwoofer. But if you need that extra kick, feel free to add the sub make a great 2 channel audio system, no receiver or amplifier needed. All of that is built in, so connect to your computer, Amazon Echo dot, Bluetooth to your phone, whatever you want to connect to it you probably can and let these be your 2-channel audio system. Add the subwoofer if you need that extra bass.

I am a huge fan of Klipsch, I have a Klipsch home theater system, a pair of bookshelf speakers hooked up to my turntable, and a pair of the predecessors to these speakers hooked up to my computer in my office at home. I can't turn them up full volume because there is so much sound, it's way more sound we could possibly need in that room and these new models are more powerful, which means louder, punchier, deeper bass in a slightly smaller cabinet than the ones I have at home, so they made some subtle improvements from last year's model to this year's model and I'm kind of jealous of you folks that are going to be buying these.

So that's the Klipsch R-41pm and the R-51pm. If you have any questions on these powered monitors or any other speakers here at Crutchfield, give us a call, chat with us online, send us an email.
