About the Denon DRA-800H

Eric A.

A workhorse stereo receiver

Stereo receivers tend to look very similar from the front, but the components on the inside and the connections on the back can make a huge difference. The Denon DRA-800H is designed for high performance, featuring a discrete high-current power amplifier that uses a symmetrical layout and a beefy transformer with oxygen-free copper windings. It's also highly versatile: it can play music from digital and analog wired sources, stream wirelessly, and — thanks to a bank of HDMI connections on the back panel — even enhance TV sound.

Denon DRA-800H

The versatile Denon DRA-800H features multiple digital and analog connections.

An impressive array of connections

You'd be hard-pressed to run out of inputs when connecting other components to the DRA-800H. There are five 4K-compatible HDMI inputs with support for HDCP 2.3, plus an HDMI monitor output with ARC support. One coaxial digital and two optical digital inputs on the back of the chassis let you connect digital music sources like a CD player or media streamer. A USB input located on the front panel lets you plug in a thumb drive loaded with digital music files.

Analog music fans haven't been forgotten, not by a long stretch. There are two stereo RCA line-level inputs and a dedicated phono input for connecting a turntable. A stereo RCA line-level output allows you to pass signal to a receiver or amplifier in a second zone. Dual mono outputs for connecting powered subwoofers let you bump up the bass.

Multiple music streaming options

Built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Apple AirPlay 2 allow you to stream music from popular services like Spotify®, Pandora®, Amazon Music, TuneIn, iHeart Radio, Sound Cloud, SiriusXM and TIDAL. Denon's HEOS technology is also built-in, so you can connect wirelessly with compatible components and speakers to create a multi-room system. It will also show up in your player list if you're using Roon (subscription required).

Convenient voice control

For fans of hands-free operation, the DRA-800H is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri and Josh.ai for hands-free voice control.

High-Performance Discrete 2-Channel Amplifier: The Denon DRA-800H stereo network receiver features a custom, discrete high-current power amplifier with symmetrical design and an OFC (oxygen-free copper) winding power transformer. The DRA-800H delivers a 100 watts x 2 channels (into 8-ohms @ 20Hz-20kHz with 08% THD). With low impedance drive capability, it offers greater stability with a wide range of floorstanding and bookshelf loudspeakers for balanced, quality sound.

Experts Sound Engineering: Denon sound engineers use carefully selected HiFi parts, including custom resistors and audio grade capacitors, to tune the stereo receiver. Using the design principles found in Denon award-winning amplifiers, the DRA-800H features a symmetrical layout, double differential DAC circuit and analog preamp circuits that don't interfere with the power supply. The dedicated circuitry with its short, straight paths between the power supply, signal and amplification ensure your loudspeakers drive detailed and precise imaging.

High-Resolution Audio Dual DAC Differential Circuitry: The DRA-800H is equipped with two 32-bit/192kHz digital-to-analog converters (DACs) featuring high-resolution audio decoding with multiple lossless file types. This premium DAC delivers amazing stereo imaging and detail. By assigning two DACs per channel including, you'll hear increased dynamic range and improved signal-to-noise. Compatible high resolution music file types include ALAC, FLAC and WAV at up to 24-bit/196kHz. It's also compatible with 2.8/5.6-MHz DSD files (DSD is the audio coding format of SACD). Play them from memory devices via the front-panel USB or over network sources. The DRA-800H also supports low-res compressed music file types, such as MP3 and WMA. Thanks to its dual DAC differential circuit, the DR-A800H lets you enjoy superb audio fidelity from all your favorite audio tracks.

Listening Modes: In addition to stereo playback, the Denon DRA-800H offers two Direct Listening Modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance.

  • Stereo: Sound is output from the front left and right speakers, as well as the powered subwoofer, with digital signal processing and tone control.
  • Direct: Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch audio in its original form, without any digital signal processing or tone control.
  • Pure Direct: Pure Direct Mode goes a step further by turning off the receiver's DSP, tone control, display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noise being added to the audio signal.

Note: The DR-A800H is not compatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or other multichannel surround formats.

Compressed Audio Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.

Speaker Setup: The Denon DRA-800H provides a Test Tone to help you setup the output level of your connected loudspeakers. While listening to the Test Tone, you can adjust the output level (-12 to +12dB) of the left and right speakers. You can also adjust the receiver's subwoofer output level (-12 to + 12dB); as well as the the subwoofer output's Low Pass Filter (40, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 150, 200, or 250Hz). In addition, you can set the distance (0 to 60') between the speakers and subwoofer from your main listening position.

Note: This receiver does not offer auto speaker calibration and room correction.

Tone & Balance Control: The Denon DRA-800H offers Bass & Treble control, along with balance adjustment. You'll be able to adjust Bass & Treble from -6dB to +6DB, as well as adjust the balance in sound output between the connected left and right speakers.

Volume & Level Settings: The Denon DRA-800H stereo receiver offers the following volume & level settings.

  • Volume Settings: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB). You can also set a maximum volume level of 0 (80), -10 (70), or -20 (60) dB to limit the receiver's total volume output. In addition, you can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on; select "Mute", -79 to +18dB (1-98), or Last. Volume settings can be adjusted independently for the Main Zone and Zone 2.
  • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).
Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.

Analog & Digital Audio Inputs: The Denon DRA-800H is outfitted with both analog & digital audio inputs - including HDMI inputs, optical/coaxial digital inputs, as well as line-level and phono analog inputs.

  • HDMI Inputs: The five HDMI inputs only support 2ch PCM audio up to 24-bit/192kHz (not compatible with Dolby Digital or DTS).
  • Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The stereo receiver is equipped with two optical (toslink) digital inputs and one coaxial (RCA) digital input that support up to 24-bit/192khz 2ch PCM audio (not compatible with Dolby Digital or DTS).
  • Line-Level Inputs: There are two line-level analog inputs for connecting an external CD player or tape deck.
  • Phono Input: The Denon DRA-800H is outfitted with a Phono input (MM), so you can connect your turntable and listen to your vinyl records with high-quality sound.

Audio Outputs: The Denon DRA-800H stereo receiver features speaker A/B terminals, dual sub outputs, a HDMI ARC output, and front-panel headphone jack.

  • Speaker A/B Terminals: The receiver is equipped with speaker A/B terminals for connecting up to two pair of loudspeakers or bi-wiring a single pair of loudspeakers. These binding-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). When connecting one pair of loudspeakers to the Speaker A terminals, the receiver will accept impedances of 4 to 16-ohm. When connecting two pair of speakers to the Speaker A & B terminals or when bi-wiring a single pair of loudspeakers with the Speaker A & B terminals, the receiver will support impedances of 8 to 16-ohm. There is an impedance setting in the on-screen menu.
  • Dual Sub Outputs: For compatibility with dual subwoofer systems, the DRA-800H features two non-discrete subwoofer outputs. With dual subwoofers, which can be placed in different parts of the room, you'll benefit from response averaging, which helps provide smoother and more detailed deep bass, compared to a conventional single subwoofer speaker system. The same signal is output from each sub output.
  • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature of the DRA-800H's HDMI monitor output allows audio to be sent from your compatible TV to the receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your TV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television. Only the 2ch PCM setting can be used to play sound from a TV via the ARC function (the receiver does not support eARC).
  • Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.
Video Section

HDMI 2.0a: Featuring five HDMI inputs and one HDMI output, the DRA-800H incorporates an advanced video section that features the latest HDMI 2.0a specification, including support for 4K/60 Hz Ultra-HD video, BT.2020 Wide Color Gamut, High Dynamic Range (HDR), & 4:4:4 Pure Color sub-sampling, along with support for 3D content. The DRA-800H also features HDCP 2.3 compatibility, which is the latest 4K Ultra HD copyright protection standard.

  • 4K/60Hz + HDCP 2.3: The DRA-800H's HDMI inputs and monitor output support up to 4K (3840x2160 pixels) video @ 60 frames per second. All of the HDMI jacks support HDCP 2.3, which fully complies with the latest copyright protection standard for 4K video transmission. The receiver will also pass a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p video signals via HDMI.
  • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: The HDMI inputs and monitor output support RGB (up to 12-bit/30fps or 8-bit/60fps); YCbCr 4:4:4 (up to 12-bit/30fps or 8-bit/60fps), YCbCr 4:2:2 (up to 12-bit/60fps), and YCbCr 4:2:0 (up to 12-bit/60fps) color subsampling. The front-panel HDMI only supports 4K 60/50Hz using format YCbCr 4:2:0 only. With 4:4:4 color subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail.
  • Wide Color Gamut (BT.2020): The BT.2020 color standard delivers a much wider color gamut and represents about 75% of the total visual color spectrum, while the current Rec. 709 color standard selected as the color space for HDTVs and early generation 4K Ultra HDTVs covers only 35% of the total visual color spectrum.

Notes:

  • Use a premium high-speed 18Gbps HDMI cable for the best 4K/HDR performance.
  • Make sure the receiver's 4K Signal Format in the on-screen menu is set to "Enhanced" for playback of 4:4:4, 10-bit, and/or 12-bit 4K video.
  • This stereo receiver is not equipped with an analog video inputs or outputs.

HDR (High Dynamic Range): The Denon DRA-800H supports HDR (high dynamic range) Video - including HDR 10 and Hybrid Log-Gamma. HDR provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth.

  • HDR 10: HDR 10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
  • Hybrid-Log Gamma: HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.

Note: This stereo receiver does not support Dolby Vision.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When the stereo receiver is in "Standby" mode and the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled, both audio/video streams from the receivers HDMI input will be output to your television, via the stereo receiver's HDMI monitor output. Once the receiver is turned "On", only video will pass through the monitor output to your TV and the audio is directed to the receiver's speaker outputs.

  • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
  • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the stereo receiver to the "Standby" mode.
  • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

Other HDMI Features: The Denon DRA-800H stereo receiver's HDMI connectivity also offers ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), 3D video pass-through, and auto LipSync function.

  • ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode): The receiver will enter ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) when it detects a gaming signal from a compatible device (such as a Xbox One) and allows for a smooth, lag-free gaming experience. During ALLM, the receiver disables the Auto Lip Sync function.
  • 3D Ready: The DRA-800H stereo receiver supports 3D video pass-through (720p/1080p only) from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). Special eyewear will be required for viewing 3D content.
  • LipSync: This function adjusts the delay between audio and video output. You can do this manually or have the receiver set the LipSync function automatically. When connected to a TV via HDMI the receiver automatically adjusts audio output timing, if the TV supports an automatic LipSync function. You can also manually delay the sound output up to 500ms to synchronize it with the video image.

Video Select Function: This receiver can display HDMI video from a different source on your connected TV during audio playback from Tuner, CD (analog input only) HEOS, or Phono.

Built-in Bluetooth: The Denon DRA-800H is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 4.1) for wireless communication between Bluetooth-enabled audio source devices and headphones. The DRA-800H can act as a Bluetooth receiver in order to wirelessly stream music from an audio device, or a Bluetooth transmitter (available firmware update) in order to wirelessly stream music to a set of BT-enabled headphones. The receiver's Bluetooth wireless range is approximately 98.4'.

  • Bluetooth Receiver Mode: In BT Receiver mode, you'll be able to wirelessly stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content from your Bluetooth-enabled source device (such as your smartphone, tablet, computer, or laptop) to the Denon receiver. The receiver supports the Bluetooth SBC codec only. You will also be able to control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip) using the receiver's remote control. Advanced music operation will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth-enable device. There is no song/artist information display on the receiver or connected TV; continue to use your Bluetooth device's screen to view song/artist info. Up to eight Bluetooth source devices can be remembered by the DRA-800H, so family members as well as friends can enjoy their favorite tracks (only one device can be used at a time). The receiver can even be setup to automatically re-connect with previously paired devices, as well as turn on automatically when you start streaming audio from a Bluetooth source device.
  • Bluetooth Transmitter Mode (available firmware update): The Denon DRA-800H can also act as a Bluetooth transmitter and stream its non-Bluetooth audio sources (HDMI, Network, USB, Analog, Optical/Coax Digital, & AM/FM tuner) out to most any Bluetooth-enabled headphone set. You can even have the same source playing from the main speakers and a Bluetooth headphone simultaneously (with little noticeable delay). Volume control of your Bluetooth headphones will be controlled via the Bluetooth device and not the receiver. Up to eight headphones can be paired with the receiver, but only one set of headphones can be connected and used at a time.

Notes:

  • You cannot use the Bluetooth Transmitter and Receiver modes simultaneously. The Bluetooth Transmitter mode is not available when the receiver's current source input is set to Bluetooth and vice-versa; Bluetooth Receiver mode is not available when the Bluetooth setting "Transmitter" is set to ON.
  • Selecting a Bluetooth input source in any Zone will terminate the connection between the Denon receiver and Bluetooth headphones.
  • You cannot connect Bluetooth headphones when the Denon receiver is grouped within the HEOS app. Remove the receiver from the group to enable Bluetooth headphones connection.

Front-Panel USB Port: The Denon receiver is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy a variety of music files from a USB mass storage class memory device; such as a USB thumbdrive or portable HDD (a portable hard disk drive will require an external power supply). Compatible USB storage devices must be formatted in FAT32 or NTFS with no more than 500 music folders and 5000 music files. You can use the receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI) and remote control to navigate your stored music files on your connected USB memory device. Song/artist information will display on your HDMI-connected TV and the receivers front-panel display. USB devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the stereo receiver's USB port (5V/1A); even in standby mode.

Note: The receiver's USB port is not compatible with Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android OS devices, USB hubs, card-readers, and computers.

Multiroom Audio Playback

Zone 2 Pre-Outs: Zone 2 allows stereo playback of an audio source connected to the receiver in another room of your home via its RCA preamp outputs, an external amplifier, and pair of loudspeakers. When using the receiver's Zone 2 preamp outputs, you'll need an additional amplifier and pair of loudspeakers in the other room. The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the Denon receiver or from your external integrated amplifier.

  • Compatible Sources:
    • Analog Audio Inputs (including Phono)
    • AM/FM Tuner (cannot select different stations for each zone)
    • USB & Bluetooth Audio (cannot select USB & Bluetooth in separate zones)
    • HEOS Music Apps (including Pandora, Tidal, Amazon, and more); cannot select different HEOS music apps for each zone
    • Network Sources (including TuneIn Internet Radio, Spotify Connect, AirPlay, & DLNA); cannot select two different networks sources for Zone 1 and Zone 2
  • Incompatible Sources:
    • HDMI, Optical, & Coaxial inputs
    • DSD Audio Files
    • Unfortunately, you cannot select USB, Bluetooth and Network sources exclusively for each Zone. For example, if you select a network source for Zone 2 when a USB source is selected for the Main Zone, the input source in the Main Zone also switches to the same network source as Zone 2.

Note: The Denon receiver only supports a single HEOS music stream. If you desire a second HEOS music stream through the receiver's multizone output, you will need to connect the HEOS Link to one of the stereo receiver's analog inputs.

Zone 2 Source Function: The Zone 2 Source function allows you to enjoy the stereo receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone 2 simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types - analog, digital [including HDMI ARC], or wireless). You will have independent volume control in each zone. The Zone 2 Source function is useful when you want to enjoy the same music at the same time in multiple rooms during a get together or party.

Speaker B: The DRA-800H is equipped with Speaker A and B speaker terminals for connecting up to two pair of loudspeakers. Speaker A can be used for your main stereo loudspeakers, while Speaker B can be used for a pair of loudspeakers in another room. Speaker A and Speaker B can be active at the same time, or you can play only Speaker A or only Speaker B. When played together, Speaker A and Speaker B will output the same audio source at the same volume level (does not support independent sources or independent volume control). When connecting two pair of speakers to the receiver, you should use 8 to 16-ohm speakers (not compatible with 4-ohm).

HEOS Wireless Multiroom Audio: Built-in HEOS technology enables the DRA-800H to become part of the HEOS wireless multi-room audio eco-system, allowing you to stream and control all of your local and online music effortlessly from anywhere in your home with the HEOS App on your compatible Apple iOS or Android mobile device over a wireless WiFi network connection. The HEOS system is a true multi-room audio system that automatically synchronizes audio playback between multiple HEOS devices so that your music (up to 24-bit/192kHz Hi-Res audio) coming from different rooms is perfectly in sync and always sounds amazing. You can play the same audio source (other than your connected TV) in every room or any combination of rooms you choose, including a different song in every room.

  • Systems & Groups: The HEOS wireless multi-room sound system by Denon can support up to 32 HEOS speakers, receivers, amplifiers, and/or pre-amplifiers (all sold separately) on a single wireless network (IEEE 802.11 g/n; 2.4/5GHz). You can join or group up to eight individual Heos devices into a group that function as if they were a single source. The HEOS eco-system is flexible enough where you can create up to 16 Groups (2 Heos devices per Group). You can easily group 16 rooms together with Party Mode by simply using a "pinch" gesture.
  • Compatible Sources: The receiver's input sources, HEOS music apps, and local network content can be distributed through a HEOS multi-room audio system. However, you can not distribute an input source (analog, HDMI, optical/coax, USB, Bluetooth, tuner) that is different than the main zone of the stereo receiver (this is a change from previous HEOS-enabled receivers).
    • Receiver's analog inputs & AM/FM Tuner
    • HDMI (including ARC) and optical/coax digital inputs (2ch PCM only)
    • TuneIn Internet Radio & Spotify Connect
    • HEOS music apps (including Amazon, Pandora,Tidal, and more)
    • Windows PC & DLNA music servers
    • Bluetooth & USB audio
    • Music libraries stored on your Apple iOS or Android mobile device.
Note: HEOS wireless multiroom audio distribution does not support AirPlay/AirPlay 2.
Remote, App, & Voice Control

IR Remote: The Denon DRA-800H comes with an IR remote for wireless operation of the stereo receiver. It also supports HDMI-CEC and Smart TV Control.

  • HDMI CEC: HDMI CEC allows you to link operation of the receiver with other audio/video components (like your TV, Blu-ray player, or satellite/cable box) that are connected via HDMI. Linked functions include Power On/Off, which turns the receiver On or Off when you power on or off an HDMI CEC connected component; and Source Switching, which automatically switches the receiver to the input of the HDMI CEC component that has begun playback. The HDMI CEC and certain functions within HDMI CEC can be disabled, if you prefer. Not all HDMI CEC compatible devices will function in the same way.
  • Smart TV Control: You can even control the Denon DRA-800H with your Smart TV remote via an HDMI connection and the HDMI CEC functionality associated with your Smart TV. Simply set "HDMI Control" to ON in the receiver, then set "Smart Menu" to ON and begin controlling the DRA-800H with your TV's remote. Q
Can I add sound bar to this receiver?
dan  Sep 27, 2023
1 answer
A
Soundbars and receivers are not intended to be used simultaneously and generally will not work together nicely. If you're considering a simple 2-channel system for music and movie/TV, my personally recommendation would be to use the two speakers and perhaps an additional sub and forego the soundbar.

Q
Is this a good option to use with Polk ES60s? I will be using for a stereo home theater set up and also to listen to vinyl.
cody  Sep 27, 2023
4 answers
A
Personally, I wouldn't use this receiver for a home theater, as it does not have outputs for rear speakers. It has zone A and zone B (can use individual or paired) but it won't be a surround sound setup for movies and such. I use mine for purely music with two towers and a separate subwoofer. I have not had any issues with it, I have noticed it feels very hot to the touch when running high volumes so I have a receiver fan connected as well to keep it running cool. Overall it is an awesome receiver though!

I've had my Denon for a little over a year and I have no problem listening to vinyl, CD, DVD, Pandora, or Bluetooth
jacqueline  Oct 05, 2023
A
I don't see why not. It has 4 channels and plenty of power. Really the only thing i don't like about this is I have over 2,000 songs. It will group them in a queue of only 300 of them at a time. My car stereo does not even do that! Doesn't matter if i have it on a USB drive or playing off my blue tooth seems to group 300 and play those songs over and over. Everything else is great.
steven  Oct 04, 2023

It's a fantastic unit. You will completely enjoy it no matter what application you use it for.

Q
How is the phono pre-amp? Will it be better than the built-in one from my Audio Technica AT-LP120?
cody  Sep 27, 2023
1 answer
A
The Phono preamp built into the Denon DRA-800H is good, and so is the one built into the Audio Technica AT-LP120. If you are setting up a solid 2-channel system, the Denon provides great power at 100-watts per channel RMS. It is hard to say which would be better, but you could try using each one and select the one you feel sounds the best!

Q
I'm paying close attention to this receiver but I have a doubt can I connect rf-7111 8 ohms with jbl l100 classic 4 ohms and play all 4 speakers at the same time also 8 ohms sub woofer?
carlos  Aug 21, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Carlos, and thank you for your question. The Denon is 4 ohm stable, and think of the A and B outs as a parallel wiring. If both sets of speakers were running at the same time, both pairs would need to be 8 ohms to have that 4 ohm load. Your two pair would present a 2.7 ohm load, and the receiver would overheat then shut off. Subwoofers normally have their own built in amp. At that point their ohms dont matter. But short answer, you need all 4 main speakers to be 8 ohm.

Q
Will this amp provide simultaneous analog audio output (Pre/Line-Out) to zone 2 via the smart TV's HDMI connection while playing apps such as YouTube?
patrick  Aug 01, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Patrick, and thank you for your question. First you would be using your TV's HDMI ARC/eARC. Now if you are playing the same source material from your TV in both zone 1 and zone 2, HDMI ARC will go to both zones. Key, is HDMI ARC needs to go to zone 1 as well.

Q
Can I connect my iPod via a cable in order to play Lossless files through Apple Music?
charles lee  Mar 11, 2023
1 answer
A
You can Charlie, in a few ways. The Scosche HookUP cable in the link below is by far the easiest solution. This cable will allow you to play lossless files but it will play them at roughly CD quality. While this is a super easy way to connect, you can make some sound improvements from using a DAC that supports the lossless file quality. For best sound quality possible with a wired connection, I suggest the Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt in the second link below. The Audioquest DAC would be able to maximize the sound quality on the lossless files, but it does need some extra gear to connect to your Denon (the Apple USB to lightning adapter and the breakout cable in the third and fourth links below). These are both great ways to connect wired to your Denon! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_142HUPLIGH/Scosche-HookUp-Premium-Lightning-Audio-Adapter-Kit-Space-Gray.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_703DFLYCBL/AudioQuest-DragonFly-Cobalt.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_472LTUSBCM/Apple-Lightning-to-USB-Camera-Adapter.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_979CMR206/Hosa-Stereo-Mini-to-RCA-Adapter-Cable-6-foot.html

HIT WRONG BUTTON ON REMOTE. DENON AMP FAILED TO PLAY. I GET "NO NETWORK CONNECTED" MSG. HELP ?
mark  Dec 31, 2022

If your Denon DRA-800H was playing a source, try selecting the button on the remote corresponding to that source to see if playback resumes. If you are getting other error messages like your network connection failure, you may need to use the on-screen display via HDMI output to help troubleshoot further. I hope this helps!

I recommend a PRO-JECT DEBUT CARBON DC. I am extremely happy with this table. It comes with a pre-mounted ORTOFON 2M red cartridge.Based on reviews I have read, all products from this manufacturer are high-quality. Make sure you clean your records each time before you play them and clean the stylus every two albums or so. Gus

Looking for a 2 channel receiver for music only-- not for video/TV. I do use Pandora and want to be able to enjoy it along with FM radio. I also spin vinyl on a turntable and want to be able to use my CD changer/player. Any ideas if this would be an appropriate choice-- or not? Thank you.

A
This is a terrific receiver if you're looking for a 2.1 setup. I have found it to be perfect for any two-channel audio source -- it is also a great streaming receiver: I've found HEOS to be great for streaming audio (.flac files) from my NAS. Though I'm more of a wired guy, it support wireless options, including Airplay, WiFi and Bluetooth. I've owned mine for a little more than 6 months and can tell you it is a terrific stereo receiver, one that also allows you the flexibility to connect a TV/cable box and listen in stereo. Me? I'd buy it again and do recommend it to others who are looking to prioritize stereo audio and a really good two channel/subwoofer audio experience over multi-channel home theater features.
mark  Dec 13, 2020

It definitely would be a good choice. It is great for music. I mainly play cd's NS VINYL.
kenneth  Dec 13, 2020

This was an excellent choice for me. I did get a phono preamp because there isn't a phono jack on the unit I got. The sound is great and i stream Pandora, Sirius XM and directly from my iPhone. Hope this helps.
rob  Dec 13, 2020
A
Yes, I believe the DRA-800H would meet all of the requirements you've listed, and more. I also bought mine for music, and it sounds great with the KEF Q150 speakers I bought with it. I've also found that it handles video sources quite well too. A small TV or computer monitor makes setup quicker, but not needed otherwise.

I want to run four sets of speakers from this, do I need more equipment?
david james  Nov 20, 2020

The 800 has outputs for speakers A & speakers B. You can run those separately or together. I would suggest you talk to Crutchfield tech support for additional information. They are very helpful.
clair j.  Nov 22, 2020
A
Depends you have an A and B channel plus connections for 2 subs. So that technically is 6 speakers
kelly  Nov 21, 2020
A
For me it has enough power to run one pair of modest sized speakers. It has an A & B speaker output and settings so you could run 2 pair. In my opinion it does not have nearly enough power to run 4 pairs.
tim  Nov 20, 2020
A
No you do not need any more equipment to run the Denon - DRA-800H Very nice

Are the feature marketing stickers on the front of the receiver intended to be removed and if so how hard are they to peel off? They look like they are meant to stay on so I've been afraid to try to remove them.

I peeled the stickers off of mine without issue. They came right off. Rubbing alcohol will remove any sticky residue, was not needed for me though.
jacob  Nov 01, 2020

That appears to be up to you. Remove them if you do not care for them. Mine is about a year told, and the stickers are still there. They probably get more difficult to remove as time passes. You may find a solvent helps, such as nail polish remover (acetone) - try first on an inconspicuous area to make sure it doesn't damage the finish!

Q
Can I stream music from my phone via bluetooth while still getting picture to my TV?
colin e  Aug 13, 2020
3 answers
A
I can do this with my setup. I will warn you that I spent a lot of time trying to get the Receiver/TV HDMI interface properly configured. Also, when Ithe power goes down or sometimes when I change modes the TV interface re-configures itself and it's usually awkward to get it reconfigured to do what I want. This difficulty could be significantly influenced by my specific TV and HDMI configuration. I chose the 800H because I was more interested in a classic two channel Hi-Fi setup and not particularly interested in home theater. Since the 800H attempts to address both its operation becomes more complicated.
james  Aug 13, 2020

If you can I haven't figured it out yet. Usually when switching to bluetooth the TV will switch away from whatever you were watching.
stephen jordan  Aug 13, 2020

I never tried that but I don't think you can as you have to make different selections on the front of the unit to perform those functions. Can't select two at the same time.

My last Denon was a 5.1. It didn't last that long. Due to room configuration, I wasn't able to add all the speakers -- just L, R, and Center which meant missing a lot dialogue when it was hooked up to tv. If I go with this unit and my two speakers (excellent Denon speakers from a previous unit), can I be assured of catching all the sounds (no missing dialogue) when hooked up to my Samsung smart tv?

Q
Can the volume be controlled via a phone app using wifi and not bluetooth?
david  May 19, 2020
8 answers
A
Anyone who is logged into my wireless network should be able to see my Denon on the network. If the app they are using has audio out and their phone can connect, the Denon should be able to stream their audio. Having said that, I can only speak, from experience, about the Apple ecosystem. The Denon has Airplay 2 built in. Airplay 2 is Apple's playback system. It is very robust and was a requirement when I chose the Denon DRA-800H. We are in the the Apple ecosystem. (2 iPhones, 2 iPads, 1 MacBook Pro). I can stream audio from Music, Podcasts, NPR, IPR, Freegal Music, RadioApp and other apps from any of my devices. I can also watch a video on my device and listen to the audio through the Denon. I was looking to replace a dated stereo receiver. I am very happy with the DRA-800H.

I'm able to control volume over WiFi. Denon is connected to our office WiFi and music plays with volume control from the smartphone with the HEOS App to via Apple AirPlay

A
And my prior post should have specified that the remote iiOS apps connect via WiFi.
louis  May 19, 2020
A
Yes, there are two iOS apps available, the one specifically for controlling the Denon unit is called: " AVR Remote". My unit is buried within an A/V closet so the IR remote is useless; therefore I remotely access all of this unit's functions using this app on my iPads.
louis  May 19, 2020
A
Yes, I have my tuner in a cabinet and rarely open the cabinet or touch my physical remote for that matter. I do all of my control with a combination of the Denon AVR app and the HEOS app. No bluetooth involved. That includes basic features like tuner on/off, second zone on/off, volume control, streaming, etc. as well as advanced configuration. The only thing I've found so far that I can't do with those apps is put records on my turn table. :-) As a disclaimer, I'm not doing anything crazy with the tuner. Definitely been happy with smartphone control though. I keep bluetooth turned off.

Yes, over WiFi. Please note that at least for the iOS versions of both apps (AVR Remote and HEOS), this uses multicast, so you are not able to specify the IP address, and if your network has multiple VLANs, your phone must be on the same VLAN as the receiver (unless you set up an IGMP proxy).
daniel e  May 23, 2020
A
Yes. Power on/off, volume, bass, treble, balance, sound mode, and speaker selections can all be controlled from an iPhone or an iPad via Bluetooth, once the device has been paired with the receiver/amplifier through a simple pairing at the receiver/amplifier. Once paired, you just need to connect via Bluetooth on the phone each time and then launch the Denon app on the phone. Great for streaming music in my iTunes library on my phone or from Sirius XM. Amp is in my garage behind a closed door and I can control from the back porch.

I no longer own this receiver, but I think you may need to connect to an hdmi port labeled "arc" to get sound.
steve  May 16, 2020
A
Not sure why in your case but I have an older television with only one HDMI input so I run the HDMI from my Verizon DVR box to the TV. I use component cables to go between my DVD and receiver (red and white) for audio and the three wire component cables to the TV for video (red, blue and green I think). Also have red and white component cables going from the receiver to TV for just watching Regular TV through the stereo. I know it's a bit confusing but my tv and DVD player are older so I had to improvise. You should call crutchfeild tech assistance and I think they could steer you to a solution, they did with me for the issues I had with this receiver, and I had a bunch. It's not the most intuitive piece of equipment. Good luck

Would this be suitable for powering 4 Ohm speakers like the Buchardt s400? Seems like it can as long as I only connect two 4 Ohm speakers as I plan. I want to avoid an external amplifier (space/cost) and be able to use Spotify Connect and an Apple TV with the speakers. Speakers and receiver would be in small living room (seated ~8ft from speakers) and don't listen to anything very loud.

Hi Dave here, I've had my Denan 800 receiver for a little bit over a month now and I will tell you it puts out more power than you can believe! I am for Polk TSI 200 speakers in the four corners of my basement and this receiver blows them out! I want to turn up this receiver volume past 82 thinking it's going to go to a 100 because it's just too much power!
david  Jun 13, 2020
A
Yes. As long as you are only connecting one pair of speakers, the Denon is stable down to 4 ohms.
casey  Jun 01, 2020 (Staff)
A
Yes my unit is currently driven my a pair of Dynaudio towers which are 4ohm with no issues I also use Spotify app. With no issues
albert  May 29, 2020
A
Yes the receiver supports connecting 4 ohm speakers. You'll have to configure the outputs to 4 ohm when you set it up, instructions are in the manual. I'm using my DRA-800H to power two Klipsch AW-650 outdoor speakers in the backyard. Most of the time I use Spotify Connect and so far it's worked great! I use AirPlay when I want multi room playback, but Spotify doesn't yet have full AirPlay 2 support so there can be playback issues if your WiFi signal isn't great. Spotify connect playback is much more stable as the audio is streamed directly from the internet to the receiver and your phone simply acts as a playback controller. Overall I'm very happy with the receiver. I've been a Denon fan for years and have always had a good experience with their receivers.

mark  May 27, 2020
A
No, it does not support a center channel. This excellent Hi-Fi stereo has left, right & 2 sub outputs for speakers. It has 2 zones, for 2 sets of speakers, If you want a center channel you will need to look at a multi channel home theater system.
tim  May 27, 2020

This receiver is only a two channel receiver. You would need to get a dedicated multi-channel home theater receiver to connect a center channel speaker.
brian  May 27, 2020
A
If you mean a home theater center channel, the answer is No. No center or rear channel speakers out. This is an old style 'stereo' (Left and Right channels) receiver. It will push good sized 8 ohm speakers at 100W for good quality/volume sound. It does support a subwoofer out in addition to L & R.

I had the 800h but traded up to X3500h because 800h will not allow me to "assign" zone 2 for stereo listening and listen to tv through sound bar in main room without having to change HDMI settings to whichever one I wanted at the time--X3500h allows me to do both at the same time. To change HDMI to listen to TV: Settings/Video/HDMI Setup/HDMI Audio out/select between stereo and TV This may not be what you're asking but check that your HDMI Audio out is for TV

They look very similar. I just replaced an Onkyo TX series receiver because Onkyo no longer supported air play 2 and had no plans to update the firmware for the model RZ 610 that I owned. This made my decision to go with the Denon in the hope that they have better product support in the future. I also have found the Denon to be a little more intuitively easier to use than my Onlyo

It's pretty close. I have another Onkyo receiver and I was not completely enamored with the onkyo app for streaming music. I recently purchased the Denon DRA-800H. In general I am pretty happy with it. I don't know for sure but I seriously doubt the two receivers are the same. One feature the Denon has, that I think is exclusive to Denon, is HEOS compatibility. I'm still learning how to use HEOS but I expect it to be a powerful wireless interface. You can stream lossless FLAC music coded 24 bits at 96 kHz and you can wirelessly connect to HEOS amps or speakers in other rooms of your home and you can use your cell phone to control it all. Sounds wonderful, but, as always the devil is in the details. Hope this helps, Jim
james  Dec 11, 2019

Will this be able to connect to the Bose 901 speakers/pre-amp? Also, can this unit disable digital while using analog (turntable)?
bolting7  Dec 04, 2019

It does not have the necessary pre-out and main in you would need to connect it with the Bose 901 speakers/ pre-amp. Very few receivers we carry do. It does feature a Pure Direct Mode which maximizes fidelity by turning off the receiver's DSP, tone control, display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noise being added to the audio signal.
