About the JL Audio 10TW3-D4

John Pollard

JL Audio Built In USA Bass for challenging spaces

If you've got a pickup truck, sports car, or you just need to haul a lot of stuff, then you know that adding some bass can be a challenge. That's why JL Audio built the TW3 Series 10TW3-D4 shallow-mount subwoofer. This super-thin 10" sub puts out big bass, yet only requires minimum air space, so you can use a much smaller enclosure. Now, you can have your bass and your space too.

JL Audio 10TW3-D4

Don't let this sub's low profile fool you, it's made for big bass.

JL Audio's amazing engineering

JL Audio used all their tricks to build a sub this slender without giving up performance. Its tough polypropylene cone won't flex under high power, and the large, durable rubber surround helps the cone move large amounts of air. The heavy-duty cast-alloy frame only stands 3-1/4" tall, but provides a stable home for this high-performance bass driver. For best results, you'll want to send this sub up to 400 watts RMS, and the dual 4-ohm voice coils make it a perfect match for a mono amplifier.

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Thin-Line Design: JL Audio's patented thin-line woofer technology compresses the architecture of the 10TW3-D4 subwoofer and allows it to deliver great bass performance in tight space applications (less than 3¼" deep). Central to the technology is the Concentric Tube structure that supports the oversized voice coil and the suspension attachments. This permits placing the motor structure much further forward in the speaker than conventional designs, while maintaining excellent linear excursion capability.

Concentric Tube Suspension: JL Audio's patented Concentric Tube Suspension employs a molded structure which spans beyond the edge of the motor structure, supporting the spider on the outside of the motor's boundaries and the large diameter voice coil on the inside. The large voice coil permits the magnet to sit inside it, rather than surrounding the coil as is typical in most woofers. The concentric tube structure and the elimination of a conventional top-plate helps JL Audio place the motor higher up into the cone body's space to further compress depth, while still permitting excellent mechanical excursion.

Mica-Filled Polypropylene Woofer: The subwoofer features a mica-filled, injection-molded polypropylene (IMPP) cone with a rubber surround for added durability, woofer excursion and bass response.

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method of improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, the 10TW3-D4 motor remains linear over a long excursion range, and also maintains a stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: JL Audio recommends a 0.5 ft³ sealed enclosure. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 16" W x 13⅞" H x 6½" D, assuming ¾" thick material. (If you are using ⅝" thick materials, subtract ¼" from each dimension.)

Ported Box Volume: JL Audio recommends a ported box volume of 0.6 ft³. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a ported box with external dimensions of 30" W x 14⅜" H x 5⅛" D, assuming ¾" thick material. (If you are using ⅝" thick materials, subtract ¼" from each dimension.) A slot port is recommended with the following dimensions:

  • Width: 3.625"
  • Height: 2.125"
  • Length: 31.0625"

Shallow Mount Design: The JL Audio 10TW3-D4 requires a mounting depth of less than 3¼".

Q
Planning on installing 1 of these subs, what amp would work best?
jhankes  Nov 02, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Jackson. Thank you for your question. This sub is rated for 400 watts. JL Audio is pretty strict abould not over powering their subs under warranty. There are not many amps that would do 400 watts at 2 ohms. I can safely to go with a 300 watt Rockford Fosgate, or JL Audio as they will be putting out more than 300 watts, and they are clean power. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_575P300X1/Rockford-Fosgate-Punch-P300X1.html?tp=35834 https://www.crutchfield.com/p_13698601/JL-Audio-XD300-1v2.html?tp=35834

will this fit in the rear window factory sub enclosure of a 2017 XTS?
michael  Aug 27, 2023

This will fit into the factory subwoofer location in a 2017 Cadillac XTS. However, you may likely need to fabricate your own bracket/spacer as it is not a bolt-in replacement.

Q
What will be the sound difference between ported and sealed with the box specifications maybe one louder than another one o more boomy anyone that could have personal experience on that?
fernando  Aug 03, 2023
1 answer
A
This JL Audio 10TW3-D4 can be used in either a sealed or slot-ported box, Fernando. Overall bass output would be higher (boomier) with a ported box, with less accuracy. Sealed boxes provide less bass output, with a tighter more musical reproduction to the bass. Choose which one best fits your personal preferences, the good news is whichever box you choose the JL Audio 10TW3-D4 will sound great!

Q
Would a JL Audio jx1000/1d be enough to handle 3 of these? Currently have 2 tw3s but thinking of adding a 3rd since i have the space. But would i need a bigger amp. Or gotten the 8 ohm? TIA!
pablo  Mar 28, 2023
1 answer
A
Thank you for your question, Pablo! The JL Audo JD1000/1JD https://www.crutchfield.com/I-rET1c195/p_13698363/JL-Audio-JD1000-1.html series amp can handle 3 of your subwoofers, they would wire in series/parallel and would have a 2.7ohm impedance on that amp. If you'd like to set up an order for that amplifier, give one of our Advisors a call at 1.800.324.9695.

Q
Is there a suitable sub that can handle more power for this depth?
stephen m  Aug 23, 2022
1 answer
A
There is Stephen! We have two contenders here, first below is the Rockford Fosgate T1S1-10, this brings us up to 500 watts RMS. We also have the Kicker L7T in the second link also at 500 watts RMS. You'd have to make a box with square holes, but the depth is similar on both of these to the JL! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_575T1S101/Rockford-Fosgate-T1S1-10.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_20646LT102/Kicker-46L7T102.html

Q
i have a skar rp2000 watt amp do you think it'll over power this speaker ? or should i get another amp ?
tim  May 05, 2021
1 answer
A
The only way you can use that amp is if you wire the 2 woofers to 4ohms which you would wire them in series /parallel. Now if you wire these 2 woofers in parallel/parallel you would get 1ohm and that will fry those woofers. The overall answer yes you can but only at 4ohms. If you are on a budget just keep the amp if not I would get something more suitable that way you are not wasting the powerful amp.

Q
What is the MINIMUM required volume? I see .5 is recommended but JL does not list a range?
joseph  Feb 26, 2021

JL Audio recommends .5 cu ft , because it will perform optimal at that amount of air space with the correct amount of rms power. If you call JL Audio directly they have software that can help you design a specific box if you are tuning it to a certain frequency.

Should be good with power to spare the 4 ohm subs take more than the 8 ohm ones so if using a 600/1 you would need 8 ohm but Crutchfield doesn't sell those
shon  May 06, 2019
A
Easily. As long as they see 400w a piece you're good to go. That amp is regulated, so it's still pushing 1200w at 4 ohms, which is what the final impedance will be if wired correctly
joel  May 06, 2019
A
I went through the pdf manuals for both pieces of equipment that you intend to use, and this is what I found: If you connect a load higher than 4O nominal, power will drop by half with every doubling of impedance above 4O stereo. If you connect a load lower than 1.5O nominal, the amplifier protection circuitry activates a "safe" mode which reduces amplifier power to protect the circuitry from failure (the LED status indicator on the control panel will light up amber to indicate that this has happened). Meaning, the way tou be anle to wire the speakers, they are going to work at a lower load than the minimal on the amp. Your amp lower end is 1.5 ohms it will go to safe mode. The amp wont work. Sorry for the bad news...

I have this speaker in a small box designed to fit under the back seat of my 2005 F150. It sounds great. I run it in 2ohm of the 5 th channel of my Fosgate amp. It needs adequate power to drive it, but I love the sound and the feeling this sub puts out. You can feel the bass. JL makes a great sub in a compact size that does not sound compact. Makes sure you power it according to spec to get the most out of it. Do not underpower this sub.
alexander  Nov 15, 2018
A
The manufacturer recommends a box that isnt ported for cooling purposes. I made my own box with their recommended volume. I needed the low profile because removed the back seats in my super duty ford and built a bed. I'm happy with it but I will be adding another soon to give more bass when I'm in the mood. I'm running all JL component speakers and amp with an alpine head unit and it sounds incredible.

cody  Dec 21, 2017

As an add-on answer, better to over-powrt than under-power, generally speaking. The ratings err on the side of safety, etc. so a little "cushion" should be present. Follow the specs and, again, don't be afraid to supply a little extra power.
eric  Dec 21, 2017
A
For starters, it will always be enclosure-type dependent. Less power "needed" for ported and more power for sealed. I have two of these subs in a ported enclosure (Tundra CrewMax) with the JL HD 1200.1 powering them. They handle it like a champ!!

I have one mounted in a sealed enclosure in the rear hatch of my 350Z and it is wonderful. It's powered by a 300w JL Audio amp. I guess if you have a large enough box a ported setup will work fine for you. It sounds like you made it work for your requirements.
marshall s  Nov 15, 2017
A
To my knowledge a ported or sealed box is not free air. I believe free air would be just mounting them to a piece of plywood or what have you with no enclosure and turning them loose...

I have not personally ran that setup but it should be a great match. .88 cu in./side and the he's require .59 cu in. min so you should have .19cu in of extra air space which even for shallows are very much welcomed. I can tell you that these subs sound, hit, and reach deep bass notes just like a normal sub.

Is it possible to reverse mount these speakers? I am installing them in the bags of my Harley and want to know if there is anything I need to modify on the speaker or wiring to make it work.
james  Feb 10, 2016
1 answer
A
I dont think you can reverse mount this. Is the bag soft or hard. you will not get any decent sound from a soft compartment. The speaker needs some rigid space to build the Reflex off of. If its a hard bag it would be better but its likely fiberglass and it would vibrate pretty bad since the walls of the compartment are not rigid enough. TK

Q
Will these work well in a box with .8 cubic ft and 5.5" mounting depth?
benjamin t  Mar 19, 2015
4 answers
A
JL Audio recomends 0.5 ft^3 sealed enclosure but 0.8 ft^3 will work just fine. You could always add materal into your box to reduce the volme, if you choose. Having a larger sealed voume may change the tone of the sub slightly since it will change the tuning in the box, but I doubt it is an amount anyone could tell. I have the sub in a 0.66 ft^3 sealed box driven by the 350W sub/mono channel of an Alpine 5-channel amp. It is downfiring under the rear seat of my F150. No complaints. Since this is a top mount only sub and only requires 3.25" of mounting depth, you have more than enough at 5.5"
chip  Mar 20, 2015
A
The mounting depth is compatible as the sub only requires a minimum of 3.25 inches. The ideal cubic ft enclosure is .519 ft cubed, and as I understand you can go a little higher in volume without compromising a noticible about of change in perfomance, but you shouldn't go lower in volume because the subwoofer would have too much resistance on its motion and thus not perform well. With this understanding, the enclosure you are looking at would probably work. My advice is to build an enclosure to the correct specifications. If you're going to spend the money on a nice subwoofer, then you might as well have a matching quality box.

I always put a mesh grille on any sub and this protects it not only from the seat but also any passengers. Great sub by the way you will be happy. Just don't expect to win any SPL competitions.
jay  Mar 20, 2015
A
The literature with the sub states the one-way, linear excursion (Xmax) is 0.60 in. Also from the lterature: "Xmax specifications are derived via one-way voice coil overhang method with no correction factors applied."
chip  Mar 20, 2015
A
To my other answer .6 and half means inches
alexander  Mar 20, 2015
A
If by center cone you mean the aluminum plate with the logo on it then no. The baffle around the woofer will hit before the center plate. I have two of these facing down under the backseat of an f150. I think the baffle hits only on the very loudest lowest notes when I have the boost cranked up. The subwoofer is rated to move .6 (? Haven't looked it up in awhile) inwards and outwards so just give it about half and or more of clearance
alexander  Mar 20, 2015
A
On my installation I used the grill as protection against this. If you don't want to use the grill I would leave at least 1-1/4 inches between the top of the basket and the seat.
michael d  Mar 20, 2015
A
I installed this below the rear seat of an 02 Avalanche and haven't had any issues. I made a custom box for it and was also unsure if it would hit the seat. My best advise is to get the grill guard for the sub because it would make sure the cone didn't hit anything.

I am planning to run two of these subs in my 05 gmc crew cab. In a sealed enclosure, which has two separate compartments with .56 total volume air space in each (which according to specs sounds like a great match for these). However, I am having trouble finding an amp that will provide optimal power to these two subs, also considering the possibility of providing power to my front speakers ( kicker coaxial cheap upgrades) to improve their sound. What are the best amp options reasonably priced? Any input is much appreciated, this is my first system and I have a headache from researching for hours on end this evening. Thanks

I bought the Alpine PDX-V9 100W x 4 and 500W x 1 Car Amplifier - it provides MORE than enough power to run these. These subs POUND ... I put them under the second seat in my 4 door wrangler in a custom fiberglass enclosure. You probably do not need one this big, but I LOVE the 5 channel capabilities. It has a gain control that I really like as well. Just my two cents....

Q
Has anyone used this sub with the 2000-up Dodge Dakota Thunderform?

A
The TW3 has a unique mounting pattern that requires a large/flat mounting surface since the mounting holes are wider than a conventional 10" subwoofer- while also requiring less airspace than a conventional subwoofer. Looking at the picture of the unloaded MTX enclosure, it looks like the JL subwoofer's mounting points would hit the raised lip around the subwoofer opening on the enclosure- preventing the JL from fitting and sealing properly. Additionally, since the MTX enclosure is designed to work with a conventional subwoofer, the available airspace in the enclosure may be too large and beyond the recommended airspace for the JL subwoofer. I would not use the MTX unloaded enclosure with that particular JL sub.

Q
has anyone ever used this in a 2014 Mustang GT Convertible? Would be putting this in the trunk back passenger corner and was wondering if it still had a enough power to get through the back seat and convertible top area.

I installed one in the JL recommended size enclosure (see their website) behind the rear seat in my 2005 Dodge Magnum. It faces rearward and is powered by a 300W monoblock class D. It is plenty of bass for me. (Rock).

JL Audio recommends 0.50 cu.ft.

The sub recommends to have 0.5 cubic foot in the specs, but I'm using a box with 1 cubic foot and it sounds amazing, so I would recommend nothing bigger than a 1 cubic foot box but no smaller than 0.5 cubic foot.

JL recommends a sealed enclosure of 0.5 cubic feet net, meaning not including the 0.019 taken up by the driver. So total gross volume of 0.519 cubic feet. I tested slightly larger sealed enclosures in design software and there wasn't much benefit to going any larger, but if you're buying a premade box that is slightly larger (say 0.6), it will work just fine. JL does has no recommended ported designs for this subwoofer.

Joseph, I am not sure if you are asking about how much space is needed to mount the speaker or how much internal volume is needed for the sub to function properly. Both of these questions can be answered from the JL Audio website (see specifications). The necessary depth for the enclosure in order to mount the speaker needs to be at least 3.25" in depth (more would be best). The internal volume for the enclosure needs to be at least .5 Cubic feet (or half a cubic foot). Good Luck!..

Very little because it doesn't need it. I have a small sealed box with only about .6 cu/ft in my Toyota FJ Cruiser. I have a 500w Alpine amp feeding it and it absolutely pounds!! Super deep bass, accurate, and loud......what more could you ask? I would buy it again.
