Hybrid Digital Amplification: NAD has moved away from the old-fashioned power-hungry linear power supplies and Class AB output stages that waste nearly half of the energy consumed and produce heat rather than sound. Instead, NAD has developed even better performing circuits based on switch mode power supplies and Class D output stages. Once thought to be inferior to traditional topologies, this new Hybrid Digital Amplifier design is very linear over a wide bandwidth and provides consistent performance into all speaker loads, providing a dramatic advancement over previous Class AB and Class D amplifier designs.

    • Customized Hypex UcD Output Stage: The C 388 uses a customized version of the proven Hypex UcD output stage operating in a fully balanced bridge configuration. This allows for massive power with nearly un-measurable distortion and noise in the audible range. Every detail of this design has been carefully planned and perfectly executed to deliver every last drop of performance.
    • Sophisticated Power Supply: The C 388's power supply is capable of 400 watts continuously and over 1,000 watts instantaneously to allow for short-term musical transients. It can operate with any AC mains voltage from 100 to 240 volts and provides pure DC power to all the various stages of the C 388. This highly efficient supply also provides near perfect regulation of voltage across a wide range of conditions and provides a solid noise-free foundation for the amplifying stages.

Full Disclosure Power (FDP): NAD uses Full Disclosure Power (FDP), the most demanding criterion for performance measurement. FDP specifies distortion under the most extreme conditions of low impedance loads and frequency extremes, rather than the simple and easy 1kHz @ 8 ohms test quoted by many of other manufactures. NAD uses this stricter performance criterion because it more closely matches the demands of real music and real loudspeakers. Maintaining specified distortion at 4/8Ω and at 20-20kHz is a much more difficult achievement. The benefit of NAD's Full Disclosure Power is the total elimination of audible distortion at any listening level. This provides pinpoint imaging and realism with music and movies alike.

    • Continuous Power: 150 watts x 2-channel (@ 20-20kHz, into 4Ω or 8Ω, at 0.009% THD, with both channels driven)
    • IHF Dynamic Power: 400W into 2Ω / 350W into 4Ω / 250W into 8Ω

Binding Post Speaker Outputs: The amplifier features A & B speaker terminals to power two pair of loudspeakers. The speaker terminals consist of eight binding posts that will accept single banana plugs (single only), pin connectors, spade lugs, and bare wire (up to 10AWG). The amplifier supports 4Ω speakers when only one pair is connected, however, when two pair of speakers are connected a minimum impedance of 8Ω is recommended.

Discrete Headphone Amplifier: The NAD C 388 incorporates a discrete headphone amplifier with low output impedance and very high output voltage capability, enough to drive even high impedance studio monitor headphones. Connecting a set of headphone to unit's front-panel 1/4" jack will mute the speaker outputs. Volume, tone, and balance controls are all operable during headphone listening.

Line Outputs: The C 388 features a low impedance line-level stereo output that can connect to another other amplifier or powered subwoofer to extend the hybrid digital DAC amplifier's versatility.

Tone Control: The NAD C 388 hybrid digital DAC amplifier lets you adjust Bass (60Hz) & Treble (20kHz) from -7 to +7dB, as well as Balance between the left & right speakers (L10 to R10).

Filters: Filters provide easy bi-amplification or subwoofer integration by adding the required filters to redirect bass frequencies to the subwoofer. Select High Pass or Full Range. When High Pass is selected, low pass audio signals within the 40Hz to 200Hz are sent to the C 388's subwoofer preout and high pass audio signals are sent to the C 388's amplifier section and speaker outputs. Select Full-Range to deliver audio signals with the whole frequency spectrum to the C 388's amplifier section and speaker outputs.

    Variety of Sources

Bluetooth Music Streaming: You can wirelessly pair and connect instantly to the C 388 with Bluetooth (4.0), allowing you to stream stored music and music apps wirelessly from your Bluetooth-enabled source device; like your smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. The high performance Bluetooth aptX codec is fully supported for true CD-quality sound from aptX-compatible Bluetooth devices (like Android OS 4.0+ smartphones & tablets). There is no control or song/artist info display from the C 388.

Note: If the optional MDC BluOS module (sold separately) is installed, Bluetooth as Source will be defeated or not selectable. Use the Bluetooth option included in the MDC BluOS module.

Digital Inputs: The NAD C 388 is equipped with two optical (toslink) digital inputs and two coaxial (RCA) digital inputs. These digital inputs will support 2ch PCM audio up to 24-bit/192kHz (not compatible with Dolby Digital/DTS).

Analog Inputs: The NAD C 388's stereo RCA inputs (2 Line/1 Phono) can accommodate all kinds of analog source components by offering ideal input impedance characteristics with linear ultra-low-noise buffer amplifiers to prevent any sonic degradation caused by inappropriate loading of the source device.

MM Phono Stage w/ RIAA Equalization: The NAD C 388 hybrid digital DAC amplifier includes an MM Phono stage with precisely accurate RIAA equalization, high overload margins, extremely low noise, and an innovative circuit to suppress infrasonic noise that is present on all LPs - all without affecting bass response.

Modular Design Construction (MDC): Modular Design Construction (MDC), an exclusive feature of NAD, allows you to customize the NAD integrated amplifier with additional capabilities and features, now or in the future. The two available MDC slots can accommodate a variety of upgrade modules (all sold separately) including 4K video capable HDMI switching, additional Digital Inputs, and one of the most advanced Hi-Res Audio multi-room wireless systems available, the BluOS music management system developed by Bluesound.

    • BluOs Module: By simply adding the optional BluOS MDC Module (745MDBLUOS, sold separately), the C 388 becomes part of the BluOS wireless multiroom music ecosystem. The BluOS module connects to your network via a wireless (WiFi) or wired (Ethernet) connection, and is controlled via Apple iPod touch/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Windows PC, or Mac computer. BluOS supports streaming of internet radio, select online music services, and Hi-Res audio files. The BluOS module also includes dual USB (type-A) port for music file playback from USB mass storage class devices, like a thumbdrive or digital portable audio player. In addition the BluOS module offers built-in Bluetooth for wireless music streaming from a Bluetooth source device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer. *NAD components using the BluOS MDC are unable to share their inputs with other BluOS devices due to hardware limitations
    • 4K HDMI Module The MDC HDM-2 (745HDM2, sold separately) adds HDMI capability with three HDMI inputs and one HDMI output for video plass-through. Based on the latest 6GHz HDMI chip, the MDC HDM-2 includes full support for UHD (4K) video pass through to a video monitor, plus support for 24-bit/192kHz 2Ch PCM (not compatible with Dolby Digital/DTS).

Note: These MDC modules are all sold separately (not included with the C 388). You can add up to two MDC modules.

    Remote Control

NAD Remote App: Power, volume, source selection, and device settings are all controlled using the intuitive interface of the NAD Remote App (for Apple iOS 9.0+ and Android OS 5.0+) from your compatible Apple iOS or Android OS device.

IR Remote: The included IR remote control handles the key functions of the C 388. The IR remote can also be used to directly command other NAD products that respond to applicable common remote control codes. This includes other NAD Stereo Receiver, Integrated Amplifier, and Preamplifier models. It has additional controls to remotely operate NAD CD Players, AM/FM Tuners, and dedicated AM/FM/DB Tuners. Q
Will this have enough power to push 1-Pair of Thiel SCS4T,1 Pair of Thiel SCS4 and a Thiel Smart Subwoofer?and at 4 ohms how may watts per channel will it push 150 or 60
    jorge  Dec 05, 2022
    1 answer
    A
With 4-ohm speakers like your Thiel SCS4T you are limited to one pair only connected to the NAD C 388 Jorge. The NAD C 388 would be a really great choice for the bookshelf versions of yours, and pre-out for the subwoofer. Connecting an external amp to power your towers from this NAD is an option with RCA split from the pre out/sub RCA outputs. Consider using the NAD C298 in the link below to power your towers and the C 388 as pre-amp and to power your bookshelf Thiel pair. This of course would only be possible if you are using a subwoofer with an adjustable crossover and gain control built in. I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_745C298/NAD-C298.html

Home theater bypass feature for use with AVR. And streaming Spotify or Tidal wireless via Bluetooth?
    billy  May 28, 2022
    1 answer
    A
This unit does not have that feature sadly Billy, but you've got options if you want to add the NAD C388 to step up your 2 channel streaming AND use it with an existing AVR. Check out this Russound Speaker level/RCA converter I've linked below. You can connect this to your AVR's L and R main speaker outputs, and use one of the analog IN's on the NAD when you are wanting multichannel home theater. Simply power off the AVR and choose another input when you're ready to kick back into 2 channel listening mode! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_543ADP12/Russound-ADP-1-2-Speaker-level-to-Line-level-Adapter.html

I have a Droid phone and the Bluetooth works and sounds awesome with it I also have a very nice old pioneer phonograph player and it plays excellent I do have a computer laptop also plugged into it from music and it is hardwired in I'm not sure exactly what connection I have on the back I cannot remember at this point but it will go from the earphone jack into the stereo it plays excellent if that is what you are asking
    james.  May 03, 2022

Bluetooth works great and that would be the best option unless you have higher quality music. You can't hook up an iphone directly unless you get one of the optional modules that offers USB input, such as the BluOS module (MDC modules are listed on the NAD website). The BluOS module allows both a USB connection (you need an adapter for the iphone) and Airplay. But if you're paying this much for an amplifier, it makes more sense to have a higher quality music source than AAC, such as streaming lossless over Apple Music.

Can this be connected to a Home Theater AVR amp (through the AVR pre-outs)? So when listening to music (CD/Streaming/Phono), I will use the NAD, and when watching movies, I will use the AVR together with the NAD.

Yes. That is how I use it. There is a feature to do a Fixed Volume so that you don't have to adjust the volume on both the receiver. You can use AVR volume to control the complete audio experience.
    raman  Jun 03, 2021
    A
If I'm understanding what you're trying to do, you're going to need two separate sets of speakers. Connect your music sources (CD/phono) directly to the NAD, with its own speakers. Then connect your TV to the AVR with its own speakers. You're not going to be able to listen to surround sound if you include the NAD in your home theatre setup, making your AVR redundant. And there's no reason to include the AVR if you're only listening to music through the NAD. It's worth considering having the NAD (with speakers) in another room for dedicated listening and streaming music on the AVR system for more casual background music.

What is watts per channel output when using 2 pair of speakers? Speakers A + B in use
    todd  Apr 22, 2021
    1 answer
    A
This is a 2 channel amp that outputs 150 watts per channel at both 8 ohms and 4 ohms (the ohms each channel will see if you have 8 ohm speakers connected to both the A and B channels and they are both selected on to play). This means each of the 4 speakers will get 75 watts RMS.

Mmm....because it sounds amazing. Because you can try it and if unsatisfied you can return it. A couple things I dont lime about this amp...the dial for the volume requires multiple rounds to get max power. The controller vial in the left is useless. I have no idea why to include this dial in a minimalist design to only conyrol the setting (that off course it is noy an everything thing) . Othewise pretty satisfied withpowerand quality.
    sebastian  Jan 17, 2021

In my opinion, absolutely not. S/N numbers for any reputable amp is beyond the scope of any human ear detecting it, and "better" numbers are just for statistical bragging rights. This is a fine sounding integrated amp.

Yes, but only through the app, as near as I've been able to ascertain. Tone controls are in the app too. The app is a bit difficult to use and could be improved (the sliders for the controls tend to overshoot). Still happy with the amp though. It drives my floor-standing B&W speakers very well.

Yes, see page14 of on-line Owners Manual. I haven't used it and there was a learning curve for me to get the hang of using setttings and controls. I'm pretty happy with the unit. The sound quality for CD's and vinyl are much improved over my previous receiver/amp.

Sure! Use the Pre-Out / SubW RCA jack outputs to connect to your tape deck analog inputs. Make sure the Pre-Out / Subwoofer (LP FIlter) menu option is set to Pre Out and not Subwoofer. Best to use the mobile app to change settings, as navigating the front panel is awkward. Enjoy!

not sure.. I just use Bluetooth Pandora . I like the amp because it's clean sound and you can have it cranked up and it doesn't get hot... download the specs on that amp and it should answer your questions

To stream in high res, you need the BluOs module. You can stream from the Tidal app via Bluetooth, but it will not be high res.

I am thinking of upgrading my NAD amp & pre-amp (c160/c270) with a C388 amp. I am using a c546 bee player and one pair of psb 6t speakers. I am mostly playing cds and cdrs, but wouldn't mind expanding and connect to the music on my pc. Which c388 would you recommend?

Both are good options with a few different digital input options but the C 388 BluOS-2i is going to have far superior networking options. That gives you the flexibility to access your music library wirelessly as well as expand with other BluOS products. https://www.crutchfield.com/I-rET1c290/p_745C388B2I/NAD-C-388-BluOS-2i.html?tp=34948

how do I adjust the treble on this amp?

Using the up/down/left/center/enter control on the front panel. Starting from the power up state: Up once to highlight Source Setup menu, left once to highlight Settings menu, enter once to get to first setting, down twice to get to treble. Left to lower treble, right to increase treble. In summary, not intuitive or easy.

Tone controls are enabled by pressing a button on the remote. See pages 10 & 13 of user manual.

Have you downloaded the owner's manual? You could try the following, but check with NAD or the Crutchfield staff first. There are Pre-Out connectors on the back. You could insert an equalizer, using one of the line inputs as the Main-In. Good luck.

several steps: 1) look at the remote. 2) circular dial - use up arrow. 3) use the right arrow. 4) press the center button. 5) use the down arrow until you see "treble". 6) use the left or right arrow to raise or lower the db level (it goes to + or - 7). 7) once done, press the up arrow 3 times.

Can the NAD C388 integrate with a home theatre system?

The C388 puts out only stereo sound (i.e. two channels), so it will not deliver surround-sound encoded signals to a set of surround speakers. I'm not sure how you are envisioning it fit into your system. The quality of sound the C388 produces is stunning, and if coupled with a pair of higher end hi-fi speakers, it creates a much nicer audio experience than does surround, in my opinion. If what you are looking for is an amplifier that will provide you stereo sound as part of your home theater, then this is a very good buy. But remember you also need really good speakers to make the C388 shine as it deserves.

Note that this is a stereo amplifier, that is, 2 channels only. It has 2 optical inputs, 2 coax inputs and 2 RCA inputs. You should really check with the Crutchfield experts concerning the details of your intended application.

This is a wonderful Digital amplifier - it really Depends on what the definition of integrate is. Will the system accommodate the digital audio inputs of a home theater system yes - with the optics ins. There are not any hdmi inputs and not support for Dolby surround, so for home theater application I think it would be missing some needed features.

That depends on what you want to get out of it. If you're considering it for home theater with multi channel I would look at a receiver or pre/amp and amp combo. This will only play stereo, meaning two channels of audio information and can't decode todays Atmos, Dolby True HD or even Dolby Digital or DTS. This does have the ability to add HDMI switching with a separate module but again I believe it will only be in stereo. Hope that helps.

What is the highest quality method for streaming a digital signal from my computer to the internal DAC, using the digital RCA or optical inputs? My computer doesn't have toslink optical or digital RCA output. Can I convert from USB to digital RCA?
    m i  Aug 17, 2017

RCA inputs are analog, not digital. Only by using the digital inputs (optical, coax or USB) will you be using the higher quality DAC in the amplifier. If you use RCA input on the amp, your computer's DAC will be used. You may not be able to tell the difference, but part of the reason for buying an amp like this is to get the higher quality DAC. The amp is much better than my macbook pro's DAC as a comparison. There's an optional module for this amp that adds USB input (called an MDC module). You can also use bluetooth from your computer - it's hard to tell the difference honestly.

Hi MI, The best people to answer your question are the Crutchfield advisors. I had a similar question and they told me to try it with both methods separately and see which method gave me the best sound. A lot of it depends on your computer. As for converting from USB to RCA, I got my adapters on amazon.

Optical out from SACD player to optical in on C388. Will C388 decode and play both CD's and SACD's? Thanks
    gary  Jun 21, 2017

If you're playing SACD's, you should use the RCA inputs on the amp. Otherwise it will downgrade the signal to CD quality. This is part of the copy protection on SACD's where they don't want to allow you to be able to capture the music digitially and copy it. You may not care about the difference, but if you have an SACD player I'm assuming you would. You can connect the SACD player both ways -- optical and RCA -- and then use the input depending on what you're listening to, SACD or CD. That way you can still use the dac on the amp for CD's if you prefer it to your SACD player.
    william  May 02, 2022
    A
Yes, the optical signal coming from CD and SACD players are both digital, and the C388 will convert both of them to the analog signals sent to the speakers. The only difference between the optical signals coming from each is audio quality of the encoded signal.

I do not play SACDs so I do not know the answer. I do have a CD player and a blu-ray player connected to the C388. The sound is excellent from both players

Are my Bose 901 series VI speakers compatible with the NAD C388 Amp? My current power source is a Yamaha Receiver rated at 100 watts per channel and am looking for an amp with lots more beef. What would be the preferred method to hook up the 901's equalizer to the amp?

Sorry, no. The NAD C 388 does not offer the required "monitor loop" needed for connection of your Bose 901 EQs. The NAD C375BEE model offers robust power and the required monitor loop for your Bose 901: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_745C375BEE/item.html I hope that helps.
