Brit: Samsung's QLED TVs take the picture quality of their 4K Ultra HD models to new levels. Colors really pop, and maintain their realism no matter what brightness level you choose. 4K sources really shine, especially those encoded with HDR technology which shows enhanced detail in high-contrast scenes.
Steve: QLED stands for quantum dot light emitting diode, so what these are are LED-illuminated LCD TVs, but with quantum dots to enhance the illumination. What they do is improve on the color performance and the brightness performance. It provides full coverage of the DCI P3 color gamut. That's the color gamut used for digital cinema, and that's kind of the target for these new TVs that support 4k and HDR.
So there's about four different series in this year's QLED TVs. There's the Q7 flat, and then there's also a Q7 curved. Those TVs are basically the same feature-wise, except one has a flat screen one has a curved screen.
And then when you jump up to the Q8 series, that is a curved series as well. There's really not a lot of difference as far as the internal hardware, you know, as far as creating the picture. What it does have that is kind of different is if you flip the TV around to the back side, it has a this very sleek stainless steel back.
And then when you go up to the Q9F series, that is Samsung's flagship for this year. And that line does have some major differences. On all the lower models at Q7, Q8, the LEDs for the backlight are located in the bottom of the screen. And then when you go to the Q9, the lights are on the the size of the screen, and that makes it possible to have more dimming zones.
Having more dimming zones just gives you a more precise picture, and better overall contrast and shadow detail. The other advantage that you get when you go to the Q9 is a boost in peak brightness.
Another thing that Samsung has been doing on their TVs for the last few years is on their upper-end models, they've made it so that rather than having to connect all your gear directly to the TV, they provide a little connection hub.
They call it One Connect, and you connect all your components here, you know, like your cable box and your blu-ray player you connect those to this one connect hub and then there's just a single cable that goes from the hub to the TV. So particularly for wall mounting, that makes for a really clean installation.
Brit: We love Samsung's QLED TVs for their fantastic picture, beautiful design, and how easy they are to use. If you have any questions, just contact us at Crutchfield.
