American International TOYK994 Dash Kit
Crutchfield customer from Midlothian, VA on 1/13/2020
2008 Toyota RAV4
Fit was just OK out of the box. I had to do some trimming where the two side pieces clipped into the front piece before it would even fit together. Afterwards, I had to lightly sand a bit from the top edge (where it meets the factory vents) and also the bottom edge. This was just a bit of extra casting material, easy to rectify. Lastly, had to drill/enlarge new holes to get the screws to fit the deck properly. The finished result looks spectacular, and matches the factory textured plastic very nicely. The provided finishing trim ring is also excellent, looks really good once all together. A bit fiddly at first, but it works, so I can't complain.
Pros: Works. Looks great once all together.
Cons: Had to make it fit, but it wasn't difficult.

Good, not perfect
Crutchfield customer from Chevy Chase, MD on 11/12/2019
This is obviously a necessary item. The good news: Once I got it installed, it matched the existing dashboard plastic and is not apparent as an after-market device. The only issue is getting it to fit. It required some filing to get rid of stray plastic. You then fit the sides to the front piece. It is very floppy and keeps falling apart until you screw it to the radio which solidifies the whole structure. Moreover, they tell you to use the machine screws that come with the radio to mount the radio to the kit. Two of the four screws were too short. Fortunately, I had other metric screws that were the right diameter and a bit longer. The screws that come with the kit are sheet metal screws and obviously will damage the female sockets on the radio.
Pros: Matches the dashboard and makes a solid unit once you get it together.
Cons: Plastic molding is a bit sloppy

Had a lot of trouble assembling this kit as the pieces did not fit well together. Once together it supports the radio adequately but it made the job a lot harder than it needed to be.
Pros: Supports radio well once assembled
Cons: pieces did not fit well together or were they easily assembled. Original radio uses a metal cage to hold it in place but this plastic frame seemed flimsy and ill-fitting.

David from Fort Mill, SC on 3/4/2019

Worked well and fit perfectly in my 2010 Toyota Rav 4. Parts are almost all plastic so it felt a little cheap versus OEM which had some metal brackets but worked and fit fine. If you look closely the texture of the plastic is a little different from OEM but it is close enough that most would never notice. Double DIN installs require cutting/snapping off some parts. Instructions explain this adequately.
Pros: Very good fit. Looks fine.
Cons: All plastic parts. Universal kit so double DIN installs require cutting/snapping off some pieces.

I was very disappointed with this. It is made from plastic that is super easy to scratch. Mine in fact was scratched before I even opened the bag. If you have a double din unit to install, it requires you to cut some pieces and file them down. When I put the whole thing in place, it didn't fit perfectly.
Pros: Obvious one is that it makes your stereo feel like it is meant to be a part of your car.
Cons: Cheap plastic. You should not have to modify it by cutting pieces.

Cheaply made and not all screw holes line up
Michael from Lynnfield, MA on 12/18/2018
2008 Toyota RAV4
Got this with a double DIN JVC head unit for a 2008 RAV4 V6 Sport. As others have said, it is cheap plastic and all of the holes did not line up with the head unit. It took some modification to get the screws to line up. The side arms, that connect the kit to the inside of the dash also don't line up perfectly and seem like they could easily break off. The OEM head unit kit has two clips at the top and two at the bottom; however, this one only has two clips at the top. The bottom overhangs the console and partially covers the 'Hours' button for the clock. It would be nice if there was another alternative (preferably one with metal parts) for the dash kit.
Pros:
Cons: Not all of the screw holes line up cheap plastic does not line up that well partially covers some buttons

Ron from Kennard, TX on 11/19/2018
2007 Toyota RAV4
Ordered this Kit with an Alpine iLX-207 for my 2007 Toyota RAV4 Limited. Overall feel was cheap plastic, and not pleased with having to cut parts out to fit my Alpine. Fit in RAV not precise either as some gaps even with refitting several times. Clips for top of bezel would not stay in place and kept moving, making removal very difficult with prying off. This is an OK unit but does not match the quality of the unit going in or the other dash components.
Pros: Style fits with RAV and Alpine iLX0207
Cons: Poor quality, some modification required and fit is not that great.

Easy install and a good match with plenty
Mac from Middleville, MI on 10/7/2018
2008 Toyota RAV4
I really liked this kit. Reading through the instructions first made it easy to install. There are 3 basic configuration single DIN, double DIN, and ISO mount. I used the trim plate that came with my radio as it was already mount in a DIN sleeve which looked good. The ISO mount did come with some matching trim for the radio similar to the lower DIN bin. At first I was hesitant due to a darker tone of the kit. When installed it matches well with the rest of the trim as pictured. Total install of the radio in the kit and mounting in the dash was about 1/2 hour. I also was able to route my usb cable in dash coming through the lower DIN sleeve which allows me to store the extra cable behind the dash. Great kit overall and recommend for all RAV4 owners.
Pros: Plenty of install options. Nice features. Good match with the dash.
Cons: Need to read through the instructions to understand which instructions apply to your install.

Even for free, this trim kit fits well and looks good
Jack from Houston, TX on 12/25/2017
2006 Toyota RAV4
This trim kit came with a JVC head unit that was a Christmas present for my daughter. The kit fits well and looks pretty good. Installation was simple. Once all the pieces were fit together, the assembly is pretty rigid. The JVC head unit came with a Bluetooth microphone, so we drilled a hole in the trim kit and glued the mic in, no exposed wires. Note that in my daughter's '06 Toyota RAV-4 we installed a single-DIN head unit and used the ISO brackets, not the DIN sleeve. Because of that, we were able to adjust the head unit forward/back precisely to make the trim piece look right, and since the head unit is held into the bracket by four screws, it was easy to get everything partially assembled and adjusted before it was time to snap it into the dash.
Pros: Fits well, looks good Makes installation pretty simple

Gets the job done, but the kit is cheaply built and feels very flimsy. Putting it together I was worried that too much pressure would snap the plastic off. As the other reviews have mentioned, used the original metal brackets on your OE radio and use some washer to get the depth you want. Much more sturdy than the plastic included.
Pros: Does what it needs to
Cons: Cheaply built, feels flimsy.

I used this kit to install a Sony double din receiver into a 2006 Toyota Rav4. It fit perfectly into the SUV and receiver. It looks great, just like the factory one. It fits great, no gaps. It comes with everything you might need for a single or double din receiver. The only drawback is that the sides use tabs to connect to the front. Not very secure.
Pros: All the parts you might need are included, looks as good as the original one from the factory in fit and finish.
Cons: The sides just use tabs to fit into the front, not very secure

It's free and performs as such.
Aaron from Denton, TX on 7/9/2017
2009 Toyota RAV4
It was free so I hate to talk smack but just so you know, here are some things: you have to cut pieces out yourself, which is a terrible idea; the pieces are held by gravity and your hands until the unit is installed which can makes for frustrating times cramped up in your car with parts and tools scattered everywhere. The major thing is the mount doesn't line up closely enough - one of my clock buttons underneath it is covered and there's a gap at the top. I couldn't adjust it so it looks pretty crappy.
Pros: Free, looks almost correct
Cons: Doesn't line up well, hard to assemble and install

Some advice on installation using this kit
David from Duluth, MN on 2/5/2017
I know that this came "free" with my Pioneer receiver, but I really would have preferred to pay something to get a better constructed product. Cheap, thin, brittle plastic. The biggest frustration is that the side mounting brackets are supposed the snap into the front piece before you attach them. It was possible to do this with one of the mounting brackets, the other one was miss-molded and would not go without modification. Other people facing this problem posted that they used the sturdy metal brackets that secured the factory radio. Do this! They pop off the factory receiver with a few bolts, the brackets are MUCH stronger, and the faceplate will still snap into place. You get what you (don't) pay for!
Pros: Kind of mostly matched the color and texture of the rest of the interior.
Cons: Flimsy, poorly designed and manufactured.

Very confusing instructions(I did eventually figure it out after just fiddling with the pieces) plastic is cheap and you have to break off and file down part of it for a double din install. Leaves a decently large sized gap after install ontop if the unit right below air vents. Overall not happy with this dash kit.
Pros: Cheap
Cons: Cheap Poor fit Hard to install Bad instructions

This mounting hardware came free with my purchase of a Pioneer double Din receiver for my 2008 Toyota Rav 4.
Pros: It was free and overall completed the job.
Cons: This mounting hardware is beyond cheap. There are many big gaps around the edges with the rest of the trim, so it looks tacky. This also took some big time modifications to make it work in my car and sit fairly flush with the rest of the plastic around it and also so it wouldn't vibrate whenever I am accelerating.

TOYK994 Dash Kit for RAV4
John L from Batesville, VA on 8/5/2016

I almost didn't use this kit after reading the mixed, and widely disparate, reviews. I installed a Kenwood double din receiver that was recommended by the Crutchfield team (DPX502BT). This dash kit was also the Crutchfield recommendation. The kit is in my car and the fit is tight and a perfect match. It looks like it was factory installed and customized for my Base 2010 RAV4. All of the issues I fretted about after reading the reviews were resolved...perhaps in response to customer (and Crutchfield) feedback. The instructions now tell you clearly to cut off the bar across the face if mounting a double din receiver...as well as to cut off the back of the brackets. The whole thing snapped into place in short order. The color and fit are PERFECT...no gaps anywhere. The only strong suggestion (a big thanks to an earlier reviewer) is to place 4 small washers over the 4 mounting bolts so that the washer sits over and protects the plastic mounting brackets. This is a must for a strong and secure mount. It keeps the plastic mounting pieces from separating or breaking. I am thrilled with the result and highly recommend this dash kit. Thank you Crutchfield reps!
Pros: great fit; perfect color match; easy install
Cons: instructions should tell you to add a small washer to each mounting bolt

Product is cheaply made. The instructions terrible also. There are plastic parts you have to cut off and sand areas flat where they were attached. Horrible! There are gaps around the radio. I would have taken it out and tried to do more adjusting but I was afraid the cheap plastic and clips would break. Will probably order another dash kit from some other vender. Not even worth the price of free!

Jim from Aberdeen, SD on 6/26/2016
2008 Toyota RAV4
The end result was really good. Once installed, everything looks like it was meant to be in the dash of my RAV4. My only beef was the assembly instructions for the kit are horribly written. The diagrams are unclear and all the parts have the same number on them (so referencing part #F-94 in the instructions is pointless). Also the spacers did not work with my receiver without some improvising. There are only 10 pieces to fit together, so perhaps I'm making a bigger deal out this (it is definitely not rocket science after all), but I am not exaggerating when I say it took me longer to put the dash kit together than it took me to install the finished product in my vehicle.
Pros: Worked well and looks good in the dash.
Cons: The assembly instructions.

The product does not fit well. Once it's installed, you notice that there are gaps between the TOYK994 and the other components. Also, it sits a bit lower than it should and that gets in the way when you want to set the car clock. The instructions are awful. Unfortunately there is no other (product) choice.

The dash kit fits my car and was recommended by the Crutchfield CS. It is ugly. The finish of the kit does not match the rest of the car. Rubber black is not the same as gloss black. I wish I could return it. I end up buying another dash kit from a local stereo installer.

Careful with the sleeve
TheTravelor from Maine on 1/18/2016
2007 Toyota RAV4
This - like all Crutchfield's trim kits - is a great match - BUT - you do not need to use the sleeve on your aftermarket radio when you install it. This is not stated anywhere in the instructions, and in fact shows images of using the sleeve. Bent the sleeve and cracked the corner of the trim kit before we called Crutchfield and they said "Oh yeah - you don't use the sleeve..."
Pros: Nice trim - matches Toyota RAV4 nicely
Cons: Instructions are lacking.

Works well
Ben from Colorado on 10/16/2015
2006 Toyota RAV4
This kit works well in my 2006 RAV4. No complaints with gaps. It doesn't quite match the factory trim in terms of texture, but it's close enough.
Pros: Fits. secures my head unit.
Cons: Where my original trim had pressure tabs that snap into place, securing the trim to the car. This kit has metal pressure tabs. These metal pressure tabs don't hold as well and are pretty flimsy - mine broke after taking the kit out a couple of times, so it's slightly less secured than it should be.

I love direct fit.
John K from Pennsauken, NJ on 10/5/2015
I used this in conjunction with Kenwood Excelon DNX692, and the Kenwood KAC-M1804 4 channel amp. The wiring was a bit different because of my own modification and works well. This harness is designed to plug the head unit directly to the cars wiring and it did just that. My issue was that I added the 4 channel amp as well. I did this by using the high pass RCA outputs to the amp and then wired the amp output wires to the harness. It took Al but 15 minutes to solder all the connections and shrink wrap them. I reckoned doing this instead of crimps for best connection. Amplified power needs solid connections so those who may complain are most likely not soldering their connections.
Pros: Plugs right in to the cars wiring and the head unit eliminating the need to cut the cars wires. You can modify to suite your needs as I did with the wiring color codes on the packaging.
Cons: none

Functional, but only barely so
ArtoriusRex from Oregon on 10/4/2015
2012 Toyota RAV4
I purchased this with a Kenwood DDX492 to mount in a 2012 Rav4. The instructions are lacking, but with some diligence they're not impossible to figure out. My big problem with this kit is that the side panels that connect the surround to the sides of the stereo are made of such brittle plastic that the tabs that lock the three pieces (left & right sides and face surround) together just break if any pressure is put on them. I think I lost 2 out of three on each side, leaving just the center ones in place by the time I got the stereo mounted into the frame. There also wasn't enough room to have the DIN chassis around the stereo and have it fit properly. Good thing the screws provided with the kit let the stereo mount solidly to the left & right sides. Yeah, it's not removable now, but that's not a problem.
Pros: Looks nice and replicates the OEM mounting chassis fairly well. Inexpensive, but at a cost.
Cons: Cheap, brittle plastic. Poor instructions that are written better for the single DIN mount than the double DIN mount. It sucks that there aren't many alternatives out there. Crutchfield should supply the best options in the market if they want to remain a per-eminent source of car stereo gear.

Good result for mounting my Kenwood nav unit in my 2011 RAV4. The fit was ok to my dash, but there is a bit of lip at top of plate... Maybe 1/16 of an inch. The directions on trying to decide how to configure the frame to a double deck (required cutting) were a bit confusing, but I figured it out. I am satisfied with the result.
Pros: Installation was acceptable
Cons: Slight gap at the top of the radio. Instructions were not clear.

Cheap, weak mount, had to replace
EricG from Florida on 4/15/2015
2010 Toyota RAV4
This mount kit for my Rav4 matched the vehicle very well with a snug fit against the rest of the dash, however the cheap plastic construction and poorly aligned screw holes made this mount pretty much useless holding the double-DIN unit I installed. The Kenwood unit I was installing did not align with the face opening and left a gap at the bottom and was pushing against the top. The screw slots on the side brackets didn't line up the head unit very well. Also, the entire mount "sagged" in the dash after a couple days. I removed the mount kit only to find out the plastic brackets that were holding to the dash were bending at the screws. They are not holes, but just slots and were very weak. I ended up ripping out the kit and replacing it with a Scosche kit I found on another site. Disappointing, because the kits I have received in the past from Crutchfield have worked well.
Pros: Matched color and fit of vehicle nicely
Cons: Cheap made, didn't hold head unit well, weak mount.

GOOD PRODUCT, TERRIBLE INSTRUCTIONS
Crownleaf from Prairie Village, KS on 2/8/2015
2008 Toyota RAV4
I bought this to use with the Clarion CZ702. Fortunately. I am blessed to be able to "visualize" how things go together and this came in handy as the instructions were poor. Many unidentified parts supplied. Written instructions were cryptic at best. After numerous tries with the parts in different combinations I finally figured out how to make it work for my car, Once this was determined fit was good, as well as, looks. Matches 2008 RAV4 dashboard very nicely.
Pros: Looks and fit.
Cons: Instructions Poor. Mounting tabs on sides are plastic (factory radio had metal tabs). Screw heads "spread" tabs apart and did not allow for snug fit. Had to add washers under the screw heads to distribute the pressure evenly against plastic tabs so as to prevent them from distorting when tightened.

Not great AT ALL
jason-cville from Charlottesville, VA on 10/20/2014
I installed this today and am disappointed by the quality. The pieces and parts snap together in a manner that doesn't seem secure and the fit is pretty bad. I used it to install an Alpine INA-W900, a double DIN headunit, and the dash kit doesn't seem to be robust enough to support the weight. After tightening every screw, nut, etc and double checking everything, the kit "hangs" down about 1/16". This left a unsightly gap between the top of the dash kit and the AC vents. So, in summary, I'm not satisfied with the kit. I have plenty of installation experience, so I'm pretty sure it's not me! Anyway, when I have more time tomorrow I am going to pull it out and try to reinstall, but I'm not expecting much of an improvement.
Pros: Decent color/texture match, Cheap
Cons: Flimsy, CHEAP

Toyota RAV4 In-dash Receiver Kit
bjbaer from Burlington, VT on 5/20/2014
2011 Toyota RAV4
You have to assemble it and hold it together while you slide the radio into it and screw it to the radio. One of the sides didn't fit well into the face plate. I ended up breaking off one of the tabs to make it fit. Also the screws are sheet metal screws. My Kenwood radio uses 10-32 screws. That means a trip to the hardware store. Also the install instructions that Crutchfield supplied to install the radio were quite lacking as well. They were for a single-DIN style. My radio was a double-Din DVD. No instructions on connecting the Parking brake or reverse wires!!
Pros: Black in color. Looks OK when installed.
Cons: A bit complicated to assemble.

Absolute piece of junk. Did not work at all with a double-DIN radio I attempted to install in my 2012 RAV4. Does not fit well and can obviously see edges of radio. Radio is all hooked up and ready to go, but now I have to locate a mount locally for the radio. Please do not provide something for free if it's not going to work. Pain to install, but great color match and mounts solidly
AMP from San Diego, CA on 5/13/2013
2006 Toyota RAV4
As another reviewer mentioned, the kit seems extremely flimsy when you start assembling, but provides a good solid mount once everything is bolted in. I would not trust this kit to stay together through multiple removals though; if you plan to access your wiring more than once or twice down the road, steer clear. Assembling the kit is like a jigsaw puzzle, and takes a good amount of custom fitting for double-DIN, to include cutting the center rail out, clipping off back supports, and filing down surfaces that will be visible once installed. Great color match to the dash in my wife's 2006 base RAV4 though, fitted flush, and got the job done. For the price, I'd buy it again.
Pros: Adjustable to make a flush installation, great color match, cheap.
Cons: Complicated assembly, detailed finish work required, will probably not survive removal and reinstallation more than once or twice.

John L from Alexandria, VA on 1/19/2013
2008 Toyota RAV4
When I first looked at it, I thought they sent the wrong one as it looked to be for the single din. Once I read the instructions I found out I had to cut peices of the plastic of the front to make it a double din. I was missing one of the plastic parts for the clips. The spacers have two little protrusions on them to hold them in place with the sides but one of the side only had one hole so only one spacer got used. I had to break the back off of the sides to get my stereo (Pioneer AVH-P2400BT) to fit.
Pros: Free
Cons: Missing parts, parts not fitting together properly, and over all just felt flimsy.

Installation mount
Crutchfield customer from New Jersey on 1/13/2013
I am not impressed at all with the standard mount they provided. It is flimsy in design and the parts kept separating after putting them together. I had to try four different times until it took. I also don't like the fact that this mount, which was sent specifically for my car/radio combination, does not use the same amount of mounting hardware and I had to cut part of the back out to make the head unit fit. Not at all the quality I'd expect from Crutchfield.

I think the only thing I like about this dash kit is the color quite close to the OEM dash. But I couldn't help to think how cheap the quality it is. Furthermore the instruction for installation was terrible, it's doesn't help to do anything with the installation. All the part doesn't seem included either, in the instruction tell me to put the metal clip on but they didn't include any thing like that.

Not a big fan of the AI kit
Krlang from Danvers, MA on 6/26/2012
2010 Toyota RAV4
I opened the kit and looked at it, but wasnt all that fond of it. I had already bought hte Scosche kit, not planning on buying the radio from Crutchfield. When the radio arrived, I looked over both kits and modified the installation of the Scosche kit. The Toyota mount brackets fit the Kenwood DNX6990HD, and I used them, along with a couple of washers instead of the plastic kit parts. I felt it was more secure that way. Neither kit matched in color. The AI kit was darker, the Scosche kit was lighter. I also like the way the faceplate on the Scosche lit used the original mounts with new clips to secure it into the opening. The AI kit did not.

The build quality is alright but leaves room for improvement. The directions fail to mention that if you're installing a double din unit that you will need to snap off the clips in the rear that would normally support the bottom tray which is no longer needed. Other all the piece works but doesn't appear to be very sturdy.
Pros: Looks close to OEM.
Cons: Build quality, instructions.

Just OK
Ben from Vermont on 2/1/2012
2010 Toyota RAV4
This is free, so I wasn't expecting much. When I opened the kit, my first impression was that it was a flimsy piece of junk and the color/texture wasn't going to be a good match. However, I started to put the pieces together and it felt more and more solid. When I put it in the RAV4, I was actually surprised that the color and texture are OK. I notice that it's not a perfect match, but most people wouldn't. It could certainly be a better match, but it's good enough for a free item. The fit is also just OK. It doesn't sit quite flush at the top, but again, only I would notice. Overall, this kit fits solidly in the RAV and looks OK. I'll stick with it for now, but may try an alternative in the future.
Pros: Free, solid enough
Cons: Color just OK, texture just OK, fit just OK.

I agree with most of what the other reviews have said about this product. I had a manufacturer's defect on the top of the unit and also wish they had mentioned to cut/break the back brackets for the storage bin off if doing a double-din installation. I felt that the plastic material was sturdy enough to hold the unit, but it was hard to know how much to tighten the bolts to the car frame without spreading out the support feet. This was my first major do it yourself auto installation and it went pretty well.

Very good - some issues with double-DIN
Chris from Lacey, WA on 2/14/2009
2007 Toyota RAV4
This kit is exactly what you need to replace your Toyota factory stereo. I used it on my 2007 RAV4. It works fine, with a couple of caveats. First, I installed a double-DIN sized radio. The kit had instructions for installing double-DIN, but they were incomplete. If you use double-DIN, it does tell you to cut off the plastic piece going across the front which separates it into two single-DIN sized slots. However, it does not tell you that you also have to cut off the supports behind the bracket that are normally used for the included storage pocket. The supports work fine with the pocket, but with a double-DIN sized radio, you don't use the pocket (it takes up both slots), and because the radio is longer than the space allowed for the pocket, the supports for the pocket also had to be cut off. In addition, the plastic side supports were supposed to snap into place, but they kept falling off as I was installing. A liberal application of CA ("Super Glue" to the uninitiated) on these plastic parts solved the problem. In all, it worked great and I was able to replace my stock Toyota stereo, and the new aftermarket JVC looks perfect in the slot -- it just takes a little more work and ingenuity than is indicated in the instruction sheet. FYI, the instruction sheet is supplied by the manufacturer (American International), so it is not as complete and illustrative as we are used to with the always excellent Crutchfield documentation.

Looks good, but Cheap in structure
Clay from San Diego, CA on 10/16/2008
2008 Toyota RAV4
Cosmetically this unit looks just right, only a 1mm gap around the stereo was easy to adjust using the OEM brackets from Toyota. I did not use the plastic support brackets. THey were essentially not of the quality I would trust a $600 Double Din radio to hang on in a SUV. The need for a rear support (hanger bracket per the intructions was not very reassuring to the impression). Fatory radio brackets fit fine to my Kenwood DDX512 and are strong enough to trust. Thank goodness they matched the stereo holes or I would have been searching for a new kit.

Looks fine, but the dashboard fit could be better
Mister Articulate from Waukesha, WI on 2/6/2007
2007 Toyota RAV4
This kit has a good color that blends pretty well with the interior of my 2007 RAV4. All around, it works pretty well, and the Alpine DIN head unit I put into it fits fine. The only compaint I have is that it sticks out a little too much at the top of the dashboard, where it meets the heater vents. It protrudes about 3 mm out in the middle, leaving a bit of a "shelf", which isn't visible when looked at from the front, but is certainly noticeable viewed from the top (which hardly ever happens, really). It doesn't bother me enough to return it, though. Excellent Mastersheet instructions, that are extremely helpful, as usual.
