Power ratings and amp efficiency

Most amplifiers come in two distinct "Classes" of technology with different efficiencies and power wire size requirements. Class AB amps typically feature 50% to 60% efficiency, while Class D amps are usually 75% to 80% efficient. This Crutchfield wiring kit was designed to accommodate the energy demands of a Class AB amplifier with a total output of up to about 140 watts RMS, or a Class D amp with up to 220 watts RMS output.

CTA-2015 Compliant

Crutchfield wire

Crutchfield wire is made of oxygen-free copper, with no impurities that could raise its resistance to a signal's flow or add interference. Crutchfield wire meets all Consumer Technology Association (CTA-2015) standards for size, resistance, and insulation quality.

Customer Q&A

Q
How do I connect the wires to a new head unit and the wiring harnesses?
planelover  Mar 04, 2023
1 answer
A
When connecting a headunit to your vehicle using an amp wiring kit, the power wire (red) ran from your battery would typically connect to the constant 12V power wire (usually yellow) on the head unit. The ground wire (black) would typically connect to the ground wire (also black) on the back of your head unit as well as to the chassis of the vehicle. Q
can this power a 300 watt dual amp built into 10 subwoofer?

A
Yes this is a big enough gage wire for this application. Just make sure your connections are tight and that the inline fuse is not bigger than the one(s) on the amp

I was running a Rockford Fosgate 300.1 into a p2 sub with this wire but ended going with next size up due to the fact that my amp was getting really hot. -Not getting enough juice with that gauge wire. Hope this helps..

Q
How do i determine what raring fuse to install in the line?
lionel  Apr 21, 2020

A
I used a 10A fuse to power a 200w 2 channel amp. If you want to get scientific, you can start with the highest amp fuse and use a current probe to determine how much current your amp draws. Then choose the fuse accordingly.
angelo  May 05, 2020
A
The fuse is already installed in the red wire as you can see in the picture

Q
Do you require this to install the amp to an OEM radio if you are using an amplifier Adapter Interface to Factory OEM?
raymond  Feb 19, 2020

A
Yes, I used these cables on my installation. You might be able to buy them locally from someone else but it was handy that Crutchfield had everything I needed.
jon  Mar 11, 2020
Q
On the red cable, how far is the fuse holder from the crimped ring terminal? I don't want the installed fuse location to end up in some inaccessible recess behind my dash.
russell  Jan 04, 2020

A
The fuse is approx 6" from a tag end of the coil so it will be accessible at the point of connection/termination
james  Mar 12, 2020
A
It's about 18" from my battery connection
