Excellent unit. Set up (including firmware update) was a breeze. Used second speaker jacks to feed the subwoofer. Sound is extremely clear and amazing!

Pros: System set up, flexibility, and sound quality.

Cons: Separate subwoofer out would be a nice addition.

I installed the SA-5 a week ago and it was a snap. Works as advertised and I love its relatively small size. I have not experienced the WiFi dropouts that some reviewers alluded to - hopefully I won't have that problem. For the future it would be nice to have volume control separately on the two sets of speakers, but I realize that would probably require separate amplifier paths.

Great equipment, close to perfect

Greg from Morristown, TN on 3/12/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Pros - Simple install, major upgrade to make old equipment usable with SoundTouch Technology. Cons - Interface for older equipment not provided. The old equipment was connected with a 9 pin cable. That cable is now obsolete and I cannot use the speakers attached to this amp with the head end unit as had previously been done.

Pros: Simple install, major upgrade to make old equipment usable with SoundTouch Technology. Sounds just as expected. with Bose

Cons: Interface for older equipment not provided. The old equipment was connected with a 9 pin cable and there is no 9 pin connector on this device. That cable is now obsolete and I cannot use the speakers attached to this amp with the head end unit as had previously been done.

Bose gets the job done .

I did a bunch of research and decided to go with this amp and run it with the definitive technology 251's. I went back and forth between a Yamaha receiver and bose speakers. I decided on this do to the ease of use, and the fact that you add on to the system down the road. I played around with the amp at the bose store and it was just too easy to play with . The app works great no issues what so ever. It's nice to play over wifi music doesn't stop when you get a call and the range is much better than bluetooth. I will build up my sound touch system with time.

Pros: Super user friendly even my wife can do it ...

Cons: Only complaint I have is that I wish you could do a zone a and zone b.

Bose SoundTouch SA-5 amplifier

Crutchfield customer from Newark, OH on 7/8/2017

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Great product for the purpose. I set up (2) SA-5 with (8) 251 Speakers. A lot of bang for the buck. Very full sounding system without a subwoofer. For this outdoor system a subwoofer just was not practical, and with the fullness of the SA-5-251 combo it was not missed. iPhone interface is intuitive and easy to use for the entire family. Setup was relatively easy. I did have a little hiccup when adding the second unit. I called Tech support at 8pm on a Thursday night. Tech that helped was EXTREEMELY knowledgeable. Turned out to be as simple as updating the firmware in the second unit.

This is an easy system to install and a lot more reliable than other Bluetooth speaker systems. I purchased this piece after going to the Bose store to figure out how to hook up existing speakers with my Bluetooth music stream.

Pros:

Cons: The sound quality is an 8 out of 10. I might need to figure out how to adjust the speakers when I have more opportunity to play with the system.

can you add this to the soundtouch 300 bar to use for tv speakers? I currently have the soundtouch 300 and acoustimass 300 hooked up to my tv, the sound is great but I have in-ceiling wired speakers from my previous system that I would like to use. Would this be the answer to my problems and could I link all these together not only for my tv sound but for music and entertainment as well?
[ Joel  Dec 30, 2017 ]

A
Sorry, no. The HDMI and optical inputs of the SoundTouch 300 Soundbar cannot be shared with other SoundTouch devices (like the SA5 amplifier). If you want to add some wireless surrounds, you can use the compatible VI300 but these have built-in speakers are would not power your in-ceiling models: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_018VI300/item.html

Yep! As Robert alluded to above, all of the Bose SoundTouch components have the ability to play the same song simultaneously; or you can choose to play different songs through each individual Bose SoundTouch component in your home. All sound touch devices that are on the same network can be linked to play the same thing. The amp can also play via blue tooth or aux, but I? dont think Bluetooth and aux connections will not "back feed" via WiFi to the other devices on your sound touch system.

Does this go to sleep automatically or remain powered on? The other sound touches (20 &30 do go into sleep after 20 min)
[ Foxknows  Apr 12, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
I'm afraid there's no specific mention of an "auto" power off feature for the SA-5 in the specs or owner's manual. Given that there is no physical on/off switch or button on the amplifier itself, it is very likely that it will automatically shutdown after a given time period of no music playing through it (like the other SoundTouch speakers); but if you'd like to find this out for certain your best bet is through Bose directly. You can call them at 800-999-2673 or check their support site: https://www.bose.com/en_us/support.html

[ Jacob  Apr 08, 2017 ]

can I connect like some type of mic or a way to do karaoke through this system?
[ jose  Jan 18, 2017 ]

The Bose SA-5 offers no option for connecting a microphone for Karaoke. For that, you may want to consider a system like the Singtrix Party Bundle: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_220SINGTX1/Singtrix-Party-Bundle.html While I know this isn't the answer you were looking for, I hope the information helps.

Can this Amp be used with non-Bose speakers?
[ Clay  May 03, 2016 ]

My understanding is yes. I have not hooked mine up yet but the information from Bose is that they will work on any speakers as long as the oms match is correct. I will be using this amp with non-Bose and Bose speakers. You can determine this by looking on the back of your speakers and following the installation instructions from Bose.

[ Robert  May 03, 2016 ]
Q
Will this unit support 4 bose speakers and a sub woofer I already have?
[ Carl  Apr 16, 2016 ]
1 answer
A
You can wire up to four speakers to the amp (each speaker must be a minimum 8-ohm impedance), but there's no dedicated subwoofer output on the Bose SA-5 amplifier so your subwoofer must accept speaker-level inputs in order to work with the SA-5. I hope that helps. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=159

Q
Do you need a wifi network for this receiver to work? (wanting to use this out at the lake where wifi is banned)
[ mdside  Apr 07, 2016 ]
1 answer
A
Yes. You need a Wi-Fi network in order to control the player with the Bose APP and to stream audio content from your home network and online music services. While the SA-5 also features Bluetooth, it must be connected to a Wi-Fi network initially for setup and updates before you can pair any Bluetooth devices. I hope that helps! Q
Can you switch between speakers A and B? If so, can you do it from the app, and lastly, can you play A and B at the same time?
[ Ryan  Feb 10, 2016 ]

The amplifier can only broadcast one input at a time to all speakers attached. What is broadcasting on speaker A will be the only thing available on B. If you want different music you will have to by another amplifier.
