Digital connections with high-resolution playback

When you connect your computer to the A-S801's USB input, your digital tunes will benefit greatly from this amp's high-quality ESS SABRE digital-to-analog converter (DAC). It converts your digital files into analog signals, preserving all of their detail, for accurate sound. This DAC can also handle high-resolution music, including DSD files and 24-bit/192kHz PCM files. There are also optical and coaxial digital inputs — connect a TV or Blu-ray player to these inputs, and enjoy movie sound through your stereo speakers.

Great sound from any source

With digital or analog signals, this amp delivers sound that's dynamic and clear. Thanks to anti-resonance construction, a symmetrical circuit layout, and high-quality components, the A-S801 keeps distortion levels incredibly low for superb sound quality. If you need to make some adjustments as you listen, there are front-panel tone controls for bass and treble. There's also a loudness control, for bringing out more detail and depth while listening at low volume. Or, bypass these controls with Pure Direct mode, which eliminates signal degradation as your music travels a more direct circuit path. For listening to CDs, engage CD Direct Amplification — it matches the input levels of the source with the amp to further minimize noise introduced at the amplification stage.

"Natural Sound" Concept: Yamaha, with a long history of over 125 years as a musical instrument maker, also has a high reputation for HiFi components. Yamaha's A-S801 integrated amplifier takes advantage of this rich experience and high technological expertise. Based on the concept of "Natural Sound", for reproducing all music as it really sounds, and built with scrupulous care from circuit design to basic sound production, the A-S801 reproduces high sound quality and musically rich sound.

Proprietary Yamaha Technologies: The Yamaha A-S801 integrated amplifier employs proprietary Yamaha technologies for optimum performance and sound reproductions.

  • ToP-ART Design: When processing and transmission of the audio signal is simple and direct there is less chance of it being affected by noise and distortion. Yamaha's amplifier design technology called "ToP-ART" features an I/O (input to output) Direct Symmetrical Design, with left and right channels organized in a straight, symmetrical layout for highest signal purity.
  • High-Strength Chassis: In order to effectively dampen the vibrations that have adverse effects on sound quality, the A-S801 chassis has a double bottom design with a 1mm iron plate.  A solid center bar further enhances high rigidity and dampens vibrations.
  • ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough): In addition, the power transformer and heat sinks in the power amp section are supported by an extremely strong and stable ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough) base.

High Current Amplifier: The Yamaha A-S801 features a dynamic, high current stereo amplifier with low impedance drive capability. The amp is rated at 100 watts x 2-channels, measured from 20-20 kHz into 8 with 0.019% THD (120 watts x 2-channels, measured from 20-20 kHz into 6 with 0.038% THD).

ESS Sabre 32-Bit DAC: After careful listening evaluations, Yamaha selected the 32-bit, two-channel SABRE Premier Audio DAC from ESS Technology, Inc. Most notable is its high precision processing power of 32-bit audio along with the ability to handle large amounts of audio data with full PCM 384 kHz and native DSD 5.6 MHz. Since the built-in D/A converter generates its own master clock, an original jitter elimination function is also included, permitting D/A conversion with an extremely low impact of clock jitter. Moreover, a two-channel D/A converter is housed inside the chip which applies a double differential operation. The result is exceptional high performance and high quality signal output with a superior signal to noise ratio.

High Quality Parts: Custom-made power transformer, custom-made block capacitors, two direct signal path speaker relays, one-point grounding system, aluminum-extruded heat sinks and other top-quality parts effortlessly handle demanding audio signal conditions. The quality of each individual part, as well as how they work together, basically determines the sound quality of any component. Yamaha uses only very high quality parts, carefully selected and tested.

CD Direct Amplification + Pure Direct Mode: With a straight connection to the CD input, CD Direct Amplification maximizes the CD source's signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, engaging the Pure Direct mode causes the music signals to travel the shortest possible circuit route, bypassing the buffer amp, the tone, loudness and balance controls to virtually eliminate any signal degradation for the purest sound quality.

Connections

Gold-Plated Terminals: The Yamaha A-S801 has gold-plated terminals for all of its inputs and outputs. These gold-plated terminals ensure a high quality connection that prevents signal loss.

USB (Type-B, 2.0) Port: The USB DAC function supports native DSD (2.8 MHz and 5.6 MHz) and PCM (384kHz/32-bit*) resolutions. This function allows for a direct connection to Windows PCs and Mac computers which opens the door to play back of the highest resolution audio content offered today. The Yamaha-developed USB device controller has its own master clock that eliminates PC jitter. The driver is a low loss, high throughput ASIO 2.3 Yamaha Steinberg USB driver. During playback, indicators on the front-panel clearly show which sampling frequencies are currently being used. The amplifier's USB connection supports the following operating systems:

Note: *A compatible Windows PC will support up to 32-bit audio. A compatible Mac computer will only support up to 24-bit audio.

Analog & Digital Inputs: The Yamaha A-S801 integrated amplifier offers analog & digital inputs for connection of a variety of home audio components.

  • RCA + Phono: The Yamaha integrated amplifier is equipped with six analog stereo (RCA) inputs for connecting external analog audio sources, including a turntable. The Phono input can be used to connect a turntable with an MM phono cartridge to play vinyl records. The unit's Phono input also features a ground terminal.
  • Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The A-S801 is equipped with both optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital audio inputs. The optical and coaxial inputs will accept 2ch PCM (not Dolby Digital/DTS). The audio stays in the digital domain, giving you pure, pristine dynamic sound for all your entertainment sources, from sports and other programs to movies and concerts.

Recording Outputs: There are also two pair of RCA outputs for recording audio through the amplifier to recording device.

A & B Speaker Terminals: The Yamaha integrated amplifier features binding post terminals for its A & B speaker outputs. You can use the A & B speaker outputs to power two pair of speakers, or bi-wire a single pair of compatible speakers. The terminals are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are too far apart for dual banana plugs.

Sub Output: A terminal for connecting a subwoofer is provided, allowing you to increase the bass output of your system for a more powerful sound with better overall sound quality

Headphone Output: The A-S801 integrated amplifier is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone output for connecting a pair of headphones (sold separately). When a set of headphones is plugged in, the speaker outputs are automatically muted.

USB-A Power Port: There is a USB (type-A) port on the back of the integrated amplifier that can be used for charging and powering an electronic device. The USB (type-A) port is rated at 5V/0.5A.

Note: This USB (type-A) port does not support media playback.

Controls

Sophisticated Front-Panel Design: With a beautifully simple and unique design inherited directly from Yamaha's HiFi audio components, this amplifier also boasts an easy-to-operate button layout. The aluminum front-panel has a richly textured silver hairline finish. The control knobs are also of the same luxurious construction as used on Yamaha's top-end models. The rotary encoder makes it quick and easy to select input sources. The luxury hairline finish material offers a nice tactile feeling. LEDs clearly show which source is selected, so you can easily switch sources even in a dark room.

Simple Remote Control: The clean, simple design of the remote control provides easy-to-understand one-hand operation. The easy-to-use design makes it simple to adjust song volume and order. The remote has a sophisticated looking hairline finish that matches the design of the amplifiers. You can also use the remote to control a Yamaha CD/SACD player.

Variable Loudness Control: The A-S801 also features a new analog loudness control on the front-panel that uses electronic volume for higher sound quality, which lets you adjust the loudness effect as desired. Separate from the overall volume, this controls the balance of the low- and high- frequency sounds, providing full tonal range at any volume level; compensating for the natural loss in the human ear of high and low frequencies at soft levels.

Tone Controls: The integrated amplifier features independent bass (20Hz-400Hz band) and treble (3.5kHz-20kHz band) controls so you can increase or decrease the low band and high band frequency response (+/-10dB). The entire low and high bands are increased or decreased (you cannot indicate a specific center frequency for bass & treble). You can also adjust the output balance of the left and right speakers.

Impedance Switch: The integrated amplifier features a rear-panel impedance switch to match the impedance level of the speakers connected. Choose High or Low:

  • High: Select High if using one set (A or B) of speakers with impedance of 6-ohm or higher; when bi-wiring the impedance of the speaker must also be 6-ohms or higher.
  • Low: Select Low if using one set (A or B) of speakers with the impedance of 4-ohm to 6-ohm; if using two sets (A and B) of speakers simultaneously, the impedance of each speaker must be at least 8-ohms; when bi-wiring the impedance of the speaker must also be 4-ohms to 6-ohms.

Auto Power Standby: The amplifier has a power management function that detects when it hasn't been used for a long time (about 8 hours) even though the power is on, and automatically shifts it into standby mode. So even if you forget to turn it off, power consumption will be minimized.

Q
Can you speak to the "quality" of the phone input/stage for use with a Moving Magnet stylus? Hoping that if I upgrade to the A-S801 I will not need to purchase a separate phono preamp to get the best sound out of my turntable.

This is a great unit and i would purchase again. Clean and powerful. I have had about 3 years. I have an Audio-Technica turntable that has dual out settings to the Amp. Neither worked well in the phone input line (even thought was fine with the NAD amp prior to the Yamaha. There was low level buzz/interference that I could hear regardless if I chose MM or MC on the phone output. Didn't previously use a ground with the turntable but tried that too no change. So I just outputed the turntable to Line 1 on the Amp and it works great.
james  Jun 08, 2023

No need for a phono preamp, the Yamaha 801 has one built in

Greetings Rick, and thank you for your question. We honestly cannot run tests on every receiver, amp, or integrated amp. On paper the phono stage looks to be average. Personally, I run an external, and recommend the people I talk to, to do the same. Voltage increases, distortion lowers, and of course performance increases when you use an external phono stage.

Q
Can I connect a vintage Yamaha Graphic equalizer to this amp? Can you use the PB & Rec to splice in the EQ ? - thanks!
david  Feb 13, 2023
1 answer
A
This amplifier does not feature a pre-out/main-in loop, which would be required to integrate an EQ. The "PB" and "Rec" connections do not function in the manner necessary to connect an EQ. The "Rec" connecctions only output audio that is input into each of the respective "PB" connections.

Q
I have two pair of JBL speakers. Each speaker is 6 ohms. Can I run both sets of speaker on A and B setting at the same time on the Yamaha 801 integrated unit?
philip  Dec 22, 2022
1 answer
A
This amplifier can safely operate at a minimum 4-ohm impedance for each channel (left and right). When running both A and B speakers sets, the terminals are wired internally in parallel. This is to say that the left A and left B terminals are wired in parallel, and the right A and right B channels are wired in parallel. This means that with two sets of 6-ohm speakers, we would be presenting each channel with a 3-ohm load. This will likely cause the amplifier to overheat and could even shorten the lifespan of the amp.

Q
How do I hook up an EQ?
bob  Oct 14, 2022
1 answer
A
Depending on your specific setup Bob, that could be difficult here. These units no longer have a "tape monitor" function, so if you have a vintage pair of Bose 901's and need to use the specific EQ with the Yamaha you can't. You could use an EQ depending on your source. If you have a component EQ with RCA audio ins and outs, you could run it in line with any source that you wanted to EQ (tape/cd etc.). You will not be able to add an EQ to the unit as a whole, you will need to rely on the front panel tone controls if you do not connect your EQ in the first method I mentioned above. I hope this helps, the Yamaha is a fantastic power unit and you may find you use the EQ less and less!

Q
is this rackmountable?
michael  Jul 05, 2022
1 answer
A
There are no provisions for mounting rack mount tabs on this Yamaha A-S801 sadly, Mike. You CAN still use this in a rack mount setup, just you would have to use a shelf that can support its almost 30lb weight. If your stack is tight and you don't have a 1U space to spare, you could consider the Rotel I've linked below. You can get a rack mount kit directly from Rotel for these RA-1572 MKII integrated amps. I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_440A15722B/Rotel-RA-1572-MKII-Black.html?tp=34948

Q
How is the volume control "steps" when using the remote? In other words on my Peachtree Audio Nova65se the volume goes to high or too low with each press of the remote's volume buttons. Would be great if the 801 (and the other Yamaha AS series integrateds) was more precise. Also can the bass and treble be adjusted via the remote or only from the unit? Thanks!

The volume control is indeed very precise on the Yamaha A-S801 that I recently purchased as a Christmas gift. it is paired with Klipsch speakers and Denon CD player - my house is filled with crisp, clean sound. The Bass and Treble can only be adjusted on the unit - I have not changed factory settings - no need!

Q
I'm not seeing this question anywhere but I have a large collection of vintage gear...receivers, amps, cassette decks, turntables, RTRs, etc. played through several sets of JBL and Klipsch speakers. So, my ears are used to more vintage sound. That being said, as I get older I am getting tired of maintaining the vintage stuff and would like to get a more modern integrated amp with a remote, Bluetooth capability, etc. I'm really liking the specs on this Yamaha 801. However, I don't want to lose the sound I am used to. Is there anyone else who has made the switch to a modern integrated amp but is still running vintage gear and is pleased with the sound of the Yamaha? I'm used to big (true 100W+) Sansui, Pioneer, Marantz, etc. receivers. Will I be disappointed?

I have had vintage gear for many years! And this is a great upgrade. I was not disappointed, it's a well thought out while engineered piece of equipment. I love it,
randy l.  Mar 25, 2022

I am very happy with the 801. It replaced a vintage Marantz 1080 DC driving JBL L-112s. It is not as "Punchy" as the Marantz when played loud and not as "warm" as a classic Marantz but it gives very clean accurate sound. I plan to upgrade it with an A-S 2200 or 3200 in the future but it works so well I am in no rush. I would consider it a best buy for the sound vs cost.
john  Mar 24, 2022
A
No, not at all. The tone quality and build quality is second to none. This amp will definitely meet your needs.
howard  Mar 24, 2022
A
Bill - you and I are perhaps of the same "vintage". Most of my stuff is old as well, from a Revox A77, Nakamichi 680ZX, JBE turntable with Grace tonearm, Apogee Centaur speakers. The speakers are absolutely ruthless when paired with bad gear or source material; this Yamaha, which I admit to being skeptical about, is simply fabulous. Sounds much better than the Adcom gear that preceded it, and is probably as good or better than many more expensive "separates" that I ran for many years. I wouldn't have touched a Yamaha amp a few decades back. Things change. You will be hearing your speakers (which are efficient designs and will play quite loudly with this amp), not the amp. Give it a try - my bet is that it will drastically outperform the receivers you mention..

I too had vintage equipment. Yamaha amp, pre-amp, tuner etc from the early 80's. Got this integrated amp with the CD S300, and the T-S500 tuner. Love the entire set up. Also have a Audio-Technical AT-LP7 turntable all from Crutchfield. It is a great set up. Power is fine for what I'm pushing!

How can you add bluetooth connectivity with this yamaha AS-801?
john  Apr 24, 2021

A
Just add the iblue brand Bluetooth Audio Adapter. It easily connects to the back of the amp and any available a/c outlet. All connection cables are included. Hook up is fast and simple and once linked, just move your phone or tablet bluetooth audio setting to the maximum level. From there use the amp controls to adjust sound.

Q
Can this amp set a high pass filter for bookshelf speakers? I want to make sure the smaller speakers don't get low frequencies that the subwoofer will handle.
greg  Apr 06, 2021
2 answers
A
From what i have researched online, this answer from Charles is incorrect. Your main speakers will continue to get the full range of the audio signal. And the subwoofer will get everything 90hz and below, unless you set the crossover on your sub for less than that. Not the best way to implement things really.
ian  Sep 05, 2021
A
Yes, when you connect a sub, the amp will redirect frequencies above 90 Hz to your main speakers and frequencies below 90 to the sub.

russell  Feb 13, 2021

It certainly has all the appearances of aluminum. There is a bit of surface texture that one usually finds on metal rather than plastic. The body of the amplifier is metal and the face appears to be backed by a layer of plastic which shows up at the ends of the front panel. The plastic backing likely gives rigidity to the face panel. I'm pleased with the face panel because it provides good insulation for the contols from the internal mechanism.

Is the loudness control stepped or continuous? I used to have a C-40 control pre amp from the 80's which had excellent continuous volume and loudness controls which allowed you to tailor the sound perfectly
frederick  Feb 06, 2021
6 answers
A
There is a loudness knob. Which allows you to adjust. I keep it pretty low which makes the sound richer for sure. This amp. Reminds me of a high end Pre Amp I had in the 90s. It doesn't have all the unneeded (IMO) sound modifications like concert, movie theatre mode etc. I have it hooked up to 2 big Cerwin Vega crate speakers from the 90s. And it powers them beautifully.
james  Feb 07, 2021
A
The loudness control is continuously variable (not stepped) from "flat" to -30dB. I generally set the loudness to around -12dB for most tracks. My floor standing 3 way's are by no means perfectly flat reference speakers, but it is worth mentioning that in using either CD or USB (with amp's internal DAC) as the source on my specific setup, that the speaker output is anything but flat with the loudness set to flat. Very harsh sounding in the 1 Khz - 5 kHz range. Setting the loudness to around -12dB fixes this on most tracks. Without an RTA to properly analyze the amp's signal output, I'm very cautious in how much I'd criticize it's frequency response. In terms of clarity and noise; I'm satisfied with both at the amp's price point. Keep in mind with this specific amp, a lot of what you're paying for is all of the various inputs, internal preamp, and internal DAC (not the amp itself). All in all, this amp is great for the price point if you plan to use several of it's *integrated* features. I personally do not use the various inputs / DAC often, and in hindsight would've not gone the integrated route; (I would've shelled out more for a separate amp and preamp for a better overall quality output to my speakers). Hope this helps.

If by "stepped" you mean toggle the answer is no...it is a continuous sweep without positions. Like you I have used my amp from 1970 until I mistakenly thought I had blown out a channel..I got the new Yamaha then realized a crossed wire was killing one channel in the old one...I use the Yahamaha for my turn table and cd in the house and the old me on my studio. The Yamaha is very clean and sharp...tight!

Hi Fred, The loudness control is continuous. I've had my amp for a couple of years now and, well, suffice it to say, I've been VERY satisfied. It's just perfect for my application: this plus an NAD C 546BEE CD player and Steinhauser HD 800 headphones. You're not just in the front row; the sound is as if you're standing on the conductor's podium. Just breathtaking. My primary music interests are classical and jazz. You won't be disappointed with this amp, that I can assure you! All the best, Norm Williamson

Hello: Checking into the HS7s specs for a means of bypassing the built-in bi-amp, I can find nothing to help you with doing so. I don't know what dangers might exist when piggybacking this amp onto these speakers, but I wouldn't experiment. Wish you luck; Crutchfield has some really good bookshelf speakers under $300 per pair. Take care, birddad

Yamaha HS7s are active monitors (they have built-in power amplification). The A-S801 does not have preamp outs. You could use the tape outs to feed the monitors, but

Hi, I am not familiar with the Yamaha HS7's. I have a pair of Yamaha MSP5 studio monitors, which utilize 1/4" phono plug input (or XLR). My MSP5's are ancient, nearly 20 years old, but it looks like the inputs are the same as the HS7. The A-S801 doesn't have 1/4" or XLR speaker outs. I would guess you could order cables that would do the trick, or make them yourself. I don't know how the results would sound. Short answer: it migh be possible, but it's not natively supported. Jim

This amp only has a subwoofer output at the preamp level; I am not familiar with the speakers you mention. If they can accommodate amplifier level inputs as some older subwoofers do they might work, but if they don't my guess would be no...

I'm really not sure. I would just call the customer support number and ask them. They were extremely helpful with all my purchases. By the way I love the Yamaha amp.
bruce a  Dec 02, 2020

I don't think so. Due to the HS7 having its own amplifier and doesn't appear to be defeat able (which would make them passive), these speakers would not be compatible. Also, the rear of the HS7 does not show traditional speaker binding posts, which is how the A-S801 send the audio to connected speakers. I hope this helps, and happy hunting!

Hi, sorry for delayed response. Not sure what you mean - there is a powered connection for Yamaha accessories that might require it and a connection for a pc. Not sure if either is what you are referring to (I'm not using either of them...)

Next to the optical and coax jack there is a USB jack. This is how I connect my computer to the amp, for streaming purposes. There is also a DC out jack, which according to the manual is used to connect a Yamaha AV accessory. I do not use this amp in an AV setup (it's strictly audio for me) so I'm not sure how it would be used.

Hi Chris. I copied this information from Yamaha's web site, hope this helps. "With the YBA-11, you'll be able to stream music wirelessly from a Bluetooth® compatible mobile phone or a PC. I have an as 801 yamaha amp. I previously had an rs700 receiver. As far as the phono feature is concerned, how do(es) the phono specs and performance match up between these 2 products? In your opinion - performance wise, would a phono pre-amp be necessary or advisable for the as 801? This was the case for the rs 700. For that, I got a pro ject pre amp. Tell me what you think, please.
christopher m  Nov 06, 2019

SO, the Yamaha 801 has a phono input. With MM ( Moving magnet) cartridges, the built in phono-preamp will be enough to get a decent signal. Now, if you wanted an even more improved signal, or had a MC (Moving coil) cartridge , you may want to up grade with a component phono-preamp.
thomas  Nov 20, 2019 (Staff)
A
I really can't answer your question regarding the necessity for a phono pre-amp. I think it would need one, but a question easily answered by a tech advisor at Crutchfield. I bought the Yamaha 801 amp for its 4 ohms compatibility to power 301 Buchardt 4 ohm speakers. Of course it got good reviews for the price point. In addition, it is just an old school amp without all the home theater stuff was also a plus.

I have a U-Turn Orbit Plus with a M/M cartridge connected to my 801 phono input. I had to turn off the internal pre-amp for it to even work properly. Way too much signal. I haven't tried it with the internal turntable pre-amp on and plugged into a regular amplifier input but I'm guessing having the pre-amp built into the integrated amp would have a more stable power supply to work with.

Can't say for the iPhone/iPad. I use a MacBook Pro and an HDMI cable. For sound quality I record from CDs in ALAC then play back through the DAC. For MP3 quality sound, don't bother. Just use headphone jack on the iPhone and use a cable connected to the AUX Input. I do that too.

In order to use the built in DAC a device running windows or mac OS must be used. A driver must be downloaded and you must link to the s801 by USB. I've used my phone to connect with this amp. Double RCA in back; into a single plug into your phone jack. I've listened to Amazon music and Sirius radio this way (through the phone apps.). As for the first part of your question, you might want to just consider a media streamer, hooked up to this amp. I have a Cambridge media streamer, and it picks up (through Wi-Fi) music that is physically located in files on my computer. The quality of the music from the media streamer is good. I've never tried to pick up you-tube from the computer with the phone, or the media streamer.

No. It will not handle a 2ohm load. Mine is driving a pair of Cerwin Vega AT-15's at 4ohms with no problem at all. I don't know of any home audio amps that will handle that heavy of a load. Anything lower than 4 will need a car amplifier.

The sound quality is the same. either port can handle Hi_rez files. I've read there can be more issues with USB out than the toslink which is out of the headphone jack. I use the toslink on my iMac and hit sounds superb going into my A-s801. I've used both and neither mattered so I use the toslink to free up a USB port on my iMac. IT's a great amp. You won't regret buying it. It's popular in the audiophile circles I run in if you don't want to spend a fortune on an amp.
peter  Mar 12, 2017
A
I didn't compare both alternatives, but the "classical" and probably most straightforward way to connect both devices is via Toslink and a Mini Toslink Adapter for the Mac Mini headphone jack. A third alternative would be to connect both devices via an Apple TV and AirPlay: The Mac Mini would be connected to the Apple TV via AirPlay, and the Apple TV is connected to the Yamaha 801 via Toslink optical cable. The advantage of this connection method is that you can easily integrate any other Apple device as a music player, e.g. an iPhone, iPod or iPad.

Is the Yamaha 801 a class D amp?
charles  Feb 09, 2017

Yes it is. I picked it because a class D amp generates very little heat, and I had to put the amp inside of an enclosed cabinet. I have had it for a year, and I love it. The sound is as good as my class A/B NAD amp that generates so much heat it will cut itself off unless it is in the open.

Hey Chuck , the A-S801 literature does not say but it acts and sounds like an A/B under normal circumstances. I have been running this amp for about ten months and the speakers I have currently are very efficient and present an 8 ohm load and it sounds very good. The A-S801 has some very nice features also. If it's class D I would be surprised, however if you are running speakers with a 4 ohm load am not sure how good it would be. For the money it's a great amp with great features and I would bet it's not class D

I am interested in the 4 ohm rating of the 801 amp, as I am thinking of getting Magnepan 1.7 speakers (4 ohms) with one of their bass panels (also 4 ohms). Magnepan recommends using a high current amp that has a 4 ohm rating close to double the 8 ohm rating. The literature on the 801 amp just says "4 ohm rating" but not how many watts into 4 ohms. carlos  Nov 06, 2023
1 answer
A
Aside from USB, the A-S801 also features a higher quality ESS SABRE ES9010K2M DAC as well as the ability to support DSD (2.8 MHz and 5.6 MHz) and PCM files (up to 32-bit/384 kHz).

Q
I currently have a Yamaha CA-810 which has both a tape loop and pre-out and main in connections to hook up my Bose 901 equalizer. Looks like the Yamaha A-S801 has neither of these. So is there a way to hook up a Bose 901 equalizer to the Yamaha A-S801 without using another amp?
jimmythec  Aug 28, 2023
1 answer
A
You have a great eye, Jim! While the dual input/output loops on the rear of the Yamaha A-S801 look promising, they will not function properly as a "tape monitor" loop to use the required equalizer for your Bose 901's. We do have some great integrated amp solutions that are specifically designed for use with the special Bose EQ. My personal favorite of the options right now is the NAD C 3050 Integrated in the link below, it provides the same 100-watts RMS per channel as the Yamaha, has the pre-out/main-in loop you'll need, and I cannot help but love the vintage design! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_745C3050/NAD-C-3050.html

Greetings Kris, and thank you for your question. Technically, this is an Integrated amplifier, it does not have a radio tuner, but I see no reason why it would not perform exceptionally well with just about any speakers. It has a ton of very good clean power.

Q
I am wanting to confirm that this integrated amp will fit on my turntable stand. The depth listed here is more than listed anywhere else. On Yamaha's website, it says it's 15-1/4"deep. Did Crutchfield include the knobs in their measurement? Thanks!
davey  Jul 25, 2022
1 answer
A
We show that the Factory manual from Yamaha also states the 15 1/4" depth too, Davey. What's most likely happening here is that the factory measurements are the case of the unit, and our larger measurement is to the rear of the speaker binding posts, that could explain the extra amount. We can probably trust the 15 1/4" measurement from Yamaha, but make sure to consider the rear connections too when measuring. That's also why we offer our 60 day satisfaction guarantee, just in case! We are going to reach out to our research team to confirm, and will update with what we find! I hope this helps Davey.

Yes you can hook up most CD/DVD players with an optical (TOSLINK) or coaxial cable. I have an old H&K DVD player that i have connected with a coaxial cable that is used for CD playback and it sounds very good. I have also hooked up a Yamaha CD-C600 5-CD disc changer using a TOSLINK cable and it also sounds very good. I like the Yamaha A-S801 so much I bought another one for my bedroom setup. There is a big difference in sound quality when compared to a good AVR like a Denon and it plays very loud and clean with low impedance speakers.

Q
On the Yamaha A-S801 when using the remote to adjust volume levels are the increases or decreases in predetermined steps (i.e. 0.5dB or 1dB) or are they variable?
victor  Oct 10, 2019
5 answers
A
The volume controls on the A-S801 are a servo-linked potentiometer -- using the remote activates the servo motor to turn the volume knob, which allows for incredibly precise control of the volume
adam  Feb 19, 2024

Variable.
neil  Oct 26, 2019

Hi Victor, thank you for your question. The volume adjustments when using the remote, will be variable adjustments.
jessica  Oct 25, 2019 (Staff)
A
No- it seems to be variable.
james  Oct 25, 2019
A
If the volume knob is at zero (approx. 7 o'clock position) and you press and release the + on the remote, the vol. knob moves to approx. the 8 o'clock position. After that, each press and release will move the knob one small step. A step is probably one minute/step or less. If you press and hold the + or - on the remote, the knob will continuously move until you release the button.

How is the sound from a record/turntable compared to sound coming via a DAC? Is it better, worse, as good as? If the sound from DAC is very good, it doesn't follow the sound from the record will be as good-Different circuitry.
edward  Dec 23, 2017
2 answers
A
The sound from a turntable is as natural as hearing it live, but there can be noise along with left/right channel audio alignment issue from the needle touching the album. Digital audio does not have that noise and almost always does not have the alignment issue. However, where it is digital, it does not have a smooth sound wave to it and a handful of people have been able to hear that! I don't' think there is a clear winner for overall sound. Now, we do have advisors that can discuss your preferences and things to give you a personal recommendation on this. You can reach on by calling 1-800-324-9695. Edward Sorry I can't answer your question because as of yet I have not used the DAC interface as a source to compare with the analog output of the turntable. However I am in the process of setting up a digital library and intend to do so fairly soon. I can note at this time the Yamaha S801 is a fine integrated amp and to the extent I have used its non DAC features, including using a turntable as a source, the Yamaha S801far exceeded my expectations and am very happy with its performance. Does the DAC in the A-S801properly decode HDCD format? I have a number of HDCD's that I'd like to play via a transport, connected to the A-S801 via digital out. Will the A-S 801 recognize the HDCD format and decode?
tom  Aug 07, 2017

HDCD simply increases the 16Bit information of standard CDs to 20 bits. The ESS Sabre DAC built-into the Yamaha supports up to 32 Bit content so, you'll be good to go, yes. I hope that helps. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan

Yes, but for the best results with high res ensure you install the Steinberg USB driver and ASIO 4All. It takes some fiddling with your settings, but for high res you want the raw file streamed directly from the computer to your amplifier, and decoded by the ESS DAC onboard the A-S801 (not you computer's sound card).

With a true 90 watts of rms power per channel in the A-S801, it should be able to power your Polk LSI M703 speakers just fine. The polka are fairly efficient at 88 she sensitivity . You will find they will play quite loud with 10 to 20 watts. Unless ofcourse you are a head banger, then 200 watts per channel won't be enough.

I think they are a great match. This amp has a lot of clean neutral power. Crisp high's and very clean snappy bass, in a good way. Q
I know I can hookup my Bose 901 equalizer to an R-S700 (pre-amp out, main in), but the A-S801 doesn't have this coupler. Could I instead use the REC/PB of line 2 or 3 to connect this equalizer? On my old Denon amp, I could do both, but using the coupler produced a far richer sound. Does this mean that the R-S700 could also yield better audio quality for Bose 901 speakers than the A-S801?
hellinckx  Sep 30, 2016
1 answer
A
I suppose your assumption is correct. I can't make a statement on the sound quality of the R-S700, but I don't think the weaker connection options of the A-S801 (with regards to your specific needs) will be overcompensated by it's superior overall architecture. I purchased the A-S801 just because of one unique and outstanding feature: it's high quality SABRE digital audio converter (DAC). In combination with it's optical line in, I can stream digital sound right into the A-S801, without pre-converting it to analog signal in a device with a weaker DAC (e. g., like embedded in Apple's lightning docking station). The conversion is performed by the A-S801's DAC - the resulting sound is simply great (as long as the speakers are also high quality).

Hi Joshua, This is how you use your amplifier's Digital Analog Converter (DAC) to play digital music from your computer and convert it to analog. There is an explanation in the owners manual. You do need a USB B male end and USC C male end to plug into your computer just like a printer. You need to download software onto your computer and install. This is explained in the owners manual, and was very easy. This is the reason I bought this amplifier as it had this DAC capability. Hope this was helpful. Mark

Yamaha has an optional Bluetooth receiver that you can use to stream audio from your iPhone and iPad . For the MacBook connect a USB cable between your MacBooks USB A port to the AS 801's USB B port on the back. Set up the audio connection in the midi and speaker function in the MacBooks preferences. You should be able to stream songs directly from your iTunes library. Oh, make sure iTunes is in session before setting the audio functions. Happy streaming

Joshua, You will need to add a Sonos as a component (and I recommend also getting a Sonos Boost) and then you will be good to go!
andrew  Aug 05, 2016
A
The device has no local storage. It is not an external drive/ DAC combo, but rather a receiver with an excellent onboard DAC and the ability to connect to a computer via a USB A- USB B cable. To do this, you simply run the cable from a USB port on your computer (Audirvana Plus has very good instructions for choosing the best USB port for this) to the USB input on the back of the receiver (see photos on Crutchfield's page for the item). It has a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) rating of less than 2%, which is lower than most external DACs and receivers in this price range or higher and sounds phenomenal. I couldn't recommend it more highly.
james  Aug 05, 2016

Is the ESS Sabre DAC built into the A-S801 that is used for digital files via the USB the same DAC that also runs the coaxial and optical inputs?
cristofori  Jun 25, 2016

I'm assuming it would be.. The Sabre DAC is great, I don't see why they would put a separate one in for optical or coaxial. I have this system myself and use the DAC on a daily basis and it has been fantastic. I highly recommend it.
robert  Jun 26, 2016
A
That would be my guess. It's hard to imagine they would use more than one DAC in a stereo receiver, especially when they tout the inclusion of the Sabre so proudly. The receiver sounds phenomenal, regardless, and it's hard to beat the low THD level, for the price. That said, if you want to know for sure, I would simply call Yamaha. They have very friendly, knowledgable support staff.

You could attach an iPod (Lightning) Dock to one of the line in connector pairs of the A-S801. Disadvantage of this solution: The sound is remarkably worse than that of a pure digital transmission, as it seems to me that the DAC embedded in the Apple iPod Dock doesn't have a high-end digital-to-analogue converter chip inside. If you own a newer "lightning" iPod, I don't see any alternative to streaming, because any previously manufactured high-end (hi-fi) DACs are not available with a lightning connector. Therefore, I decided to purchase an Apple TV when I purchased the Yamaha A-S801 Silver. The Apple TV is directly attached to to the optical input connector of the Yamaha A-S801. Music from the iPod is streamed to the AppleTV via AirPlay, which means the sound is transmitted to the AppleTV and from the AppleTV to the Yamaha amplifier purely digital, without any conversion. The final conversion happens inside the A-S801 which has a very good DAC chip inside. I found the sound to betty very good if I use the iPod/AppleTV/Yamaha combination in this way.

van  Aug 28, 2015

By Marantz 200 watt speakers you are referring to Marantz speakers that can "handle" 200 watts, presumably at 8 Ohms impedance (pretty standard). Since the amp has a Speaker A (Left and Right), a Speaker B (Left and Right), and a Speaker A + B (Left and Right on each of two different sets of speakers) you are golden: yes, you can run all 4 speakers provided that you satisfy the following criteria: this amp needs to be configured for either 8 Ohm minimum or a 12 Ohm minimum when running A + B, meaning that you really need to ensure that both your sets of speakers are 8 Ohm impedance minimum. To the best of my knowledge, the 901's are in fact 8 Ohm, but you'll have to check the plaque on your speakers or the owners manual to ensure that the Marantz are 8 Ohm too. You should not (to the best of my knowledge) run an 8 Ohm set of speakers and a 4 Ohm set of speakers on the A + B configuration on this amp.

Yes, you will get the same sound quality from a DVD player as a CD player. The amp is doing all the important work. For speaker cables, use any 10 or 12 gauge cable. "high end" speaker cables are just gonna cost you more. It's just copper. Hope this helps.
