No bass

Tom from Saginaw, MI on 5/9/2019

2016 Jeep Renegade

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

A lady at Crutchfield suggested these to even out too much treble in the dash speakers, WRONG, hardly any bass whatsoever, my factory speakers have way more bass. Going to put factory speakers back in if I can't find a more bass speaker. Can't return the speakers because I waited so long to put them in. Gets 1 star because I'm stuck with them.

Pros: Good sound overall.

Cons: Hardly any bass.

Clean and crisp - but no more

Crutchfield customer from Santee, CA on 5/7/2019

2006 Honda Odyssey

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Clear crisp sound. Zero bass. I think these have less bass than the factory speakers I removed. I understand they are only 5.25" speakers, but to have little to no bass was a surprise to me. It could be that they are being driving by a Kenwood head unit and I need to upgrade to an Alpine - but I'm not sure. Obviously a subwoofer system will fix it.

Pros: Clean, crisp audio. Easy install. Brackets made them fit without modifications.

Cons: Zero bass.

Jeep upgrade

Crutchfield customer from Grandview, MO on 4/15/2019

2001 Jeep Wrangler

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I replaced the front dash speakers in my 2001 Jeep TJ with these and, although it improved the sound, it is nowhere near what I hoped for. Good sound but still weak compared to the sound bar. Even though these fit the stock sound bar, I chose not to use them in that location and I am really glad I made that choice as they don't have the oomph I was looking for.

Pros: Good clear sound but still small. Easy installation. Definite improvement over stock Jeep speakers

Cons: Did not meet my (unrealistic?) expectations

A step up from stock but far from amazing.

Crutchfield customer from Chattanooga, TN on 4/14/2019

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

These are ok. They were brighter and fuller than stock speakers but still lack depth. I tried them on head unit but later upgraded to an external amp. They fumble with bass and blurr with too much volume. So if you are looking to just replace blown factory and don't have a lot of expectations they will do fine. They are a perfect upgrade for the price but for a bit more money you can achieve a much better sound.

Pros: Water resistant Low power needed Better then stock

Cons: Lack brilliance and depth. Can't handle too much power or volume.

2003 Jeep Wrangler

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Purchased for 2003 Jeep wrangler front dash. These speakers replaced my original factory speakers. They have a clearer sound than the factory speakers but are not any louder and have less bass. My factory speakers were two ways and in a built in enclosures. To be fair I am only pushing 17 watts to the speakers and they really require more to get the full potential out of them. I have a Sony head unit but will be upgrading to something with blue tooth and more power soon. I have a pair of Kickers in the soundbar and they perform better with low power than the Polks. I may try putting some speaker mats around these also.

Pros: Cost, easy install thanks to wiring harness and mounting plate supplied by Crutchfield

Cons: Not really a con but as with any quality aftermarket speaker you will need an amp to see the real potential of the speakers.

I wish I could say it sounded good. Unfortunately it didn't, if not a little worse than my 14 year old factory speakers. Just to be fair, I upgraded my head unit as well (DEH-S5120BT) and compared my old and new 2 pairs (front and rear) of Polk speakers. Kudos to Crutchfield for fast service and supplying necessary accessories made the installation a breeze. I will be keeping the speakers just because not worth the trouble returning, but IMO, don't consider this model as an upgrade, I do not recommend.

Pros: None

Cons: Speakers didn't come with gasket and factory nor Polk supplied grill doesn't fit.

If you own a 2002 dodge dakota reg cab, these speakers will not fit they are too small. When I uninstalled the factory speaker from the driver side door I noticed that they they were larger and measured 6 1/2". In my defense this was my first time installing aftermarket speakers my planning could have been better I should have measured the stock speakers before placing my order.

I put in a daily driver ( 04 Subaru Forester XT ) to minimize the miles/gas/extended warranty on my truck. Doors get a significant amount of water in them, so I chose these. For the price I couldn't be happier. Well worth it, & with only after market head unit pushing them, the bass is better than with the rear stock " sub ". AS WITH MOST SPEAKERS, FINDING THE RIGHT TUNING IN YOUR SETTINGS allows for adequate bass. Definitely would buy again (3rd time).

Pros: Marine certified.

So far a vast improvement over stock! The adapters crutchfield includes (thank you Crutchfield!) fit perfect in my Jeep TJ dash no trimming or modifications required. Currently only pushing them with the head unit, will be amping up the power here soon, pun intended, and we'll see how it goes. These are already way clearer than the factory paper jobs that I had, very crisp clean sound under low power, can't wait to see how they wake up once driven With some real power.

Great sounding speakers with impressive clarity. There isn't much low end (it could be largely due to my vehicle's setup), so you may want/need a small sub to balance out the sound. For my application, they required "speaker pods" (or baffles), but that's a consequence of the location in my vehicle, not the speakers.

Pros: Marine Certified Fairly Well Priced Clear

Cons: May require a subwoofer

Installed these in place of my old Mopar 13 year old paper speakers. No noticeable difference. Basically a waste of money.

Pros: None.

Cons: Not better than cheap originals.

Crutchfield response on 9/4/2018
Aftermarket speakers, like these Polks, often require more power to be effective. Factory radios often don't have the power output to do aftermarket speakers justice. When distortion occurs, many times it can be mistaken as a problem with the speakers, but it can actually be a weak amplifier, like the one in a factory radio, having trouble delivering the power that the speakers require. This is when upgrading the radio or adding an amp really allow speakers to sound their best, especially in open-air vehicles, like Jeeps. Our Tech Support specialist, Jason, reached out to Jim to help him further, or set up a return for these speakers.

Good replacement for the stock 2018 Jeep Compass. Adapter and connector good fit just need to enlarge holes so stock screws can be used. Also when securing speaker to the adapter spend the money on small bolt/washer/lock washer/nut, the screws that come with speakers are useless. Also don't waste your money on the tools because I did and they were useless on the Jeep Compass door.

Pros: Very clear sound, crisp. easy to install.

Cons: skip the tool purchase. slight modification may be need in securing to door (that's by choice)

Not much change with stock radio, but really nice with Sony MegaBass

Bill from Hamtramck, MI on 5/20/2018

2004 Honda Civic

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I put these in my 2004 Civic (rear speakers) first, and then replaced the stock head unit with a Sony WX-GS920BH a couple weeks later. With the stock radio, the treble improved in the back, but that was about it. When I turned it up, it gave an unhealthy, almost-clipping sound just as easily as the stock front speakers. The better head unit went in last night, and at first, these still weren't a big change from the stock speakers in the front. As I was playing with the settings, though, I tried the MegaBass. I was a bit hesitant, with the little 5.25" (seemed smaller when I held them) speaker and no sub, yet, but it was a night and day difference. Not a hint of clipping up to louder than I want to play them and, while the volume increase was about the same in front and back, these were suddenly dramatically crisper than the stock speakers up front.

Pros: Sony MegaBass loves them. Nice treble.

Cons: Not a big change from the stock speakers, *if* you keep the stock head. A lot smaller than the stock rear speakers on a 2004 Civic.

Bought these for my 2015 Kawasaki Vaquero. I first replaced the stock OEM's with the METRIX KVR52's. They definitely sounded better but these POLK DB522's sound even better than those. The fit is direct. The terminals are just a bit off size but a quick light crimp and they are fine. As always, CRUTCHFIELD is perfect to deal with. Chad in the chat recommended these. These speakers definitely crank at 100W, but the midrange needs a lot of work. I did a measurement sweep on these drivers and you can see the crossover needs a lot of work. The midrange sounds muddy and not clear at all listening levels. The highs are a little harsh, but can be tuned down a little bit. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get the midrange to sound balanced. The bass is good though.

Pros: Loud, good bass

Cons: muddy midrange, phase issues

Great Replacement Speakers for RV

Chris from Jarrettsville, MD on 7/14/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

First a blurb on Crutchfield - it's really nice to be able to talk with a knowledgeable human being when trying to identify the best option for a given application. Paul couldn't have been more helpful, and as a result, there were no surprises with this purchase or subsequent installation....except that the speakers were delivered only 20 hours from completion of the order! As for the speakers, they are everything one might expect from Polk Audio speakers of this size and they put the original speakers that came with the RV to shame in every way. They handle more power than the stock Jensen receiver can put out, have a much wider response range than the old speakers, and sound fantastic regardless of volume (i.e. no distortion). It rained less than 8 hours after installation, and these marine speakers installed outside of the RV sounded just as good wet as they sounded when dry. There were some minor challenges in the actual installation, but none a result of any issues with the speakers. While the 4 speaker mounting holes allow for some leeway to line-up with existing mounting holes, the mounting screws on the separate grille just fit those holes so there is no flexibility there. I was able to hit at least 2 existing holes, and everything fit nicely into place. I caulked the outer plastic ring on the back of the speakers to keep water out of the mounting ring. Properly installed, the speakers are now securely mounted on the RV and should provide years of enjoyment.

Pros: Speakers are well made, attractive, competitively priced, easy to install, and sound great. Paul at Crutchfield was extremely helpful in identifying options that would work for my application. Speakers were delivered 20 hours from completion of the purchase!

Cons: Required some customization to fit existing mounting rings, but not a problem.

These speakers are perfect fit for any late model FLH Harley Davidson touring motorcycle! My bike is a 2004 FLHTCUI, they fit in the front fairing speaker location perfect without any modifications period. And the very best part, they fit into the shallow rear speaker boxes on the tour pack. That allows you to use the original speaker cover and mounting screws. I did have to modify the speaker mounting tabs with a metal file. The mounting tab on the speakers are square, they will need to be rounded off with the metal file so it will fit inside the round speaker box lip. After that your jamming! I also shouldn't leave out, that these speakers are a bargain for the price. All other speakers that proclaim to fit in a Harley Davidson are $200.00 bucks a pair and you will have to alter the bike in some way to make them fit. I did a little home work, and saved money and time! Thanks Crutchfield!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pros: They fit in my 2004 Harley Davidson FLHTCUI with very minimal modifications.

Cons: There are none in my opinion!

A definite improvement over the stock 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon speakers. Allows better sound at a much higher volume. My only complaint is that I wish it had a little better tweeters. I really like crisp & tinny highs; however, it is close to where I like it. It would of been perfect it came with the sticky rope caulk to help the installation and sealing like the OEM speaker did.

Pros: Super easy upgrade, sounds much better at hi-way speeds at higher volume

Great mids and highs for a 5 1/4 speaker. However I wish the speaker would of fit the speaker brackets a bit better in my rear doors on my 07 tacoma access cab. It would of been nice to be able to stuff a bigger speaker in that location such as a 6 1/2 or even a little bigger. Since back space was not an issue just the hight of the top of the speaker an touching the door panels.

Pros: Straight forward install with included wire harnesses and speaker brackets. So easy that my 21 yr old son could do when I told him to put his phone down and try. But then again I been installing system since I was 15 now I'm 44 so I seen a lot of progress over the yrs.

Cons: Very very slight gap along the outside edge of speaker and brackets. Once you align it the best you can an use some weather strip underneath speaker it will help to isolate the front and rear sound waves for better sound. Would of been nice if the form was included in the install gear. But a quick trip to home depot fixed that.

I purchased these after trying a set of kenwood 1365. These are going into a 2005 Civic EX sedan with the stock head unit which puts out 30 watts x 4 channels (Honda doesn't say if that is RMS or peak). I tried them in both the rear deck and the front door locations listening to R&B, progressive rock, and fusion drumming. The PolkDB522 produced good clarity in vocals and most instruments. Listening to the bass line however was a little troublesome. Bass drum notes could be heard well, though. While listening to these I just have a sense that something is missing. It's not quite a full bodied sound. Also the volume was less than the stock speakers. Trying the Polk DB's that are 6 1/2" next. If you are paring these with a quality musical sealed subwoofer, these might do well for you.

Pros: Easy fit, clear vocals and higher instruments, low distortion.

Cons: Bass response is barely OK. Does not pressurize the cabin.

This review is specific to the fit in my vehicle. The 5 stars were just to maintain the rating average since the fit isn't a defect in the speaker. I have 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 regular cab. These speakers are slightly smaller than the factory speakers and require new holes in the vehicle. The oem speaker uses 3 screws, and these use 4. Just FYI for posterity's sake.

Pros: included adapters made for an easy swap for my special factory restricted replacement. i couldn't purchase locally because the retailer didn't know if/how the front door speakers would work or fit. it's the JBL amp system in toyotas i had concern if compatible.

I've got to say, I am very pleasantly surprised! I don't usually write reviews, but I like these little speakers so much that I decided to take the time. I hooked these up to my '05 Jeep Wrangler in the roll bar and dash locations, and running off of my Alpine deck (18W) they sound REALLY good. I replaced Polk 4x6s and Rockford 5 1/4s which I thought sounded pretty decent, and these were a nice upgrade. I can't wait to get the Alpine 45W power pack connected up to see how they sound with some more power pushed to them. But right out of the gate, great highs and mids, and surprisingly nice "low end" for small speakers. I do have a sub in the armrest and would recommend a sub if you can, and/or require some heavy bass in your tunes. But if not, these speakers will jam just fine and get you by. I was on the fence between spending 2-3 times more on some Focals, but decided to go with the Polks because of all the great reviews...glad I did.

Pros: Warm, clear, and surprisingly nice low-ish end for a 5.25 speaker running off of an Alpine deck.

Cons: None that I can think of so far, especially for 5.25s and at this price point.

I am using these for temporary front fill in my BMW 740iL. They fit perfectly, and the install was dead easy. Highs are crisp, but not shrill, and the midrange is good. Being smaller 5.25" speakers, the bottom end isn't all that great, but the system has a good sub in the trunk for that. Even driven full range & wide open by a Kenwood 45w RMS x 4 amp, they get loud and stay clean. For the money, hard to beat. They will eventually move to the rear doors and be replaced by compnents, but if you need a good pair of reasonably priced 5.25" coaxials, these are it...period.

Pros: Great fit Smooth sound Good pricing

Cons: Included grilles...not pretty

These speakers are awesome. did quite bit of research on them before purchasing. Currently running a Kenwood DPX302BT. After the relatively easy installation, and tweaking the head unit these speakers came to life. I am now able to hear background sources and vocals I didn't even know were present. I highly recommend these speakers for the front or rear or both. This was a factory upgrade. I don't have the speakers on an amp because its not needed. If you are looking for that (Boom) these speakers alone will not do it however that is not their intent. These speaker are made to reproduce highs and mids and they do it flawlessly. With no amp I can turn the head unit up to about 33 before they start to distort. I also recommend the wiring and door adapters to make sure everything fits. Would definitely purchase these again in a heart beat.

I installed these speakers in the rear deck of a 2002 Honda Civic. The installation of both of these took about 2 hours but it was totally worth it! This was an upgrade from the factory speakers and the sound quality is now great. Good bass, and even better mids and highs. I Would definately recommend these to a friend!

Pros: Huge upgrade from factory speakers Pretty easy to install Fit in easily Crutchfield instructions helped a ton

Cons: None

Arrived on time - installation was very easy; simple change out with the factory speakers on my 2002 Jeep Wrangler roll bar. Sound (voice and music) is much better, even with the road noise of a Jeep soft top. Great with my new Alpine receiver. Well worth the price.

Pros: Really like them.

Cons: Plastic covers could be a little more substantial, ruggedized.

These are very good upgrade speakers that fit in the factory locations on the Victory Cross Country Tour. They are shallow so no cutting in the trunk location. I did use a self adhesive 1/4 " weather strip on the back of the speaker just to add a little space. The sound is better than stock but needs an amp to really make a difference. I will be ordering an amp soon.

Sound great

These speakers sound great. I recently installed a new alpine receiver and it made the the old factory speakers sound a lot better. Almost didn't buy new speakers, but I'm glad I did. These new Polk speaker are way louder, crisper, and brighter than the original. They have been rained on several times and no change in performance. I would recommend these to a friend.

Pros: Easy install. An extra hand would be useful, due to the over head location. Awesome sound. Shipped really quick.

Cons: Replacement covers look cool but do not offer much protection to the cones. I have kids, so I opted to reuse the OEM covers to keep little fingers off of my new speakers. Holes lined up perfectly.

I bought these speakers to replace the 37 year old factory speakers of my 1979 Jeep CJ7. They are absolutely fantastic. I only drive my Jeep without a top. Even with no top, these speakers can handle the loudness I need to overcome the road noise and open air situation. They are clear, crisp and they were very easy to put in. I would recommend these speakers to any one!

Pros: price, sound quality.

I ordered the Polk Audio DB522's for my 2004 Ford Mustang, after changing the head unit. It sounded awful! The Mach system was replaced by a 1000 watt amp, the JVC head unit and the DB522's and my other Polk Audio speakers! Total rewire of "the system " I am so impressed with these speakers!!!! The sound is so much better! Crisp highs, the mids are great as well! I can't believe that there would be that much of a change, Crutchfield, you have blown me away! My Bazooka 10" sub will be here tomorrow! Can't wait to add that extra bass!

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Marine Certification: Polk speakers are marine certified, making them a good choice for boats in fresh water, convertibles, motorcycles, ATVs, and other applications where the speaker might get wet. Because they have coated steel baskets and the terminals and crossover components are not covered, we do not recommend using them in salt water environments.

No; they will not need a special attachment. If you plan to connect to the original factory stereo, the 4 Ohm impedance may be an issue though. Yes. 40w will power this speaker. You may hear some distortion at higher volumes though without an amp.

Q
what amp is best for the Polk DB22? I have a Jeep Wrangler 2006 and looking to get more sound in there. hard to hear radio when driving with top down.
[ lena  Dec 27, 2017 ]

I'm tempted to tell you to get a marine grade amp and speakers if you spend a significant amount of time with the top off. I made the mistake of not putting my top on and it poured. Probably dropped 3" of rain in under an hour. When I started my Jeep I fried the amp. Get 4 speakers with synthetic cones and surrounds and don't forget to replace the tweeters with something similar.

Hi Anthony, I can try to help you. I got the Polk speakers for my 1979 Jeep. I have no top, so the speakers are exposed to the weather. They have been through many storms and I have had NO problems! They have excellent sound quality. With no top, I have to crank the stereo way up and they put out great sound at high volume!! Hope this helps
