These rugged car speakers are ultra-marine certified, able to shrug off harsh environmental abuse to deliver exceptional sound for nearly any application, from cars to boats.

Don't be shy with the power

The highly efficient speakers will work well with an aftermarket radio, but keep in mind that they will really show off their stuff with a lot of power from an aftermarket amp. The titanium-coated 6-1/2" polymer component woofer cone, backed by a space-efficient magnet, delivers the full sound you've been hungry for. A low-profile, lightweight carbon basket features excellent venting to keep these speakers cool when you're really pouring on the power. And your music's high frequencies will soar, thanks to delicate handling by the newly designed separate 1" Terylene fabric dome tweeter. Polk's well-built external crossover network ensures accurate highs from the tweeter and lows from the woofer.

Woofers

Ultra-Marine Certified: Polk MM1 Series speakers are tested to withstand exposure to salt-fog, UV rays, and humidity, so they'll work well in boats and cars. They also include stainless mounting hardware for corrosion resistance.

Size Classification Note: These speakers are marketed as 6½"; the woofers will fit in standard 6½" speaker openings, but do not use the standard 6½" speaker bolt pattern. In order to install them in standard 6½" speaker openings you must drill new screw holes. If new holes are drilled in the mounting surface of the car, no bracket is needed. If drilling in the car is not an option, the included brackets can be used, which have standard 6½" mounting holes, the Ford non-symmetric four hole pattern, and non-standard 6¾" three and four hole patterns. Enter your vehicle information to confirm fit.

Note: The opening for a standard 6½" speaker is not a 6½" diameter hole. (It's approximately 5" in diameter.)

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Neodymium Magnets: The woofers' neodymium magnets offer an exceptional strength to weight ratio, and are much smaller than typical magnets of equal strength.

Woofer Basket: The woofer baskets are fiberglass reinforced ABS, lightweight and corrosion resistant.

Drainage: The woofer should be mounted so the slots along the perimeter of one side of the basket are at the bottom, so any trapped water can drain.

Tweeters

Material: The tweeter material is Terylene, a brand name of polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Mounting: The supplied mounting cups allow you to surface-mount or flush-mount the tweeters. The tweeters swivel in both housings, allowing you to adjust them for optimum imaging.

Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

  Surface Mount Flush Mount
Mounting Height 1.035" 0.475"
Depth 0.915" (screw depth) 1.052"
Frame Diameter 2.096" 2.294"
Cutout Diameter N/A 1.940"
Crossovers

2-Way Crossovers: Each outboard crossover features a 12dB/octave high-pass network for the tweeter and a 12dB/octave low-pass network for the woofer. The crossover point is 3.0 kHz.

Tweeter Attenuation Switch: You can adjust the output of the tweeter to match a level appropriate to your vehicle or your system. The tweeter attenuation switch can be set to -3dB, 0dB, or +3dB.

Connections: Each crossover has screw terminal inputs and outputs that will accommodate bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.375" wide.

Mounting: There are two screw holes in the base of each crossover for mounting.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 3.571"
  • Depth: 4.258"
  • Height: 1.187"

Q
Do these speakers require an amp? Or can I just connect them to my Aftermarket radio?
samuel  Feb 02, 2024

A
Greetings Samuel. Thank you for your question. They can work with stereo power, but they will not sound very good unless you used an amplifier.
hogan  Feb 03, 2024 (Staff)
Q
Is it possible to mount these in a model 3 with an adapter to fit the hole? If so, where would you mount the crossover?
kevin  Aug 14, 2023
1 answer
A
We need to know the exact year and trim of your Tesla Model 3 to provide any fitment information, Kevin. Use our handy Vehicle Guide in the link below to enter your ride's exact specs and we can tell you which speakers are a good fit! The Polk Audio MM 6502's are a fit in the front door location of the 17-20, but we have little fit info on the newer year models. If you have a 17-20 you can use the Metra 82-9010 in the second link below to mount the woofer. Tweeter mounting is always custom, and you will have to find a custom spot to install the crossover, sometimes being able to be glued in place on the door inside the door panel where it does not affect panel fitment. The Polk's are an excellent choice sound quality-wise, some of my personal favorites! We are always here to help. https://www.crutchfield.com/m_399/Car-Speakers.html

Q
Hi, I have a 2011 Audi S5 Convertible and I'd like to know how to fit the Tweeters in the upper door and what bracket I'd need, please? I'd also like to know with the B&O 12 speaker system will I need the crossover?
therealdjango  Jul 11, 2023

A
Greetings Robert, and thank you for your questions. Replacing factory tweeters are almost always a custom application. There are no adapters for your Audi that we have. You'll need to use backstraps, hot glue, or silicone to secure them. Our technical support team can be of some assistance, if you have questions during your install. As far as the crossovers, the woofers would not need them, but you should at least use them for the tweeters. What is unknown is the level of frequencies the B&O amplifier is sending out to the factory tweeters. These crossovers will ensure no lower frequencies would get to your new tweeters.

Q
If my stock Audio (2023 Grand Cherokee) already has component speakers with a remote mounted tweeter, do I just not use the crossover?
richard  Dec 08, 2022
1 answer
A
There are very few cases where the crossover is not needed, Ricardo. We do not have much information on the premium trim packages in your year Grand Cherokee, but most likely you will need to install the crossover. It sounds like you may have the Mcintosh audio if you have any factory installed tweeters. Consider speaker options that have the crossover built-in on the tweeter wire. The Infinity Primus 603CF's in the link below are a strong contender, and the low impedance technology means you will retain the same volume performance of your original setup if you are not adding powerful aftermarket amps. I hope this helps!

Q
Can I give the tweeters 75 watts of power my amp has DSP built in?
jairen  Dec 12, 2020

I wouldn't (active set up) to much power for tweeters my opinion ... if you use it as a passive set up it should work ok... FYI these speaker might sound good.. I didn't know how to set my DSP properly at the time of purchasing speakers....

Q
I plan to hook these soeakers (polk audio mm6502) to a Kenwood KAC-M1814 amp. I plan to bridge amp to two channels (92 watts RMS) and set the high pass filter to 200 Hz. Will using the HPF mess with the crossover in the MM6502s? I also bought from you a Kicker CXA800.1 subwoofer amp. If I am getting max RMS of 92 watts to component speakers, how many RMS watts should I target for CXA800.1? 300 watts? 600 watts?
micah ries  Apr 22, 2020

The HPF will not hurt the polks - the Polk crossover is likely set somewhere around 1k-3k, so a 200hz HPF will allow the Polk mid-bass woofer to perform better in its ideal frequency range and let your sub handle the lower frequencies. You'll probably want to make sure the speaker HPF is set a little lower than your sub LPF so you have a little overlap between the two. A lot of people will set the sub LPF lower than 200hz, so you may want to bring your HPF down from 200hz, but that's up to you!

Hi GTA Gator, you will be fine bridging the two channels. I actually did this on my motorcycle and it sounds awesome. I thought the same thing initially, but I have previous experience with older systems that weren't as nicely balanced and controlled with todays equipment. The Polks are waterproof and very sturdy. You wont need much volume as the amp will push the sound quite well and clean. As for the Kicker amp I would go with the 300 Watts again todays equipment is nice and clean and you don't need much to get a uniform and complete sound.

Q
Can I run coaxial 6x9's in the rear with an amp and subwoofer and then also run these component speakers in the front? I'm just not 100% sure if it's ok to mix the two or if I need to do all speakers one way or the other.

Hi Lawrence, thank you for your question. You may run coaxial speakers in the rear of your vehicle, and a set of component speakers up front, as well as a subwoofer. You could do this by using either a 5 channel amplifier, or a 4 channel amp for your speakers, and a mono amp for your sub. If you would like a product recommendation and ensure compatibility with an amplifier and your speakers/sub, please chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. They will be happy to help.

Im not 100% clear on your question. Ill try my best to cover all I can think of. If your amp supports a sub and the 6x9's on separate channels, and the sub isnt firing into the same space as the 6x9's you should be ok. You would not want the sub blowing the 6x9's. As for running the coaxials up front, im guessing you mean off the head unit instead of off an amp. In that case, yes that is fine. You may want to feed the front speakers off the amp without the 6x9 and see how it sounds. You may not need those rear speakers. Feeding them from the amp may sound better than the head unit. You would need to run speaker wire from the amp to the coaxials in this config.
george  Dec 12, 2019
A
Using coax speakers in the rear should not be an issue. This is a pretty common practice as rear speakers act mostly as filler since sound quality to listeners in the back is not a high priority. This assumes you are using an amp for the fronts as well - you would not want to run these with no amplification while amplifying the rear.

Speakers have flat blade connectors on back. Polk has supplied plenty of wiring to wire in the crossover which has screw post.

The female quick slides are recommended for the terminals on the Polk midbass driver, yes: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_120FQS10PK/item.html You'll find them listed as a recommended accessory by clicking the "Accessories" tab on the speaker's main webpage. I hope that helps. My bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan

What is the major difference in the bd6502 and mm6502? I have previously owned the db6502 and I'm trying to decide if the extra $$ is worth it for my new build.

I own both and the MM1 series is definitely an upgrade from DB series. MM1 Handles more RMS and Max watts. Both very clear and crisp. I had the DB's in the fairing of my 07 Harley-Davidson. Replaced them with MM1's and put the DB'S in my truck.

Are the tweeters mountable in the center of the speaker as it appears in the pics?
jonathan  Jan 16, 2018

No they can't be mounted in the center. They are component speakerswhich means they are mounted separately . You should buy co-axial speakers. they mount the tweeter in the center. You are probably looking at the picture to the right which shows the speaker cover mounted on top of the speaker.

If it is possible, I could not figure it out and the instructions do not show how. I think a few of the pictures show the coaxial version of the speaker and not the separates.

No. There is not a bracket for that. They are designed to be located at another location preferably closer to ear level. Buy the other model that isn't separate

what kind of amplifier would be good to run a set of these ?

I am using the Infinity Kappa K4 amp because of the power ( 100 watts RMS per channel ) and mainly because it has Clari-Fi - which gives back the sounds that digital compression takes away.

I upgraded to the Polk MM 6502 due to a couple of the old Polk speakers on my boat that were blown due to water damage. I replaced two (2) sets, eight (8) speakers total and used a new Rockford Fosgate R600-4D amp replacing a Clarion amp (also water damaged) for some kick ass sound on the water. They are awesome sounding...good luck with your set up!
