Efficient power handling

The MM 842 SVC 8" 4-ohm subwoofer handles up to 300 watts RMS, with a titanium-coated polymer cone that'll stand the test of time. The fiberglass-reinforced ABS basket resists flexing during heavy excursion, so your sub hits hard without distorting. The sub's inner workings are designed to handle the stress of heavy bass, so go ahead and turn it up.

Marine-certified

This sub has earned Advanced Ultra-Marine certification and an IP56 rating, which means it'll deliver powerful bass in some challenging conditions. The composite cone, waterproof surrounds, stainless steel mounting hardware, and ABS basket all resist corrosion, and the sub even features weep holes for proper drainage.

Product Research

Features

Terminals: The woofer has heavy duty spring terminals that will accept single banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 10 gauge.

Ultra-Marine Certified: Polk MM Series speakers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars (IP56 rated).

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Ported Box Volume: Polk recommends a ported enclosure between 0.66 ft³ and 1.2 ft³.

Q
what would be a really good amp to make these thump?

A
Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Q
Can the Polk MM 842 be used free air or does it need an enclosure?

A
According to Polk's documentation it requires an enclosure. I mounted it in the rear shelf in my G35 sedan, but I think I'm going to move it to an enclosure in the trunk. It doesn't sound bad, but I think it can sound better.

No you should always put any speaker in some kind of enclosure. Make sure it is rated to match the specs on the speaker/ sub woofer
