Earl from Houston, TX on 4/13/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recommend this product. After a few minutes fitting the Ultrafit 1000 to my ears, the product is comfortable through jogging, and working out in the gym. Sound quality is superior to other products I have used in this price range. Design quality is apparent in many features like cord design and ear pieces.

Pros: The cord design resist tangling. Sound quality is great. Overall quality design is apparent in several features.

Cons: Need a little patience for ear fitting.

High Function, Low Fidelity

Dandree from Chicago, IL on 3/21/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The number one reason I purchased these particular headphones was so they wouldn't fall out of my ears while I run. For that function, they pass with flying colors. I also appreciate the two lengths of chord depending on how I want to use them. However, the rubber canals the sound is funneled through muffles the higher frequencies and muddies everything very noticeably. Furthermore, they do not adequately reduce outside noise. The remote on the longer chord is a neat function as well.

Pros: Headphones stay in ears very well and the different lengths of chords (with remote on the longer chord) help to diversify its capabilities.

Cons: The sound quality suffers greatly from the design of the rubber earpieces and everything sounds muddy with all the high frequencies that get filtered out.

Pros: Check my ratings above

Cons: None

Had to return them

Nickap from Kansas on 3/23/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are Not noise reduction earphones, and they never were advertised as such, but had to put something in the rating. Anyway, I purchased these and received them in a very timely manner. When I got them, the sound was just flat or muddy (take your pick). I tried different ear pieces. Nothing helped. Then the wire came loose at the base of the ear piece. I didn't even have them for 2 days. I called Crutchfield and they emailed me the return shipping label. I then bought a different pair of earphones. I was charged the difference between the price of these and the new ones - and they hadn't even received the old ones back yet. The new ones were shipped the same day. These were sent back the next day.

Pros: Crutchfield is easy as all get out to work with, both in ordering and returning products. As for the earphones - they were comfortable.

Cons: Sound quality. Overall quality - I mean really, the wire came loose.

Polk Audio UltraFit 1000

Crutchfield customer from Hamburg,NJ on 8/22/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is excellent with an iPhone, the buttons are easy to use. Its a little cumbersome to put it on, but once you get the hang of it, you should be able to get it on and off pretty easily. Excellent value for the money. Doesn't fall off your ears and doesn't need any kind of adjustment. I haven't compared the sound quality to any other products, so audiophiles may think other wise.

Pros: Stays in your ears and very comfortable. Sound quality is good enough for me( I am not an audiophile) Cable length is adequate enough to route this through your shirt.

Cons: Difficult to put on the first couple of times.

Just what I was looking for

Sound great, stays in ear.

Cons: discomfort after many hours of use.

Much improvement

mbv9415 from Omaha, NE on 9/28/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had difficulty using the Apple ear buds, was looking for something that worked. First use was on several flights last week. Didn't need volume as high as with the old buds and due to the soft earpieces, I was able to hear mid flight announcements and the stewardess just fine without removing the earpiece. For those of us who can't afford/validate the Dr. Dre sets, these are a very good consolation prize.

Pros: The carry case is large enough that I can fit my music player inside. love the multiple cord and ear piece options. Appear more durable than other sets.

Cons: Due to all of the cord and earpiece options, set up the most advantageous one so that every time you open the pouch half a dozen parts don't fall out.

pretty good

Joachim from Fairfax VA on 9/26/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound is not quite as full as I was expecting. But, overall good sound.

Pros: sturdy

Cons: not as full a sound as would hope

Serve the Purpose

TimT from Northern NJ on 8/5/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall these seem like good headphones for athletic purposes but the true test will be durability. I purchased these as an alternative to PowerBeats. I much preferred the Beats sound and fit over the Polk's but after 3 pairs of Beats failed because of sweat, I decided on trying these out. These serve the purpose, with acceptable sound quality, for exercise but I think I'll get a better headphone for travel and home use.

Pros: Seem durable, low cost, multiple cable lengths

Cons: Awkward fit, limited adjustment, sound quality

Great fit, good sound

AWC from CT on 7/29/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These phones fit great and have never come off, or even loose, while hiking or running. The volume control is easy to use and works while my iPod is locked. The only downside is that they can't handle much bass at max, or near max, volume.. This is fine for normal use but a downside when mowing the lawn or doing another activity with loud background noise. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase/value.

Pros: Stable fit; never come loose.

Cons: Can't handle much bass.

Cons: No cons

Nice phones with iPhone compatibility

Scott from Nashville on 5/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice phones. They don't sound quite as good as my large Sennheiser cans (obviously) and lag a bit behind my Sennheiser on-ear portables. However, I needed something that would allow me to answer the phone while running/biking. These fit the bill, and the fit is very secure. No worries at all about them staying in during strenuous exercise. While the mic ends up being rather low when all hooked up, it is easy to clip it to my riding jersey to put it in a nice position. Not an issue while running, works fine even when not clipped. Messing with the various earbud options takes a bit, but once you are used to it they are quite comfortable, even on a 2 hour ride. I did not want noise reduction/isolation as I need to be able to hear traffic and whatnot around me (usually have the music very low or off when on the bike). These fit the bill, still allowing me to hear well even with wind noise while also allowing me to remain fully aware of my surroundings. Build quality so far appears excellent. Flat cords are always a nice touch. Nothing else in this price range was really an option - these are recommended.

Pros: fit, not "great/awesome" but definitely good sound quality. Good fit once you figure it out - phones NEVER fall out of your ears

Cons: Mic ends up a good distance from your mouth when all hooked up. Only an issue while biking, and the provided clip takes care of this. Can take a bit of wrangling before finding the best fit.

Great product with earbugs that actually stay in!

James from West Bloomfield, Michigan on 3/21/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Finally, a pair of earphones that stay in my ears! I have had a very difficult time finding something that doesn't fall out during exercise, and the unique design of these works perfectly.

Pros: Great fitting earphones - unique design keeps them in my ears during workouts. Good sound quality as well. Also like the dual cord lengths.

Cons: Bass sounds not quite as deep or strong as I would like, but overall sound quality is still very good.

Not Really Worth It

Rick from Niantic, CT on 11/6/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They stay in place. I'll give them that. But the sound quality is mediocre. At the price, 2-stars is the best I can do.

Pros: Fit.

Cons: Sound quality.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm pleased with my purchase, I got just what I expected, a good sounding set of headphones that stay in place while working outside and exercising.

Pros: Sound quality is better than standard iPhone earbuds, volume/pause control is conveniently located, and the product delivers what was promised in the ads.

Cons: For myself, I still have a little difficulty with the earphone being inserted into the ear. After a long use ( 2+ hours) my ears begin to hurt but these are far more comfortable than the standard iPhone earbuds.

I bought these in ear head phones for listening to music while on long motorcycle road trips . The fit and comfort of them is great , the sound is super . They stay put , are lite to wear and feel good in my ears under my helmet . The sound and bass were way better than I expected .

Pros: Good quality , nice sound and the extra ear pieces and case are nice features .

Cons: I wish the 3 button remote was usable with the short cord .

Good Quality

Johnvig from Parkland, FL on 5/16/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my Dr. Dre beats with these earphones, the beats are highly overrated and the quality was, in my opinion, not worth double the cost of these Polk earphones! The Polk earphones seem to be well made, but will they stand the test of time? The first thing I noticed was the sound is muddier than my previous Klipsch earphones I was using with my ipod touch, since my Dr. Dre's crapped out. I had to add treble boost in order to obtain a better quality sound. Once I did that the earphones actually sounded good. They come shipped with the medium size ear pieces attached to the unit, I adjusted down one size to smaller earpieces, but they fell out during my workout. I have switched back to the medium and that's where I will keep them. They do tend to hurt after a couple of hours so you'll need to take a break. Overall quality seems to be good, however I'm always skeptical when these major companies contract out with China to make their product. They come with a choice of two cords to extend the length of the wire, the short one being way too short, unless you want to add it to the longer cord for an unusually long cord situation. There is a pause, play, fast forward, repeat control, which has the minimal options. It also includes a built in mic for cellphone usage. It comes with a handy case, that looks sturdy and allows you to carry the earpiece and wire options previously mentioned. Give them a try, as the price is right compared to some of the other options available.

Pros: Good Price! Good Quality! Cellphone Usage!

Cons: Muddier Sound, but good after treble boost.

Great quality and fit. I finally found a pair of headphones that stay in my ears and sound great too.

Pros: Fit, sound quality, functionality.

Nice headphones for the price

Dave B from New England on 1/25/2012

Received these for my birthday about a month ago. Very nice headphones for the price. They fit securely in your ears, are fairly comfortable (I do have to take them out for a few minutes after a few hours wear), excellent iPod control/mic, and most importantly very good sound quality. Having only used the Apple earbuds for the past few years I forgot how good a pair of headphones can sound. The other nice thing is it comes with a long and short cord as well as three different size silicone ear caps and a zippered pouch for storage. One other great feature is that the iPod controller cord is separate from the headphones which allows you to (albeit somewhat clumsily if the cord is long) give any pair of headphones the ability to talk on the phone/control an iPod. Great if you want to use these at the gym or at your desk and a over the ear set while in a noisy environment like a plane.

Pros: Sound Quality, Price, flexibility of included accessories

Cons: Slightly uncomfortable after a few hours of constant usage.

Solution to my running headphones problem

Tim W. from Charlotte, NC on 10/26/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm a marathoner and these finally resolved a year-long search for earbuds that are comfortable during a multi-hour run and stay securely in place. The flat cord doesn't tangle, the two choices of cord length allow you to wear a Shuffle on your waist or sleeve and they're relative easy to put in and adjust around your ear once you get the hang of it. I'd given up on the Apple earbuds and had gone through two other sets of headphones (one over the top of the ear, but a nightmare to insert; another set that was on a band that wrapped around the back of the neck and that hurt my ears during runs of any length) before finding these. No need for you to do the same -- just go straight to the Polks.

Pros: Comfortable; Adjustable; Stay in place; Sound quality.

Another iPhone accessory falls short

Jerry from Steamboat Springs, Co on 10/16/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Touted to be able control the device's volume using the bar on the cord, this accessory fails in that respect. The sound quality is adequate but the ear wraps are cumbersome. The earbuds are also uncomfortable. I'm sorry to say that these earphones are no better than the ones that Apple sells and are probably worse. And the biggest rip-off is that they're considerably more expensive. Buy at your own risk.

Crutchfield response on 10/20/2011 We have confirmed that playback and volume can be controlled by these headphones. The miniplug must be firmly inserted all the way into the iPhone headphone jack (which could be more difficult if using a case). If not fully inserted you will get sound but no control functions.

Product Research

UltraFit Series Sports Headphone: Polk Audio designed their new UltraFit Series Sport Headphones to enhance your headphone listening experience while enduring your most demanding workouts, comfortably. The Polk Audio UltraFit Series Sport Headphones are engineered for comfort, performance, and durability. You'll appreciate how they fit and stay put even through the roughest workouts. You'll also be impressed and delighted by the dynamic sound quality of the UltraFit Sport Headphones. The UltraFit 1000 even offers an in-line remote + mic, so you can control your iPod or answer your iPhone on the go.

Dynamic Balance: Co-developed with the Johns Hopkins Center for Non-Destructive testing, Dynamic Balance is a design tool that enables Polk Audio engineers to pinpoint the elements that negatively impact driver performance. These same engineers then carefully control materials, interfaces, and geometries; resulting in a headphone with great sound.

Dynamic Balance Polymer Drivers: UltraFit Sport Headphones employ dynamic drivers much like those in a Polk Audio full size speaker; they're just a lot smaller (14.2mm). To meet Polk's predetermined performance parameters, their engineers took the same care designing these drivers as Polk Audio large speaker drivers; even adding a discrete crossover filter to each driver to naturalize the high frequencies.

Ported Enclosures: UltraFit Sports Headphones are ported, since there is the port (ear piece) you put in your ear. There are also very small channels in the back of the driver enclosure, beneath the Polk logo. These are crucial to tuning the driver's frequency response peaks. And that means a better sounding pair of headphones.

Moisture Shield: The UltraFit 1000 headphones employ Moisture Shield to protect the headphones during your workout. Moisture Shield consists of a thin scrim on UltraFit 1000 driver screen. This filter material resists moisture that could get to the driver; so the headphones can keep performing through strenuous activity. Moisture Shield also provides an acoustic barrier to help smooth frequency response.

SecureFit Support: SecureFit Support is a flexible ear hook that wraps around your ear, so the earpiece stays in place. With SecureFit Support, you'll experience a snug yet comfortable fit. Now, you can put your headphones on and forget about them during your workout.

3 Pairs of StayFit Eartips: Properly fitted eartips help you to eliminate extraneous noise, experience greater bass response, and enjoy better tonal balance. Eartips that fit correctly also feel more comfortable. No two person's ears are exactly the same, so Polk includes 3 different sizes (S/M/L) of StayFit silicone eartips to ensure a secure and comfortable fit for optimum audio performance.

Ultra Flexible Tangle-Free Planar Audio Cable: Standard round headphone cables always coil up and twist; and are a constant source of annoyance, because they get in the way of your workout. Eventually repetitive twisting means the cable will break or pull out at the end. The UltraFit's planar design (with oxygen-free wire for better conductivity) completely eliminates coiling, so the headphone cables won't tangle up during a workout, or when stored away. The planar design also eliminates micro-phonics, the tendency of an electronic device to turn a mechanical vibration into "noise," which you would hear, in this case, through the headphones.

StrainGuard: Sports headphones get a lot of abuse. UltraFit Sports Headphones have been designed with this in mind. StrainGuard is a protective system that addresses the areas where sports headphones fail most often. A Kevlar core that houses the speaker wire provides extra tensile strength to prevent the wire from being pulled apart at common failure points. The other points of common failure in sports headphones are at transitional points between cable lengths and at connection points. In the UltraFit Series, all transitional connections are computer designed to strengthen the points where they fail most.

3 Cable Lengths: UltraFit Series headphones come with three cable length options, so you can wear your music device the way that works best for you. The attached 14" headphone cable lets you clip your portable music player to your shirt collar (with included shirt-clip), an included 41" headphone extension cable enables you to wear your music player on your waist or pants pocket, while the supplied 14" headphone extension cable lets you wear your iPod nano, iPod shuffle, or other MP3 players on a t-shirt sleeve.

Note: The 41" headphone extension cable is the only cable that included the in-line remote/mic.

3.5mm Connector: All UltraFit Sports Headphones employ a gold-plated 3.5mm connector that has been designed to fit through the opening on most portable audio player cases.

3-Button Remote Control + Mic: The UltraFit 1000 features a 3-button remote & microphone (located on the 41" headphone extension cable) so you can use your iPod, iPhone, or iPad on the go with in-line controls. The in-line remote lets you initiate play/pause, change tracks, adjust volume, or take a call (iPhone only) without ever touching your player. The in-line microphone supports both voice control (for iPod/iPhone/iPad) and hands-free communication (iPhone only). The UltraFit 1000 is "Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad" compatible and supports the following models and functions (as of 12/28/2011).
