Selectable impedance

Infinity's Kappa 800W 8" subwoofer features the unique Selectable Smart Impedance design, which lets you build exactly the system you want — high-power or multi-sub — without complicated wiring. Just flip the convenient impedance switch to safely choose between 2 or 4 ohms. If you're thinking about upgrading your amplifier or adding another sub down the line, this sub makes it easy to reconfigure — and it's nearly impossible to wire incorrectly.

Rugged construction

This sub handles plenty of power and sounds great in sealed or ported enclosures. Infinity's proprietary aero-cooling design helps keep the 2" voice coil cool. The acoustically damped glass-fibre cone minimizes distortion, giving you nothing but pure bass. And the steel basket provides a solid base for the sub, which handles up to 400 watts RMS. Infinity's Kappa subwoofers are known for their sound quality, and they offer the wiring versatility you need to build a system for your changing needs.

Product Research

Features
Enclosure Compatibility
Specifications

Features

Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI): A switch on the input terminal allows you to easily change the woofer's impedance between 2Ω and 4Ω settings. (The connected amplifier should be off when changing the impedance.) The power handling is the same for either setting; 400 watts RMS/1600 watts peak.

Woven Glass-Fiber Cone: The cone material is extremely stiff, minimizing cone flex; this results in very low distortion and improved clarity.

Vented Polepiece: Venting the polepiece reduces air compression under the dustcap which minimizes mechanical noise and provides more constant mechanical Q for reduced distortion.

Terminal: The spring terminals will accept bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Infinity recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.4 ft³.

Ported Box: Infinity recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.0 ft³ with one 3" diameter x 10" long port, resulting in a tuning frequency of 40 Hz. They also recommend using a sub-sonic filter.

Free-air Mounting: In addition to being compatible with sealed and ported enclosures, the woofer can be used in free-air applications. A free-air subwoofer is designed to be mounted on a baffle board, which separates the front of the speaker from the back. For instance, you could mount this woofer to a board attached to the rear deck or placed in the trunk against the rear seat. The trunk acts as the enclosure housing the subwoofer. Because there is no specific volume of air to stiffen the suspension, the free-air power handling is approximately half that of the woofer in a box, in this case 200 watts RMS.

Specifications

Thiele-Small Parameters: Because the woofer has two impedance settings, there are two sets of Thiele-Small parameters:

DC Resistance (Ω) 2.005 3.941
Inductance (mH) 1.10 0.85
Vas (liters) 12.87 12.87
Qms 4.0 4.0
Qes 0.46 0.459
Qts 0.412 0.412
Fs (Hz) 34.5 34.5
Radiating Area (m²) 0.02164 0.02164
Xmax (mm) 9.25 9.25
Motor Force Factor (TM) 10.2 14.3

Customer Q&A

3 questions already asked

Q
Can these subwoofers be used in an free air set up?
roberto  Mar 28, 2021
1 answer
A
Hey Roberto! Yes! I have mine on the rear deck of a 1998 Avalon. I braced the rear deck with steel and added sound dampening. It sounds good. But they say that the output in free-air setups comes out to about half the rated rms wattage. Sounds good, but certainly isn't what I expected from a 400 watt presence right above the back seat... Hope that helps.

Q
If I have 2 of these in a ported box, what should the ported box volume be?
frank  Jun 15, 2020
1 answer
A
For a ported box, Infinity recommends an internal volume of 1.0 ft³ with one 3" diameter x 10" long port, resulting in a tuning frequency of 40 Hz for each subwoofer

Q
I have an Alpine MRV-M500 amp. Plan to use it in the rear deck area where there is a factory cut out for an 8" sub. Will this amp be sufficient enough to power this woofer?
adrian  May 12, 2019

A
That amp is an excellent match for one of these subwoofers! You don't even have to run the amp at max to get the power needed to make this subwoofer play its best My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul
