About the Infinity REF1200S

Low-profile design

Today's compact cars offer less space for a component subwoofer, but Infinity doesn't want you to miss out on the bass you deserve. They designed the Reference Series REF1200S 12" subwoofer to fit into today's smaller enclosures without sacrificing on sound. With response that goes down to 27 Hz, you'll definitely hear the low frequencies you've been missing.

Selectable impedance

Unlike most dual-voice coil woofers which allow you to wire the two coils for different impedances, this Infinity sub features a switch which flips between 2 and 4 ohms, the most commonly used settings for a single sub. You'll be able to extract every last watt from your amplifier without compromising stability and thermal safety margins.

Reliability testing

Infinity tests every model under extreme conditions that would break lesser speakers. They freeze them, bake them, shake them, blast them with ultraviolet light and drive them at full power for days to make sure your audio investment lasts for years. Get ready for big bass in a small space.

Features

Impedance: The Reference 1200s has a Selectable Smart Impedance switch (SSI), allowing you to easily change the speaker impedance. Choose between 2Ω and 4Ω.

Sealed Box: Infinity recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.75 ft³. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle more power, and provide more accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Infinity recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.75 ft³ with one 4" diameter x 10" long port. Ported (or vented) enclosures provide better efficiency in the 40-60Hz range, and are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of sound quality at low frequencies (40Hz and below), and control. A subsonic filter is recommended when using a ported enclosure.

Free-Air: While the Reference 1200s can be mounted in free-air (infinite baffle), the power handling decreases by half.

Bandpass Box: Infinity recommends a bandpass enclosure with a sealed chamber volume of 1 ft³ and a ported chamber volume of 1.75 ft³ with one 4" diameter x 7.5" long port. Bandpass enclosures often provide the most output available from any amplifier and subwoofer combination, but at the expense of sonic accuracy.

After giving it a lot of thought and choices, Chip directed me to these subwoofers after i told him what i was doing, what i wanted out of my system and what amplifier i had to power the subs. He explained each and ever feature of the product and what to exactly look for when purchasing subs. Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

what type of box will work best and where can I find diagrams instructions and videos?

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: There are several enclosures available for the Infinity REF1200S. The "best" box depends on what you are trying to achieve. Some things to consider: Do you have 1 sub or 2? Do you want a sealed or a ported box (clean, tight bass vs. louder, "boomy")? How much space do you have in your vehicle to accommodate the exterior dimensions? You can click on the subwoofer, and then click on the Accessories tab to see the pre-made enclosures (both sealed and ported) that will accommodate the Infinity. You can also check out this article on building box if you want to go that route: http://www.crutchfield.com/learn/learningcenter/car/subwoofers/box_building.html?showAll=N If you provide information regarding your vehicle (year, make, model, premium sound vs stock, etc) to an Advisor via email or chat, the we'll be able to advise you on the space you have available for an enclosure. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
