About the Infinity REF1200S

Low-profile design

Today's compact cars offer less space for a component subwoofer, but Infinity doesn't want you to miss out on the bass you deserve. They designed the Reference Series REF1200S 12" subwoofer to fit into today's smaller enclosures without sacrificing on sound. With response that goes down to 27 Hz, you'll definitely hear the low frequencies you've been missing.

Selectable impedance

Unlike most dual-voice coil woofers which allow you to wire the two coils for different impedances, this Infinity sub features a switch which flips between 2 and 4 ohms, the most commonly used settings for a single sub. You'll be able to extract every last watt from your amplifier without compromising stability and thermal safety margins.

Reliability testing

Infinity tests every model under extreme conditions that would break lesser speakers. They freeze them, bake them, shake them, blast them with ultraviolet light and drive them at full power for days to make sure your audio investment lasts for years. Get ready for big bass in a small space.

The perfect replacement for my old subs. I've been slowly upgrading the system in one of my cars. This was the last step and it made a world of difference! They sound amazing, makes me realize that I should have spent more on the other speakers to match these. I guess I spend more money with Crutchfield!!

WOW! Loud & Low

Great Sub! I am an old school system builder and the shallow subs in my day (early to late 90's) never had the performance compared to standard subs. This sub rocks! I have an Alpine mono block amp pushing 600 watts to it (2 ohms) in a sealed box designed for a 10in sub w/ only 0.45 cu ft (I am building a new bigger sealed box to give it the room it needs) but for a shallow sub to hit this hard in 0.45 cu ft is incredible! I love the sound and cannot wait until I get it in a 0.75 cu ft box. My only complaint are the speaker terminals, they could be better. You have to use spade type connectors; I have Infinity's Kappa 6x8 in my doors and they have screw lugs for the wire termination. Its not a deal breaker, just more of a self preference.

Pros: Shallow Mount Clean Low Bass in Sealed Box Handles Allot of Power Really Well

Cons: The Spade Terminals for Speaker Wire Termination

PERFECT

I installed these in my 2005 Cadillac Escalade Ext and the do great. I have them mounted in a custom box located in front of the mid-gate and I can still use my rear seats. I was concern that they would not put out the bass since they were so shallow but I was very impressed with them. I am driving them with a 500 RMS 1 channel amp. I have the ohm switches at 4 ohms (which is an awesome selector switch on the side of the speakers). They have a very clean punch to them and I could not me more satisfied. I would highly recommend these speakers to anyone, plus the people at Crutchfield are fantastic! Thanks for suggesting these!

Pros: sound great and fits in shallow locations. Selector switch for either 2 or 4 ohms is a great feature.

Cons: makes the neighbors complain......

This is a GREAT sub when you are limited on space. I have this in a single, sealed truck box which is almost the exact air space called for. Powered by Rockford Fosgate Prime R500X1D. This has a 2" voice coil (not listed on Crutchfield website) which is really good for its size. I am taking my time to break it in slowly so I have not been putting a lot of power too it yet and it sound really good. When I turn up the amp knob for a second just to get an idea of what it will sound like, it drops! IMPRESSED!!

Pros: price, size, RMS & peak power rating is great

Cons: NONE!

Features

Impedance: The Reference 1200s has a Selectable Smart Impedance switch (SSI), allowing you to easily change the speaker impedance. Choose between 2Ω and 4Ω.

Sealed Box: Infinity recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.75 ft³. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle more power, and provide more accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Infinity recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.75 ft³ with one 4" diameter x 10" long port. Ported (or vented) enclosures provide better efficiency in the 40-60Hz range, and are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of sound quality at low frequencies (40Hz and below), and control. A subsonic filter is recommended when using a ported enclosure.

Free-Air: While the Reference 1200s can be mounted in free-air (infinite baffle), the power handling decreases by half.

Bandpass Box: Infinity recommends a bandpass enclosure with a sealed chamber volume of 1 ft³ and a ported chamber volume of 1.75 ft³ with one 4" diameter x 7.5" long port. Bandpass enclosures often provide the most output available from any amplifier and subwoofer combination, but at the expense of sonic accuracy.

what type of box will work best and where can I find diagrams instructions and videos?
[ craig  Apr 01, 2015 ]

A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: There are several enclosures available for the Infinity REF1200S. The "best" box depends on what you are trying to achieve. Some things to consider: Do you have 1 sub or 2? Do you want a sealed or a ported box (clean, tight bass vs. louder, "boomy")? How much space do you have in your vehicle to accommodate the exterior dimensions? You can click on the subwoofer, and then click on the Accessories tab to see the pre-made enclosures (both sealed and ported) that will accommodate the Infinity. You can also check out this article on building box if you want to go that route: http://www.crutchfield.com/learn/learningcenter/car/subwoofers/box_building.html?showAll=N If you provide information regarding your vehicle (year, make, model, premium sound vs stock, etc) to an Advisor via email or chat, the we'll be able to advise you on the space you have available for an enclosure. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
