About the Metra 40-VW12 Antenna Adapter
Volkswagen uses a non-standard jack on its antenna cable that won't plug into your new replacement radio. This simple in-line adapter has a standard male Motorola antenna plug on one end, and a female Volkswagen/Audi jack on the other. Just connect your Volkswagen antenna cable to the adapter, then plug it into your new radio, and you're good to go. Warranty: 60 days.
If you're adding an FM modulator to your factory stereo, a second adapter is also required. One adapter will connect to your factory stereo, while the second connects to your factory antenna cable. Your FM modulator installs inline between the two adapters.
What's in the box:
- 1 Single barrel-type VW/Audi/European antenna adapter (has a male Motorola plug on one end and a female VW/Audi/European antenna jack on the other)
I did not think this would work when I first saw the BMW antenna connector, but it fit the factory plug snugly and provides solid FM Reception on my JVC Digital Media Receiver. What makes it even better was that it was provided free by Crutchfield.

the male end of my antenna has fallen apart, to repair it, would I need this piece, or should I just try to find an entire new antenna for my '91 Escort GT?
I agree. New antenna is the best option.
