Excellent replacement for 2g Accord

Hunter from Charlotte, NC on 2/4/2012

1984 Honda Accord

I decided to give this a try for my recently-purchased 84 Accord hatchback. The radio reception was crap on FM and almost nonexistent on AM, plus the factory antenna wouldn't retract more than half way (I'm not sure if it's supposed to or not). Installation was pretty straightforward; the antenna and wire are all one piece, so you start behind the radio and thread it all the way through the lower dash, and out the roof. Highly recommend using nylon twine as a guide so you can pull the new one back through, however, I wasn't able to get the new wire through the stock route so I threaded it my own way. Fitment is not quite perfect. I had to bend the base plate quite a bit to make it seat on the roof. I was concerned about breakage or not being able to collapse the antenna afterward, but it didn't cause any problems. I also had to trim the rubber gasket; the center hole isn't spaced quite right for the Accord application. Once mounted, it looks good and works perfectly. Overall a great replacement mast. Reception is very good even without extending to full length (which is ridiculously long), and it retracts fully down into the A-pillar, which I love. Aside from the nervous fitment, can't ask for anything better. Side note: the picture shows a flat black baseplate, but the one I received was chrome. Although my stock antenna base was black, I prefer the chrome on this car, it gives it a nice classic look.

Pros: Great reception, fully collapsible, nice vintage chrome-plated look

Cons: Fitment on the roof is a little tricky, but fine once you get it.
