Needs modification for 2019 Outback

Jonathan from Middletown, CT on 7/10/2019

2019 Subaru Outback

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I'm giving these 2 stars because of poor documentation and supplied hardware that doesn't even fit. I had to remove all of the removable tabs inside and out so they would fit the rear doors on my 2019 Outback. I also had to drill out the mounting holes so the supplied bolts would fit. This made what should have been a 30 minute install take 3 hours of trial and error. Once the proper modifications were made, they worked fine. Please, Crutchfield, update your master sheet to reflect this and save novices like me the pain I had to endure.

Pros: Works fine once modified

Cons: Needed extensive modification for my application and there was no documentation on this.

Adjustments needed that were not mentioned in manual.

Stephen from Monroe, GA on 6/5/2019

2008 Toyota Yaris

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The worked well; however, I will go three stars because the installation instructions are extremely poor. I had to break off the inner tabs in order to make the speakers (Fosgate 6.75) fit. The outer tabs did not line up with the holes in the door (2008 Yaris) and I had to drill some holes and make my own adjustments. The speaker holes did not completely line up with the mounting holes in the brackets, so I again had to make some adjustments. The instructions did not mention any of this. I've done enough installs to figure it out, but it's been decades between me doing my own car as a much younger person and now doing my daughters' cars, so a better manual would have helped knocked off the dust in my experience. Also, for someone inexperienced, a detailed manual is necessary. Crutchfield's supplied instruction sheet was suprisingly unhelpful and innaccurate. I had to call their helpline, and they just checked YouTube.

Pros: It fits and works

Cons: Adjustments needed that were not covered or mentioned at all in the manual.

When fitting a 6 1/2 into this you must first break off the five tabs on the inside of the ring easy fix with wire cutters or pliers

Pros: Fits good

Cons: Have to remove the tabs inside the center of the ring before trying to drop the speaker in the adapter ring but its not hard to snap off the tabs

Worked very well and fit properly. Lost a star because the instructions did not mention for some speaker sizes the inner tabs have to be broken off, but after looking at the bracket and the speaker you notice that the tabs have score lines designed for breaking offf if needed.

Modification Needed to Fit 2005 Tacoma

Brandon from Herkimer, NY on 3/22/2019

2005 Toyota Tacoma

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I used these to install 6.5" Rockford Fosgate speakers in the rear doors of my 2005 Toyota Tacoma double cab. The tabs along the ID of the adapters needed to be removed. This wasn't a big deal, but it would have been nice if the instructions indicated this. Tabs were easy to snap off with pliers, and didn't need to be cut off. The three holes used to bolt the adapters to the doors needed to be drilled out in order to line up properly. The supplied speaker mounting screws were too long, and did not allow the adapters to sit flush against the door since they protruded beyond the back of the adapter. Also, the supplied screws were poor quality flatheads, which stripped easily when trying to use (unsuccessfully). I had to procure my own hardware, as a result. All of this was frustrating, but tolerable since they came free with the speakers I purchased. I would not actually pay money for these adapters, however. There are much higher quality options available on the market, at least for the Tacoma.

Pros: -Came free with purchased speakers

Cons: -Drilling/modification needed to fit properly -Supplied hardware was cheap & not suited for my vehicle

Used on my 2018 Toyota Tacoma. Had to clip the inner tabs off to fit my 6.5" Morels Maximos. Lined up perfectly with the mounting holes on the speakers. Also lined up perfectly with my door screw holes. They're flexible which is nice because I have them mounted over some speaker baffles. Good product.

Pros: Flexible, easy to use.

Perfect fit for my Scion xB, made the installation a breeze - they fit right into the OEM holes and installed in a minute, way simpler than trying to deal with messing with the sheet metal in the door. One piece of advice - the packaging says that these are for up to 6.5" speakers - we had to snap off the internal tabs to get a 6.75" speaker in.

Pros: made the job a snap

Verified customer (What's this?)

These are universal so they aren't a perfect fit but they got the job done. I did have the speakers screwed in incorrectly but that's due to a combination of (1) my ignorance (I've NEVER done stereo installation EVER) and (2) they came with absolutely ZERO instructions. But they're simple enough to figure out. And since I didn't purchase them - they came with the Infinity REF-6532ex I purchased - the price was right!

Pros: - Easy to figure out how to use - Fit my 2017 Lexus NX200t pretty good

Cons: - Came with ZERO instructions (be easy enough to figure out how to mount them)

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

For a 2005 Scion tC, these brackets were just too wide to not fit into the center pillar of the car. See attached picture. The bracket itself fit perfectly around the new speakers I bought to replace a blown aftermarket speaker that I installed over 10 years ago. However, because of the speaker and bracket size, and because the Scion decided to have a middle pillar that stuck out and blocked this bracket from being able to use the factory bolts, I deducted 2 stars. I wound up having to drill into the frame 2 new hole locations. The sound quality is great and the bracket attaches to speakers firmly.

I would think these can be made to fit the existing mounting location, however the instructions say to use the top hole and drill 2 additional holes for mounting to the door. Break off tabs are already included. Seems this could be made to accommodate the same mounting without requiring drilling.

Pros: Free with purchase. Fit speakers well. Slot for wire.

Cons: Still requires modifications

Great Universal Mount but poor hardware

Crutchfield customer from Monrovia, CA on 7/19/2018

2004 Toyota Corolla

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

These are universal adapters that will allow fitment of variety size round speakers and different vehicle applications. Took some time on the first speaker to know what needs to be trimmed to mount the speaker to it and what mounting tabs line up with the holes on my door. Once that was figured out transferred those adjustments to the other adapter for second door and speaker was installed within 20 minutes. My only gripe is the mounting hardware. I know this is semi-universal so the screws were extra long and they are easy enough to trim so not to cause possible wire chaffing problems inside the door. But the nuts to secure the fasteners weren't real nuts....they were stamped pieces of metal that wouldn't handle much torque at all. I work where we have plenty of 6-32 screws and nuts so just upgraded the hardware to them so I don't run into fasteners loosening up due to cheap hardware.

Pros: Great fitment, with minor trimming of various tabs my speaks fit in nicely and mounting tabs lined up to holes in the door without modifications.

Cons: Cheap hardware, nuts are stamped metal that can come loose over time. Recommend buys some 6-32 nuts to he assure nothing loosens up after install.

Did not work with my 2011 Corolla

Daniel from Malabar, FL on 7/1/2018

2011 Toyota Corolla

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Sold as working with my 2011 Toyota Corolla (6-speaker, no JBL) lower front door, but didn't work with the Kenwood 6-1/2" speakers I bought, even though these came as a bonus item with the speakers. They might work with smaller speakers, but I'm not sure. Screws, washers, and nuts were included that were too large (8-32) to fit anywhere to mount the speakers to the brackets, and they were much longer than needed, if they could have been used anywhere at all. I ended up buying 6-32 screws, washers, and lock nuts to mount my speakers to these brackets, but even with that hardware, I could not get my speakers to mount properly.

Pros: I'm not sure there are any.

Cons: Cheap construction, very cheap hardware that didn't fit, poor design.

Used these with 6 3/4 Kicker speakers into a Yaris, I had to remove all the inside tabs and one of the outside tabs on each to get them to fit properly. Also there were minimal instructions, the bolts were a bit long considering they only need to go through the bracket and a piece of sheet metal, and the lock nuts were really cheap. I ended up having to drill holes in the bracket for the speaker because I couldn't find a set of holes that lined up properly. Since some other reviewers said these rattle I made gaskets with closed cell foam and of course had no rattles. I guess they work, but also take some work.

I had some issues mounting Rockford Fosgate Prime 6 3/4" speakers to these brackets, but made it work. The diameter of the speaker's screw holes was slightly larger than the holes in the bracket, so I had to start all the screws at an inward angle and work my way around to completely tighten them, being careful not to strip the screws. Also had to cut 1/2" off the tips of the screws provided as they were catching on the edge of the metal door panel. But it worked, which is good because there's no other option available. Good luck!

Best I can say is that they are "functional", I can't say the same for the designer. Don't know who takes the measurements and draws up the specs but I think they need to find a new profession. Don't waste your time trying to make sense of it, science says there's no way these holes will ever line up. Instead grab a drill and some self-tapping screws and go for it. The final results are an adequate and functional way to securely hold your speakers. ????

Pros: Functional ......and hey it's free ??

Cons: Manufacturer lacks basic math and quality control.

Overall a good option for mounting a pair of 6.5s to a Gen II double cab Tacoma. I can't speak to other Yotas that some have mentioned problems with. I had zero problems lining up holes, both with my speakers and the truck's speaker mounting holes. The only reason I deducted a star was that I wish the bottom lip was a little wider. This would facilitate easier placement of speaker gasket tape on the backside and the Fast Rings on the front side. I made it work, but I have sticky surfaces on both sides protruding past the lip. Seems solid and strong, and I expect it to last the life of the vehicle.

Throw away the instructions and use your brain

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I used these to install some 6.75" Rockford Fosgate speakers into a 2006 Toyota RAV4 with the non-JBL system. Overall I would not install speakers in this type of vehicle without the adapters. They allowed the larger speakers to fit well work properly. The instructions that come with these are basically useless and generic. In order to fit my application, I needed to remove some tabs. Ideally the manual would have pointed me in that direction up front. Instruction manual also does not point out the wiring slot. Manual suggests mounting speaker to bracket before attaching to door, however that would not work well to access the nuts on the inner side. I mounted to door first and then mounted the speakers to the brackets. Unlike the previous reviewer, who also used these in a 2006 RAV4, I was able to mount these to the doors with the predefined holes. However there is a unique alignment. While not specified in instructions, I used a washer on both sides of the screws. The nuts provided are very weak. To mount the speakers, I found none of the provided holes were in the appropriate places. I drilled my own, which worked perfectly.

Pros: Fits larger 6.75" speakers in OEM locations.

Cons: Horrible instructions.

Getting these brackets free is the only reason I'm giving this two stars vs one. Only two of the 5 screw holes line up with line up in my second gen RAV4. I ended up drilling a new hole in each door to make it fit. I also riveted it in and with the added mats it works well at killing any rattle in my door panels at higher power settings. Also the rivets won't work themselves out over time like bolts or screws can. Added to not having access to the backside and 30 second installs, it's the way to go. Speaker to ring holes worked ok, and outside the added hole, I had no issues. However, the "easy-fit" that the sales person said about these rings was not true.

Pros: Free

Cons: Not really made for my car.

Brackets are pretty hefty, nice quality and FREE; however, I needed to cut off most of the extra tabs that interfered with installing my new 6-3/4" Kicker speakers. For example, I used a keyhole saw to remove all 5 of the tabs on the inside of the ring so that the speakers would properly drop inside the bracket. I guess the tabs are there if you're installing smaller speakers; however, if you're installing 6-1/2" + speakers, you will probably have to cut off these tabs too. I also had to cut off the 2 longer tabs on the outside of the ring as they were preventing the bracket from sitting flush against the door panel on my 2003 Corolla.

Pros: Brackets are pretty hefty, nice quality and FREE!

Cons: Didn't fit my speakers or my 2003 Corolla without first cutting off extra tabs that were interfering with my installation.

Cut screws drill holes

Lyle from Tempe, AZ on 9/23/2017

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Overall this product is a necessary evil. I used it to adapt Rockford 6-3/4 speakers. Long story short, I cut a lot of screws and drilled my own holes to make this product work. Firstly, there are tabs that need to be removed so the basket of the 6-3/4 speaker will fit into the bracket. The tabs on the inside can be popped off easily with square end pliers. I popped off the "additional" tabs on the outside of the bracket. Drilling the rivets from the car body to remove the OEM speaker was a pain. The drill will spin endlessly when the rivet pops. You will have to "tear" and pry at it to remove the back end of the rivet. I used a combination of a screw driver, good square end pliers, and a set of dykes. Mounting the bracket to the door with the supplied hardware is a joke because the supplied hardware is a joke. Buy some short 8-32 x1 machine screws and nuts. I ended up using the hardware in the box because the hardware store was closed. I cut the bolts shorter using the bolt cutter on an electrical crimp tool. Once that fiasco was completed I checked to see if the screws would interfere with the window in the down position. Mounting the speaker to the bracket, again was not straight forward. The holes to the 6-3/4 speaker are on a center radius approximately 1/4 inch wider than the cut holes in the bracket. I had to drill new holes for the speaker mounting screws. Had to cut the speaker mounting screws down as well because they hit the steel of the door.

Pros: Holes line up with car. Tabs pop off easily with pliers. No cutting necessary.

Cons: Holes did not line up with speaker. Pathetic hardware. Buy some short 8-32 machine screws and nuts to use. Had to mark and drill holes for speakers. Different mounting radius.

These brackets were the only difficulty in my installation. I would rate every other aspect of dealing with Crutchfield as fantastic. These were shipped with a set of Rockford Fosgate R165X3 speakers for the backdoors of my truck. These brackets are NOT speaker specific! Some modification may be necessary. There was nothing about THAT in the instructions. No speaker mounting hardware was included. I made a trip to a local big box hardware store to get hardware. When I tried mounting the speakers I realized they would need holes drilled because the speaker and bracket aren't really compatible. I thought I might have to saw off some tabs also. I ended up using six zip ties to mount each speaker to a bracket. Worked perfectly. I wasted a few hours and a trip to a hardware store on what I could have accomplished in 40 minutes for both doors. There's no real fault with the brackets. It IS annoying that they give the impression that you just screw your speakers into the bracket and put the bracket in your door with no additional modification or tools and they don't include hardware. Someone without a drill would have a very difficult time. Be prepared to go get hardware and have a drill or some zip ties on hand in case your choice of speaker isn't compatible.

Pros: Fit the door opening fine.

Cons: Needed modifications to fit speaker. Could have better instructions for non professional installers. No included hardware..

Fairly universal product so nothing is vehicle specific about it. I did have some difficulties mounting in the rear of my vehicle because my vehicle doesn't have a flat mounting space but I was still able to mount using this product since the plastic has some flex to it.

Pros: Great for most vehicles.

Cons: For the price it would be easier to repurpose the factory mounts if there are some.

Mark from Fairview Heights, IL on 5/11/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Installed in a 2007 Toyota Prius. They work! Put in 6 1/2'', but really 6 3/4'' speakers with them. You may have to break off pre-scoured tabs on the inner rim of the adapter. Don't be afraid to do so if you can't get the speaker to sit flush. Grab your pliers and go to town. Not sure that's mentioned explicitly in the instructions, but if you call the Crutchfield help line they'll dole that advice out right out of the gate. For other first timers, keep in mind that you'll probably have to fit these to your car door first and then screw in the speaker after the adapter is attached. May sound stupid, but I had the idea of pre-setting each speaker in the adapters to speed up installation, but then you can't actually attach the adapter to the car door with the screws since you have to place a tightening nut on the back side of the door.

Pros: - They come with screws required to install them - They do, in fact, hold speakers

Cons: - Not the best instructions, but really there's not much to figure out either. - They didn't buy me a coffee while I was installing them. I don't know -- what are you expecting here? They do the job.

Perfect fit in my 2017 Toyota Corolla, for my front door lower speakers! I have used many variations of this for different sizes, and can't recommend these products enough! It can really b e the difference of installing a speaker, or not. With out these I would not have been able to mount speakers in my front doors on my latest project. Highest recommendations.

Pros: Multiple mounting options. Allows for a "bigger speaker" vs not having this, or allows you to put a speaker back in to the factory location.

Cons: You might have to drill a mounting whole, or two, lol.

Directions were basically non- existent. Nowhere in them did it say that for larger round speakers like the 6 3/4 I got - that you need to break off the tabs on the inside of these for the speakers to sit down in. I figured it out thanks to my 40 years of working on things - but it should be in the directions. They should also come with some kind of foam/felt weatherstrip to put between them and door and speaker and this piece to eliminate rattles..

Quite useful, but needs work for '06 Rav4 install

Jack from Houston, TX on 12/26/2016

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

First: the install kit did its job and I'm glad we had it. Our install: Rockford Fosgate R1675x2 speakers in a 2006 Toyota Rav4 (no JBL), both front and rear. The fasteners supplied with the kit stink. We replaced the stamped-sheet-metal "nuts" with #8-32 Nylok nuts and the 1-1/4" screws with 3/4" #8-32 screws. In order to fit the 6-3/4" speakers we had to cut out the tabs on the inside diameter of the frames (I'm sure those are there for mounting smaller speakers). We also had to drill matching holes in the speaker flanges and the adapter frames because none of the hole patterns in the adapters matched the hole patterns in these particular speakers' flanges. Finally, we had to drill new holes in the front doors because the mounting tabs on the adapters didn't match the factory holes in any orientation. All in all, much more modification than I'd anticipated. All that negative feedback said, the adapters seem rigid, did fit the car and the speakers overall, and didn't interfere with the door interior panels when it came time to put the car back together. So I'm glad we had the kit.

Pros: Overall a good fit and eliminates work with special tools.

Cons: Still required modification to mount our particular speakers in our particular car.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I used these to install some kicker speakers in the door of my 2013 RAV4. They will work, however, they need quite a bit of modifying. I believe these Metra adapters are universal and not specific to the RAV4. I had to cut 3 of the tabs on the outside of the adapter and all of the tabs on the inside of the adapter to make them fit. I recommend using a coping saw as the cuts are rounded due to circular shape. Do not use a Dremel like I did. The high speed causes the plastic to get hot and slightly melt and it is a horrible smell of melting plastic. Either way, it does make a mess of little shards of black plastic all over. I did get them to fit after modifications.

Pros: They will work to fit speakers on car. Price is right as they are no charge with speakers ordered through Crutchfield.

Cons: Must be modified to fit. Which is extra work and not pleasant as it leaves a mess from cutting plastic.

These are good for the woofers, but they don't include anything for component tweeters. You can find some fiberboard mounts that are adaptable for different sized tweeters. I don't see why Metra can't include something like this. It's a drag to buy a kit and then have to make something so that the kit will fully work.

These brackets made possible to get those crappy blown stock speaker pods out of my life, life savers, they will appear not to sit flush with mounting location, that's normal, once you carefully bolt them down they will actually take form of the mounting location, you may have to drill holes for the new speakers into the bracket itself, no big deal just test fit before you bolt the bracket down, comes with everything you will need

Pros: Good quality, easy to install

Cons: May need to drill new holes for the new speakers

I used these to mount a 6 3/4" speaker door speaker in a Toyota Rav4. Mounting the brackets themselves to the door was very quick and easy with the included hardware. In order to get my speaker to fit into the opening though, all of the inner tabs needed to be cut off. It would be nice to have a dedicated 6 3/4" bracket. They do feel solid, sit flat on the panel, and work well after "massaging" them.

Minimal instructions included. Was a bit confused at first that my speaker would not fit into the mounting bracket, and soon realized that the inner tabs can be broken off to fit larger speakers. Included screws/bolts seem inadequate and are a pain to work with, but ended up working out. No gasket is included, but I haven't noticed any rattles

Pros: Worked.

Cons: No workable instructions included, no gasket included, included screws/nuts are a pain.

It's very minimalistic but has extra tabs to ensure fit - there is an indent on the each of the tabs so you can cleanly break off the tabs you won't use. No felt or any cushion for the contact surface to the door mounting surface but i bolted it on tight and there are no rattles so far even with subwoofer running.

Pros: Simple and customizable tabs to ensure fit

Cons: Very basic - no felt or cushion for contact area with mounting surface on the door

They really fit the bill for mounting my JBL 6 3/4 inch speakers into my 2005 Toyota. They were easy to work with, fit well and were perfect for the application. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because of the lack of directions for a novice installer such as myself. The tabs needed to be broken off on the inside of the bracket for the bigger speakers to fit and I didn't know that. Also, the out tabs needed to be broken off in order for it to fit flush and fit on the door. I also did not realize that the screws the mounted the speaker to the bracket were self tapping screws. The screws that secured the bracket to the door did not seem to have a nut that would secure it properly, but we will see. It fit perfectly and after working through the bugs, I was completely satisfied. I will keep an eye on the bracket mount to the door. So far, so good.

Pros: Sturdy quality for plastic, easy to work with, and IT FIT my application

Cons: no specific directions that may challenge a novice installer.

These things really need to come with better instructions for the beginner or first time user/installer. The speakers (6 1/2" 2-way JBL) would not fit into the bracket at first. I had to call tech support to find out that you have to break off about 6 hard tabs that on the inside of the bracket because the speakers wouldn't sit flush on the bracket at first. Once I called tech support it was a fairly easy fix.

Pros: Free, & fit right after some guidance

Cons: Better instructions

Good product, however there was a large gap between the door plastic panel and the speaker gets mounted. There were no provisions to close the gap, and the fix will be to do a mesh screen between the door panel and and the steel door assembly. I could not come up with a fix based on the manufacturer's supplied materials.

Pros: Nice multiple adapter ring.

Cons: Could not fill the void between the door and the plastic panel. I used screws not supplied with the kit.

Bolted to front door panels perfectly. Then installation of the speakers was trail and error. New holes drilled, breaking off tabs, angling screws, while attaching speaker, towards the inside of the bracket because screws are too long and impact the sheet metal on the door. After customizing, job well done.

Pros: Easy to install on door frame and free with purchase. No other deal like it!

Cons: Modifications needed but not appreciated. Hardware seems flimsy, and of course the instructions

The ring fit my car perfectly after snapping off some of the extra tabs. My speakers fit after snapping off the inside tabs. I did have to drill my own holes to mount the speaker to the ring. Also, I cut the ring mounting bolts down to make sure my window didn't hit when lowered. Might have been overkill, but I didn't want to risk it.

So they did exactly the job they were supposed to, with multiple pairs of speakers. It was not intuitive that you needed to break off some of the plastic tabs for them to fit, and some of the included screws were too long. The screws/nuts/washers really needed lock washers.

Pros: Does the job

Cons: Could use better instructions and hardware.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I installed these in the front doors of my 2012 Scion XB. I used Rockford Fosgate P165-SI components. They went in super easy to install and lined in with no issues. They had multiple screw holes so you can line the speaker up at whatever angle you want. The hardware seemed like it would be a little flimsy, but they have been holding up just fine. I have read reviews of these being complicated or not lining up. The Crutchfield master sheet is great, but honestly they're pretty straight-forward. I will be ordering another set to replace the junk adapters I have in my back doors.

Pros: Honestly, none. Completely satisfied.

Cons: Most adapters are just a 1/4" or so piece of plastic. These actually space the speaker away from the door, ensuring they clear the window and moving things inside, and that they seal against the door like they should. Get some foam tape to ensure the deal (your stock speakers should have came with foam on them.)

Perfect fit and alignment to door speaker positions. After removing stock "speakers" from 2013 RAV4, used supplied nut and bolts to mount adapters-no modification required at this point. While the instructions were very basic, it was easy to figure out to snap off the extra tabs and run the wire through the cut out - line up the holes to the door and speaker. Boom. Sealant between the adaptor and door/speaker and around wire are an idea I used. Hardware was very cheap and worked for me - I guess they would fail before cracking the adaptor - but better hex nuts would keep it from seeming so cheap.

Pros: All holes lined up and fit was good. Free was a great price!

Cons: Cheap looking hardware and as this is a 'beginner' product, better method of installation ideas would be nice.

Great Units but ready set modify !

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I needed these so that I could mount JL Audio C2-650X in the front doors of my 2005 Toyota SCION XB. The mount tabs are spot on for the screws but the supplied screws are too long and have to be cut or else they bind up against the door frame. Also the speaker to adapter screws are too long and have the same issue. I ended up getting slim self tapping plastic screws from a third party vendor to fit this adapter to mount the JL speakers. Another thing the Screws are now large enough (diameter of head) to hold in the adapter to the door speaker hole so I had to find large flat washers to custom fit it. Yes I know I had to break and bend tabs to fit the JL speakers to the adapter plate but that was very easy to do. Does this work? YES ! Do you need to spend a lot of time putting the puzzle together with parts not included YES ! Will I buy this again YES !
