Q
I am installing a single DIN receiver in a 2001 outback that currently has a double DIN sized unit. Does the new receiver fit into one of the pockets, or do I only need one pocket to take up excess space, and the receiver goes into the space where the second pocket would be, so I only need the one pocket version?

I only needed one pocket when I used this kit to replace a double DIN sized unit in a 2004 Subaru Outback. The replacement radio unit was installed in the space where the second pocket would be.

Our outback had a single DIN that I replaced with a single DIN. However single DIN equipped Outbacks come with a small "shelf" insert in the second DIN slot. So you might be able to get that plastic part from Subaru, another parts retailer or from a junk yard.
