Connecting and tuning made simple

If your car stereo doesn't have RCA outputs, you can use the speaker-level inputs to hook this amp into your system  — the amplifier switches its input mode automatically when it detects the high-level signal. The amp's got a low-pass filter that lets you quickly sharpen and focus the bass to suit your car's interior, and also includes a wired remote boost that lets you control the bass from the front seat.

Features

CEA 2006 Compliant: The Pioneer GM-D8601 mono subwoofer amplifier power ratings are measured according to the Consumer Electronics Association's CEA-2006 standards. These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA-2006 compliant amplifiers, even from different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA-2006 logo on their products and packaging. CEA-2006 Specifications:

  • Power Output:
    • 300 watts x 1 at 4Ω with <1% THD+N
    • 500 watts x 1 at 2Ω with <1% THD+N
    • 800 watts x 1 at 1Ω with <1% THD+N
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 75 dBA

1Ω Stable: The GM-D8601 is capable of powering load impedances down to 1Ω.

Auto Turn-on: When using a high voltage speaker level input, a signal sensing circuit will automatically turn the amp on and off along with the source unit.

Controls

Gain Control: The gain control is continuously variable from 200 mV to 6.5 V.

Crossover: The low pass crossover is always engaged, and is continuously variable from 40 to 240 Hz.

Bass Boost: The bass boost circuit is variable from 0 to +18 dB, centered at 50 Hz. Adjustment is made using the included wired remote.

Wired Remote: The bass boost circuit is controlled using the included wired remote, which can be mounted within easy reach of the driver. The remote has integral flanges on both sides to mount the unit under the dash. The remote measures:

  • Width: 1.73" (2.63" including mounting tabs)
  • Height: 0.75"
  • Depth: 1.62" (2.2" including control knob and cable)
Connections

Power: The power and ground connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals. Pioneer recommends different power and ground wire gauges based on the length of the wire:

  • 6-Gauge: up to 11' 10"
  • 4-Gauge: up to 21'

Remote Turn-on: The remote connection is a set screw terminal that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: There are two pair of speaker output set screw terminals, internally shorted together so it's easy to connect two subwoofers. The terminals will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. The included 3mm Allen wrench is used to tighten and loosen the terminals.

Signal Input: The amplifier features one pair of stereo RCA inputs. If no line level signal is available, use the included speaker wire to RCA adapters.

RCA Output: One pair of preamp output jacks provide a convenient way to daisy-chain an additional amplifier without running another set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle to the amplifier location. The output is not affected by the internal crossover.

Q
Does the remote control work like a level adjusment knob or simply a bass boost knob? I have a Focal amp that allows me to control the level of my subs which is great when I want them at the lowest.

In this case only the bass boost circuit is controlled with the included wired remote. For more details or to discuss further, please contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks!

I'd like to mount this under my rear deck in my 2014 malibu. Can this amp be mounted upside down?
mary  May 27, 2018

A
NO amplifier is recommended to be mounted upside down although a fan changes that. This amp doesn't have a fan but it is a class D amplifier which runs cooler than a tradition A/B amplifier and while it may not be recommended I am confident you would not have any problems with it mounted upside down.

I remember seeing something about not doing this due to the way it dissipates heat, but I cannot find it. Perhaps I was mistaken. As long as it has adequate airflow, it should be fine. I would recommend installing it temporarily by holding it with Zipties or some sort of temporary method, and then running it at a high power for a few hours with the trunk closed as normal (DO NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE). If you feel that the amp isnt getting too hot, which it will get warm during heavy use, secure it and call it done. That is what I did when I mounted mine in the custom made amp rack. I believe that the direct mount to the car's sheet metal may help dissipate the heat. Just be careful not to drill into the channel above the trunk lid where water drains from the rear window and around the back. If you do, you will have leaks, which will damage your amp.

could it works good with two Alpine SWR-1021D (10inch). ?

I believe it should.. depending on the amount of power needed for your subs.i bought this exact amp off of crutchfield along with two alpine type R 15s(750 watts RMS 2000 watt max).. crutchfield no longer carries the alpine type R 15s unfortunately..i only paired 1 of the 15s to the amp at 1 ohm seeing how the type r is a 2 ohm dual voice coil sub and this pioneer amp is 1 ohm stable. .heres the part that got tricky...the amp pushes out 800 watts rms if im not mistaken at 1 ohm..man did that sub hit!!!..not even a week goes by and the amp cuts out on me ....no smoke no burn smell..it just stopped..sent it back got a "new" amp but the same pioneer model..so i try this again.. This time the alpine took a hit and blew.now i have one of the memphis amps (from crutchfield) with the perfect 750 to 750 match from sub to amp.no problems thus far and i am STILL using the alpine type R 15

Q
I'm going to hook 4 pioneer TS-SW2002D2 subs to this amp. They are dual 2 ohm voice coil subs. I'm going to wire them at 1 ohm. My question is can I run two subs (at one ohm) to one speaker output and the other two subs on the second speaker output? This will simply make my wiring easier as I'm putting two subs towards the front and two towards the back.
matt  Mar 20, 2017
1 answer
A
As long as you wire each pair of subs together at 2-ohm, you can connect them individually to the two outputs on the Pioneer--the outputs are wired together internally in parallel so the amp will still output at a 1-ohm load in that case. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. Hope that helps!

Q
Can I hook up 2 kicker 10" 2ohm 400 watt rms to one speaker terminal for 1 ohm and get the 800 watt rms?
hot rod  Dec 20, 2016
1 answer
A
Im writing this and not re reading the specs. Make sure the amp is stable at 1ohm. If it is, you can wire the speakers to do so. Long term, not sure of the longevity of hard pushing the subs and amp will take. It always better to over power for clarity than to under power. Then you your ears to know when you are pushing to hard. Amp power over speaker power = clarity. Speaker power over amp power = distortion or boom.

Q
Is the pioneer gmd8601 max power 1600w for all impedances or is it less for a 4 ohm impedance? Too much power for kicker TCWS1043 loaded 10 inch sub?
pauly d  Oct 20, 2016
1 answer
A
When pairing an amplifier and subwoofer together, the RMS power is a better number to use in order to determine what will work best for your system. The Pioneer GM-D8601 produces 300 watts RMS x 1 at 4-ohm which is an ideal match to power the 4-ohm Kicker 40TCWS104 subwoofer, rated to handle 300 watts RMS. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I hope that helps!

Q
I bought this amp (Pioneer GM-D8601), an Alpine SWS-12D4 (dual 4-ohm voice coils) subwoofer and a sub box but it only has 2 speaker leads . I'm wondering if I need to run another set of wires into the box somehow or if there's a wiring configuration for the amp and subwoofer some how that only needs 2 wires? The manual of the subwoofer shows using a jumper across two terminals but I don't know which configuration is best given ohms, watts etc.

I'm using the an 8 ohm home amp and use a jumper wire for in series wiring between the two voice coils. I really don't know how to best wire the woofer for an auto system .

Q
Does this amp give out 500rms @ 2 channels or just 1 channel?
alfonso  Dec 25, 2015
1 answer
A
single (mono) channel, but it does provide dual speaker terminals connected parallel to each other... if you're running 2 subs with each presenting a 4 ohm load, 1 sub connected to each output will present a 2 ohm load to the amp, another option is a single sub with dual 4 ohm voice coils to present a 2 ohm load, same concept with a dual 4 ohm voice coil sub.... with this particular amp, it is 1 ohm stable, meaning you can connect 2 subs, each with a 2 ohm voice coil or a single sub with dual 2 ohm voice coil sub to present a 1 ohm load and achieve 800 watts from this amp, it is a beast for such a small frame.... the dual speaker connections just makes it easier for wiring up your systems

Q
Would 8 gauge wiring from the battery and as a ground cable be adequate for running a single 10" sub at 300 RWS and 4 OHMS using this amplifier?
brady  Jul 24, 2015
1 answer
A
It's not about the sub - it's about the amp. It has an 8 gauge lead, but I personally don't think that is enough for the length of the run. I would use 4 gauge to a block and drop down to 8 gauge for the last 18" or so. Do the same with the ground. Don't forget to install a large fuse or circuit breaker on the lead off the battery. There is a pot load of power going through that wire and you do not want to mess it up. Depending on the car, you will need to run the wire to the battery directly. This will require going through the firewall. Pick your place well! The ground, again, depending on the car, should be able to ground near the amp. If you are doing this to a Corvette, you will almost certainly have to run the ground back to the battery area. If not to the battery directly, but to the battery ground point on the frame. Obviously, this is all moot if the battery is in the trunk, or, like a modern Corvette, has a jump lead in the trunk. Hope this helps.

Can I use this paired up with the Kicker 40CWD104 in a MTX ThunderForm Unloaded Enclosure that I plan on getting for my 2004 Mustang with the Mach audio system that I plan on buying?

I am not 100% informed on the layout of the Mach 460. Knowing how some of these systems are done, meaning, they are very proprietary, you may need to get an adaptor to convert the signal. I would ask this question on a Mustang forum, or see what the Pro's here at Crutchfield have to say.

You have the check the mounting depth and cutout diameter. If the match up then yes if not keep looking

i am quite confused the wiring diagrams on here show mono amps with only two speaker terminals and this one has 4. i am asking because i have a pre built 2 sub set... do i plug the subs into the + and - farthest away from each other or the + and - next to each other..?
michael  May 02, 2015
1 answer
A
I believe the terminals are bridges internally, so it will not matter which set you wore them to. The extra terminals are simply there for convenience and adding wiring options for different series/parallel subwoofer voice coil configurations.

Is this amp CEA compliant? Also, I have two Pioneer TSW261D4 10-Inch Champion/DUAL4 OHM rated at 350w rms (700w total). I will have them wired at a 1 ohm load at the amp. Will the 800w at 1 ohm be too much for the speakers, or will keeping the gain down a bit suffice?

Q
I am considering buying this amp to upgrade my system I have one kicker l7 in a seal box is this a good amp or should I get the 2400 pioneer amp?
chris  Feb 11, 2015
2 answers
A
Chris, You have given enough specific information for me to answer your question with any specific accuracy. So I will answer this way: Subs have power ranges... max power is the most they can handle. Period. Figure half that and they will run just fine. Too much power will never hurt a sub, but not enough can seriously overheat a sub. As a sub is asked to do more, the amp cannot provide the power to do it. As this point, something called "clipping" occurs and the amp has maxed out, and the sub keeps pulling more power, causing the voice coil in the sub to overheat. Boom goes the sub, and possibly the amp. With all of that said, if you are looking at the smaller Kicker L7s, the 8601 should be a-ok. If you are looking at the larger Kicker L7s (12" or more), then I would move up to the 9601 (1200 watts). Also, use 3/4" MDF, sealed, to build the sub box. Screw the sucker together! I use 1.5" countersunk drywall screws. Use RTV to seal the seams, then pickle the box in fibreglass resin. I like adding a layer of carpet on the inside back wall to act as a dampener; it makes the bass a little warmer. Then carpet the outside so it looks nice and cuts down on resonance. I hope this helps.
andrew  Feb 11, 2015
A
Chris I have this hooked up with 2 12" kenwoods and it sounds great. But if your sub could handle the 2400 you should do it. Hope this helps.
