About the JL Audio 10W3v3-2

JL Audio Built In USA Remarkably realistic bass

JL Audio designed their W3v3 subwoofers to deliver powerful, accurate bass with a medium-power amplifier. Their extensive motor assembly research resulted in a design that ensures smooth, precise cone movement at any power level. Exclusive cooling features shunt heat away from the sub's internal motor structure for long term durability and reduced distortion. The W3v3 sub works well in a sealed or ported enclosure.

Features

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W3v3 motors remain linear in motor force over a very long range of excursion, and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is vastly reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC): The Vented Reinforcement Collar is a composite structure that addresses two issues related to reliability. By reinforcing the critical junction between the cone, voice coil and spider, the VRC greatly reduces failures due to glue breakdown or material weaknesses. It does this by greatly increasing adhesive contact area and providing stress relief to the spider material at excursion extremes. the VRC also feature slots that facilitate air flow directly onto the voice coil windings to reduce thermal compression effects and enhances reliability.

Spider/Lead Wire Assembly: The W3v3 features a unique spider, coil and terminal subassembly which is assembled prior to installation in the speaker frame for optimum alignment and glue-joint integrity. The spider is insert-molded into a composite carrier tray which also incorporates the terminal assembly and lead wire strain relief features for enhanced reliability and optimal alignment of parts. The flying lead wires are carefully controlled and strain-relieved without resorting to woven-in lead wires, which can degrade spider performance.

Elevated Frame Cooling: The elevated frame design of the W3v3 delivers high-velocity air flow through slots directly above the top plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.

Surround Stress Relief: By creating a radiused feature on the edge of the cone, stress is relieved from the surround material at maximum forward excursion, resulting in longer life and more consistent surround behavior.

Customizable Trim Ring: The woofer comes with a removable ring made of black ABS plastic which can be painted to match the installation theme and create a personalized look. You can purchase optional grille mesh inserts which are specifically designed to fit into the inner diameter of the trim ring.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box size recommended by JL Audio is 0.625 cu/ft. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 18" W x 11" H x 9" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension.)

Recommended Ported Box Volume: The ported box size recommended by JL Audio is 1.25 cu/ft. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 23" W x 12" H x 12.125" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension.) A slot port is recommended with the following dimensions:

  • Slot Width = 1.25"
  • Slot Height = 10.5"
  • Slot Length = 24.75" (a right angled port with a 11.125" extension)

Q
It's it safe to throw 600 watts at this sub or should I set it at the 500 watts?
[ Felix  Apr 17, 2019 ]

A
JL Audio subwoofers are amazing however they have a "break in period" I would keep it down to the 300 watt range for 29 hours of use and avoid long constant bass notes. After that 500 watts should be the perfect wattage for this sub. I personally would not go over 500. However, if this isn't your first rodeo you should be able to increase the power going to the sub based on sound. When you start detecting distortion back the power off a little. If you are using a JL Audio amp set your gains by the clipping light with a 50Hz tone playing.

Yeah
[ ERIC  Apr 17, 2019 ]

For the 2 ohm version I was powering it with 500 watts rms. It sounds awesome and handles the power well. Personally, I wouldn't push it beyond that though.
[ Matthew Marcus  Apr 17, 2019 ]
A
I would run it at 500watts. I've got 2 on 1200watts but only running 1000watts. 3/4 volume at 1200 watts you can smell the coils starting to get hot. They can handle it just not worth burning them up.

Q
I have this sub in a JL stealthbox for ridgeline. I am powering it with alpine pdx-v9... what should my filters for sub sonic and lp freq. be set at for this sub?
[ Tony1K  Sep 15, 2017 ]
2 answers
A
Sub sonic filter should be set at now lower than 20hz. Your low pass filter is a matter of preference not to excede 150hz. personally I prefer mine to be set around 80hz.

Q
I have a jl audio slash 500/1 amp and am wondering what 10" subs to go with 2ohm or 4ohm? Thanks dan
[ Dan  Jul 17, 2014 ]

A
I have a JL XD700/5 with a JL Audio 10W3v3-2 sub in a small enclosure. Going 2 ohm gets you more drive with less power. Excellent high quality sound. Would recommend.
[ Peter  Jul 21, 2014 ]
A
i would get a dual voice coil sub. this w3 sounds good but cant handle a lot of power. I have blown one already, received the second one and had to turn my amp down below half so I don't blow this one.
[ CORY  Jul 21, 2014 ]
A
I have the same amp running a 2 ohm 10" W3 and it sounds awesome.
[ James  Jul 19, 2014 ]
A
That amp puts out 500 watts over a 1.5 to 4 ohm range. So either a 2 or 4ohm sub will work fine. If you plan to add another sub later, I would go with a 4ohm, because you can wire them in parrallel for a 2ohm load. Hope this helps!
[ JAMES  Jul 19, 2014 ]
A
I always go with the lowest impedance that the amp can handle safely becaus it will produce more power. If you're running a single sub I would therefore get the 2 ohm. If you are running 2 subs you could get 4 ohm subs wired in series to produce an end result of 2 ohms. Or if your amp is stable at 1 ohm then I would get 2-2 ohm subs wired in series to produce an end result of 1 ohm.

I'm really impressed with my 2ohm 10" w3. Fills the car with more than enough bass and it's in a custom sealed box.
[ ADAM  Jul 19, 2014 ]
A
I have had three two ohm JL W3's (2 10" and 1 12") and have had great luck with them. I use alpine mono amps with about the same wattage yours has and they push the subs very well. Good luck!
[ KEITH C  Jul 19, 2014 ]

Q
is the .625 cu.ft sealed box including the woofer installed dimension?
[ richard  Jan 21, 2014 ]
2 answers
A
Yes. If you are building your own enclosure you will want to build a box where the interior dimensions equal the .625 cu. ft. then cut a hole and put in the speaker.
