About the JL Audio C1-650

Starter component speakers like no other

After an extensive tour of JL Audio HQ, I got the opportunity to talk to their engineering and development team about the current JL Audio lineup and upcoming projects. Given all the work they're doing with premium car audio, I was surprised by how excited they were for customers to hear their workhorse C1 Series — speakers designed for drivers simply looking for a sensible factory speaker replacement, not necessarily an audiophile-grade solution. The reason for that excitement, once I heard it, made perfect sense — every JL Audio speaker must uphold the quality and sound associated with the name. You may be looking for something that's just listenable, but what you'll get with the C1 Series is an audio experience that puts it at the top of its class. And then, just maybe, you'll end up being a JL Audio fan for life.

C1-650

The C1's compact crossover networks make them an easier fit during installation.

What sets C1 apart?

JL Audio designed this C1 Series C1-650 6-1/2" component speaker system to be the very best it could be for the price. You'll find solid construction and finish, along with some eye-popping flair in its striking yellow mineral-filled polypropylene woofer. That woofer delivers impactful lows and is specially designed for a natural roll-off transition to the highs handled by the tweeter. And it's the separate aluminum edge-driven tweeter that gives the C1 Series its distinctive sound, setting it apart from other speakers in its class. You'll hear crisp detail in the high frequencies, incredible imaging, and minimal distortion no matter how you power them. Included crossover networks ensure that the right speakers receive the right frequencies.

Why no grilles?

Most folks have no use for aftermarket grilles, opting to use their factory grilles for a streamlined look. With that in mind, JL Audio doesn't include grilles with the C1 Series, opting instead to incorporate those savings into building an all-round better speaker.

Chose these speakers because they sound good and require little power to do so. They are paired with a Kenwood receiver and amp and perform beautifully. They installed in the factory bracket in my 2000 Toyota 4runner (lower front doors), the tweeters went right on the factory bracket on the door column. Some have said these tweeters are too bright but I adjusted for that with my amp and they sound great. I'm not a basshead but bass is strong imo, midrange is very good.

Pros: great value, sound great, easy install

Cons: non

Great speaker package at a Great price.

Just finished the install to my '06 Silverado front doors and I'm very happy with the kit and the sound. I may have done it a bit differently then most people but the parts work perfectly on my install. I centered the GM adapters in the stock opening and drilled holes to mount it then installed the Speakers. I removed the stock tweeter and took it apart keeping the plate section. The new tweeters were then surface mounted to the plate and reinstalled. I drilled new holes to mount the tweeter base to the plate as the stock holes did not line up enough for me. All the wires plugged in so no extra work was needed. All I did was add some wire looming to avoid any rub through and future shorts. The Crossovers were attached to the inside of the door panels with a very high strength adhesive pad used to hold motel room TV's in place. For the price? The speakers are everything I was told they would be for my HU and am very pleased with a quality sound I now have.

Pros: Everything needed comes with the speakers at a great price.

Cons: I have not found a single Con for my application.

These speakers are great! Sound is excellent for the price and it has all the JL quality that comes with the name. The cross over component is very small compared to other set ups so it makes it very easy to find a home for it behind the dash.

Pros: Great speakers for the price. Clear and crisp sounds. Small cross over makes for easy install.

Cons: Still trying to get used to the yellow cone that sticks out. Not a big issue.

Upgraded factory speakers

I was looking to clean up the sound in my 10 year old Civic, after purchasing a new touch screen stereo from Crutchfield. I listen to a lot of Jazz, and the stock speakers couldn't handle a good standup bass riff. I also didn't want to loose my mind, or contents of my bank account, to install speakers in a car. Athena steered me towards these components for the front doors, and their brother C1-650x two-way speakers in the rear deck. Just what I wanted; and didn't deplete my savings. No more bass distortion, and the percussion is crisp and clear. Driving is a joy again.

Not impressed at all. Tweeters are a little harsh, and completely overpower the woofers. The woofers cannot handle much bass without distorting and sound muddy at higher volumes. The specs are also not correct. They are actually 50 watts RMS (specs from the box.) Already arranged to return them. Crutchfield made the return very easy.

Fits 2018 Sprinter perfectly

Crutchfield customer from Bozeman, MT on 11/7/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Installed these using an adapter plate and they fit perfectly into the stock door locations on my Sprinter crew. The tweeters fit like a glove and dropped right into the standard pockets in the dash without any modification. Sound quality is much improved over stock, but because the woofers are located so low on the Sprinter doors, the highs definitely predominate. I added a sub and speakers on the back doors to balance out the soundstage. If I could change one thing it would be for the crossovers to be adjustable so that you could tune the setup a bit to dial in for your listening preferences, but overall I'm very happy with the purchase and the upgrade. As always, Crutchfield was great and the install with the new head unit was plug and play.

Pros: Good bass, easy install.

Cons: Non-adjustable crossovers prevent tonal tuning of tweeters.

To start with they are an amazing upgrade from factory speakers. I have a 2014 Jeep Patriot Latitude and Crutchfield car idenfer said they wouldn't fit my front door, well that is incorrect just mount them to the 6x9 adapter and put those baby's in. Oh and use the cut off screws that come with the speakers to mount them to the adapter plate.

Big Difference from the stock Alpine / Kicker

John from Orange, CT on 10/8/2018

2011 Jeep Wrangler

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I used these to replace some Kickers / Chrysler Speakers in my JK and the kickers had a much bigger magnet so I was QUITE concerned I just dumped 3 time the cash on something that wouldn't measure up. But honestly they do a much better job and the tweeters & crossovers work very well. It just takes some getting used to as the stock Tombstone tweeters weren't the best even after the capacitor mod. *BUT Word to the wise* These tweeters don not work with the tombstone style tweeters I actually had to silicone them in place.

Pros: Quality and nice separation

Cons: The tweeters do not fit properly in ALL JK Applications.

Installed in my 2001 Silverado ext. cab running off an Alpine iLX207. I sound deadened the entire cab and running these with Alpine SPS-410's in the rear doors and a JL 10TW3 driven by an M500. I have the C1's crossed over at 80 hz from the head unit, they sound nice with the rest of the setup. Since the 207 is 18 watts rms the C1's fit the bill if I had the money I would have went with C2's and a 4 Ch amp because they do sound better but need to be driven properly. Only 4 stars because if I used these to replace factory speakers on a factory headunit the lack of a good crossover would be disappointing.

Pros: Works well with aftermarket head unit.

Cons: Lack of crossover.

EXCELLENT SPEAKERS FOR THE PRICE. If this is your price range, don't even hesitate!!! I'm curious how a set of components could possibly be better. I might have to buy another pair of more expensive JL component speakers in the future to see how a set could possibly sound better. The woofers are more than powerful enough and the tweeters are incredibly soft and easy on the ears. Very clear and precise sound. These do get distorted at extremely high volumes but that is because they are only 50 watts. These are also incredibly easy to install, considering I was able to install them myself.,

Pros: Strong, clear subs Outstanding price Easy Install Soft, Precise tweeters that don't give you a headache at high volumes

Cons: Only 50 Watts RMS

These work very well as an upgrade to factory speakers, especially in combination with an aftermarket head unit or small 4 way amp. I would not recommend adding an amp to these unless you also have a subwoofer of some sort.

Pros: Comes with adapter to make installing in different applications easy. Clear sound at volume, price point

Cons: There yellow, no way to opt for the larger version of the C1 tweeter

Clear sound, but highs varry a lot

Joshua from Pike Road, AL on 5/3/2018

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I installed these JL Audio C1-650 door speakers in my front and rear doors and also the front pillar speakers in my 2007 Chevy Tahoe, which had Bose factory system. I paid more for these speakers compared to other brands, expecting higher quality sound. They are not as loud in the mid to low frequency as I hoped, and the high frequency varries from really loud piercing to soft depending on the song... simply too much varriance for me. However, I might just need to bypass the Bose factory Amp, or install an amp and run the speakers directly to it to avoid any volume throttling and adjusting that the factory amp might impose on the system. Over all, they sound good, just not as good as I was expecting.

Pros: Sounds clear and better than my factory Bose Speakers.

Cons: High frequencies varry from High pitch piercing sound to noticably soft.

Installed this for the first time in a toyota corolla 2015. It's Awesome!! Sounds so much better than the stock system!! Wow. I installed this system myself. It took me a few hours because I didn't do it before. I learned on the go. It wasn't as hard as I thought but I made sure to take my time with each step and make sure I knew what I was going to do before I did it. The tweeter fit in the hole where the twetter sits right now buuttt, it's a little hard in from the back, so I just cut out the old grill and slid it in and it is flush with the top. Looks amazing! I used strong hot glue in the back of it to keep it form moving or sliding out. It is a tide fit but from vibrations it might pop out over a few months. The bottom woofers fit with everything recommended at the time or purchase. It came with all the necessary installation hardware. The instructions were SPOT ON!! I did call technical support to clarify one issue with the wiring diagram and notes but I was just doing my due diligence. The instructions make sense and for my specific car there is a youtube video with further demonstrations and instructions in HD so that helped as well but everything was defenitely in the instructions. If the door panel electrical is hard to remove, you should note that it's removable from the outside. It's on with clips. I had an issue that the plastic clip keeping it together was broken so I couldn't squeeze it to pull it out. I removed the arm cushion and it slides out.

Pros: Love the system! Sounds better than stock. Fits wit brackets. Toyota made it a little hard but crutchfield has you covered. Spent 1 hour just with the doors closed listening to music. Taking it in.

Cons: In the instructions they could show how to remove the arm cushion but that's not a big deal it's kinda obvious if you take a look inside. Can't really hate on it.

Strong bass response and simple installation

I used these speakers to replace the OEM speakers in my Toyota Corolla 2016 S Plus. The speakers fit wonderfully and did not interfere with any internal components. Along with the installation gear, it was basically a simple plug and play. I did have to do a small amount of modification to mount and wire the tweeter. The OEM speaker wires the tweeter in parallel with the woofer. I cut the wires on the tweeter harness, and used butt connectors to wire them together. I also used hot glue to mount the tweeter in the OEM location.

Pros: Great sound, loud highs, deep bass.

Cons: Slight modification to mount the tweeter in my vehicle.

I have always been a fan of JL, but I was leaning more toward the c2s originally. I took a chance to save myself a little cash and my only regret is not getting them sooner. These are a huge upgrade and will even handle a decent entry level amp. Definitely worth the price and provably the best bang for your buck.

Don't waste your money. I don't know what the other people on here are use to listening to but if your like me and you have owned JL products in the past and are expecting the same grate sound then your going to be let down. I currently have the C2 in my Scion XB and purchased these C1's for my jeep, didn't want to spend the extra coin if they could possibly be exposed to the elements. Difference from the C1 to the C2.... well quality, my C2's sound rich and full, the crossover works well in that in filters out what shouldn't get to the tweet and leave what should. I can't say the same for the C1's tiny hollow sound, very lack luster response from the tweet, and over all poor performance. After stuffing the sound bar with poly fill and adding gaskets to the sound bar, I installed the first component and tweet I instantly noticed that the right hand factory infinity sounded way better. I have since removed the installed speaker and tweet put tape over the hole in the sound bar that I cut, disposed of the evil things that I can't believe JL put there name on and I'll be waiting for some C2's to come in. If your just looking for a replacement then let me say that the kicker and the JBL's sound way better! If my first JL system hadn't turned me into such a fan boy I would be going that route myself.

I bought these speakers a month ago, so i already know this product well. I currently new to car audio , so i was looking for my first component speakers. To start out, i was impressed when started to hear these new speakers compared to my stock ones. In comparison these speakers will give you some good mid bass kick clarity from the tweeters. So If your a person like me who is going to upgrade thier stock speakers, Do it!! You'll be amazed.

Pros: Good mid bass kick Crisp clear highs Great Budget speakers (Bang for your money)

Cons: None!

I don't have much to say. These are awesome replacements for my Genesis coupe speakers. Old ones were starting to make odd noise when the bass hits. So I was looking in getting something that sounded really good with the base amp, and to what is available for the car. Sounds cleaner, more crisp, and more bass, to what the car came from the Factory. Crutchfield provides instructions for you car, and adapters so you have have to do any modifications or wire cutting. No charge! Purchased with C1-650x for the Rears

Pros: Cleaner More crisp Bass

Cons: None

JL audio lives up to it's reputation and then some!!! I bought a Kenwood Excelron 501 from Crutchfield when I was in Harrisonburg. Installed it in about 25 minutes and have loved the Tuner/CD/,Bluetooth, etc features ever since. Now that I have installed the JL C1 650`s I Really love the tuner! For a 2 way component set they are awesome. Their clarity, presences, and balance are the best I have heard!!!

Pros: Cake walk to install. They ROCK!!!

Great Imaging, Crisp and Clear!

Dan from Reynoldsburg, OH on 6/18/2017

2008 Honda Civic LX

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Short version: Crisp and clear component set - major upgrade from stock speakers. Sounds fantastic even without an external amp. Local car audio guys told me that these are the best they've heard for this entry level class price point. Details: Installed in my 08 Civic LX in stock locations and they sound fantastic with my Sony Xplod head unit (pretty old, but still works well - 52wx4). I am a fan of crisp highs and solid mids and these deliver. The upgraded imaging in my car is what has me impressed the most. It actually feels like I can pick out the instruments and vocals and their locations in front of me. I did notice a significant reduction in lows/bass from the stock 6.5" speakers. These are component speakers, so that is to be expected. I'll add a sub to do it justice. These are about twice as loud as the stock speakers. The "crossover" to the tweeter seems to be more of just a high-pass filter as you connect it in parallel directly from the woofer, so more entry-level, but still sounds great. There was enough wire on the crossover to do the whole job without adding any cable. I believe this is still a 4 ohm set, even though the woofer/tweeter is in parallel. I used the mounting bracket for the woofer that Crutchfield provided as the universal one in the kit was thinner. I installed the tweeters in the stock location at the windshield and it sounds great. Would buy again. No reviews on the net yet - for lots of details, see review in photos. I

Pros: High quality tweeters Nice full, clear sound (mids and highs) Inexpensive for the sound quality that you get Quality construction

Cons: Universal mounting bracket included in the JL Audio box is fairly thin. It may have been fine, but Crutchfield included a mounting bracket with the free gear that was a perfect fit for my car.

Features

Woofers: Each JL Audio C1 woofer features a mineral-filled, injection-molded polypropylene cone with a rubber surround.

Size Classification Note: These speakers are marketed as 6½"; the woofers will fit in standard 6½" speaker openings, but do not use the standard 6½" speaker bolt pattern. In order to install them in standard 6½" speaker openings you must drill new screw holes. If new holes are drilled in the mounting surface of the car, no bracket is needed. If drilling in the car is not an option, the included brackets can be used, which have standard 6½" mounting holes, the Ford non-symmetric four hole pattern, and non-standard 6¾" three and four hole patterns. Please enter your vehicle information to confirm fit.

Power Handling: JL Audio publishes several power specifications for this speaker system, 50 watts continuous power handling (RMS), 225 watts peak music power, and 10-75 watts recommended amplifier power (RMS). We've listed the conservative combination of 10-50 watts RMS in the specs table.

Tweeters: The ¾" edge-driven, aluminum dome tweeters are damped by a silk surround suspension. Flush and surface tweeter mounting brackets are included.

Tweeter Dimensions:

Frame Diameter Cutout Diameter Mounting Height Mounting Depth
Flush Mount 1.675" 1.448" 0.248" 0.863"
Surface Mount 1.712" Screw Holes Only 0.748" 0.508" (Screw Depth)

Tweeter Crossovers: The in-line tweeter crossovers are 2nd order (12 dB/octave slope) and the 31" input and 14" output wires are attached. The input wires are terminated with female quick slides that plug into terminals on the woofers and the output wires are terminated with male quick slides that plug into the terminals on the wires attached to the tweeters. The woofer is unfiltered, using its engineered roll-off characteristics to blend with the tweeter. The electronic tweeter protection circuit is designed to minimize the possibility of tweeter failure. It monitors current going to the tweeter and will disconnect the tweeter from the signal when it senses overload. Once the volume has been reduced, the protection circuit will reset itself automatically.

I have a 05 Gmc with a Sony XAV-AX1000 headunit. Do you need an external amp to power these? Or will the one I got power it good enough?

A
I would check the RMS wattage output of your head unit (this would be listed in the specifications) and compare it to the 10-50 RMS wattage range of this set up.
[ Cameron  Jul 16, 2019 ]
A
I powered mine thru the factory head unit of my 2011 Jeep Wrangler and it worked fine. An amp would help on the low end but these tweeters have good high end without amplification.
[ Adrian L.  Jul 16, 2019 ]
A
Honestly i don't remember the power rating on them. I was going external amp all the way. I would imagine that a deck with increased power would be fine though. Sorry I'm not more help than that.

You won't need an amp to power them but it would help get more sound out of it for sure.

I didn't use these speakers on a civic. I don't know if you have space to install all the wires that come with the tweeters but would try that route. You might need to check the wiring harness from the radio and splice in from there. Good luck
