About the Sony MEX-GS820BT

Power to rock your ride

Aftermarket car stereos typically provide a lot more power to your speakers than factory radios — I've heard the difference. But Sony's MEX-GS820BT takes that to the extreme with its powerful Class-D amplifier. Boasting 45 watts of continuous output per channel, it'll take your system to a level once reserved for external power amps. You can tweak that output with an impressive array of sound-shaping tools, including a 10-band EQ, time alignment, and comprehensive frequency filters.

Powerful smartphone integration

This Sony works hand in glove with your smartphone. You'll enjoy voice control though your Android™, or you can communicate with Siri when you use your iPhone®. Plug in your phone to either the front or rear USB inputs to access your stored music files. Enjoy your carefully curated streaming content by accessing Pandora® from the receiver's controls.

Sony MEX-GS820BT

Use Bluetooth to pair two phones at once.

Bluetooth® for hands-free calls and more

Bluetooth offers convenience when you're behind the wheel, with hands-free calling and wireless audio streaming from your mobile device. The MEX-GS820BT connects to two devices at the same time — great if you have work and personal mobile accounts. Pairing is easy with Sony's Simple Secure Pairing system, and even easier if your phone supports Near Field Communications (NFC) technology — just touch your device to the receiver and you're set.

A wealth of playback options

This Sony delivers great sound from your CDs, and plays a variety of file formats via the front and rear USB inputs. Sony's Quick-BrowZer search tool makes finding the right playlist, album, artist, or song an easy task.

And you can reach for the stars by adding a SiriusXM satellite radio tuner (not included, requires subscription). Satellite radio offers an unparalleled variety of music, news, sports, and talk, plus your favorite channels will stay with you wherever you drive.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

This Sony has the ability to retain the steering wheel controls in many Japanese vehicles, but we recommend using a separate SWC adapter. In all other vehicles, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Installation Note: We recommend running a dedicated constant power wire to the battery for optimal performance from this Sony's amp — we offer an inexpensive wiring kit for this installation. This Sony's high-powered amp won't work in systems where an outboard factory amplifier is still active.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

    Awesome sound quality

Glenn from Aiea, HI on 7/5/2019

    2004 Toyota Sienna

    Verified customer (What's this?)
    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

After 16 years, the factory HU in my 2004 Sienna, was becoming possessed. Spitting out CDs at random times, stations mysteriously changing. Anyway, it was time to replace. Bought this Sony due to the power and when you hit the extra bass button, you feel it! With the Extra Bass off, it's basically your ordinary average unit, but hit that button, you really feel the bass! Hit it again to Extra Bass 2, then it pounds as much as your speakers allow. Great as far as sounds go, which for me is the main thing. Few quibbles, hard to adjust without the app. When you do use the app, it's great though. Hard for an old guy like me to get used to using an app to equalize the sound, but after a while, it becomes second nature. Have not had the chance to use the aux, or USB for music, but I suspect it's fine. I like the sound quality of a good CD still, so my next thing will be to rip them to FLAC or the apple equivalent. Bluetooth is handy and convenient. Also has a 3 year warranty, I think only the Sony GS units come with that . All in all, it's been pretty awesome.

Pros: Good power when Extra Bass pressed. Sony app easy to use. 3 year warranty.

Cons: Interface on the unit not very intuitive.

Perfect for a Wrangler with sparse extra space for amps

I purchased this receiver to install in my Wrangler. I needed something that was loud enough to counteract all the noise from Jeep life and this thing delivers! With no doors or top on the interstate I can hear spoken words clearly and music like I'm in an enclosed space. I like that it has a long USB connector that I can place between my seats for easy charging and use. Installation was easy with included instructions. Crutchfield provided all of the wiring harnesses and install bracket which was great. I had this receiver in and ready to go in less than an hour. It does everything I need it to do and I would recommend it for any Wrangler owner.

    Nice Radio

I have always thought Sony Corporation had very good products and I find this radio is no exception. It has a much better sound than the factory radio that it replaced.

Pros: Excellent sound, clean and crisp highs and tight bass.

Cons: The instructions book should be read first before setting up the radio to your likings. This radio is software defined. It's fairly easy if you understand what the book is telling you.

Has plenty of features and extra options that are nice. You really have to read the owners manual to figure out how to use the unit. The control descriptions printed on the unit are not very user friendly. Easy to install and sounds great. Hands free phone option works great and the clarity of the conversation on both ends is superior.

    Pros: Hands free, installation, sound

Cons: controls are not very user friendly

Controls are tiny but sound is big. Very pleased with audio output but would prefer to have intuitive controls. The 2 USB outputs are nice, I was surprised at the quality of sound from a USB drive. I recommend this product.

Pros: Good sound output, multiple input options. Excellent volume knob.

Cons: TINY buttons with obscure labels; non-intuitive interface; I don't care for the constantly changing color scheme.

    Love the POWER!

    Verified customer (What's this?)
    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Really like it so far. Little confusing with all of the controls and settings but important ones are quick to learn. love the POWER!! sounds crisp and clear. 45 watt RMS is obvious upgrade from lesser units. Lights are fun, but I'm not that interested in the flashy as much as the quality. Only in for 1 week but I can feel and see that this is a quality, well built unit. Lesser units have spongy knobs and sloppy buttons, but this display feels solid.

Pros: Well built face plate/display 45watt RMS Bright, Dimmable Adjustable color to match dash App / iPhone controlled

Cons: For the average Joe, too many adjustments/menus. A Pro would have a hay day! Instructions have little or no descriptions or explanations on what the adjustments do

Installation and performance I'm very pleased with. Nice, clean sound. Looking forward to adding a small sub-woofer to pump up the bottom a bit. Didn't give it 5 stars because the operating instructions/initial set up were quite confusing for me. Still not sure I know how to operate the unit. I'm sure I'll figure it out over time.

Same issue as many buyers, output error. It really sorta depends on the bass I'm thinking but oddly certain low bass notes play awesome and then barely mid bass will output error it and you have to pull over and turn the vehicle off to restart. It's a pain in the butt. Thinking of trying to depin the powers and add a thicker gauge wire.

Pros: Good sound and power when it doesn't error on you.

    Cons: Output error galore

2005 jeep wrangler wired to batt w/ JL C2 5 1/4 speakers in dash and bar. This deck and speaker combo are head and shoulders above kickers and standard aftermarket deck. Mega Bass is nice...but i still need a sub to fill out the overall quality. Highly reccomend this deck. Wiring and fittment was a breeze with crutchfields imcluded harness and faceplate.

Pros: Comapct power. Easy to learn interface. Auto connect BT

Cons: Gotta run power from the batt if you dont have 15amp fuse for your deck.

This deck rocks. Simple yet sophisticated. Enormous sound improvement before EQing. Great features, and a very broad variety of sound shaping options. If you get this deck, you'll love it.

Pros: Features and sound quality. Looks, simplicity.

Cons: Couldnt hook up my steering wheel controls or my cars microphone to it. The connector for my steering wheel that they gave me, is not the right plug for the deck. But, it does include it's own external mic that I hooked up and ran in place. So, lose win. No big deal to me really.

Easy install when inluding wire harness in purchase. (5 stars for this part!) Sound & power is very good. Running to a pair 6 1/2. & 5 1/4 direct to head. Speakers take 300 watts per pair so 0 distortion when max volume and room for amp if wanted. Running amped 10" sub separately. Only down side is setting up so many options & the directions are skimppy. Setting of defaults for lights, audio, auxiliary inputs, etc, etc, etc was the only frustrating part. Good purchase!

Pros: Ease of install & performance. More options than you need.

Cons: Inputting settings for all functions and sound.

I reviewed several of the different head unit options for my 1987 Porsche 911. Based on many of the other reviews that I read, I chose the Sony and I sure am glad that I did. The blue tooth connectivity works great with no issues at this point in time. The power to each of the speakers is wonderful and really helps to drive the low end sound. The menu and all of the selections are complex, but once you figure it out, no issues and the amount of adjustment is wonderful related to the sound. The ability to adjust the color scheme also makes it wonderful. You get the exact look that you want. I highly recommend this Sony MEX-GS820BT.

Does the job. Decent power. Instructions for setup could be a bit more clear about what happens when you put in a thumb drive with a few thousand songs on it. It has to read them all before it plays them and this takes a while. Even the text from Crutchfield, on whom I depend very much for knowledge, did not know about this.

Great power and sound quality. I installed this in a friends truck with two sets of Infinity reference ix 6 1/2 speakers and it sounds awesome. Doesn't distort even at max volume. I think I'm going to buy this unit and replace my Pioneer with it. Many tuning features also.

Pros: Power, Tuning ability and clarity.

Cons: Have to run a dedicated 12 gauge power wire to the battery because of the powerful class D amp it has but it's easy. Just cut and splice the yellow wire that says "12 volt" on the harness that comes with the unit with a 12 gauge wiring kit that Crutchfield supplies as an option to the battery. It comes with an inline fuse you put close to the battery also.

Awesome stereo and awesome Crutchfield service! I bought this stereo because I wanted ample power to drive 4 speakers and not use a sub. I got what I wanted. The receiver fit well in my 1992 Miata. The kit that Crutchfield supplied as well as the directions worked well. I had a problem where the stereo would not turn off after the car was turned off. A tech rep at Crutchfield, Mr. Dempsey, worked with me on the phone for over an hour as we went through a bunch of trouble-shooting steps and reached the conclusion that the issue is with the receiver. Mr. Dempsey was both polite and very patient. He then provided very accurate steps as what to do next if I wanted to send back the stereo for a replacement. I sent the stereo back and had a new replacement within 3 days. The new replacement works like a champ. More than enough power for 4 speakers with loads of bass. Enough base to keep my 20 year old rap nut son happy. The bluetooth was easy to use and works quite well. The unit has 2 extra bass buttons on it. These are cooI and can easily improve or remove bass to your liking, by just pushing a button. I paired the high powered Sony stereo with a pair of 6.5" JL Audio C2-570X in the door and fit 5" X 7" MTX Thunders in the rear deck. Well worth the money, time, and effort. I also have to say it was excellent customer service and product support by Crutchfield. Very good advice also. I am a very satisfied customer.

Pros: Good bluetooth, good bass, very good sound clarity, tons of features, can tweek the display so many ways. display is easy to see in the daylight with car top down

    Cons: none

I replaced my Alpine hd149bt with the Sony Mex-gs820bt. Right out of the box without any adjustments, the sound quality is many times better and the Bluetooth doesn't dropout randomly like the Alpine did. 45 watts per Channel is very satisfying. No need for external amps with this kind of power. I added a powered subwoofer (8"bazooka) which really completes the soundstage. The unit is powering 4 Kenwood 2way speakers, 5-1/4" up front and 6-1/2" in the back. These are by no means special speakers but this unit really brought them to life. I've always had a problem adjusting the front speakers because they are positioned low on my doors. In the sound setup menu there is an attribute called DSO (dynamic stage organizer) which increased the front ambience a lot. If there is a downside, for me it would be the front auxiliary input. I use an older style Sirius tuner which requires a stereo mini input, unfortunately there is no rear aux so I have a wire protruding from the front face input. Not the end of the world but it would be a cleaner look if the input we're on the back side. All in all I am a lot happier with the Sony then I ever was with the Alpine. I highly recommend it.

    Pros: Powerful customizable sound

    Cons: No rear aux input

I purchased this unit to replace an Alpine head unit whose Bluetooth capability gave up the ghost. This unit is SO versatile! More adjustments than I will ever need but nice to know they're there if I want them. It does make it a more complex unit to use. This stereo had hands down the best internal amp of any car stereo I've ever had. It handily powers my front (Morel components) and rear (Morel coaxials) speakers. The 6 preouts is great and allowed me to repurpose my amp to power a sub. I highly recommend this head unit.

Pros: High power internal amp Highly adjustable lights to match almost any interior lighting...or whatever else you might want.

Cons: Learning to navigate through the functions is cumbersome.

I have this radio's smaller sibling, the MEX-gs620bt in one of my cars, and I really love that radio. I wanted something similar for my other car. The 820 went on sale, so I bought it. The main difference is the 820 has a built-in powerful amplifier, eliminating the need for an external amp. I love the stereo-sounds great, plays FLAC files from a USB drive, and has bluetooth that allows hands free calling. If I had another car, I will gladly buy another 820.

Great head unit. Replaced an older Alpine that I had. Phenomenal features with it including two USB ports and was easy install overall. Great options to adjust and customize your sound and sounds great when installed. My favorite feature though is the bluetooth connectivity. Automatically looks to sync to my iPhone every time I get in the car and can use play, pause, skip, go back with the remote and not having to click through my iPhone for an adjustment. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for an upgrade.

A great achievement from Sony. I never was a Sony fan until they came out with the gs820bt and the previous xb100bt 100watts per channel 42+ rms per an online video where a guy did an amp dyno test. The power amp is very capable of high out put without breaking down while powering 4 speakers in my 2002 Silverado 1500. Not much audible amp breakup (much better than pioneer and had used them exclusively for 30 plus years). Now has a rear sub. Easier install than the Sony Mex xb100bt which is longer by a 1/2 inch believe. When installing the xb100 in my Nissan titan I had to cut into a support under the dash to get Bottom line. I have a regular cab truck and I didn't have the room and didn't want to give up any room either. The gs820 gave me what wanted in a single DIN head unit. That's how to build a brand.

What NO "Mute" Button, are you kidding? I purchase this because my old radio had squeal when listening to AM Radio traffic reports. Tried all ground issues it didn't work so I purchased this unit. Good sound compared to my JVC Arsenal, but it stops there. Cannot connect my LG Android to this; cannot disable some of the SRC such as "Pandora, Sirus, USB2, etc...". What really sucks is there is no quick "MUTE", unbelievable. In my opinion way overpriced compared to models years ago.

I purchased for a Jeep TJ with limited space, installs like any other head unit, provides the power needed for 4 high end speakers and a sub (don't let 45 rms fool you it moved a bazooka well enough to feel the bass) Deal 1. My advisor (TREVOR very knowledgeable) was invaluable in helping me put together components for my jeep (just called and discussed this unit). It came with EVERYTHING needed to install. I paid to have a wiring harness made. BUTLER made a harness the was COMPLETE. 2 factory connections along with power, ground, remote wires and a note on what went where, installed unit in 30 min Deal 2. I used the Sony song pal app. with no issues and it allowed me to customize this unit and is crazy fun, (I don't use the on unit buttons very often). Bottom line, use Crutchfield!!!!!! Advisors, tech. they got me this far and its been great!!! This unit has lots of power/loud in a jeep with a hardtop, everything you need for a head unit and then some

I replaced the ancient factory cassette radio in my 1995 Toyota 4Runner with this exact fit head unit. Once the wiring harness soldering was done, the instal was a breeze.. The sound is quite good, although the RMS power specs are over rated. Loud enough for a head unit without and external amp or sub, but don't expect a "Thumper". Great features, connectability with bluetooth and NFC, voice mic and sound options and custom color options, Overall I am very happy with this Sony and glad I found it as an exact replacement fit for such and old vehicle .I intended to avoid butchering the interior without doing speaker cutouts and running miles of wire. I went with all direct fit fit Speakers, 4" two way front Memphis Audio and 5 1/4" two way Focal in the rear panels. No Subwoofer....for now. I ended up with a quite nice looking and sounding Stereo CD Receiver with Bluetooth Connectivity, XM Tuner and Hands Free Talking on Android with just enough power and volume to allow me to pleasantly drive and have fine entertainment for a reasonable amount of work and a good price. I am very happy with the sound, quality, features and looks of the Sony MEX-GS820BT.

Pros: Easy Install If You Are Good At Soldering MEX Wiring Harness Connections, Good Sound, A Bit Of Extra Power, Many Different Sound Fields, Listener Position, EQ And Custom Listening Settings As Well As Custom Lighting Options, Good Bluetooth Connectivity, XM Ready And Hands Free Android Compatibility.

Cons: RMS Power Sightly Overrated, XM Radio Controls Have No Direct Channel Number Selection On The Head Unit

So Far so good. Pretty easy install with the wiring purchased from Crutchfield. Installed on my 2003 Eurovan. Customer support was excellent. Hands free phone works great and plenty of phone mic wire to route up to sunshade without it being seen. The swivel and phone mic clip was a perfect fit for the visor. So far I've only replaced the door speakers with Alpine SPS-610C. I will be doing the tweeters and rear speakers this weekend. The sound is fantastic with just the door speakers. Cant wait for the rest to be done. The Sony head unit has a lot of functions, and is a little cumbersome to navigate, but patience and time is allowing me to move through the functions I like. The owners manual offers some decent instructions, but not A+, probably a C+ to B-. Between the manual and learn by doing you'll do fine. For my purposes I would recommend this head unit, and I would purchase again.

Pros: Hands free phone, Amp, easy install.

    Cons: navigating stereo functions.

So far it's a great unit, but haven't gotten too far into the custom tuning yet because I have trash speakers at the moment so why bother. (6.5 in front, stock 6x9 in back)

Pros: High power output, endless EQ and display color adjustment, simple remote. Face looks way better than last year's high output model

Cons: Wiring directly to the battery was a pain (Chevy Cobalt, tight engine bay, short run to the + post by the fuse box since battery is in the trunk), but I knew this when ordering it and in the end it's worth it.

I put this in a 2007 Mini Cooper convertible with the factory Harmon Kardon speakers. Also installed a small B-8PDT Sound Ordinance powered sub. It sounds very good. I also have a similar setup with a Sony MEX-100 and SO B-8PDT that does a good job and doesn't break the bank. So my review is only 4 stars just because the menu system on this radio is a bit challenging to use, I don't really like it. Part of problem is just trying to cram so much stuff into this form factor with only a handful of buttons and small display to navigate it all. But I've had Alpine stereos and others in the past that were a bit easier to control. With the Sony app you can control it remotely from your droid or iphone and overcome some of the issues of using the headunit. Allows you to change the color of display, sound profiles, and control your music from you smartphone when streaming. I stream Sirrius, Spotify and Itunes playlists into this Sony and it works great. Another really cool thing is I bought the CRUX wiring harness and steering wheel controls and not only does it control the volume from the steering wheel, I allows you to forward/back you playlist that your streaming! That is very cool for me, cause I'm always flipping through my playlists and I can do it from the steering wheel. The Sony does display song info as you click through which I like. Nice high power amp in this unit. It does a great job for me but the B-8PDT sub in the back REALLY fills

Pros: Nice built in high power amp Sony App allows control from smartphone Great bluetooth streaming

    • USB Auto (for iPhone): You can pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Sony head unit via USB and activating the Bluetooth function on your Apple device.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The Sony MEX-GS820BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The unit features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. And thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the MEX-GS820BT provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.

      • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.
      • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
Note: During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Sony MEX-GS820BT supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player, plus song/artist information display. You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Sony MEX-GS820BT for playback.

    • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the MEX-GS820BT offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the MEX-GS820BT offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Music Browsing: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat) for both stored music and music apps, the MEX-GS820BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Category or Playlist (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+).
    • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control (for iPhone): When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Sony MEX-GS820BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the MEX-GS820BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will be heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will be heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the MEX-GS820BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone).

    Android & iPhone Integration

Android Direct Connect via USB: The Sony MEX-GS820BT enables playback of stored music and music apps on select Android devices through its front- or rear-panel USB port. There are two types of modes (AOA 2.0 or MTP) to choose from based on your Android smartphone's operating system, what content you want to listen to, and what features you need.

    • AOA 2.0 (Android Open Accessory): The Sony MEX-GS820BT supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets you connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.1-7.1.2) to the MEX-GS820BT's USB port and listen to stored music and music apps from your Android device through the Pioneer receiver. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track (there is not song/artist/album info display). You'll also still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
    • MTP (Media Transfer Protocol): The MEX-GS820BT also supports MTP for playback & control of stored MP3/WMA music files on your Android (OS 4.0+) device through the Sony receiver's USB port. In this mode, you get basic playback control (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track), plus song/artist information on the receiver's LCD screen. During MTP connection, you cannot use your Android smartphone's touchscreen to control music playback and you cannot select music apps from your smartphone for playback. However, you can continue to listen to stored music on your Android smartphone through the head unit while you check your Calendar, Facebook, Texts, etc on your phone.
Note: Not all Android devices are compatible with AOA 2.0 or MTP, regardless of operating system.

iPod/iPhone Direct Connect via USB: The Sony MEX-GS820BT supports direct connection of select Lightning or 30-pin Apple iPod/iPhone devices through its front or rear panel USB port. The MEX-GS820BT offers playback of your music library or music apps, music navigation and control, song/artist/album display, and charging of select Apple devices. Simply connect your compatible iPod/iPhone using the cable that came with your Apple device, or purchase another Lightning-to-USB or dock-to-USB cable (sold separately) to be used in the car.

    • Music Browsing: The unit offers basic playback controls - such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, and Repeat/Random. Your iPod/iPhone will remain unlocked during connection, so you can continue to control your Apple device from its touchscreen for advanced music browsing and to access additional music apps.
    • Song/Artist Info: The digital media receiver will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information; including Track number, Elapsed playing time, Song Title, & Artist/Album Name. The MEX-GS820BT will also display song/artist information and station identification from select music apps.
Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Smartphone Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected Apple iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your device has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

    Audio & DSP Section

High Power Class-D Amplifier: A built-in class-D amp delivers huge power with minimal interference, for audio that's crystal clear even at its loudest. Circuitry and components are carefully laid out for low-noise, highly efficient electric power transmission. Placing the power block close to the input and amp minimizes power loss, while electrolytic capacitors ensure precise, responsive bass. An oversized heat sink with an optimally designed fin structure ensures efficient ventilation for your amp.

    Notes:
    • Because of its high-powered amplifier design, the Sony MEX-GS820BT does require that a separate +12V constant power wire is run to the battery with a separate inline 15A fuse in vehicles with lower than a 15A fuse protecting the factory radio. Check out the "Accessories" tab for wiring kit.
    • This Sony receiver's built-in high-powered amplifier isn't compatible with car audio systems where an outboard factory amplifier will remain active.

CTA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the Sony MEX-GS820BT are compliant with the CTA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the MEX-GS820BT are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 45 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 100 watts x 4-channels (400 total watts)

6ch/5V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Sony MEX-GS820BT is equipped with 5-volt Front, Rear, & Sub pre-amp outputs giving you the ability to connect external amplifiers to your car stereo system. The unit's subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's main volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

Note: You can also connect a subwoofer to this head unit without the need of a separate power amplifier. Simply connect a single subwoofer (4-8 ohm) directly to head unit's left or right rear speaker leads (but not both). Same subwoofer controls apply.

High-Pass & Low-Pass Crossovers: The front & rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the high-pass crossover. The subwoofer preamp output features a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the low-pass crossover.

EQ10: Select from a variety of EQ presets like R&B, Rock, Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Electronic, Jazz, Soul, Country, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom mode allows you to make your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of 10 different frequency bands - Band 1 (32Hz), Band 2 (63Hz), Band 3 (125Hz), Band 4 (250Hz), Band 5 (500Hz), Band 6 (1khz), Band 7 (2khz), Band 8 (4kHz), Band 9 (8kHz), and Band 10 (16kHz).

Digital Time Alignment (DTA): This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far. You can also further fine tune the listening position from -3 to +3.

DSO & DSEE: Dynamic Stage Organizer (DS) adjusts the signal, improving the stereo positioning so music sounds like it's coming from the dashboard. Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) improves digitally compressed music files by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process.

ExtraBass + RBE: Activate ExtraBass at the touch of a button for an instant, low-end boost. Unlike conventional bass boosters, ExtraBass minimizes distortion at all volume levels by automatically adjusting frequency and gain to their optimal positions. RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer) enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.

ClearAudio+: ClearAudio+ reproduces sound by optimizing the digital signal with the Sony recommended sound settings. It automatically adjusts the head unit's EQ, ExtraBass, and DSO.

Advanced Auto Volume (AAV) + Loudness: This feature adjusts the playback volume level of all playback sources to the optimum level. Loudness reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Remote Control

Music Center App (formerly know as SongPal): Download Sony's free Music Center app (for Apple iOS 9.0+ and Android OS 4.4+) onto your Bluetooth connected Apple iPhone or Android smartphone and take control of the Sony MEX-GS820BT head unit right from your mobile device. You can even assign a music application within the Music Center app as a voice tag, so you can access it by simply speaking the name of the application. While using voice commands there will still be times where you have to make a selection on your smartphone's touchscreen.
    • Notification Readout (Android only): Exclusive to Android devices, incoming SMS/E-mail and Twitter/Facebook/Calendar notifications are automatically read aloud through the MEX-GS820BT and your vehicle's speakers to keep you safe and in touch. You can even reply to a text message via voice command and a list of preset replies.

Wireless Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X231) for easy operation. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions (not Bluetooth) of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).

    Display Features

Detachable Face w/ Caution Alarm: The Sony MEX-GS820BT features a detachable face for theft prevention. If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the head unit's front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the unit's built-in amplifier is used. No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Dynamic Color Illuminator (35,000 colors): Dynamic Color Illuminator lets you match the head unit's LCD & button illumination to complement your existing vehicle lighting components. You can select from 15 preset colors or a customized color (R-G-B). You can choose to use the same color for the LCD screen and button illumination, or use a separate color for each one. You can even set the head unit's LCD screen's illumination to pulse with your music.

Sound Synchronization: The color illumination changes according to synchronization of playing music and sound.

Auto Scroll: The Auto Scroll feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc or device.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the SRC/OFF button once will switch sources. Pressing and holding the SRC/OFF button for one second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. To turn the unit off completely, you must press and hold the SRC/OFF button for two seconds.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting after 30 minutes of the power being turned off to the head unit.

Will this work with an iPhone X?? The specs show up to an 8, but on other units it lists the X. I'd think it would, but want to be sure before I pull the trigger.

Yes. The stereo was developed and tested before the X became available but the USB port is compatible with all of the lighting-connector iPhone models.

Wondering if the time alignment on this unit is fully adjustable (in feet/inches) or if the settings are more general (normal, far, near)? Thanks!

not exactly sure what your referring to, but i will assume it is for the listening position option. It seems to be more of a general adjustment, ref. owners manual pg. 23.

Direct 12ga power cable for Sony mex-gs820bt . This new model has a small 18ga power wire coming out from the head unit . Should a step down butt connector be used to go from 18 ga. To 12 ga. ? Sony's earlier 4 x 45 RMS models used a much larger ga. Out for power !

Hey Scott! I also have he Sony MEX model in question however since I now have an Audi TT with an alarm I didn't want to attempt installing this myself. I had a local company install it so I have no idea what they did. I can tell you this unit sounds amazing and I'm super happy with my choice.beat of luck!!

The bigger ga would be nice. I use solder seal wire connectors, they're heat shrink/solder in one. If you can use a heat gun, you can solder and shrink like a pro.

    Q
So I am installing the MEX-GS820BT with its high power internal amp 45watt x 4 . I ordered it with the ready/harness . My concern is the small gauge power & ground wires coming out of the receiver compared to the heavy ones on sony's earlier models with this much power . Crutchfield recommended the use of a 12Ga. wire kit . Do I just connect the small lead of the harness to the much larger 12Ga from the battery ? Have found very little info online about this Sony model !

I used the kit that was recommended by crutchfield it was strange to me but everything works great. This stereo is amazing.

I ran into the same concern when installing this stereo. I also purchased the 12 gauge wiring kit to power it directly from the battery. With the power wires, I crimped a butt connector to both the stereo wire and the 12 gauge wire coming from the battery and then inserted a 20 amp fuse (I believe it was a 20 amp fuse. It was the same amp fuse that comes with the 12 gauge wiring kit) into the other ends of the butt connectors to connect them together. I didn't crimp them to the fuse but used electrical tape. This way if the battery was to much power for the stereo wire the fuse would blow instead of frying the stereo wire. For the ground I just butt connected them together and grounded it on the metal floor. It worked great and I have had no issues. It made me feel better having a safety fuse between the two power wires. I hope this helps.

Do I need a Rux knobe for my Alpine mono subwoofer amp or will I be able to do that through this head unit ?
    [ Scott  Jun 06, 2018 ]

The Sony MEX-GS820BT does include subwoofer controls so you can adjust the subwoofer's volume level independently from the head unit's main volume control (from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments). For more details or to discuss further, please contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks!

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Is it possible to lock a certain color and keep it the whole time so it doesn't change colors while playing music?

yes, once you delete the demo mode (that is what most see in video's) there are 2 zones, buttons and display you can set to different color's and several modes, one will dance with music, another just changes thru range of colors I used the song pal app, its easy to set up with a wide range of colors, sound tuning, vehicle tuning ect. it does flash white when you change modes or make a change balance ect. example: using the source button on radio and switching from radio to BT it will flash white then return to set color hope this helps IMHO amazing sound quality, without an external amp. very versatile head unit

Yes you can. I have one color for the central info and a second color for the control buttons. Matches my dash perfect. Consult your manual for the details.

Yes, you can set a color for the face and a different color for the display. You can use 2 different colors or one color for everything. To stop the colors from changing, turn the DEMO MODE TO OFF.with the big button. 1 hit the button, go to DEMO ON HIT THE SIDE BOTTOM to set to OFF. and that's it.

I noticed it was recommended to wire directly to the car battery with a 12 gauge kit. Are there directions where to connect the 12 gauge wire to the head unit?

You connect the power cable to the yellow cable coming out of head unit. I just cut it long and folded it to get a good connection on the larger connector before crimping. Be sure to add an inline fuse close to battery. I bought the 12 gauge kit they suggested and it came preinstalled. Great radio and happy with my purchase. It gives you more power without an amp. For super loud an amp is the way to go. I just wanted some extra power without an amp so it fits my needs.

I had mine professionally installed. But I do. believe the owners manual goes through the installation process and how to connect to the battery. So far I'm very please with this stereo. I used this with a small 8" powered sound ordinance sub and the combo is very good.

I recently installed this Sony in my 1995 Toyota 4Runner. The Wiring Harness that comes with the order for your specific vehicle, will need to be soldered and heat shrinked to the Wiring Harness from thw back of rhe Sony. There are clear instructions on connecting the specific wire directly to the battery. I elected not to do this and wire it as directed on the installation sheet. In the future, I may do a test someday to determine if the unit is putting out full power and delivering optimum performance. I did notice this unit seems a bit "Underpowered" for the EMS Rating and distorts faster than I expected as the volume is increased. I installed new Memphis Audio 4" Direct Fit drivers in front and Focal 5 1/4" drivers direct fit on the rear, with no subwoofer. It sounds very good compared to the old factory radio. I love the features, lighting, bell's and whistles and amazing interface and sound fields. Bluetooth is fantastic ! Added XM tuner. Very satisfied!

Buy the recommended wire kit. It includes the fuse. Then it is pretty straight forward, in that you need to find a path though the firewall. If this sounds confusing, watch a YouTube video or hire someone to do it.
