About the Sony STR-DH190

Eric A.

Great stereo sound with Bluetooth® convenience

I grew up listening to records on my dad's two-channel rig, but I'm a big fan of adding a few modern conveniences to the classic setup.
Sony STR-DH190 stereo receiver with Bluetooth

The Sony STR-DH190 has Bluetooth® Standby, which lets you remotely activate the receiver and stream music from your paired smartphone.

Great stereo sound with Bluetooth® convenience

I grew up listening to records on my dad's two-channel rig, but I'm a big fan of adding a few modern conveniences to the classic setup.

The Sony STR-DH190 gives you 90 watts per channel to drive your speakers, and a phono input so you can listen to your turntable. It also includes Bluetooth so you can stream files from your paired smartphone, which is a nice touch.

Ready and waiting

The STR-DH190 offers a handy bit of technology known as Bluetooth Standby, which means you can activate the receiver with your phone without having to walk over and press a button on the front plate. You can fire it up and start streaming your favourite tunes without interrupting your daily routine.

Discrete Stereo Amplifier: The Sony STR-DH190's discrete stereo amplifier delivers high power and quality sound. It is rated at 90 watt x 2-channel (into 8Ω, @ 20-20kHz, with THD 0.09%). Every component in the STR-DH190 has been designed for detail and clarity.

  • Reinforced Chassis: A reinforced frame and beam chassis design reduces transmitted vibration from speaker sound pressure for more focused, powerful sound.
  • Rigid Construction: Rigid parts hold the heat sink in place, reducing transmitted vibration from speaker sound pressure.
  • Optimal Layout: The phono amplifier and transformer are positioned optimally to minimize interference from the magnetic field.
  • Large Capacity Power Transformer: The stereo receiver utilizes a large capacity power transformer built for clarity.

Tone Control + Pure Direct Mode: The Sony STR-DH190 features independent Bass and Treble controls (-10 to +10 dB), so you can adjust the tonal quality of your connected speakers. Pure Direct Mode bypasses the Tone controls and turns off the front-panel display, allowing you to enjoy higher-fidelity sound from all inputs.

Analog Inputs: The Sony STR-DH190 has six analog audio inputs, including a Phono MM input and a front-panel Aux input. You can give each input a custom name (up to 8 characters) for easy identification.

  • Phono MM Input: The Phono MM input lets you connect your turntable with a MM cartridge so you can enjoy your vinyl record collection through the receiver.
  • Front-Panel Aux: A front-panel 3.5mm Aux input lets you easily connect a portable music player to the stereo receiver.

Note: This receiver is not equipped with any digital audio inputs or video inputs.

A/B Speaker Outputs: The STR-DH190's A/B speaker outputs lets you connect up to two pair of speakers. You can easily switch between A or B speakers, or use both speakers together and have the same music source playing through two pair of speakers. The A/B speaker outputs consist of spring-clip terminals that will accept connection of bare speaker wire (up to 12AWG) and pin-connectors.

  • When Using Speakers A or B: The Sony STR-DH190 supports 6Ω-16Ω speakers when using either A or B speaker outputs (not both).
  • When Using Speakers A and B: The Sony receiver supports 12Ω-16Ω speakers when using both A & B speaker outputs at the same time.

Stereo Analog Out: The stereo analog output allows you to connect a recording device for recording of any of the receiver's analog audio inputs. Tone control does not affect the signal output of the stereo analog record output.

1/4" Headphone Jack: The receiver features a 1/4" headphone jack for private listening. When headphones are plugged into this output, the sound from the speakers is muted.

Volume Range: The Sony stereo receiver has a volume range of 1 (Min) to 73 (Max).

Built-in Bluetooth & FM Tuner

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Sony STR-DH190 features built-in Bluetooth 4.2 with support for A2DP 1.2 and AVRCP 1.6. You'll be able to wirelessly stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content from your Bluetooth source device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.) to the stereo receiver. You can pair multiple devices with the Sony STR-DH190, but only one can be connected and used for playback at a time. The STR-DH190 has a wireless Bluetooth range of approximately 98.4'.

  • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the STR-DH190 offers support of AAC.  By supporting AAC, the stereo receiver offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
  • Playback Control: You'll be able to control Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Stop functions from the included IR remote. Advanced music browsing will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth source device.
  • Bluetooth Standby: With Bluetooth Standby, you can even turn the stereo receiver on from your paired smartphone or tablet.
Note: The STR-DH190 does not display song/artist/album information; continue to use your Bluetooth source device's screen to view song/artist info.

FM Tuner: The Sony STR-DH190 stereo receiver is equipped with a built-in FM tuner with 30 digital presets, station naming (up to 8 characters), and auto tuning. You can switch between Stereo & Mono mode. An FM wire antenna is included. This receiver is not equipped with an AM tuner.

Remote & Convenience Features

IR Remote : The supplied IR remote provides wireless operation of the Sony STR-DH190 stereo receiver. It also offers basic playback control for your connected Bluetooth audio streaming device.

Sleep Timer: The receiver can be set to turn off automatically after a specified time (30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.)

Auto Standby: This energy saving feature enables the receiver to set to automatically switch to standby mode if it is not in use or no audio signal is sent to it for 20 minutes.

Q
c an i hook up surround system with str dh190 ? Please do advise compatible or the matching speakers with impedence and Watts. Thanks.
dipak  Apr 01, 2024
1 answer
A
Hey Dipak, the STR-DH190 is a stereo receiver and is only capable of 2ch audio rather than any type of home theater processing. You would need to look at a home theater receiver if you wanted to start building out a system.

Q
c an i hook up surround system with str dh190 ?
dipak  Apr 01, 2024
1 answer
A
The Sony STR-DH190 is a stereo receiver Dipak, so it is designed to drive a pair of speakers and not a surround sound system. If you would like a 5-channel surround sound system, the Sony STR-DH590 in the link below is an excellent choice! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_158STDH590/Sony-STR-DH590.html

Q
is there any way to hook up a 75 ohm coax cable to the antenna connector ?
john  Mar 24, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings John. This Sony is using a more proprietary antenna connector. To use a COAX connector, you would need some type of adapter which I could not find.
hogan  Mar 25, 2024 (Staff)
Q
Howdy from Cooperstown. I noticed my volume knob hardly changes it anymore. It stays the same or occasionally changes by 1 step. The remote changes it normally. Is some setting disabled? Over time, I've rarely used the knob, moreso the remote. Is it worn out or disconnecting somehow?
dave  Mar 13, 2024
1 answer
A
It is always possible with rotary knob controls over time, Dave. I would first try using the knob more to see if the contacts within start working again. If not, using the remote or your Bluetooth source device for volume control is a solid call!

Q
What class of Amp is the sony strdh190?
jack  Feb 23, 2024

A
Greetings Jack. Thank you for your question. The Sony STR DH190 uses a class A/B amplifier.

Q
If I Bluetooth to my speakers am I still limited to only 6 ohms or higher for my speakers or can I use 4 ohms speakers then?
matthew  Dec 26, 2023
1 answer
A
This receiver does not have the ability to transmit Bluetooth out to other speakers, which means that we cannot connect Bluetooth speakers. Nevertheless, in a situation where you are sending Bluetooth audio to a speaker, the speaker would be self-powered, meaning we wouldn't worry about impedance.

I am looking at the Sony STR-DH190 and the Yamaha R-S202. I'm running two sets of Cerwin- Vega speakers. LS-12s and D9s. Which receiver will sound better?
mick  Dec 25, 2023

A
I'm guessing the Yamaha would sound better. I only bought the sony because it was cheaper at the time, and I just needed some tunes in my garage.
richard  Dec 31, 2023

I'm not an expert with which receiver would sound better for your setup, but I've got the Sony and am very happy with it. Hope someone can answer your specific question

Q
How can I hook subwoofer to this rec. ? Wireless sub work? What equipment do I need to buy?
chris  Oct 24, 2023
1 answer
A
This Sony STR-DH190 stereo receiver does not have a subwoofer specific RCA output, Chris. The best way to connect a subwoofer would be to use a subwoofer like the SVS SB-1000 Pro in the link below that has a speaker-level input. This would not be wireless, as you would need to run speaker wires from the terminals on your Sony to the inputs on the SVS subwoofer. You do have an RCA preamp output, but it is not controlled by volume and would be a 100% volume output if you attempted to use it with a wireless subwoofer adapter. This would not be ideal as you would have to adjust your volume independently on your subwoofer each time you listened, so a speaker-level input subwoofer is the best move with the Sony! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_946SB1KPBA/SVS-SB-1000-Pro-Black-Ash.html

Which speakers will work with this receiver. Can you give me suggestions?
ariel  Aug 28, 2023
1 answer
A
For information on selecting the best speakers for your system, I would recommend reaching out to an advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help explain the differences between the different speaker options and help you make the best choice for your needs.

Q
Can I use 4 ohms speakers?
steve  Aug 23, 2023
1 answer
A
Thank you for your question, Steve. This receiver is only stable down to 6 ohms, so you can't use 4-ohm speakers, or it will cause the receiver to overheat and can permanently damage it.
andrea  Aug 23, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Can you add an external amplifier to the STRDH190 to hook up a passive subwoofer?
scott  Aug 09, 2023
1 answer
A
Thank you for your question, Scott. This Sony does not have a subwoofer out or preamp out for connecting an amp or powered subwoofer. I recommend reaching out to one of our Advisors at 1-800-324-9695 or by online chat, they'll be able to help you with another option.

Q
Would this receiver have better sound quality and clarity than my vintage Sony STR-D965 (1995) receiver?
loren  Jun 01, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Loren, and thank you for your question. Unfortunately finding someone that can or has listened to both will be tough. I would not have the best answer you on this, my gut feeling due to the price point, would be the same at best.
hogan  Jun 01, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Would this receiver work well with 2 JBL speakers, Northridge Series, N38, 8 Ohms? The speakers are roughly 20 years old but still look nice and work. The receiver and speakers will be in an office, so the volume will usually be low. I need a receiver that you can stream music over from a smart phone. Thanks.
b  May 20, 2023
1 answer
A
This Sony STR-DH190 would be an excellent choice, B. The Sony has Bluetooth for connection to smart devices and plenty of power at 90 watts x2 channels into 8-ohm speakers even if you did decide to crank it up every once and a while! Make sure to also grab a spool of our Crutchfield 16-gauge speaker wire in the link below if you need so you can get connected with the Sony right out of the box. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_007CC16L/Crutchfield-Speaker-Wire-50-ft-roll.html

Q
can a Subfwoofer speaker be connected?
keith  May 09, 2023
1 answer
A
You can connect certain specific subwoofers, Keith. You will need to use one that has a speaker-level input like the SVS SB-1000 in the link below. There is no subwoofer RCA output on the Sony, so your powered subwoofer choice needs to have the speaker-level inputs to be able to connect to the Sony! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_946SB1KBA/SVS-SB-1000-Black-Ash.html

Q
will this receiver be ok with JVC-SK-90 speakers?
al  Apr 30, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Al, and thank you for your question. Your classics are rated for 70 watts, they are 8 ohms, thise Sony would be okay, but I would be more worried about the speakers. This receiver puts out 90 watts per channel, so your JVC will be getting 20 more watts than they are rated for, and close to 50 years old. If you are the only person controlling the volume, I think you would be fine. If not, look for a receiver with a bit less power.
hogan  Apr 30, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Would this receiver be ok with KEF 104/2 speakers?
sam  Apr 23, 2023
1 answer
A
Thank you for your question, Sam. KEF 104/2's have a low impedance of 4-ohms, so they would not be compatible with this Sony receiver since it only goes down to 6-ohms. I recommend reaching out to one of our Advisors either by phone 1.800.324.9695 or online chat. They'll be happy to help find a receiver that will work with your vintage KEF speakers.

Q
Are you sure about the 901 being connected?
robert  Apr 03, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Robert, and thank you for your question. Technically the Bose 901s can be connected to any receiver, its the Bose 901 EQ that has the issue. The EQ needs the receiver/amp to have a line out/line in loop. Mostly called tape monitor loop, or preout/main in. So you can connect the 901s, just not the 901 EQ.
hogan  Apr 03, 2023 (Staff)
Q
are you sure about bose 901 ?
patricia  Apr 03, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Patricia, and thank you for your question. The Bose 901's use a Bose equalizer. That equalizer would need a receiver to have a main in, and a main out to feed the Bose EQ a signal, then accept that signal back into the receiver, some call it a tape loop, or monitor loop. Receivers today just don't have those inputs/outputs. The 901s are speakers though. If you wanted to use the 901's with this Sony, you just would not use the Bose EQ, and of course, the 901's would not sound like 901's.

Q
Is it compatible with Sirius XM ?
daniel  Mar 21, 2023
1 answer
A
The Sony STR-DH190 does not have any built-in SiriusXM capability Daniel, but you can add it! The easiest way would be to use the XM app while streaming from your smartphone via Bluetooth. You can also add the SXWB1V1 in the link below to use XM with the Sony as well as take into your ride with the included car kit! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_700TOURKIT/SiriusXM-SXWB1V1-SXDH4.html

Q
Can you run a turn table and CD changer?
james l.  Feb 19, 2023
1 answer
A
Yes. The STR-DH190 includes inputs suitable for a turntable and CD changer. Keep in mind that the CD changer will need to be a player, and not a CD transport. In other words, the CD changer must have analog RCA audio output.
zachary  Feb 20, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Can an EQ be added to this receiver?
randy  Jan 31, 2023
1 answer
A
You cannot add an EQ to the Sony STR-DH190 Stereo, and it does have EQ features built-in. You CAN use any RCA line-level EQ in between a single source (say a CD or Tape player) and then run the EQ's outputs into the Sony STR-DH190 Stereo, Randy. You've got options!

Q
I want to use my older turntable to this receiver but it does not have a mm needle cartridge will my turn table still work with this receiver ?????
kevin  Jan 31, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Kevin, and thank you for your question. There are two main types of cartridge's. Moving Coli, and Moving Magnet. If not a Moving magnet, then it has to be Moving Coli, and that will not work on this stereo receiver. Moving Coil, cartridges typically would also need a separate phono preamp. If you have some time, lease call one of our advisors 800-324-9695 and have them check your Turntable, and cartridge.

Will this be compatible with Bose 301 speakers purchased in 1985?
frederic  Jan 21, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Fred, and thank you for your question. The vintage Bose 301 speakers would be 8 ohm and compatible with most receivers and amplifiers that would be 150 watts or less per channel.

Q
Can I connect Bose 901 speakers to this amplifier?
ivan  Oct 01, 2022
1 answer
A
No. The Bose 901 speakers require a specialized set up. This receiver ( and most modern receivers) will not be able to run the 901's alone. You often need a pre-amp and amp separate to be able to use the 901's EQ.

Q
Can this built in amp adequately push a set of 250 ohm headphones?
brent  Jul 23, 2021
1 answer
A
This receiver's headphone output has the typical output strength for a receiver and is not expected to work well with headphones that have a 250 ohm resistance. Those headphones will need a headphone amp to get the power to make the play well. We have advisors that can be reached by calling 1-800-324-9695 who will be happy to help discuss your goals and give you a personal recommendation on gear to use with them.

How would I hook a amplifier to this reciever?

This receiver only has Audio inputs and outputs to speakers. The Owners Manual shows how to select the various inputs and use of the Volume Control from the Reciver or the Remote. Q
Is this receiver ARC compatible? I would like to run my TV through the receiver.
glen  May 17, 2021
1 answer
A
If your television set has an analog audio output (Dual RCA or 1/8" stereo), you can connect to this receiver via wires. If your television set has Bluetooth audio out capability, you could connect to the receiver via wireless technology.

Q
Can I hook up a powered sub woofer to this receiver?
steve  May 08, 2021
3 answers
A
Yes you can - in a round about way. Since there is not a dedicated 'sub-out' on this receiver, I used the B speaker terminals for the subwoofer. After consulting with the techs at Crutchfield, here's what to do. You will need a 'Speaker-Level to Line-Level Interface (Russound ADP-1.2 that Crutchfield sells inexpensively), and an RCA cable with 2 male jacks at both ends. I used a good quality 14 gauge speaker wire connected to the B speaker terminals on the receiver then connected to the Interface. Plug the RCA cable into the Interface and then to the subwoofer. My Klipsch subwoofer works perfectly with this Sony receiver set up this way. I hope this helps you out as it certainly solved my problem.

Q
I have a fluance RT-80 that I would like to connect to this receiver. The RT-80 has a preamp so do I need to connect the ground wire between the fluance and this receiver or can I simply plug in the RCAs?
noal  Apr 20, 2021
1 answer
A
I think you always need to connect the turntable ground wire to the receiver. I suspect the ground wire grounds the turntable chassis rather than the electronics. After all, all turntables connect with RCA plugs. Also, be sure to plug into an auxiliary input of the receiver rather than the phono input.

Is this capable of playing Atmos 7.1 audio?
bill  Dec 20, 2020
2 answers
A
This is a basic receiver intended for casual use. It only supports four speakers, so 7.1 is beyond its capabilities. I use it to stream music in my garage and it is fully capable for such. You are probably looking at a 2x price increase to get Atmos.
timothy d  Dec 21, 2020

Frankly, I have no idea; I haven't even heard about Atmos Audio. Sorry. I can only tell you that this receiver handles CDs and FM radio excellently.

Most turntables come with the cable attached. The turntables that do not have attached audio cables should use an RCA audio cable to connect to this receiver. Here are those cables: https://www.crutchfield.com/g_20110/RCA-Audio-Cables.html?tp=1904

Will this unit play the MartinLogan Motion 20i 4 ohm speakers? Those speakers say compatible with 4/6/8 ohms, whatever that really means.
steven  Sep 08, 2020
3 answers
A
i'm not really sure. i used 8 ohm speakers.
kris  Sep 08, 2020
A
I am not familiar with the MartinLogan speakers, but the Sony STR-DH190 provides a way to select either 8 or 6 ohms as the minimum speaker impedance that can be used. This is done through the AMP MENU button on the remote control unit as described in the Operating Instructions booklet. However, note that the RMS power rating of the amplifier (90 W + 90 W - 20 Hz to 20kHz, THD 0.09%) is specified for 8 ohm speakers. I see no power spec for 6 ohm speakers. This impedance setting applies to using either the A or B speaker output alone. If using both A and B outputs, the minimum impedance is doubled (12 or 16 ohms).
charles  Sep 08, 2020
A
No idea, really, but we have an old set of Cambridge Soundworks 6 ohm speakers, and they sound better with the Sony than they did with our previous receiver, which was a KLH unit (which may tell you how old I am.) Furthermore, Crutchfield's customer service is unbeatable, and I would not hesitate to order from them.

I have a older record player (. I've heard the term "pre amp" before when it comes to record players. Do I need one of those with this unit?
daniel  Sep 08, 2020

Nope. This receiver has a dedicated "pre-amp" built-in. As long as you hook your record player up to the PHONO input, you are good. Nothing else needed.
jeremy  Sep 08, 2020
A
this unit has a built in phono preamp, so does not require. you could still use one, however... if you wanted to invest, as those external units tend to vary highly in terms of quality. this one is a simple solution, though.
jamiel  Sep 08, 2020
A
With this Sony model you do not. It is stereo receiver and not a home theater system that is entirely digital. My older (70's!) Sony turntable with analog signal plays right into this receiver in a dedicated phono input.

Q
If I hook up my turntable to the phono inputs, and hook my computer to the outputs (near input 4) will I get an amplified signal to my computer so I can record the music?
neal  Jul 24, 2020
4 answers
A
The stereo analog output allows you to connect a recording device for recording of any of the receiver's analog audio inputs. Tone control does not affect the signal output of the stereo analog record output.
thomas  Aug 07, 2020 (Staff)
A
Yes, I think it is a Line Level output. How you record it with you computer is entirely up to you, but it will be a robust signal. In a pinch you could also get a signal to the computer from the headphones out on the front. But RCA outs on the back would probably be a better choice. Enjoy!

A
I am sorry I don't know the answer to that question. Call Crutchfield support, they are awesome and very knowledgeable.
clydell  Aug 05, 2020

This is feasible, assuming you have the correct hardware to process that output; the volume is on the lower side if you're using output 4 (esp with the Phono input) so be careful when switching between it and speakers.

Hello: I listened to my reel to reel unit for many years and enjoyed it greatly. Looking at my Sony unit there should be no reason you could not use this STR-190 with your reel to reel unit. The only thing might be the grounding of your unit. Does it have a have a separate grounding wire? There is a grounding terminal on the back of my unit. This is for grounding a Phono player. I don't know if it would work ok with a reel to reel player. On my unit you would connect your reel to reel to input terminal #$. Hopes this helps you with your decision. By the way, I have had good service with my Sony. Stay safe and healthy.

Can you hook up a subwoofer from input #4 marked out?
jeff  Jan 24, 2020

Yes, you can technically hook up a subwoofer to those outputs but they are fixed-level meaning you can't change the volume or tone of the output signal. It is far less ideal than a variable pre-amp output or subwoofer output.

I see there's a bluetooth standby feature. Is there a way to have the Bluetooth completely off? I prefer not to use Bluetooth at all while having the system not searching for it either. Thank you!
thomas  Nov 09, 2019
2 answers
A
You can (& need to) disable that feature via the menus accessed from the remote control. Read the manual to make this process more clear. I turned mine off because while I do use it for playing music from my laptop and phone, if I'm listening to a record on one input, and I power up my laptop with Bluetooth on, the receiver will sense that and SWITCH to the Bluetooth input. I then have to command the receiver to go back to the phono or whatever input I was using before.
robert  Dec 05, 2021
A
Hi Thomas, thank you for your question. Bluetooth standby is a feature that will allow you to turn your receiver on with your paired Bluetooth device. The Bluetooth feature will only be turned on if you choose to, and is not on, nor is it searching or looking for Bluetooth devices nearby. Bluetooth is fully optional. Feel free to chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695, any member of our Advisor team will be happy to help you out with any other questions you may have.

You can send a signal to an already powered amp out of the Tape Output, via RCA cable + adapters. This receiver is designed to power up to 2 sets of regular speakers via speaker wire, not as a head for a PA, or to send power to large monitor speakers.

This receiver is prepared to accept external blue tooth access sources so I see no reason why you woud NEED an external DAC. Scouring the manual was futile. What is the thickest gauge speaker wire that the holes in the spring clip speaker connectors on the rear panel will accept? I would want to use 14 gauge wire to connect 6 ohm speakers to the STR-DH190 receiver, if possible, but would not want the holes in the spring clip connectors to be too small for 14 gauge wire to fit. In that case, and only 16 gauge or thinner wire will fit, I will need to look for only 8 ohm or higher impedence speakers. Thanks.
