About the Sony UBP-X700

Small footprint, big performance

I recently named the Sony UBP-X700 4K Blu-ray player the "best budget 4K Blu-ray player of 2020." If your main concern is the video quality of your Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, you'll want to take a hard look.
Sony UBP-X700 4K Blu-ray player

The Sony UBP-X700 4K Blu-ray player fits neatly in your TV setup and serves up a beautiful 4K picture.

Small footprint, big performance

I recently named the Sony UBP-X700 4K Blu-ray player the "best budget 4K Blu-ray player of 2020." If your main concern is the video quality of your Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, you'll want to take a hard look.

This player delivers a sharp 4K picture and features the deep color palette that Sony 4K TVs are known for. The two main differences between it and the newer Sony UBP-X800M2 are: (1) size — this player is more compact, and (2) wireless tunes  — you won't find multi-room audio or Bluetooth® here. (But you can still play pretty much any music disc or digital file on a connected USB drive.)

High Dynamic Range gives you the richest picture yet

The UBP-X700 is ready for Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with HDR (High Dynamic Range). These discs offer the absolute highest level of picture detail available. HDR allows compatible TVs to display extremely bright and dark black picture content together within the same image.

And this player supports the HDR10 format, but also the more sophisticated Dolby Vision™ format via a firmware upgrade. Dolby Vision can adjust brightness and color levels on a scene-by-scene basis. In the right director's hands, it can be mesmerizing.

Sound that pulls you into the action

All the top movie sound formats are supported, too. You can send three-dimensional audio formats like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X to a compatible receiver via HDMI. This gives you a home theater sound experience that's worthy of the super-crisp images you'll see on your screen.

Smooth 4K video streaming

Sony Blu-ray players usually offer a good variety of streaming video services. And the UBP-X700 even offers 4K streaming options, so you can get a better picture from Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. Built-in Wi-Fi makes it easy to connect to your network. (We recommend having an internet speed of 20Mbps or faster for 4K streaming.)

Disc & USB Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Sony UBP-X700 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray UHD BD-ROM, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE
DVD DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
CD CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW, SACD

Ultra HD Blu-Ray: Ultra HD Blu-ray provides these key features and advantages over standard Blu-ray.

  • 4K Resolution: Ultra HD Blu-ray supports resolutions of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels. That's 4x as many pixels as Full HD televisions, and 27x as many pixels as Standard Definition televisions.
  • Wider Color Gamut: Ultra HD Blu-ray can display over 75% of the visible color spectrum; this is known as "Wider Color Gamut". That's more than twice the color range of current HDTVs.
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range): Ultra HD Blu-ray also supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) video. Dynamic range is the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks on screen. HDR means that scenes with high contrast can be shown with much greater clarity and detail.
  • Smooth, Realistic Motion: Ultra HD Blu-ray supports progressive frame rates of 24, 25, 50 and 60 frames a second, enabling smoother, more realistic motion.
  • Greater Capacity & Speed: Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs will be available in a dual layer 66 gigabyte disc and a triple layer 100 gigabyte disc. Ultra HD Blu-ray can stream video up to a maximum of 108/128 Mbps for 66Gb and 100Gb discs.
  • Backward Compatible: Ultra HD Blu-ray players will play all current Blu-ray Disc & DVD content. When connected to a current HDTV television, the player will output a standard HDTV signal. Ultra HD Blu-ray players will support existing Blu-ray media, as well as provide down conversion and HDR to SDR conversion functionality to match the connected television's capabilities.

Note: Like standard BD, Ultra HD Blu-ray discs use region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. This Blu-ray player is region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

USB Port: The front-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to play photo, videos, and music files on a connected USB device. The player can recognize Mass Storage Class (MSC) Devices that are FAT-compatible and Still Image Capture Devices (SICD) class devices. The player can recognize up to 500 folders/files. The USB port also allows you to enjoy additional content (such as BonusView) on certain Blu-ray Disc titles. Some BD-ROMs have bonus content and other data which can be downloaded to an inserted USB Flash Drive (minimum 1 GB recommended, sold separately).

Compatible Audio/Video/Photo Formats: The Sony UHD Blu-ray disc player supports playback of the following audio/video/photo files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs; plus compatible USB memory devices.

Media Format File Type
Audio High Resolution: AIFF /ALAC /FLAC / WAV (up to 24-bit/192kHz); DSD (2.8/5.8/11.2MHz)
Compressed: MP3 / WMA / AAC (up to 48kHz/320kbps)
Video AVCHD, AVI, FLV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, Motion JPEG, MKV, WMV9, XVID
Photo JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, MPO, WEBP

Direct Stream Digital (DSD): Enjoy studio-quality sound thanks to the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio codec; designed specifically for High-Resolution Audio. This 1-bit format utilizes a stream of very high frequency 1s and 0s to recreate audio waveforms at a higher resolution than conventional codecs. The result is clearer, crisper, High-Resolution Audio quality. The UHD Blu-ray player supports DSD 5.6MHz decoding thru BD, DVD, CD, USB, and DLNA.

Video Section

HDMI 2.0a Output + HDMI Audio Only Output: The Sony UHD Blu-ray player is equipped with dual HDMI outputs for separating audio and video signals (the HDMI Out 2 does not output video signal). The HDMI Out 1 can be used to carry both digital video and audio all in one cable, plus it supports the latest HDMI 2.0a spec. You can choose to use the HDMI Out 2 to send audio only to your AV receiver and the HDMI Out 1 to send only video to your Ultra-HD TV. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K.

Note: Use a premium high-speed HDMI cable with 18 Gbps and above to view 4K and HDR content optimally.

Ultra HD 4K Playback & Upscaling: With stunning UHD 4K, Sony's Ultra HD Blu-ray Player gives you 4x the resolution of full 1080p HD and boasts incredibly life-like images with a level of detail and clarity like never before. You can even upscale your favorite non-4K video content and enjoy it in 4K Ultra-HD (3,840 x 2,160) with this UHD Blu-ray Player and your Ultra HD TV.

Note: To enjoy 4K, you must have a compatible 4K television connected to the UHD Blu-ray player via HDMI.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) Video: With HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology, the Ultra HD Blu-ray Player delivers dynamic UHD content in exceptional quality with a greater range of color contrast and brightness, enhancing details from the original film format. Experience sharp contrasts and brightness with deeper blacks and brighter whites. The UBP-X700 supports HDR 10 right out of the box and Dolby Vision through a firmware update (now available).

  • HDR 10: HDR 10 video signals contain up to 100x the brightness of a standard (SDR) signal, massively increasing peak brightness while retaining deep and highly detailed blacks, for an incredible viewing experience.
  • Dolby Vision (Firmware Update Available): Dolby Vision is an HDR solution that creates an even greater immersive, engaging cinematic experience in your home. Using dynamic metadata information, Dolby Vision brings scenes to life with striking highlights, deeper darks, and vibrant colors.
HDR-to-SDR Conversion: Watch 4K HDR films, even on non-HDR TVs, and enjoy additional shadow and highlight detail. Sony's HDR-to-SDR conversion intelligently scales HDR's ultra-wide brightness range into an SDR image, maintaining outstanding picture quality even with conventional SDR TV.

BT.2020 Color Spaces: Support for the new BT.2020 color spaces means access to a much wider range of colors than conventional TV signals offer. This ultra-wide color space means content creators can deliver much more saturated and realistic color from deep aquatic blues to natural greens and vibrant reds.

Deep Color (12-Bit): The Sony Blu-ray player supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the player and a TV that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a TV that does not support Deep Color.

3D-Ready: The Sony UBP-X700 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter and glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

Screen Settings: The Sony UBP-X700 Ultra-HD Blu-ray player features the following screen settings:

  • TV Type: You can select a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio for the unit's video output to match your connected Television's screen aspect ratio.
  • Screen Size: For 3D viewing, you will need to set the screen size of your 3D-compatible TV.
  • Screen Format: You can select the display configuration for a 4:3 screen picture on a 16:9 wide screen television. You can choose Full or Normal (select when connected to a TV with a wide mode function; displays a 4:3 screen picture in 16:9 aspect ratio even on a wide-screen TV) or Normal (changes the picture size to fit the screen size with the original picture aspect ratio).
  • DVD Aspect Ratio: You can select the display configuration for playback of 16:9 screen pictures on a 4:3 screen TV. You can select from Letter Box or Pan & Scan.

Video Settings: The Sony UBP-X700 Ultra-HD Blu-ray player offers the following video adjustments:

  • Picture Quality Mode: You can select from 3 preset pictures settings (Direct, Brighter, Theater, Auto, or Custom) for different lighting environment. The Custom mode lets you adjust the contrast, brightness, color, and hue manually.
  • Noise Reduction: BNR reduces the mosaic-like block noise in the picture, MNR reduces minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise), and FNR reduces the random noise appearing in a picture, while IP Content Noise Reduction enhances low-resolution web videos.

24p Output: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second the UBP-X700 will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

Cinema Conversion Mode: The Sony Ultra-HD Blu-ray player offers two Cinema Conversion Modes - (1) Auto mode automatically detects whether the material is video-based or film-based, and switches to the appropriate conversion method. (2) The Video mode is suited for video-based material and will always be selected regardless of the content.

BonusView: The BonusView feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

Q
Does anyone know if I use the Sony UBP-X700 Blu-ray player, with the Sony XBR65X900H with the Sonos ARC if the TV would passthrough the audio from the Blu-ray player and be able to output Dolby Atmos to the Sonos Arc?
[ OnFlight1978  Jul 04, 2020 ]
2 answers
A
Yes. I have Yamaha sound bar and the blue ray sound plays out very nicely
[ William  Jul 04, 2020 ]
A
From everything i've read, if the TV has EARC then it should pass ATMOS to the Sonos ARC.
[ jim  Jul 04, 2020 ]
Q
I have an older Onkyo receiver (TX SR-703). It doesn't have an HDMI input but I think it has digital coaxial. Will this player work with it?
[ Patricia  Jun 29, 2020 ]
7 answers
A
Yes, i believe so, just connect the HDMI Out 1 jack ( video/ audio) to your tv and connect the coaxial digital cable to your Onkyo receiver. It's a great player and does so much, like play SACD and 3D, good luck!
[ MICHAEL G  Jun 29, 2020 ]
A
I doubt it. The coaxial connector is normally for audio only.
[ Richard  Jun 29, 2020 ]
A
Yes the Sony has a coaxial output
[ Joseph  Jun 29, 2020 ]
A
nn it only has ahdmi onlny a in and a out
[ GARY L  Jun 29, 2020 ]
A
Patricia, yes. On your Onkyo rear panel there are two digi (yellowish) coax in jacks in upper left corner when viewed from back. On the Sony the digi coax out jack is betw. the HDMI 2 port & the Caution symbol. The digi coax is an RCA-type plug, not a screw on like on your cable coax. You'll need to configure the receiver to recognize which digi coax in jack is your CD In. If you don't have your manual, your SR703 is in Crutchfield's Discontinued section. A link to online manual is right under the "What's in the box:" title. BTW, the reviews on your SR-703 are great. Enjoy!
[ Bruce  Jun 29, 2020 ]
A
For "Audio Only," yes it will. You will have to use the HDMI directly to your TV for the video.
[ Gerard  Jun 29, 2020 ]
A
I don't believe that this will work as the digital coaxial output on this is for audio and not video. I hope this helps.
[ PETE  Jun 29, 2020 ]
Q
My plan is to hook this (Sony UBP-X700) up to a 6 year-old 720p Samsung. I'm not expecting anything beyond basic 720p quality, but my concern is whether the Sony is even compatible with my TV?
[ Mitch  Jun 23, 2020 ]
4 answers
A
The UBP-X700 only has HDMI output for video, so if your TV has an HDMI in, then it will.
[ Gerard  Jun 29, 2020 ]
A
There is a good chance it will be ok,but the 4k picture is awesome but you should be just fine.
[ Kervick  Jun 23, 2020 ]
A
I would think that would work just find. There have been no basic changes with this type of equipment for many more than 6 years. I currently have mine conected thru an Onkyo receiver. Previously, I had it directly connected to a Panasonic TC-P60GT30 with zero problems.
[ George Frank  Jun 23, 2020 ]
A
I have mine hooked up via hdmi to a 2yr old Samsung 4K Q LED and it works just fine.
[ FREDERICK  Jun 23, 2020 ]
Q
My Denon receiver is mid 2000s and does not have HDMI inputs/outputs. Is there a simple converter that would work, without degradation, to allow me to utilize this player with my receiver?

A
I do not think you will be able to use the blue-ray player if i remember it only has HDMI and there is no way to plug analog in to it. also I do not think there is an adapter not that I know of.
[ SANDY  Jun 19, 2020 ]
A
Not 100% sure. I would check Crutchfield first. I would imagine video signal would be reduced though. I'm sure Crutchfield could set you up with a new Amp!??
[ M  Jun 19, 2020 ]
A
I think there is an adapted to allow for HDMI to another type of input. I'm not sure what affect this could have on picture quality?
[ Richard  Jun 19, 2020 ]
A
I know of no device that will properly convert this signal. This is a 4K capable device that would be an even greater challenge. Conversion to coax might be possible but you would likely run into an HDPC compliance issue.
[ Cornelius  Jun 19, 2020 ]

Will you get stereo and surround sound with this?

You will get what ever sound is on the DVD or CD, on the remote you can select from the audio formats available. Most formats work with HDMI some only on coax or fiber optic outputs.

[ LARRY  May 29, 2020 ]

Yes, it outputs via HDMI and passes digital audio through so it will depend on what your AV receiver or soundbar can decode. I get Dolby Atmos and DTS-X as well as other formats. Stereo or surround modes work as well, but again depends on the receiver or soundbar setting.

[ Harry  Jun 09, 2019 ]

I am certainly no expert, but it should work ok with regular DVD's, and probably ok with Blu-Ray discs. You will probably have a problem if you want to watch a 4K disc. Regular CD's also will probably have no problem.

All of that info is detailed nicely in the "Owner's Manual".. Crutchfield wisely provides a link to the manuals for most items listed on their site.. Go to Critchfield's Sony UBP-X700 page and peruse the "Overview" section where you will find "Wat's in the box:".. Directly under "What's in the box:" will be the link to the manual.. Enjoy..

Guys, I wish I could help you with this, but I can't! Sorry! If you ask me how to set the valve gap on a early 60's straight 6 Ford, or the firing order for the British 2.25L engine used on Land Rovers, I could help you, but to be honest, for this kind of stuff-I call Crutchfield!!

The following is listed w/ the description. I have never done it but one would think it was doable.

I purchased a 2 terabyte Western Digital Passport . You pick if you want the Mac version or Pc version . The drive is already formatted in Ntfs. I have 200 movies on one of my drive . You can also connect the drive to your WiFi router with a usb 3.0 jack , choose the network icon on the Sony Blu-ray player. Now you have a media server .
[ Dale  Oct 28, 2018 ]
A
It can play videos according to the linked owners manual. I don't see the format listed specifically but FAT32 or ExFat are supported by Sony TVs. If partition size is a concern look at the network playback options and it would be less relevant.

Most DVD and Blu-ray players are not capable of playing audio red book CDs properly with the dynamic realism of even a cheaper player. So my question is, those that have purchased this player, how well does it play cdâ??s and also inserted 2-3 TB hard drive hi-res files, 96/24 or 192/24? I know if will cover any needs with hdr including Dolby vision, but I need to know if it will play everything as well, or should I keep my 15 years old Denon cd/sacd/dvd-a player? Thanks
[ David  Oct 02, 2018 ]

A
I hesitate to try to answer this as I'm more of an audiophile wanna-be. I have an Emotiva CD player that I use primarily but for multi-channel I have to use the Blu-ray with Anthem 520 receiver. My current SACD's are Tumbleweed Connection, Brothers In Arms, Pink Floyd box w/ AHM quad mix, and DSOTM Immersion box. I think they all sound wonderful. Also being somewhat of a pack rat I'd caution against getting rid of anything that's still operational.
[ John  Oct 09, 2018 ]

This unit plays MP3 and a bunch of other compressed formats & audio CD's, DVD's, Blu-Ray's and 4k discs very well. As far as I know it does not play SACD or DVD-audio discs or any of the specialty discs, but you would need to ask Sony about it. I don't have any more of those type discs anymore.

What are the differences between this one and the ubp x800?

A
I think wireless capabilities is the only thing. Check out the comparison page to confirm.
[ John  Sep 05, 2018 ]
A
The 800 is larger in size and little bit better made for me it came down to size the picture and sound will be the same
[ DENNIS  Sep 03, 2018 ]
A
I can only tell you about the Sony UBP-X700 which I am very pleased with. There is plenty of info and reviews about both on the web. After that, you decide. BTW the Sony UBP-X700 is cheaper and is upgradeable to Dolby Vision(DV) in about three minutes with a USB flash drive. The X800 does not have the DV option. I hope your question is answered.
[ LUIS A  Sep 03, 2018 ]
A
The 700 supports Dolby Vision. The 800 doesn't. The 800 has a Bluetooth transmitter that sends audio from the player to Bluetooth-compatible headphones or speakers. The 700 doesn't. The 800 has free downloadable Sony SongPAL app (available from iTunes Store and Google Play) helps connect the player to your wireless network and controls playback, and volume. Also gives you control over other compatible Sony speakers as part of a multi-room music system and is Spotify® Connect compatible. The 700 isn't. The 800 has BD-Live and BonusView support for added bonus features with compatible discs (requires external USB storage device)/ The 700 doesn't.
[ Nathan  Sep 03, 2018 ]
A
The only difference I am aware of other than the price is that the X800 will play DVD Audio.

Q
Will this mount vertically to the back of the TV?
[ Jason  Aug 16, 2018 ]
5 answers
A
Definitely not. there is no mounting option for this and the disc drawer does not have any center clip to hold the disc from falling out if mounted vertically.
[ David  Aug 17, 2018 ]
A
The unit doesn't come with any type of mounts or any brackets. You could probably make some. They would have to be external. Wouldn't recommend drilling any holes in the chassis. Hope that helps.
[ ERNEST  Aug 17, 2018 ]
A
I have no idea and I can't imagine why one would want to do that in the first place. I would worry about it working properly if it weren't horizontal. I wouldn't try it.
[ David  Aug 16, 2018 ]
A
As far as I know, I would say no. It might work, but the disc would fall out of the tray when you eject it. See if you can find a BR player that doesn't have a tray load.

Enter an answer to this question. As far as I know, it is. It was purchased new from Crutchfield. I noticed a significant difference between a 4K and a BR disc. One thing that I didn't expect was how much better this machine upgrades regular DVD's over my old BR player. The only "bad" thing about this unit is how light it is. Moves around easily, but is fine when just playing a disc. Hope this helps.
