Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Finally my 4K dream has come true. I bought Wonder Woman 4K for my test, it was fantastic.
Sony UBP-X800 - Front-panel USB port can play high-resolution digital music files from a thumb drive (not included)
The Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-ray player has a frame-and-beam chassis for less vibration.
Sony took their time to release the UBP-X800 Ultra HD Blu-ray player — they wanted to do it right. Good call. They've created a solidly built home theater component that will push your 4K Ultra HD TV to perform its best. This versatile player will serve up Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with their full 4K resolution and wide, vivid color spectrum. It also plays pretty much any other movie and music disc or digital file out there — and yep, it will even stream Netflix® in 4K.
4K Blu-ray discs with High Dynamic Range (HDR) feed your compatible TV an incredibly lifelike, vibrant picture. And the UBP-X800 is ready for them. On compatible Ultra HD TVs, you'll get deeply detailed picture contrast. We're talking the darkest and brightest content side by side in the same image.
All the top movie sound formats are supported, too. You can send three-dimensional audio formats like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X to a compatible receiver via HDMI. This gives you a home theater sound experience that's worthy of the super-crisp images you'll see on your screen.
The UBP-X800's high-grade internal digital-to-analog converter ensures all your music sounds clear and detailed. The USB port accepts thumb drives you load with music files — even lossless and uncompressed formats, including high-resolution DSD. Plus, when you connect the player to your network via Wi-Fi, it becomes the gateway to a whole-home audio system.
Sony Blu-ray players usually offer a decent variety of streaming video services. And this player even offers 4K streaming options, so you can get a better picture from Netflix and Amazon Instant Video.
Dual-band Wi-Fi gives you the strong connection needed for streaming 4K. (Keep in mind, we recommend having an internet speed of 20Mbps or faster for 4K streaming.)
Along with all the streaming video goodness, this player also turns your connected home theater speakers into a wireless music hub. Download Sony's free SongPAL™ app, and control the player from your iOS® or Android™ device. The app gives you wireless access to the music stored on your phone or a DLNA-connected server, plus streaming services like Spotify® Connect.
You can also control other compatible Sony speakers and components — all from the same SongPAL app. Listen to different songs in each room, or the same thing throughout the house. You can even stream movie or music audio from the UBP-X800 to other rooms.
The UBP-X800 built-in Bluetooth can transmit the sound of your movies, shows, and other media to a pair of Bluetooth headphones. This is perfect for late night binge-watching. You can catch all the dialogue and hear all the loud, exciting sound effects without waking everyone up.
This Sony blu-ray player is a good option if you are looking for a well built player that won't break the bank. The build quality is more robust than most players on the market today. Set up was easy; picture and sound quality are excellent.

Clean design. Smart features.
Great addition to my home theater setup
This Sony blu-ray player is a good option if you are looking for a well built player that won't break the bank. The build quality is more robust than most players on the market today. Set up was easy; picture and sound quality are excellent.
Pros: Build quality, easy set up, performance
Cons: Analog audio output would have been nice.
I bought this mainly so I could stream Spotify over my A/V system. (The operating system on my TV is too old to run the Spotify app.) I was told that this blu-ray player has the Spotify app on it. IT DOES NOT. All it has is Spotify Connect, which simply plays songs from your phone via Wi-Fi. There is no ability to access your Spotify account, playlists, etc. on screen. This is ridiculous, in light of the fact Spotify must be giving the app away to encourage subscriptions. Bad on you, Sony.

I made this mistake in the beginning of not purchasing a Sony product. I have never had a problem with a Sony product. In this DVD player is excellent and the picture quality that it puts out. It may cost you a few more dollars but it's definitely worth it.
Perfect device to accompany my new 85 inch Sony
I had purchased one of these Sony Blu-ray players a year ago exact model exact make and I was extremely happy. I ended up needing a Blu-ray player for my bedroom to replace a 20-year-old pioneer DVD player I decided to go ahead and stick with what I know works perfectly and this is the ultimate unit absolutely wonderful just remember to keep up with the firmware updates and use a strong Wi-Fi router to connect to and you will do fine I believe in Sony products
Pros: Absolutely worth it for the money and because it has a solid frame and is built better than others which are only plastic and very little metal to stabilize this is a wonderful product
Cons: You really need to keep up with the firmware updates that Sony pushes out on this product since there are many software changes with the media the DVD Blu-ray itself that you play remember this is a decoder that has to decode the DVD or Blu-ray and to have the correct software to decode you must do the firmware updates this is really not a coupon but it could be if you don't do the updates
Easy to install, very quiet,
It works like it should. Have been a Sony lover for long time and seldom disappointed.
Pros: Its Sony!!
This Sony 4k DVD is amazing. I removed the DVD player the box and attached the 4k HDMI cable and made the necessary connections to play thru my Home Theater. My Samsung curved TV has 4K & 3D capabilities and does this Sony DVD player. Both 4k and 3d dvd's play with amazing results. This is a must for the very good cost. i was able to get the DVD player on sale for $199 during a 1 day special. I would highly recommend this player to everyone looking for great quality for a very economical cost!
Pros: Great Price , great quality
The unit has great features for the money. For most users, it does everything you would want; great picture, smart features are robust enough, ease of use, built well, etc. Can't go wrong at this level. If the star rating was based on price, I'd give it five stars.
Worked right out of the box! Easy set up an excellent overall picture quality while playing Blu-ray discs.
Very nice unit, works flawlessly. Simple remote. Quiet operation.
Works perfect, 4K quality is superb, connected to a LG 75UK6570PUB via Marantz SR7012 , all apps work super fast after updates (Compared to Marantz UD5007 which was replaced by it), actually using Netflix, Amazon Video, Spotify and HD files via USB, supports all audio HD multichannel options that i tried included the ones in Netflix decoded by the Marantz. One decision making was the capability to read DVD Audio and SACD. Disk loading (BD 4K, BD standard, SACD, CD, DVD, DVD Audio) is very fast too. Remote is OK, no analog or other digital output besides HDMI (not a problem in my case) but if you want to connect it to older devices this will be a problem. Feels heavy and very good quality construction, took me some time to get used to no info on the front of the device (only on TV screen display). RECOMENDED..!
Pros: Excellent quality and construction. Reads SACD and DVD Audio (besides many other formats) Looks sleek and minimalist (just a green led on the front). Super fast disk load.
Cons: No analog outputs (not a problem if all your devices works via HDMI). No display on the front, you need your TV on for all the functions (you can get used to it after some time)
Great product excellent service from Crutchfield I have no complaints. Contemplated the x700 simply for the Dolby Vision but in my opinion DV is over blown for the lack of supporting movies out there. The x800 fits my needs.
Pros: nice build quality long list of features
I have now had problems with 2 of these players in 2 months. In BOTH cases the player completely freezes up when playing a disc. The only way to get a disc out or get the player to respond is to unplug it and cycle it. Unacceptable. I did more research on this player and it seems to becoming a more common problem. One person has posted that it is due to the most recent firmware update. I suppose you could just not do the update, but it is usually important for content reasons to do it. I will be calling Crutchfield and asking for a new player, however, I'm not getting another Sony product. Buyer beware!
After ordering 2 of these units (and returning BOTH) it appears they are incompatible with the newer Sony Bravia 4K TV's and Sony AV receivers, I was unable to connect to or display ('no signal found') from either...I'd stay away from the Sony 4K BD players for now. The only support I could find from Sony refers to a 'potential' software update, delivery date unknown, which even if available it would not do much for you when can't even display/see the set-up menu! It also appears Crutchfield tech support has no experience with this issue, unfortunately. Hopefully now they DO.
Cons: The player is unusable in it's current form. Search other products before bothering with this player.
Connects with DNLA smoothly . Great picture quality and even better sound quality. Looks beautiful. Only had 1 month so far.
Cons: None yet.
Arrived in good condition and works well and was easy to set up. I got good advice on this from the Crutchfield rep, works great with my Sonos system also.
This is a great Blu-Ray player. Sound was great through the surround system and the picture was also very good. No issues with this equipment. Easy to connect to the surround system, really was a simple plug and play. I should have replaced my DVD player long ago. It was a five year old Sony.
DVD has a great picture and sound. Excellent addition to my 4k ultra hdr tv
Pros: excellent product
Works great Also like that the door is hidden.
Overall the UBP-X800 works extremely well. The picture and sound quality exceed expectations. The reason for only four stars is there is no standalone application remote control for the unit that works on the Android or Apple IOS. My setup has the equipment behind me in a closet in my media room. The only apps I found assume you are using a Sony TV. My Yamaha receiver and Yamaha Blue-Ray player can be controlled off my iPad. Not having this capability makes the streaming features hard to use, I have to turn around and point the hand held remote at the unit. I was surprised that there was no streaming application for Play Station VUE, especially since this is a Sony product. If this app was there I could replace my Roku device.
Pros: Excellent picture Excellent sound Well built
Cons: No app remote control over the network No Play Station VUE streaming app
Nice universal disc player at a nice price. Wish it had a display for basic function and media info.
Purchased as a gift for a family member and he's satisfied with the selection. Haven't had the chance to see the picture quality as of yet, only listening to CDs.
Easy set up, good picture, and has a manual with it. (today it seems we always have to download one) . I have a few things to set up and find out about it like changing a setting to bit sound output in order to get Dolby Atmos but I will figure that all out quickly.
Pros: Easy set up
Easy set up.
Did my research as this is supporting a well designed atmos home theater. At first I couldn't get a display, troubleshooting was actually helpful as the suggestion was to reduce the resolution to the minimum. Voila, now I can get into the setup menu and see what's going on. Turns out I had an older hdmi cable that wouldn't support higher resolution, with that swapped the tv and the ubp had a chat without my input and automatically upgraded the resolution. I had new hdmi cables on hand but hadn't bothered with the one in the wall. So, the unit will upscale but won't downscale. If you have hdmi cables that are more than 2 years old think about ordering new ones. In this case my cable signal got an improvement as well. Crutchfield was great as always, I chatted with an advisor before purchasing and used my rewards points towards the purchase. My concern was that they would go on super sale but with the 60 day price guarantee no worries. Picture is great, even an upconverted blu ray is theater quality. Now trying to figure out which DVDs to swap out for 4k, not enough difference to justify replacing blu rays unless for the hi def audio.
Pros: Picture quality
Cons: Default resolution may leave you with no display if you have older cables
love my new Blu-ray player
Pros: easy to use
I have had the Blu-ray player for just a few days. Everything is working as expected beautiful picture, great sound.
Purchased Sony mostly for the Dolby Atmos and DTS-X formats. Real easy to set up, one cable to my receiver, and a flick of a setting in the menu changed the PCM over to bitstream. Had Dolby Atmos coming in on the movie. 13 HOURS first time played. DTS-X was playing in a Demo. Excellent picture on my Panasonic plasma TV in 1080. Price was even good. Recommend this player from Crutchfield.
Pros: . Easy setup and good picture.
If you find today's anonymous-looking plastic boxes disheartening and, of course, want top-notch performance, this is the player to get. Some blu ray players weigh under two pounds; this weighs over six. And the mechanically-identical UBP-X1000ES comes with a three-year warranty, so you can tell they figure on this device holding up for a good while. The faceplate is just about featureless, but the textured metal case looks better in real life than in photos. Both video and audio performance are Oppo-level excellent, and the lack of a built-in display is no big deal, as long as you've got it connected to a screen. As for set-up, it's no deal-breaker, but it's not as transparent as it should be. For instance, it takes a lot of random hunting through sequences of screens to key in a different wifi password, and the manual seems to show that a little black square is the key to restoring factory defaults, without telling you what you actually need to do. Another quibble: the remote control is cheap and generic looking. But everything works well, and should continue to for years. Four and a half stars.
Pros: Mechanical integrity, performance
Cons: On-screen interface could be more thoughtful
Nice player, tested with Planet Earth 4K on my 4k Samsung 55, easy setup, streamed Amazon, others fine. See how it holds up for the next few months.
Quality product, like the ability to stream Netflix and amazon prime.
Well built. Has everything you need from a dvd player.
Decided to replace my 2010 Blu-ray player. It is super easy to hook up and a lot quieter. I swear of the picture quality is better and I like the quick on. I decided to go with the heavier model and I'm glad I did, good looking and works well.
Pros: Easy to hook up.
Everything I expected from Sony and more. Vibrant colors with 4K Blu-ray Disc.
This unit is a remarkable improvement over my 4 year old Sony DVD player. The 4k resolution is outstanding. I am able to obtain streaming services extremely quickly without any delay.. I also played my first SACD disc and was surprised at the enhanced sound experience. It really is a very multipurpose piece of electronics with outstanding building quality and performance.
Pros: solid build, quiet operation, quickly accesses streaming services, excellent picture withe 4k content
Cons: none so far
I haven't found anything that I don't like in this player! It has a great, clean look. I think it's a good value for the price. The mechanical parts could be a bit more robust, but with proper care, I think it will last quite well. The chassis size fits very nicely into my entertainment center and I prefer the nice square shape. Some of the competing products have a curve to them that makes them ungainly.
I have always bought ALL of my electronics from Crutchfield for my most dearest HT system. Last year I bought SONY UBP-X800 and connected it to my 3-4 years told Marantz Receiver ( not 4K but upscale to 4K) , which in turn connects to SONY Projector VPLHW55ES ( not 4K). I am able to use the BD,DVD and SACDs without any issues, however streaming Netflix and Amazon prime movies have been a nightmare. I have to reset the player a number of times make it to work but then its no guarantee as it suddenly freezes and turns off. I was noticing this from the very beginning after purchase but thought it may be because of HDMI cable and other interference from other devise connected to the Marantz. I isolated and operate just the X800 player but of no avail, Has anyone experienced the same during streaming?
Pros: Excellent picture and BD 4K experience. Fantastic Audio with SACD and DSD.
Cons: Streaming woes. Freezing and suddenly turns off.
When I installed UBP-X800 - replacing BDP-S6500 -- I was astounded that three "downloads" took place. These "upgraded" the total picture quality on my 5 speaker system; they improved (and added to) the sound systems, AND connected to my internet system, which brings my computer to the Big screen! We tend to see discs from the Library -- and even the "oldies" have an improved picture. Now, mind you, I have a 55" 4K Sony TV -- and everything looks better and sounds better. I commend it to you
I recently upgraded my projector to 4k and wanted a device to play 4k DVD's and stream 4k from apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. After researching my options, I decided this was my best option. It is a very well built unit and delivers all I need. Easy to setup and configure to my needs. I have cut the cord and also went with Directv Now, which Sony does not currently support the app. Needed to get a Roku 4k to support this.
Pros: Native 4k Easy to setup, configure, and use Great picture Smart device supporting 4k apps such as Netflix and Prime
Cons: No support for Directv Now app
Originally bought to replace my 20 year old...Technics DVD Audio-A-10 cause she wont play the gold layered DVD movies,weird....plays all other discs.Love my Technics!!!! Now the SONY....nice weight..nice build AWESOME player ,perfect connections.EASY menu screens,OUTSTANDING audio reproduction just listen to some Steely Dan....then you to will know.JAZZ On and may the FORCE BE WITH YOU.
Built like a tank; plays every silver disc format except DVD Audio; connects wirelessly to my Sony headphones.
easy set-up, great response to input.
Well pleased, this is my second unit, purchased for TV in my family room. First one is on an LG OLED so is obviously a better picture, new one is on three year old Visio 4-K TV but still impressive.
I am a sony person, so it is no surprise that this is a great blu ray player. Needed to upgrade to go with the other new equipment. Color and picture are great. Crutchfield came through again with great service and delivery. Thanks.
This was the second 800 I purchased, it just plays everything I insert in it. Very well built sturdy and no issues that frustrate !
Pros: Easy set up, plays what you feed it every time.
Giving it 4 stars only because I have not used it very much. I recently added a 4k TV to my "man room" and wanted to have the ability to watch movies in my own domain while the wife is watching other stuff in the family room with the HT set up. Have listened to CD's, watched a movie, and used the built-in apps for YouTube music videos, and could not ask for more from anything at this price point. I could not justify another Cambridge, because of its limited use, but I am very satisfied with this player. Definitely recommended.
Pros: Very versatile player. Have used it for DVD, Blu-ray, and 4k playback and it works flawlessly. CD and online apps are very good as well. A great choice for a really good player at a reasonable price.
Cons: None so far.
Easy to use and nice interface. Connects much faster than my 4 yr old top of the line Denon Blu-Ray
OK Works Great.
Excellent value if you don't need or want Dolby Vision. Has an all-metal chassis, which is increasingly rare in units selling for less than $500.
So far so good. Works as expected. Picture quality is crisp and beautiful. Hopefully, my last Blu-Ray player I'll need. Solidly built and heavy.
Pros: Easy to install and setup.
Cons: Remote has no backlight.
We love Sony electronics around here
Got Sony UBP-X800 player in December 2017. Played CD's through my Denon AVR S720W without issues. Had an older TV at the time. Just got a new 4K HD Smart TV. Sadly the Sony player's video output is not seen by the TV via the TV's HDMI input with ARC and the setting of Full UHD color is enabled with the TV. The TV has settings for Full UHD "On" for all 5 HDMI inputs (including the HDMI input 1 with ARC functionality). Contacted Vizio tech support (55" P series TV). Went over settings galore. Upgraded cables. Still no worky. They kept saying (as a test) to try using another HD device on the HDMI ARC port not getting the video signal from the Sony. Got hold of a Samsung UBD-M8500 DVD HD Blu-Ray player, plugged it in and its signal was seen perfectly fine on the TV's HDMI port w/ ARC (#1) with Full UHD Color setting on. Contacted Sony custr service. After much back and forth, I procured on my own, same model Sony player. It presented the same fail on the HDMI port w/ ARC; when Full UHD color is set to on. Sony eventually informed me: "Our apologies for the inconvenience that this may have caused. In this case, a firmware update is scheduled to be released to resolve the issue. We cannot provide a specific date about this information but you can always check our website." So no ARC cabling for me with player. Using other port. More clunky interface as a result. Check right off for you that Full UHD color is good with your TV/DVD player - It was too late for me.
Pros: Plays audio CD's well.
Cons: Not playing nice with my TV on ARC. Sony says firmware fix coming at some undetermined time.
Easy to use, well built, nice and heavy. I had the X700 and sent it back. It weighed about 1 pound and felt very cheap. And I LOVE this company. I will buy all my electronic needs from them in the future. Outstanding customer service, technical support, live chat product advice etc.
Pros: Easy to use, well built, nice and heavy. I had the X700 and sent it back. It weighed about 1 pound and felt very cheap.
Cons: no display
Great picture good product used it a few times can't wait to get more 4K DVDs
Pros: Easy to set up
Read the on site review of this unit and bought it. The review was spot on. The wife flipped through the manual and found she could run all her devices through its interface. It even has a red button for Netflix. Fast loading of disc's. First thing I did was pop in a Blu Ray of Avatar to see the upgrade to 4K on the new Samsung 65". Simply amazing. Technology gets better, prices keep dropping, consumers win.
Works great, needs dobly vision but other than that ????
Cons: Dobly vision
bought the Sony ubp-x800 a few days ago, very happy so far. picture and sound are quality are exelint, Dolby atmos sound is Awsom. build quality is solid, it does not feel light and cheap like the other units I looked at.very good deal at that price range, I highly recommend it
Pros: great picture and sound, and build quality
Cons: none so far
Great and nice simple system. I like the style it has
Excellent product. Sony best
One of few remaining platforms for SACD, esp with native DSD and DSD converted to PCM digital out. CD with DSEE is impressive.
This product is built to a standard of "first class". And it's performance is every bit as good as it's build quality. Picture and sound are both outstanding. Very simple in design and function, yet packed full of state-of-the-art technology. Fast disc loading. Very quiet machine, you can barely hear the disc spinning. Remote is nice and small and is very simple to operate. A sleek, solid performing unit. What more can you ask for! Spend the extra money and buy a quality product. I am amazed at what you get for only this amount of money.
Pros: Build quality. Simple and elegant design. Outstanding performance in both audio and video.
Cons: Does not support Dolby Vision. For those who want traditional, analog RCA outputs, there aren't any (but really, the HDMI provides a true digital output and your AVR or Preamp/Processor should have quality DACs on board).
I have a owns several different Sony Blu-ray players when I purchase the X8OO series, I read reviews from high End Audio / video stereo magazines. Prior to receiving my purchase I am downloaded the manual and read that and review the specs. This product I would give an A+ to the sound quality is amazing, the picture quality is amazing. I do not have a 4K television however I know it will upscale my Blu-ray disc. At this point I am more concerned about the sound quality and since I select uncompress sound it knocked me off my feet. I wanted the Bluetooth headphone connection because I do watch films late at night. I live in an apartment so it's very important that my 3000 Watt stereo system does not come on at 2 o'clock in the morning. I upgraded all my HDMI cable's to version 2.2 so I get better fast speed transfer. I was not important or concerned about streaming on this unit as I have AppleTV and Roku ultra premium for streaming. If anyone is concerned whether this is a goodbuy or purchase, go for it you will not be disappointed I noticed that the model number is X 800/B. I read of a major issue in the original X 800 so I'm glad that I have the revised version of this model.
Pros: This product lives up to all the advertisement that Sony said
Cons: I wish there was a vegetable display in the front of the machine showing you the time and channels that are being used and what mode you were in. Without pressing display
Wonderful 4k DVD player. The 4k picture on my Sony 4k tv is excellent. I was surprised at how good the player upgrades regular 1020 blu-ray to almost 4k quality. The sound quality on my surround sound system is outstanding.
A wonderful blu-ray player.
Pros: Clear picture. Syncs well with my Sony TV.
Cons: My first one of these failed to work after I upgraded the software. So my advise would be: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I love this new player. The picture is amazing, it's super easy to use, the remote is a huge improvement over my old one. It is obviously built like a tank so I have full confidence it will hold up for a long time. One issue I have is the audio outputs. I run a Martin Logan sound bar which has optical inputs. The Sony only has HDMI and coax outs. I have to get my sound through the TV HDMI connection. So much for hooking up surround sound. I'm inclined to think Sony and Martin Logan could have done better in their hookups.
Pros: Great picture, ease of use, fine remote.
Cons: Inadequate audio outs may not work with certain gear.
Purchased end of 2017 holiday period at a much lower price. Never able to connect to internet. Worked with great timely Crutchfield support. Diagnosis was probably a faulty Network Interface Card (NIC). Thank you Crutchfield. Put this one on Sony quality.
Cons: Overall Setup is clumsy - compared to other mfg.
Just got it-so far so good. I wish it had some basic controls on the unit itself.
This is my 2nd player. The first one kept freezing up with blue screen or TV would say no signal or disc would not read. And the only way to restart it was to unplug it. Fun. Sony was no help , they just would read down a list and you could not understand them (non USA help). Crutchfield was great and quickly sent a replacement. Because of wonderful reviews just thought I got a lemon. Well my 2nd unit not much better, no blue screens but still freezes up constantly on what ever screen it is on. Fun again unplugging all the time, so I purchased a remote power outlet just for this unit. Research now on this player has a lot of unhappy Sony consumers with same problems. I would avoid purchase of this player. Guess the days of all Sony products being top notch are long gone IMHO.
Pros: Good picture when it works.
Cons: Full of bugs and a headache to use.
Purchased this to replace a less expensive Sony model. I read through reviews before deciding on this model. Its a simple setup and, as others have stated, very fast to load a disc. I am pleased with it so far and have no issue going it 5 stars. I have this running in an enclosed cabinet so I cant comment on noise. It is wide so be sure to measure your intended location carefully as the buttons are on the very edge of the face.
Excelente producto, servicio en español a otro nivel, ademas de el envio super rapido, crutchfield 10/10
Solid build, fast operation, and great picture & sound.
Since I purchased a 4K Ultra Sony TV from Crutchfield, I decided to compliment it with the UBP-X800 and I am glad I did. Great product from Sony and a major improvement over the regular blue ray format!
Bought this about two months ago and was working fine. Now I keep getting a Google 400 error that cannot be resolved when watching YouTube only. I'm going to try to return it and get something less troublesome.
Pros: Price seemed right but I'd pay more for a unit that can stream YouTube.
Cons: You-tube crash with no plution to 400 error made this purchase a big mistake.Crutchfield response on 4/2/2018 Thomas, we're sorry you're having issues with your blu-ray player. Whenever you encounter a problem with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, please contact our Tech Support team. They can help you solve the problem or set up a return within 60 days of purchase. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
This player is larger and heavier than anticipated...but that's a good thing! The 4K movies load fast and the picture is awesome. The player itself is an easy setup and apps can run through it as well. Paired this with a Sony 4K TV and the two work great together. Price, easy setup, and player reliability were points taken and the deciding factor to purchase.
Pros: Easy setup Ease of use Price
This is very good ultra high def blu-ray player that met all my requirements such as build quality, sound, picture, cost, and aesthetics. Disk loading is fast and the disc drive itself is very quiet. Two HDMI out ports if you chose to go straight to TV and the other to an AVR. You have several options at your disposal in regard to it's upscaling capabilities, and boy they're quite good. Setup was a breeze, and you have the ability to update firmware for bug fixes and/or performance enhancements. Remote is pretty simple and button lay out is well positioned, but with my setup I use a harmony to control everything. The one puzzling thing about this player is Sony chose not to have a front panel readout display. It would have been nice to have the option of bright, dim or off setting for that. A detachable power cord would have been nice as well, but these are minor bites that really don't take anything from this being the best bang for buck player.
Pros: Build quality, Apps, Video and Sound features, and upscaling of non-4K sources
Cons: No front panel display on player
Very good BR player. It replaced an old Pioneer BDP. Easy to use and setup. Easy to update the firmware.
Pros: Price (it was on sale). 4K. Easy to use.
I was pleasantly surprised at the weight - this thing is built like a tank. 4K movies look awesome and even standard Blu-Rays look better with the X800. Setup was simple and load times are fast. I have only had it for two weeks, but so far I have been very pleased and would recommend it.
Over the years I can't count the number of VCR, DVD, and then Blue Ray players I've owned. The last two Blue Ray players were nothing but trouble even though major brands and not cheap ones. I have to say this Sony UBP-X800 is the best I've ever had. It has worked flawlessly and connected to my 4k TV with no troubles at all. The TV is not a Sony either. I would recommend this player to anyone, and the price is reasonable.
Pros: Easy setup, loads quickly, and has played every DVD and Blue Ray disk I have so far.
Cons: no on screen display for music cd's
This exceeded all my requirements
Easy setup. Boots up quickly. High-quality images regardless of media: old DVDs are upscaled to a pretty vivid images. Blu-ray movies look significantly improved and 4K movies are spectacular. I also have a number of Blu-Ray and DVD audio discs that sound great in five channels. I have not added speakers 6 and 7 for Atmos yet, but I expect those results to be equally impressive.
Pros: Easy setup, boots up quickly. High-quality picture
Cons: I'd rather the display be on the unit rather than the TV screen.
I bought this specifically for my SACDs. As advertised. It plays everything cd, dvd blue ray sacd.. All expectations met.
Pros: plug it in turn it on, fast delivery
Great 4K player at affordable price. Cosmetically looks great
Pros: Great 4K player at affordable price
This is a great performing player with solid build quality. It has more features than I will likely use but you never know. I am also OK without the optical output as I have an older Denon HT receiver with only one optical input (connected to my new OLED TV optical output). I use the HDMI connection which is perfect. Since I already have a quality CD changer I would only use the Sony as a secondary player, should my media not be compatible in the changer. For this purpose the digital output to my receiver is sufficient for audio only. Regarding the picture the up-scaling from conventional DVDs is great. I haven't had a chance to try any UHD Blu-rays yet but looking forward to it. As many reviews say this unit strikes a wonderful balance between price and performance.
We located this player in a room that has sketchy WiFi from the house. After hard wiring with a data cable directly to the router- works beautifully!! 4K content streams with ease. Love the picture (Epson 4K projector). So far,so good!!
Pros: Picture, sound, easy to use
Cons: Software update took some time (...may have been our WiFi strength). Streams well with data cable.
Great product especially with Sony Bravia TV.
Pros: easy set up
Excellent Player. Looks great and appears to be very well put together. Remote is simple and efficient. It was purchased to experience 4K with new LG OLED and works well, I was really surprised at the level of upgrading it offers my regular Blue Ray Discs. Particularly the better quality Blu Rays (3:10 to Yuma, Dark Night, etc.) The detail and clarity is exceptional. Sound from the Bose Sound Bar seems cleaner and more defined as well. So far a great purchase at a very reasonable price.
Works great - but not so well with older tvs/receivers that don't have the latest connection technology. But we'll work around that.
Simple set up and great price for a great performance by Blu-ray Player.
Pros: Simple setup, fast loading, solid player
Cons: Hard to find Bitstream passthrough in settings. To enjoy Bitstream (Dolby Atmos / DTS) signals, set (BD Audio Mix Setting) to (off) and (Digital Audio Output) to (auto).
Extremely pleased with the Sony UBP-800. Would buy again. I also purchased the Sony UBP-X800 blu-ray player to drive the Sony 900E display. One of the things I struggled with was how to set them up so that I could get the best picture for older and lower resolution DVDs, i.e. which device was to do how much upscaling. I found a marked improvement if I let the X 800 player upscale to 1080p and let the TV do the upscaling from 1080p to 4K. So the 900E's HDMI format was set to "Enhanced format" on the HDMI 2 input connection and the X800's 4K upscaling was set to "Auto 1" for the HDMI out. (HDMI inputs 2 and 3 on the 900E apparently support the higher bandwidths required for 4K transfers from a player so they are the best choice even if you don't have any 4K disks yet.) What happens with Auto 1 when you are playing a DVD with lower resolution than 1080p (Have Gun Will Travel, e.g.) is that the X800 will upscale to 1080p before it outputs the HDMI signal. This means the 900E will do the upscaling from 1080p to 4K. This gave the best results from both devices and the over all best picture results. It's not surprising to me that the player would have the best algorithms for upscaling older DVDs. That would be one of its differentiators in its market place. By letting the player upscale to 1080p it also offloads processing from the 900E which is a good thing. It took me a lot of hours to get this all figured out so I hope others might f
Pros: Does an excellent job of upscaling to 1080p for the Sony 900E The 900E can take the image the rest of the way to 4K resolution.
Cons: No on-board display for tracks, etc.
Does an excellent job easy to setup.
I have now completed my new system. The new Sony tv, new Sony sound bar with wireless speakers and the new Sony 4k dvd player. This unit puts out a fantastic picture, sound and control. No problems at all, and set up was a breeze. It is great using a complete Sony system that is really easy to use and of course looks great.
Pros: Thank you Crutchfield for everything, to many pros to least.
Has everything I need and looks good. For an average user this is more than you need and has internet connections so the updates are quick and easy. I did not research DVD players but I know that whatever Crutchfield has for sale it will never be a disappointment and it was perfect for my needs.
So far so good. Player installed latest firmware and connected to TV with ease. Picture is great. Feels sturdy. Great price when on sale. I know it has way more functions than I'll ever use.
Pros: Good price when on sale
Cons: Little slow to boot up if not using the sleep mode (minor issue)
Great Sony quality. Straight forward set up. It's connected to Sony's 4K Bravia tv and delivers outstanding picture quality with both 4K and standard Blu-ray dvds.
Pros: Easy setup, great DTS sound. Quite a few smart apps to choose from. Fairly quick dvd loading. A good choice.
Cons: None so far on performance. A front display would help.
Easy to connect (HDMI to TV & power cord). Quiet operation loading/opening/closing. Plays DVD's and CD's as advertised. Still working on all the "bells and whistles" of internet, etc. Bought it to pair Bluetooth with my new Bose Revolve+ portable speaker. Still haven't figured out how to do it without my TV/Bose soundbar being on. Always depended on Sony quality and believe I have another winner here. As others have noted, lack of display annoys me slightly. Need more than a tiny light to tell me what's happening.
Pros: Easy set up; quiet operation; great picture
Cons: No front display
Extreme pleased with this purchase. Received it double boxed and it arrived 1 day ahead of schedule. Hooked it up and went through the setup screens with NO ISSUES. It detected both of the wifi networks in the house and two of my adjacent neighbors too. Entered the password and it proceeded in telling me there way a firmware update and it downloaded and installed it very fast. It rebooted the player and all was well. The playback video quality is just great. I have no complaints. Razor sharp. No color issues. No motion issues. You Tube app looks good. Couldn't afford an Oppo, but this player is a close second. SACD audio decent, too. Very pleased with this purchase and Crutchfield.
Pros: Weight. Like the styling, simple. Easy, quick setup. Delivers better than expected results. Manual. Remote
Cons: Haven't found any issues that annoy me.
Great value from Crutchfield. Player performance is great. My only complaint is that there is no display on front of unit. Must use tv as display if needed.
For the price plus the free shipping this is a bargain. Plays everything except VHS tapes I have in my library. As others noted it doesn't have a display on the front. Not that big of a sacrifice when you look at the overall build quality. The video performance is stunning and the sound quality is as well. You can spend more, but consider the next cool thing is just a few years away.
Pros: Stunning Picture and sound at a nice price. Build quality
Cons: None at this price
Very well made , remote easy to use , fast loading
Pros: Great price
I've only had this a few weeks, but love the features and it looks great on my new 4K tv... I'm quite happy with Crutchfield's recommendation
1st 4K UHD BD player, and so far I am impressed. It is super fast to load and produces accurate color and beautiful images. This is replacing my PS4 as our player and I have long abandoned Samsung's video players. Got tired of them always buffering and skipping. This Sony player works awesome and integrates so well with our 930e TV. Don't use the apps, because we have an appletv 4K and if we want we would use the TV's apps. I actually appreciate the lack of a screen on the player. I don't want the distraction of the lights from the player right in my view. So glad I picked up this model. Would hope it received a Dolby Vision update but doubt it will. Other than that. Thumbs up.
Pros: Image quality. Minimalist approach. Fast loading.
Cons: No Dolby Vision.
Best DVD for the Price ... yes there are more expensive Sony products, but this player is just excellent.
Pros: Fast and easy set up ... great color ... blacks are outstanding . Great service from Crutchfield as usual with very fast delivery ... staff ... 2 thumbs up
Cons: Can't really think of any ...
Excellent product, it works very well And is simple
It is odd how DVD and BluRay players have become worse over the years. I would expect them to be trouble free by now - how difficult can it be to play a disk after so many decades? Despite being high-end and made in 2017, the Sony UBP-X800 still suffers many of the problems I have had with various players over the last 10 years. For example, it won't play our "A Christmas Story" DVD, it had trouble updating over the internet despite claiming to be connected, its power-on/off combined with opening and closing of the tray is not what I would expect (taking a disk out and hitting the power button should result in the tray closing and the unit shutting down, but it doesn't). Despite all of that, I am giving it 4 stars because it is faster than many recent models I own, is flawless (as best I can tell so far) with 4K HDR, and has a lot of internet features.
Very fast response and well built.
Pros: Smooth and quick operation well built. Heavy
I have purchased two and I am very pleased with the performance, it gives a great picture. I would recommend this player to any one.
Pros: Ease of use and setup was quick.
Great value for features including the ability to play SACD and DVD Audio disks. Easy setup to integrate with your home theatre system. Only negative is no front display readout, and the power and open/close buttons are to see. I use the remote rather than this buttons.
For the past few months, I have been totally updating my audio/video system. The Sony UBP-X800 completes the puzzle.. Our components include a Sony XBR-55X930E television, Onkyo TXNR656 4k receiver, Roku 4k Ultra and Tivo Bolt 4k. (All components, with the exception of the DVD, are hardwired to our modem via ethernet cables. Set up took less than five (5) minutes as we had a bluray player already connected. Only connections needed were the HDMI cable and the power cord. If you have searched for lists of the best 4k DVD titles currently available, you will see that Planet Earth II is at the top of virtually every list. We waited until dark so the viewing room had minimal light and spaced our seating to distance recommended by Sony. Planet Earth II 4k was unlike anything we have ever seen! The detail, dynamic range and gamut of the picture were fantastic. We have been watching bluray movies that were upscaled by the Sony television and thought they were spectacular. Well, this Sony DVD put them to shame. Up next are the 4k anniversary editions of 'ET' and 'Close Encounters...' Now an added bonus. About 5 years ago, our SACD DVD died so I have been unable to play any of our CDs in that format. I loaded Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' and cranked up the volume. Sound began bouncing around all over the room. (If you have not heard SACD before, get this recording if you have a surround sound set up and send me a 'Thank you note.' Bot
Pros: Icing on the cake! Just be sure you have a 4k television capable of doing this player justice.
Just connected the 4K player and found the unit to operate very smooth and quiet... This is the first of my six Sony players NOT to provide a digital readout on the front panel and certainly would have preferred the feature to have been included in the original design, even for a small up-charge... The remote is basic at best and I find myself often hitting the wrong buttons (An enhanced, illuminated remote is long over due in the Sony line.) That said, I'm quite pleased with the overall operation and responsiveness..!
Pros: Solid build and smooth operation at a fair price...
Cons: Basic remote and the unit lacks Dolby Vision support...
Very Nice 4K Blu-ray player. works really well with my new Sony 75 inch TV and Denon AVR.
Pros: Easy to use good price great video from both standard & 4k Blu-rays Nice that it syncs easily with other Sony products.
Only had this unit for about a week now. Great picture and controls are easy to understand/navigate on the remote. Having some minor issues with the Bluetooth connectivity and updating the software but I'm sure I just need to read through the literature to trouble shoot.
Pros: Picture and remote control. Nice that it syncs easily with other Sony products.
Cons: No fiber optic output for audio. Which is minor if you have a newer receiver as you can use the HDMI audio output. Older units can use the digital coaxial output. Also Bluetooth cannot find my iPhone but it might be an iPhone issue. Also, when updating the WiFi won't connext to the server even though it's connected to the WiFi and internet other apps such as Pandora.
The Sony ubp-x800 is a perfect match for my Sony XBR 65 900E. The Crutcfield adviser streamlined my evaluation, and it arrived early. Crutchfield's tech support is top notch, This is why Crutchfield is my go to first, for all my audio /video needs. Joe Goterch
Purchased during a sale so the price was excellent. So far, after an initial lockup that required a power reset, the unit has worked flawlessly. Excellent build quality and fast response. Hoping for updates to some of the apps to consistently allow streaming of DD+, 4k and HDR.
Pros: Quality, speed, ease of use
Cons: No Dolby Vision - waiting on some app updates (fingers crossed).
This makes such a difference in viewing your dvd's. The colors pop on the screen. I have a Sony 4K tv now. And can't wait to upgrade to an OLED to really use this to it's utmost capabilities. For the price. nothing compares.
Pros: Easy set up Bright colors Picture quality
Cons: None as of yet.
Got this for the 4K features, but also for its SACD/DVD-Audio capabilities. Had some issues during set up,( took 8 tries over 2 days to finally update firmware ,froze completely twice, had to unplug to turn off). Then worked great for 4 days. Fifth day, tv said no source connected. Tried different input on receiver, same thing. Tried Roku in both inputs and all ok. Replaced brand new hdmi cables with older ones and got a picture and sound to tv, but now won't play the surround layer on SACD's. My old Sony UHP-H1 works perfectly but no 4K. I will try one more, maybe this is just a bad unit.
Pros: 4K, HDR, SACD DVD-Audio capabilities
Cons: Doesn't work
This is meant to replace an old SONY blu-ray player serving as a DLNA media player. I am disappointed that SONY has discontinued the support of chapter marks in MKV video files. I guess I will keep using the old player.
Haven't really tested the unit,....... However my install is behind closed cabinet (No IR) and prefer single wifi remote for all AV functions. All my music library is via iTunes so best controller for system operation is Ipad/Iphone. Unfortunately in May 2017 Sony dropped its Apple support for their remote app "Sideview" due to competition from Apple in multiple venues. They still support their Android version but not apple. There is no timeline for a replacement and third party Apple apps that relied on Sideview protocols do not work anymore. May need to return the unit for a replacement Blu Ray that has apple remote support.
This is an excellent blu-ray player. For years I used a Playstation 3 as my blu-ray player because the video quality was so much better than any of the others I'd seen. Combined with the Sony XBR X900E TV, this player produces a really beautiful picture. Have not tried any 4K discs yet, but expect even better results.
Pros: Excellent picture. Easy setup.
EL DVD SONY UBP-X800 FUNCIONA PERFECTAMENTE BIEN,FACIL DE OPERAR.ESTOY CONTENTO CON LA COMPRA
Pros: ADEMAS DE REPRODUCIR los blu ray 4k tambien reproduce los dvd audio y los SACD.
Not perfect, but very close. And the nearly 50% price reductions make it a compelling choice. This is a nice full 17 inch wide component with some weight to it and solid build quality, except for the chintzy little USB cover. It loads and plays BD and DVD quickly and flawlessly. I only have a 1080P plasma, so no comment on 4K, UHD, HDR, etc. Network connections easy to set up and were fast but I cannot tell if it connected to my 2.4 or 5ghz wifi connections of a Netgear Orbi (both frequencies use the same SSID). The network app (DLNA-Like) that connects to other LAN devices seems inflexible. The standard Netflix, Amazon, Hulu apps all work well, load very fast. I had to upgrade firmware to get Atmos to work. Had one HDMI handshake issue. (I run thru a Denon Receiver) Forums told me to turn HDMI Deep Color off. No issues since then. I found it a delight to cast YouTube from a tablet to the Sony and Display...without any other devices such as Chromecast.
Pros: Solid build quality, Flawless BD Playback. Loads disks fast. Streaming connections are easy and fast. Retains 3d if important to you. Plays SACD and DVD-Audio as well.
Cons: No display on front of unit. IR window too far right and cabinet can get in way. Tray too far left and can hit cabinet door. Needs a better DLNA app.
This is the second unit that I am reviewing as the first was a complete nightmare. Screen would go black then back on then off again repeatedly while trying to set it up. Called tech support and went through the usual diagnosis ( settings ,cables, etc.) Determined a possible HDMI port issue, and sent it back for a replacement. Received new one in short order and same issue just not as bad. The movies and apps play fine and do not black out or freeze just happens while on the home screen and in settings screen? Will keep it and hope it doesn't get worse or quit all together. Hooked up through a Onkyo 810 and ends at a Sony XBR-75X850E all via Mediabridge high speed HDMI cables.
Pros: Nice build (beefy)
Cons: Issues with HDMI ports (possible)
This is a really nice product. Well, it's a Sony and rarely does Sony disappoint. Very nice picture quality. Play back is absolutely flawless and very, very easy set up. Wi-Fi was a sinch . Highly recommended.
I had been looking for a 4K player to match up to my Samsung 4K TV and Denon receiver for a while but did not feel like spending a lot on a Denon Blu-ray player that didn't even support 4K content. I did the research and the Sony UBP-X800 caught my attention because of an unbeatable price/quality ratio! It was marked down which is excellent value for money and I put it on my wishlist, a couple of days later I got an even better offer in my email. Ultimately I think I got a steal! The player is awesome, after watching mainly on-line content and the odd Blu-ray via a Playstation 3 the difference in audio and video quality is stunning, even with regular Blu-ray disks. I have yet to receive some 4K DVD's I ordered and can't wait to see what they will look like! The player fits well with my receiver, looks very sleek and has many additional features build in. It plays my SACD's and Surround CD's without issue. The only point of criticism I have (and it is minor) is that there is no display on the player and it is impossible to tell whether it is on or off..
Pros: Design Audio Quality Video Quality Price
Cons: No display
Was interested in the OPPO 203, but since I could never get over the price tag, I went out to a couple places to research another brand. A local retailer had the OPPO, and they had this Sony and an LG in their demo room. The OPPO picture quality compared to the others was really no better, but the Sony seemed more crisp, and the colors popped. I decided the Sony was it. Even though it did not have dolby vision, it did not concern me since there is so little content out there, and it will take quite a while before there is. The added bonus with the Sony is that it went on sale for black Friday, and it automatically became a no brain purchase.
Pros: Crisp picture colors pop off the screen sturdy build sound quality is great price vs. OPPO
Cons: none that I have come across. no front display, but that is minor for me
Everything I wanted in a DVD player at a great price! For starters, it was an intuitive setup - I was able to leave the manual in its sealed package. Turned it on, and it led me through internet connection, connection with my Amazon Prime account, my Netflix account and recognized my Sonos products. I seen some opine that they miss information displayed on the front panel (nothing is displayed on the front panel). I can't imagine why - I like the clean appearance with less distracting lights emanating from the shelves that contain my audio/video components. I noticed that the manual (when I finally opened it to find out what some of the more esoteric switches were on the controller) indicated that a HDMI cable was included. If it was, I am still looking for it. I love the fact that by selecting the DVD player on my HDMI splitter, I have a one-stop for playing DVDs, Netflix and Amazon. Many other features which I have no need for at the moment. If you are looking for a fully featured DVD player at a reasonable price, this is a great choice.
Pros: Fully featured, The ability to play other services such as Netflix and Amazon directly from the DVD player, compact and sleek looking, great price for a fully featured player.
Cons: No HDMI cable included
So far so good. Great quality playback. Thought I would miss not having the front display but don't miss it at all. The unit is substantial and made very well unlike most others that are all plastic and lightweight.
Pros: Well built High quality playback
Cons: None so far
Really great build quality. Easy setup and play. It is what you expect from a Sony product.
Pros: Quality product
Plays all my disks. Easy setup easy Bluetooth audio connection.
Replaced an old Sony and I am impressed !!!!!!!!!!!
The Sony is built very well. They really beef up the chasis. Setup was simple. Does an awesome job playing 4K and non 4K video. Would highly recommend this player
Pros: Built well Great picture distribution
Wonderful video! And for those looking for a good SACD player, here it is.
I initially bought an Xbox One S since it also played 4K blu-rays. But using the controller as the remote turned out to be a bit of a hassle. Every other blu-ray player I own is a Sony, so I waited until they came out with a more affordable unit. I've had this for about a month, and love it so far. Easy to use remote, great picture, and Sony reliability.
Really no issues, excellent device. If there is an area of improvement it would be that there are no displays on the front panel of any functions performed.
Decided to try this Sony to replace a Pioneer Universal DVD player that was getting buggy. My new display does 4K so it seemed like a good time to upgrade. I also have a nice collection of SACD, DTS and DVD-A discs that still get played frequently. After adjusting several settings to get a more film like and less soap opera picture, the Sony has a very nice, plasma like picture. More important to me was the sound quality and I can say enthusiastically it sounds amazing. Highly recommended! PS; Kudos to Crutchfield for a price match a week after ordering, great customer service!
Pros: Color balance Picture quality Sound quality Plays SACD, DVD-A, DTS discs
Cons: No analog outputs
So far I have watched only one four K movie and it was very good. I just wish there was more external display on the front.
Great 4K Blu-ray player upscaled older DVDs, makes them look better. Good apps works as expected from Sony
Pros: Great 4k picture Nice apps Easy to use
I borrowed some 4K movies from the library and was not overwhelmed with the results at first but after watching the fourth movie "Billy Lynn's Long Half Time Walk" the only one of the four was from "Sony Pictures " (all my stuff is Sony) it ) It must make a difference, the picture was what I was expecting . I now feel good about my purchase. I would recommend it.
Nice 4K DVD player Blu-ray player
This product was everything I thought it be and more plus once again Bob at Crutchfield was very helpful in making my purchase easy.
Pros: The picture is great and it brings my 4k apps to life.
Cons: none so far.
Beautiful picture and great upscaling.......Even regular DVD's look better than ever..... And of course Blu-Ray DVD's look awesome... Can't wait to try 4K DVD's...... Unit is heavy and gives the impression that it's built to last .........
Pros: Everthing ......
Cons: Nothing .....
It has done everything I've asked of it. Great picture quality. Very satisfied!
Well built! Excellent work from Sony!
Pros: Beautiful and well built
Works as advertised. 4k blurays look great and the players is easy to operate.
Pros: Easy to use. Great picture quality.
Cons: None so far.
The ultimate 4k player in that price range. I don't have 4k yet. I still have my Samsung 60'' 8500 plasma bought from Crutchfield also. Denon 4311ci AVR and Definative Technology STL's. I have an awesome system and can't say enough about Crutchfield.....
Pros: A super 4k blu Ray player
I ordered the Sony UBP-X800 Blu-ray player because I was designing and installing a complete home theater in the basement. My front tower speakers and center channel are b&w and mid and rear surrounds are def tech . I am also using Yamaha aventage RX-A2060 receiver and Epson Home cinema 5040UB 3D 4K Enhancement with HDR projector along with the Sony UBP-X800 Blu-ray player. The overall experience is outstanding. The picture quality and the depth of the colors are amazingly beautiful. I watched the 1st disk of the 4k HDR Planet Earth Blu-ray and it was an awesome picture and Sound experience. I had an Oppo Digital BDP93 upstairs and I didn't spend half for this Sony player. We are Happy.
Setting up was easy with no gliches. Wi-Fi connection was smooth and quick. Display is so conveniently laid out that I prefer the Netflix connection via this Bluray over built-in blueray connection of LG OLED 4K tv. The best blueray unit Sony produced!! It deserves 5 star rating.
Excellent product. Great picture and sound. Easy to set up
Pros: Easy to set up, Fantastic picture, great value
This Sony UBP-X800 should be first in the class. Its features and performance stunned us! It put our old player back in the Stone Age. We could not be happier and recommend it without any reservations.
Pros: Features and performance way above the price. And the Crutchfield price was so low, it was surprising when you consider the excellence of the unit.
Cons: Despite being a long time customer, Crutchfield wouldn't give it to me free. Over the years, never had a Crutchfield complaint.
Had the player for two weeks and I am very satisfied with the over all quality .
Pros: Picture apps , sound quality very good.
Cons: None yet.
Great 4k resolution. A little more configuring when your receiver is not HDCP compliant but you can make it work. As always Crutchfield was very helpful. Very good player.
So far so good. I bought this as an eventual replacement for a Oppo 93, and it has handled everything I have thrown at it, and that includes 4K (converted to 1080p/SDR), BluRay, DVD (upscaling is as good if not better than the Oppo 93), DVD-A, SACD, CD, and even the Dolby Atmos demos on a USB drive. I would not say the build quality is in the same league as an Oppo, but it is also less than 1/2 the cost. As an example, the tray button has a somewhat flimsy feel to it, and for that reason it is actually possible to double press it causing the tray to open, and immediately reverse.
Pros: Reasonable price for a full universal player with 4K support. Plays virtually all video and audio formats known to man. Top notch performance.
Cons: Build quality reflects the low price. No analog connections. No front panel display.
After reading up on the Sony UBP-X800 I decided to take the plunge... knowing that I could totally rely on both Crutchfield and Sony to offer a quality product that would meet my needs. My reason for upgrading from our current older Sony Blu-Ray player was to enable more flexibility in terms of the various types of files that can be played on this unit. For example, besides standard Blu-Rays, DVD's and AVCHD video files that we have, I was looking for something that would play the 1080p videos we shoot with our iPhones (after saving/burning them to a DVD disc. (frees-up memory on the phone). This X800 does the job -- plays .mov, .m4v, etc. files, and the videos look awesome even on our older Sony XBR. The final benefit of this unit will come in the future, when we upgrade our TV to a 4K unit. Looking forward to that!
Pros: Almost unlimited number of files/video sources that this can play.
Cons: None yet!
Great player, except on some movies you have to pause the disc so the sound syncs with the movie
Pros: excellent picture
Cons: slight sound issues
The best Blu-ray player I have used
Pros: Picture quality is great
Beautiful picture and the scale up works wonderfully.
Pros: All the apps - you can watch everything on your old 1080p TV as all the apps are built into this Blu-ray
Wonderful product for the Crutchfield price. Easy connect and easy to use! Highly recommend this Blue ray player from Sony and buying it thru Crutchfield! Can only say good things about it. Quality of video is superb!
Pros: Features, Price, Support, and a lot more!
Amazing value and supreme quality Sony hit a home run with this unit Hard to find any faults in it and wow what an amazingly affordable price tag especially considering the solid build of the machine. By without hesitation!
Pros: Everything about this unit is great. Solid old school build. Plays virtually every disc. Excellent audio and video quality
Cons: No legacy rca video or audio outputs.
Excellent sound. Easy to use
Pros: Very easy to operate.
Awesome player! The picture quality is superb as is the audio. The quick boot feature is also spectacular and lets us get into netflix and other online services really quickly without having to wait for the normal long boot time of a Sony TV. The apps still need to evolve to become more comparable to what is available for TVs, but it's got all of the core basics
Awesome player! Video quality is impressive, it's 4K, HDR, Sony quality, so the picture is no surprise. BUT, where the surprise came is when I ran that coax to my old Dennon 3802 receiver, talk about teach an old dog new tricks! Amazing sound quality! Sony got that spot on!
Pros: Sound! Sony quality
Cons: Nitpicking, but I'm partial to back-lit remotes, wish it had one
So far, rock solid video and audio. A perfect match for the Epson 5040UB.
Pros: Relatively inexpense for what you get. Well made.
Cons: None so far.
Excellent 4K/3D blu ray player/wifi at this price point. Solidly built, a nice improvement over previous Sony blu ray players. Very happy with THE PURCHASE and the unit itself. Sony customer service, on the other hand, is quite a mess. The promotion, that Sony initiated for the purchase of this product, of 2 free 4K blu ray discs for registering the product with Sony went less than smoothly, to put it politely. After receiving the player and registering, I was sent an email from Sony thanking me for registering, and to expect an email in 2-4 business days with a "code" to redeem for the 2 discs. That email never came. I won't get into the long and exasperating story with Sony customer service on this matter, suffice to say that after two months, and numerous contacts with them, by phone and email, I was finally able to receive and redeem the code for the discs. I know they were free, but really, if you're going to promote a product in this way, your customers shouldn't have to "jump through hoops" to receive the promised item(s). Sony customer service could learn a thing or two from the Crutchfield team.
Pros: Dealing with Crutchfield customer service
Cons: Dealing with Sony customer service
Very happy with the performance as a player. 4K playback is great. The second HDMI output allows using my older non-4K receiver by assigning it to audio out in settings. Upscale of 1080p Blu-ray to 4k is also excellent. I'd love to give it 5 stars, but there is too little app support at this time. What's the point of having great wireless capability (dual) and only having a couple of useful apps? Not only that, but there appears to be no way to download apps. Hopefully Sony will do an update that will either add apps or the capability to download new apps. If you're only looking for a 4K Blu-ray player this is a great choice, but expect to use another device for your streaming needs.
Pros: 4K Blu-ray performance is the best I've seen 1080p Blu-ray upscale is excellent Two HDMI outputs to allow audio going to receiver while 4k goes to TV
Cons: Poor app support
This is my 3rd different 4k UHD blu ray player, Ive purchased the Phillips, the Samsung and now the Sony. Every single one had different problems and had to send all of them back. I figured for the amount of money and the brand Sony would have finally made a good product but I was wrong. The picture quality was great but froze atleast once or twice times watching a movie and would skip extremely far forward then would never allow me to go back to that spot without completely going to the main menu and starting the disc all over again.
Big difference! Is it set up with my Sony TV and surround system. very easy to set up I love the colors. I always get great service from Crutchfield and also they have very nice people to talk to.
Pros: Works well with my system.
Cons: .Nothing so far.
Sonys first dedicated 4K BkuRay player was worth the wait. Moderately priced it has all the features I need and want with great upscaling of standard BluRays. This is a quality Sony product that won't disappoint you with an easy setup which also streams many popular apps like Amazon video and Netflix. This was my first purchase from Crutchfield and I look forward to dealing with them again.
Pros: Sony quality
Cons: No front panel display.
Solid overal player, especially at this price. The video is phenomenal when it's paired with my LG OLED in 4K UHD. The units software is fast and responsive. The best part about the player is the audio, from CDs to SACDs to a USB drive loaded with high res files, this unit will exponentially increase your mid-to high end system.
Pros: -picture quality -SOUND quality!! -build
Cons: -none, although it would've been great to have a detachable power cord for possible upgrades
The unit I got must have been defective because it would freeze sometimes. I also didn't like the fact that there is no external display But just a green light, and the remote feels cheap. But the picture quality is great and the unit feels substantial
Pros: Great picture quality, substantial feeling, 2 hdmi ports, 2 feel UHD disks, price.
Cons: Cheap feeling remote , no external display just a green light, banding on the home screen.Crutchfield response on 4/19/2017 George contacted our Customer Support team and exchanged for another Blu-ray player. Purchases from Crutchfield can be returned or exchanged within 60 days.
received unit on march 20. setup was quite easy. sound and picture are excellent. was very disappointed that UBP-x800 did not have the "pandora" app. turned unit on yesterday, april 15, to watch a move and noted that a system update was available. after clicking the box, decided to check apps. pandora now available. very pleased that sony made this addition. i've listened to pandora on a "roku" 4k player and now on the x800. sony notes this is a"hi res" audio unit. i believe it. sound quality is better than the roku.
Finally. The blu ray player I've been waiting for. Perfect in every way. Best picture ice ever seen. Goes great with my 4k hdr tv
Pros: Picture, sound, options
I love this this blu ray player
Pros: Its plays cds DVDs blu rays this is a awesome player
I've been waiting for this unit to come out for some time now. Having recently picked up 55" 4K Sony TV, I wanted to add a UHD player to show it off and I was waiting for Sony's entry. I am glad I did! The video and audio quality is top notch. I was blown away by the crystal clear image, the rich HDR color palette and the absolutely fantastic range in the audio. Quite simply, the biggest upgrade I've ever made as far as a media player goes. I highly recommend the X800.
Pros: [---Speed---] Loading of 4k movies is fast. Even when navigating and using the included apps, it is fairly snappy. [---WiFi---] This uses a WiFi card with MIMO and maxed out my connection. Nothing to be said here: fast, responsive, no drops. [---Quality---] Gives a beautiful, clear and as precise a picture you could want.
This 4K player is awesome. Loads really fast and easy to setup. Sound and Picture is outstanding.
Excellent choice to upgrade home theater to 4k
Pros: Great picture quality, easy to set up
Cons: Remote is bare bones
Taking it out of the box you will notice the weight. It feels rugged and sturdy. Start up was simple and picture and sound were great. Reliability will have to be determined as time goes by.
Cons: None so far
On backorder when I placed the order. So glad I did! Player plays marviously with great conversion to 4K on the 4K DVDs I have. Once again Crutchfield excels in the purchase of electronic equipment. Great, company.
The Sony UBP-800 delivers on sound and picture quality,Build quality is very good and Ive only had it for a few weeks so time will tell ,I would say it is much better then its Samsung equivalent, but not better then the new Oppo as I have them both. Sent the samsung back. So at this price point you cant go wrong the Sony. The Sony gets high praise from me.
Cons: None so far.
Excellent addition to our home theatre. First thing I noticed when I recieved it was the weight. Sony built this unit like a tank. Very rugged and sturdy. This is much quieter than all my previous Sony Blu ray players. This is a must have.
Pros: Great picture, sound, and unit construction
Cons: Pricey, but it will drop over time
This is probably a review about Crutchfield rather than my new Sony. My Crutchfield rep recommended it would be worth my wait until this new unit becomes available instead of buying a cheaper brand. As soon as this Sony was stocked they immediately shipped the unit to me. While going through the quick set up, it appeared to load slowly with some freezing up of the firmware update through an ethernet connection. Eventually I inserted a DVD. It took almost 15 minutes to load. Then suddenly quit. Received a default saying it couldn't read a SONY 4K dvd. After a couple of more hours of fighting with this I contacted Crutchfield support. Ottis agreed that I might have a defective unit which is a rarity for this unit. He immediately rushed out a new player to me (no charges) that I received in less than two days. Set up the new DVD player and everything was perfect. Now enjoying this great addition to my 75" Sony, Yamaha amp with my Bose system. Fantastic picture with incredible audio. Contacted Crutchfield with the good news. They emailed me a prepaid UPS label for the defective player. On a side note, I originally chose the power saver mode. Later changed it to a standby mode. This enabled the DVD's to load much quicker and the apps were immediately available for use. 5 Stars to Crutchfield and 5 to the SonyUBP-X800
Pros: Too many to list. Most already mentioned on prior reviews.
Cons: Turning off power mode during set up will cause the player to slow during startup.
This 4K bluray player has a better sound and video quality than my other Samsung 8500 that I have in my bedroom. Specially with Atmos and HDR 4 k movies. The remote is a standard size not like the tiny toy like remote of the Samsung. The 4K movies load faster than the Samsung. The only thing for me that the Samsung is significantly better than this Sony is the amount of apps like YouTube where you can watch one of the most vivid 4K videos in the web. I hope Sony will add more apps to its player so we can only use one device instead of also needing an additional streaming device like a 4K Roku or fireTV.
Pros: Excellent audio sound with Atmos, great HDR for some 4k bluray, solid frame
Cons: Lack of YouTube app, no HDR for Amazon Prime videos,
Totally awesome! Well built, solid construction, feels like quality at first contact. Super easy to connect and set-up. Awe inspiring 4K images and super quality 3D playback. Netflix and VUDU look even better than direct connection to my TV. Can't ask for anything more. Sony even sweetened the pot by including two free movies, which arrived only 3 days after my choice was made. Thanks, SONY! Of course, the purchase through Crutchfield was truly painless. It's a joy to deal with a professional company with such an emphasis on customer service! Thanks, Crutchfield.
Pros: Quality throughout.
Cons: None that I've found yet.
Great product n look very good quality
Fabulous picture and sound for the money. Plays all my discs perfectly and easy to use.
Pros: Easy set up, great picture and sound.
Cons: Only a few apps to choose from
The Sony X800 has proved to be a very satisfying purchase. It is cheaper in price than some of its most noted rivals but seems to match them in terms of picture quality. There are cheaper UHD players but from what I read they do not produce the Sony's picture quality. The player is very heavy and gives the impression of being extremely well built. This is backed up by how silent it is while playing a disc. There are only a few apps on this player at the moment, Netflx and Amazon being the most prominent names. Keep in mind that this is a very new player and as firmware updates come there will probably be more to come. The performance on Netflix is very snappy and better than on my TV which is also a Sony. Also keep in mind that this player features HDR 10 but does not have Dolby Vision. DV is new and may possibly be added later but that is in no way a promise from Sony. So, if you are in the market for an affordable UHD player this one should be on your short list.
Pros: Solid build Great picture quality Plays a huge number of disc types including exotic audio formats Extremely quiet Affordable compared to other players in the same class of performance
Cons: Very few apps No Dolby Vision
This Sony is replacing an older OPPO Blu ray player that was fantastic in both picture and sound. Having upgraded to 4K I needed to replace the OPPO. Having done my extensive research as to the limited selection of 4K Blu ray players and considering the new OPPO 4K, which was too pricey, I decided to wait for the Sony. All I can say is WOW. The picture and sound is even better than the OPPO. I was not concerned about the Apps the Sony has, as I use both a 4K Roku and Fire TV for streaming. I am impressed with the build quality, picture, sound, ease of set-up and menu to customize to your situation. I really like this Sony, as it makes regular Blu ray's look like they are 4K.
Cons: None so far
i was surprised at how big this was. The other years are smaller and smaller. i like it back to normal size like this. I do wish it had a display on the front for time, etc, i like that stuff. It is a very solid player. I only had to use one HDMI cable, as my receiver has the 2.2 pass through. It looks amazing when playing and the sound is great. I only saw a couple of apps in it, youtube, and opera i think. its not giving me any other to pick from. not sure if there will be more later or thats it. They are supposed to play in 4K, so maybe waiting for others to come out in 4K. This was worth the money though. So far, so good. Sony even sent me 2 free ultra discs after buying this, info is on the box and i got then in less than a week. not a big selection, but better than nothing.
Pros: Clear picture, great sound
Cons: only a couple of apps with the machine, but not a big deal.
INSTALLED EASY, SET-UP EASY, WORKS PERFECT.
Pros: Replaced a Samsung unit that refused to load a Blu-Ray disc after about a year of use (just long enough to run out of warranty). Hope this one does better.
Cons: None so far.
Great picture quality for 4k blu ray disks, awesome sound with ATMOS. But such a POOR collection of 4K apps. No HDR for Amazon, no 4K for Vudu, and no apps for Hulu, HBO, Showtime, etc. Why? It has such great potential to be the ONLY box needed to be attached to the TV, but just a dumb blu-ray player without app support.
Pros: + Great picture quality for 4k blu ray disks + Awesome sound with ATMOS + Fast
Cons: - Lacking in streaming support - poor collection of 4K apps. - No HDR for Amazon - No 4K for Vudu - No apps for Hulu, HBO, Showtime, etc.
The location of IR remote sensor in the instruction manual is incorrect. It is in the upper right side of of front panel. This information is for people using a Blaster. Video and audio output in 4K and standard blu-ray DVD's is worth the price. Setup is easy to follow. Netflix button on remote is a great feature and easy to navigate. My installation is all hard wired.
Does better than I thought it would
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: No Spotify
The pros are the picture quality and the sound decoding is great. Net flex is HD plus 5.1 sound. I am using a Epson projector which can handle 1080P only. So here is the down side, after spending several hours on the phone with Sony reps, yes several, the conclusion was that you cannot add any opts other than the four that came with the program in the player. The software will be updated at a future date, but a date was not given. Also as everyone knows that Blu-ray movies are not in 16:9 ratio so you have a letter box. For thee hundred dollars, the player is worth it ,but not a penny more and the pitfalls of Blu-ray are many as I cannot use the full 120 inches of my screen to watch a movie. Note, all 4K TV's are 16:9 ratio..
Pros: Picture and sound quality are great.
Cons: No apts. available or than the four that came with the software.
Great 4K player at a great price! Plays every kind of disk I have. Regular dvds look great, 4K is awesome. Wonderful sound.
Pros: Xtra HDMI for sound. Solid build.
Cons: None I'm aware of.
I originally purchased another player which was on sale for $30 off. As they say penny wise, pound foolish! The Samsung had terrible instructions and it often would not turn on without switching it on and off several times. I should have known better. All my other equipment is Sony which I have never had any real problems. But Crutchfield's return policy allowed me to return that piece of junk and get equivalent Sony in one day. The sales people were tremendously helpful and I now have the Sony player, with excellent instructions, intuitive operation, easy to turn on, and outstanding picture quality.
Pros: east of operation excellent instruction booklet
Cons: None that I've seen
Has nice picture and remote cons no display and only 3 amps
Pros: nice picture
Cons: no display and 3 amps
Very nice Blu Ray player worth every penny perfect for my needs
Pros: Works great
Cons: Nothing yet

The player can recognize Mass Storage Class (MSC) Devices that are FAT-compatible and Still Image Capture Devices (SICD) class devices. The player can recognize up to 500 folders/files. Direct Stream Digital (DSD): Enjoy studio-quality sound thanks to the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio codec; designed specifically for High-Resolution Audio. This 1-bit format utilizes a stream of very high frequency 1s and 0s to recreate audio waveforms at a higher resolution than conventional codecs. The result is clearer, crisper, High-Resolution Audio quality. The UHD Blu-ray player supports DSD 5.6MHz decoding thru BD, DVD, CD, USB, and DLNA.
HDMI 2.0a Output + HDMI Audio Only Output: The Sony UHD Blu-ray player is equipped with dual HDMI outputs for separating audio and video signals (the HDMI Out 2 does not output video signal). The HDMI Out 1 can be used to carry both digital video and audio all in one cable, plus it supports the latest HDMI 2.0a spec. You can choose to use the HDMI Out 2 to send audio only to your A/V receiver and the HDMI Out 1 to send only video to your Ultra-HD TV. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K.
Note: Use a premium high-speed HDMI cable with 18 Gbps and above to view 4K and HDR content optimally.

Experience sharp contrasts and brightness with deeper blacks and brighter whites. HDR video signals contain up to 100x the brightness of a standard (SDR) signal, massively increasing peak brightness while retaining deep and highly detailed blacks, for an incredible viewing experience.
BT.2020 Color Spaces: Support for the new BT.2020 color spaces means access to a much wider range of colors than conventional TV signals offer. This ultra-wide color space means content creators can deliver much more saturated and realistic color from deep aquatic blues to natural greens and vibrant reds.

Cinema Conversion Mode: The Sony Ultra-HD Blu-ray player offers two Cinema Conversion Modes - (1) Auto mode automatically detects whether the material is video-based or film-based, and switches to the appropriate conversion method. (2) The Video mode is suited for video-based material and will always be selected regardless of the content.

Surround Sound Decoders: The Sony UBP-X800 UHD Blu-ray player has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors with support for Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio. Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD are only output via the player's HDMI output.
