About the Sony XAV-AX1000

Alexander H.

Superior iPhone® control and sound

I've clocked a lot of miles with a Sony XAV receiver in my dash, and thanks to Apple CarPlay®, the fun never stops. If you're an iPhone user like me, this Sony XAV-AX1000 digital multimedia receiver makes in-dash smartphone control familiar with an Apple-designed app-based interface and integrated Siri® control. It automatically detects the phone you're using, so you won't have to mess with menus. Once you take a trip with CarPlay, you'll wonder how you ever got by without it.

Sony XAV-AX100 Digital Media Receiver

Large icons on the screen help you find what you want with just a glance.

Let Siri help

With built-in Bluetooth® connectivity, this smartphone-friendly receiver creates a wireless link between your mobile device and your car's audio system, allowing you to stream the music and podcasts you love. With a compatible iPhone®, you can use your voice to control Siri Eyes Free through the receiver. You'll be able to control music, maps, calls, and messages just by talking to Siri. When Siri talks back, you'll hear the response through the car's speakers.

SiriusXM-ready and more

If you're looking for radio stations that won't disappear when you head into the hills, add a SiriusXM tuner and enjoy satellite radio's rich selection of programs wherever you go. A highly sensitive AM/FM tuner will catch all your local stations. This Sony also offers easy touchscreen control of media from external sources via USB or aux input.

Experience Sony quality

Built-in amplification brings depth and dynamics to your music. Sony lets you take full advantage of this new, full sound with a 10-band equalizer. Fine-tune the acoustics in your vehicle, quickly access preset tone curves to get the sound you want, and use Sony's Extra Bass to enhance the thump you expect from your favourite tunes.

Touch and turn

Touchscreen control is a wonderful thing, especially on this big 6.2" screen, but if you're a little old school (like me), you appreciate a volume knob. Sony assigns double duty to their knob, letting you access the receiver's extensive sound control menus with just a push of the dial. You'll hold that same button to use voice commands for your smartphone.

Room to expand

A front-facing USB port and aux input make listening tunes on other devices like flash drives or an old mp3 player so convenient.

Adding on a rear-view camera? The XAV-AX1000 comes with a dedicated rear camera input. Customizable guide lines on the screen will help you back up with confidence, even if you're piloting a large SUV.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

You'll need a wired connection to your parking brake to access settings and other features on this receiver. Your parking brake must be connected and set in order to view video on its screen.

This digital multimedia receiver will not play CDs.

iPhone (Apple CarPlay) & USB Integration

Apple CarPlay: Use all your essential iPhone functions on the road, with Apple CarPlay and your iPhone 5 or newer (running iOS 7.1 or higher). Connect your phone via an Apple-certified Lightning-to-USB cable, and you'll see a familiar interface displayed clearly on the Sony receiver's touchscreen. Simply tap the icons to take calls, check voicemails and text messages, or bring up maps. And of course, listen to your favorite songs using iTunes, Apple Music, or select music apps. Apple CarPlay even lets you talk with Siri to control everything using voice commands. You can dictate text messages, control music playback, or get directions, without ever taking your eyes off the road.

    • Maps: The power and simplicity of Apple Maps comes to your dashboard; complete with turn-by-turn direction, traffic conditions, and estimated travel time. You can enter a new destination or choose a favorite or recent destination using the head unit's touchscreen or by simply asking Siri. CarPlay can also predict where you most likely want to go using addresses from your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars. If you have iOS 12.0 or newer on your iPhone with the latest version of Google Maps or Waze, you can choose to navigate via Google Maps or Waze instead of CarPlay. Google Maps and Waze do not support Siri voice control, but will have there own proprietary voice control function which has to be accessed through a touchscreen icon on the receiver.
    • Phone & Messages: You'll be able to make calls, return missed calls, and listen to voicemails through the Sony receiver. Siri can also help you do all these things. In addition, Siri can send, read, and reply to your text messages for you; so you never have to look at your iPhone while driving.
    • Music Library: Access your artists, song, playlists, and iTunes Radio on your iPhone using the Sony receiver's touchscreen. Or, just tell Siri what you'd like to listen to. The head unit's touchscreen will display song/artist information, as well as album art in the background.
    • Apps: CarPlay also supports additional audio apps that you've downloaded to your iPhone for enjoying music, radio, sports, news, podcasts, & audiobooks. Control them from the head unit's touchscreen just like you would from your iPhone. Current supported apps include (fees may apply):
    Notes:
    • Apple CarPlay is compatible with iPhone 5 or newer running iOS 7.1 or higher version.
    • Bluetooth hands-free communication cannot be used while Apple CarPlay is being used with a connected iPhone. However, you can stream Bluetooth audio from a currently paired device while using Apple CarPlay Maps.

USB MSC (Mass Storage Class) Playback: The Sony XAV-AX1000's front-panel USB (type-A) port supports connection of a USB MSC (mass storage class) device, like a thumbdrive or portable digital audio player. You'll be able to playback a variety of audio, video, and photo files on your compatible USB MSC device through the Sony receiver, as well as control playback and view song/artist information with album art. See chart below for compatible files -

Note: This unit's USB port does not support connection of an Android device, USB hub, or USB card-reader.

Smartphone Charging: The Sony receiver's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected iPhone or other smartphone device when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. If your iPhone or smartphone device has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth 3.0: The Sony XAV-AX1000 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth 3.0, allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.1 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony XAV-AX1000. Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Simple Secure Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony XAV-AX1000 without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. This unit can only be paired and connected with one Bluetooth device at a time.

Note: Bluetooth pairing is not possible while Apple CarPlay is being used.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The Sony XAV-AX1000 supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone. Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The unit features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. And thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the XAV-AX1000 provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. The controls of the XAV-AX1000 can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's touchscreen. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the XAV-AX1000, you can dial a phone number in a variety of ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's touchscreen keypad.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing from the unit's touchscreen.
      • Phone Book: You can transfer up to 1,000 contacts from your phone's phonebook and store them in the head unit for easy access using the unit's touchscreen monitor.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Redial: Use this feature to easily redial the last number you called.
    • Phone Call Adjustments: During a conversation, you can adjust the ring-tone volume, adjust the caller's voice volume level, adjust the microphone gain level, as well as switch between the Hands-Free Mode and the Hands-Held Mode (talking directly on your cell phone).

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Sony XAV-AX1000 also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. You can stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content from your Bluetooth source device to the XAV-AX1000. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

    • SBC & AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the XAV-AX1000 offers support of AAC codecs for higher quality audio streaming from select Apple devices. By supporting AAC, the receiver offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Advanced Music Playback: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the XAV-AX1000 lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc. Advanced music browsing is supported by Android 4.0+ smartphones and Apple iPhones 5.0+ (specific advanced functions vary by phone).
    • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (no album art).
    SiriusXM-Ready + AM/FM Tuner

Optional SiriusXM Tuner: The Sony XAV-AX1000 is SiriusXM-Ready and compatible with the SiriusXM Connect Vehicle Tuner (220SXV300 sold separately). The SiriusXM Connect Vehicle Tuner supports SiriusXM programming with access to 175+ SiriusXM channels via subscription; check out the most popular SiriusXM subscription packages here. Additional features of the SiriusXM Connect tuner include:

    • Channel list displays a list of all available channels
    • Category Search searches for channels in a certain category
    • Displayed Information such as Channel Name, Artist Name, & Song Title can be viewed on the head unit's LCD touchscreen
    • Up to 18 SiriusXM Satellite Radio station presets
    • Channels containing unsuitable content for children can be blocked
Note: A separate SiriusXM Satellite Radio subscription is required (operates on the XM Network). However, you can easily add this SiriusXM tuner to an existing Sirius or XM account for a Multi-Radio Discount Plan.

Digital Clarity Tuner w/ RDS: The Sony XAV-AX1000 is equipped with a Digital Clarity Tuner for clear AM/FM stereo sound with digital processing technology. The radio features 5 memory bands to store and receive AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets each in FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2 (total: 18 FM/12 AM). Preset tuning can be done manually or automatically.

    • BSM (Best Station Memory): BSM (Best Tuning Memory) selects stations with the best signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency. You can select from FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
    • RDS: FM stations with Radio Data System (RDS) service send inaudible digital information along with the regular radio program signal. Radio Data System (RDS) displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible FM stations.
    Aux & Camera Input

Auxiliary Input: A front-panel stereo minijack (3.5mm) input is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable digital music player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

Note: This Aux input is for audio only and does not support video.

Rearview Camera Input: The Sony XAV-AX1000 is equipped with a composite video rearview camera input to connect a backup camera (sold separately). By connecting a backup camera, you can use the in-dash receiver's touchscreen monitor to see what's behind you when backing up.

    • Parking Guide Lines: When a backup camera is connected and you are viewing a rearview image, parking guide lines appear on-screen making parking easy and safer. There are three color-coded horizontal guidelines. The parking guide lines can be customized to fit your type of vehicle better.
    • Auto-Switching: When your vehicle's shift lever is in the reverse position, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera; the purple/white wire of the included harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching. Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.1 seconds. You can also manually select the rearview camera input from the head units touchscreen..
Note: The rearview camera feature is meant as a backup aid only; never solely rely on the rearview camera when backing up. In addition to using the rearview camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.
    Audio & DSP Section

Dynamic Reality Amp 2: The Dynamic Reality Amp 2 gives you 20W (RMS) x 4ch / 55W (Peak) x 4ch of power, so you can play music as loudly or softly as you like with clarity and detail. The amp has 47% less internal resistance than conventional units, for increased output and clear, natural sound at any volume.

    • Continuous Power Output: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 55 watts x 4-channels (220 total watts)
Note: The power specifications for the Sony XAV-AX1000 are compliant with the CTA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

5ch/2V Preouts+ Subwoofer Control: The XAV-AX1000 contains five 2-volt RCA preouts; a front channel pair, rear channel pair, and mono-subwoofer channel. The front and rear channel preouts can be faded, while the subwoofer preout is non-fading. You can adjust the subwoofer preout's volume level (-10 to +10) independently from the head unit's volume control. You can also select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

    Low-Pass & High-Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer preout features a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 120Hz. The front & rear speaker high-level and low-level outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. The slope of the low & high pass crossovers is 12dB.

10-Band EQ: You can select from a variety of preset EQ curves. Select from R&B, Rock, Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Electronica, Jazz, Soul, Country, Custom, & Off. The Custom EQ preset mode allows you to tailor the sound to your personal preference with its 10-band graphic equalizer. Cut and boost ten different frequencies (32, 63, 125, 250, 500, 1k, 2k, 4k, 8k, 16k Hz) from -10 to +10 for unlimited sound sculpting options.

Dynamic Stage Organizer (DSO): Sound waves are directional, so if your speakers are in your doors or under your dash, the audio may seem muddy or unclear. Dynamic Stage Organizer (DSO) adjusts the width and height of the soundstage, improving the stereo positioning so music sounds like it's coming from the dashboard.

ExtraBass: Activate ExtraBass at the touch of a button for an instant, low-end boost. Unlike conventional bass boosters, ExtraBass minimizes distortion at all volume levels by automatically adjusting frequency and gain to their optimal positions.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation (only when using the receiver's built-in amp). This function can be turned On or Off.

    Touchscreen & Remote Control

6.2" Touchscreen w/ Gesture Control: The Sony XAV-AX1000 digital media receiver is equipped with a 6.2" touchscreen with full-color display, responsive touch-sensitive control, and a resolution of 800 RGB x 480 (1,152,000 pixels). With Gesture Control, you can perform frequently-used operations by simply swiping your finger on the touchscreen monitor to the left, right, up, or down (these Gesture Controls do not work with Apple CarPlay).

    • Wallpaper: You can choose between five color wallpapers (Purple, Blue, Green, Red, Black) for the background image of the unit's touchscreen monitor.
    • Picture EQ: You can select a picture quality mode suitable for the interior brightness of your vehicle. You can choose from Dynamic, Standard, Theater, or Custom. This feature is only available when the parking brake is engaged and USB video is the selected source.
    • Aspect Ratio: You can also change the screen's aspect ratio to suit your video content. You can choose from Normal, Zoom, Full, or Captions. This feature is only available when the parking brake is engaged and USB video is the selected source.
    • Dimmer: To change the brightness of the display you can set the Sony receiver to one of two dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), or Dimmer On (display always dim). You can adjust the dimmer level from -5 to +5.
Note: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire in the supplied harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. Video can only be displayed when the vehicle's parking brake is engaged. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still enjoy CarPlay and Bluetooth, as well as access audio adjustments.

3-Way Rotary Dial: In addition to touchscreen control, the Sony head unit features a 3-way rotary dial and one push-button control along the left side of the front-panel. The ergonomic rotary dial makes operation distraction-free. Turn it to control volume, or push the integrated button to launch sound control menus. Alternatively, hold the button to use voice commands. The push-button provides access to the receiver's home menu, as well as attenuates the receiver's audio.

Remote Control: The Sony XAV-AX1000 comes with an IR wireless remote control and supports compatibility with steering wheel remote adapters (sold separately).

    • IR Remote: The included IR remote (RM-X170) provides wireless control of the Sony receiver. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions (not Bluetooth Phone) of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.
    • SWC Input: This receiver is compatible with aftermarket steering wheel audio control adapters (sold separately) designed to retain your vehicles existing factory steering wheel controls (if equipped) once the factory radio is replaced with an aftermarket head unit. Its 3.5mm rear-panel mounted SWC input jack allows for simple connectivity (other hardwire connections may be required).

Can an iPhone connector line be sent back to the arm rest storage box instead of just the front panel plug?
    george j  Jun 15, 2021
    1 answer
    A
This receiver does not have any rear inputs for connecting an iPhone so the front input must be used with any cable that relocates its inputs. If you prefer to hide the cables and not have it plugged into the front of the receiver, I recommend looking for models that feature a rear USB input. We have advisors that can be reached by calling 1-800-324-9695 who can discuss all your goals to give a personal recommendation on a receiver that will work

You can use Bluetooth to talk and play music but apple play doesn't work unless you plug it directly in. With that said this unit only connects with your phone half the time. This is the buggiest radio I've ever dealt with. When everything is working I really like it, but it constantly has issues with the black screen stating no video detected. When it does that nothing works except the volume knob, you can't change stations or anything. Also I gave up on trying to use hands free phone calls on it. That pretty much never worked from day one. I can count on one hand the number of times it has worked correctly in the years I've owned it. Personally I wish I would have spent a little more money and bought something else. I would highly recommend you avoid the irritation that this unit will bring you.

Yes, it comes with an external microphone you can install somewhere in your car, and a long wire to connect it to to the unit. You run the wire inside your dashboard, so it's hidden. I recently had this unit installed in my 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora. Everything was fine after the first few days the unit was installed. However, when I went to start my car the other day the battery was dead. I jumped the battery later that night and everything was running fine. The next morning the battery died again. I didn't leave any lights on and the car battery is fairly new. Any ideas?
    lauren  Jun 16, 2020
    1 answer
    A
The radio has a connection direct to the battery that is used to keep radio stations stored and the clock running and accurate. It takes very, very little current from the battery. My first inclination would be to go by an Advance Auto, AutoZone or O'Riellys auto parts store and have the battery checked. They will do it for free. If the battery checks out good, and it probably will, I would check with whoever installed the radio. It would be quite a coincidence if this and the radio installation are not somehow related. It would be possible to wire the radio incorrectly where it is drawing too much power when the car is not running. Not very likely, but possible.

which back-up camera 2007 Mustang? We have a licence plate frame and the back-up light is above the licence plate. Does the backup light add glare when backing up?
    barbara a  May 24, 2020

We don't have a backup camera made specifically for a 2007 Ford Mustang, but we do have some universally designed backup cameras that can work and some of them mount where the licence plate is on the back of a vehicle. I do not expect backup lights or even the lights the illuminate the license plate to cause glare with this type of camera.

does this radio pull in fm stations 50 miles away?
    robert  May 10, 2020
    2 answers
    A
Hi Rob, we could not guarantee the distance in which this receiver would be able to pick up FM radio stations. The Sony XAV-AX1000 does have an FM sensitivity of 7dBf, which does reflect that the receiver does have great FM reception. If the station you are listening to has a strong signal strength, you should have no problem with poor reception.
    jessica  Jun 01, 2020 (Staff)
    A
I guess that depends on the stations signal strength more than the radio. I can pick up a station that's about 70 miles away pretty clearly. Depends on the terrain though.

How do you use the equalizer for best sound quality? I've never dealt with an equalizer. I have the front and back set Polk Audio DB 652 in my 2007 Jeep patriot and all other speakers are the factory speakers, no additional amplifier. Any suggestions?
    braxton  Dec 30, 2019

I have found it best to find a radio station or music you like and go to the EQ settings and simply select a setting. Listen for a as long as you want then go to the next setting and listen some more until you find the sound you like. Some settings work better on radio stations while others work better on digital music or audio books. You have to play with each setting for whatever you're listening to.
    jeff  Jan 11, 2020

You can select from a variety of preset EQ curves.

Is this a good unit for powering a jbl 12" subwoofer w/ 150W built in amp? Would it be a hard install with ready harness and would I have plenty of power and tuning options?
    garrett  Dec 05, 2019
    1 answer
    A
Hi Garrett, thank you for your question. The Sony XAV-AX1000 does have enough preamp outputs to use to connect your powered JL subwoofer. These are 2 volt preamp outputs, and will give you a good connection for your sub. There is some subwoofer control through this head unit, including volume control and low pass filter for a more extensive high frequency cancellations, which will give you a fuller bass response. The Ready Harness service does help out with the difficulty of the installation, but to be able to give you more advice on the install, we would need to check fitment, and research on your specific vehicle. Please chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. A member of our Advisor team will be happy to go over this receiver and it's abilities, as well as offer guidance on the install process.

Hi Josh! Thanks for your question! The USB port on the Sony XAV-AX1000 receiver is located on the front of the unit, so routing the cable elsewhere for mounting may be a little more difficult than it would be if the port were in the back of the receiver, but as long as you are using an Apple-certified Lightning-to-USB cable, you can route that connection wherever works best for you. For more info, or if you have any questions on that, chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695.

Yes! As long as your iPhone has iOS version 12 and higher, you can play music via pandora and Spotify through the apps on-screen. If your iPhone has an older iOS, it'll still play, but you won't be able to navigate the apps on the Sony head unit. Apple added full CarPlay support for third-party (non-Apple) apps in iOS 12 and up.

I chose to solder the Sony radio harness wires to the harness provided by Crutchfield, but you can use butt splices if you choose. Done correctly, you should have no problems with the connections. It creates a bigger bundle of wires if you butt splice them, though

If you properly splice the "camera on" signal wire into the reverse light circuit, the camera will automatically come on when you put the vehicle in reverse

    Yes
    duane  Apr 23, 2019
    A
Yes. During the install, you will connect the camera power wire to the wire providing power to the reverse lights The output of the camera is connected to the camera/video input on the receiver. The receiver should only display the camera when it receives a signal from the camera, which will only be when the vehicle is in reverse.

you can not use carplay wirelessly with this head unit. you can listen to music via bluetooth but to use carplay you need to connect your iphone to the headunit with a usb to lightening cable. if you want wireless carplay you'll need to find another head unit which supports it. i believe alone has one or two that support wireless carplay.

    jason  Mar 09, 2019 (Staff)
    A
Hi Robert, I'm not sure about the resolution - this is probably a Crutchfield Tech question. That said, I recall that the Tech who helped us suggested the Clarion camera with this unit. The input is a standard connection, so I'd imagine there will be a couple of choices to pick from. That said, the display quality is great-better than the Pioneer SPH-DA100 (AppRadio 4) I've installed in two other cars - one has the clarion camera connected and the image is good. . .so, I'd imagine the Sony will be even better!

No, but the radio comes with a small microphone which I installed just below the radio. Works great, my wife LOVES the upgrade to her Forester. Easy install with the wiring kit. Getting the steering controls working was a stretch. Rather than cutting the factory wires, I ordered a second interface plug kit and manually pulled the pins from it and reinstalled into the Crutchfield plug. Not sure why Crutchfield does not provide this with thier kit?

Can the backup camera view be accessed without the car being in reverse?
    michael  Feb 23, 2019

Yes. Scroll left for more icons. Touch camera, and you can view while driving or parked. That is, as long as you have wired the camera power correctly. Having 12v independent of reverse.
    randy  Feb 23, 2019

Not that I am aware of. I have not found/figured out any way to do this.
    kelsey  Feb 23, 2019

Yes , but you have to wire the camera so that it's always powered when the car is running. I have my camera wired to the backup light so it's only powered when in reverse.
    edward  Feb 23, 2019
    A
No. You must be in reverse
    amelia  Feb 23, 2019
    A
It depends on how your specific backup camera is wired. If your camera has constant 12v power then you should be able to access the picture any time. A lot of cameras only connect to the reverse light which only supplies power when the car is in reverse.

Where does the XM tuner plug into on the back of the unit?
    robert  Jan 01, 2019
    2 answers
    A
do a Google image search for picture of the rear of AX1000 showing all connectors; a current, compatible XM tuner will plug in - easy peasy; there is plenty of room in the AX1000 2DIN frame to then ziptie/secure the XM tuner & its cable(s); the only effort-full work is running the antenna wire between the XM tuner and an acceptable XM antenna. NB: your vehicle's factory-installed XM antenna (if present) might not work with an after-market XM tuner for attentuation/resistance or other technical reasons - i had to go with the included XM magnetic antenna that came with the XM radio kit

What version of carplay comes with this unit? Is it possible to update it when future versions of CarPlay come out? The latest version of CarPlay allows for third part navigation apps so this is a really important thing to highlight in your product descriptions. Ability to upgrade is also super important as it is a big distinction between products and also a major pain point with many factory systems. As an iOS developer who develops apps for CarPlay, being able to update the CarPlay version is even more critical.

    pierce  Dec 20, 2018

We just installed this CarPlay-compatible unit and haven't looked for software updates for it. Our Pioneer DA-10 has been updated twice and is as simple as formatting a USB thumb drive and downloading from the Pioneer website, then plugging it into the same USB port as your device cable. I'd guess Sony's process will be similar.
    scott  Dec 20, 2018
    A
My understanding is that the CarOS is really pushed from your phone, and is not installed on the head unit. If you update your phone it will include the updated CarPlay. This is likely why all of the CarPlay updates are included as part of an iOS release. This is also what allows the video port to be used in some situations to get the CarPlay UI on the screen of a head unit that doesn't support it. I have never seen a version of CarPlay mention on any head unit spec, just that is compatible and can read the video and fat feed pushed over the lighting->usb cable.

I don't know 100%, but I really doubt it. I installed mine in F150. The apple car play initiates as soon as you plug into sony USB port and phone unlocked. You have options to switch to on the radio... Tuner, Sirius, BT device, Aux. separate usb device not a menu item. I really doubt it integrates, but just a guess on my end. To my knowledge, the factory one in my truck does not.
    joe  Dec 06, 2018

No, the radio has only one usb input on the front and and you have to plug your iPhone into that for CarPlay.
    edward  Dec 06, 2018

I have a 2012 Chevy Malibu . I attached the mic to the air vent in the dash console. It's the right height, closest point to my mouth /easiest place to fish the wire. This setup works well for me & the mic clip snaps onto my vent. Hands free works as I had hoped for. No complaints from my wife/friends when talking. Great deck for the $.

My 4 Runner already had a non Toyota double DIN radio so I reused the microphone that is mounted on the windshield in the top left corner. It works very well.

I mounted it on the left side on the pilon ( don't know the name of it ) left side of windshield. Works great and I was able to hide the wire inside the casing. Love this radio and Siri works great.

I didn't feel like pulling out my headliner and side posts to get mine up to the sun visor, so I just mounted it near the cigarette lighter in my 2002 GMC pickup. This is below the stereo and in the center of the dash, but the sound quality seems fine in the calls I have made. I was concerned that there would be too much road noise, but the quality of the microphone seems pretty good and it doesn't have to be really close to your mouth in order to pickup the sound.

Can I play music through my iPhone without using CarPlay?

I might be wrong, but I think you are asking a different question than everyone is answering. If you phone is plugged into the unit via USB, you must use Apple Car Play to play the music. For example, on my GMC Acadia with OEM Car Play support, you can use Car Play or you can also play the music from the iPhone using the native stereo (Non Car Play) interface. On the AX1000 I have not found a way to listen to the iPhone music through the stereo unless you use Car Play or if you use Bluetooth. Hope this helps.

Heck ya...it works on Bluetooth just fine...The Apple Carplay just makes it look like your phone screen apps. And, Apple Carplay lets you text and navigate...you will not be able to do those things when you're not plugged in. Hope this helps.

Yes. I'm able to connect my iPhone via Bluetooth & stream music. No cable is needed . Also, this receiver has a gain setting available that allows you to increase/ decrease the input level.

Yes. It hooks up automatically through Bluetooth. You just won't have access to texts, phone, maps and such. Music works great!

Yes, it will play through Bluetooth if not connected via USB. If connected you can choose not to use CarPlay and just play music, not sure why you wouldn't want to though. The interface is very sleek, just installed on my son's 2005 Honda Accord

We live in a forest, xm very sketchy so I didn't do it, but I believe from the instructions you need a module. It's called "Siriusxm Connect Vehicle Tuner" and of course the xm antenna. It does have it on the screen as a touch option. Hope that helped.
    timorthy s  Nov 03, 2018

You'll need a tuner and antenna, usually sold together. Crutchfield has one here: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_220SXV300/SiriusXM-SXV300V1-Tuner.html

You'd need a SiriusXM tuner for it. However since the radio is Bluetooth I'd get the streaming service that way you can play it in the car as well as on the go

You need to add the SiriusXM tuner and the antennae (should you not have one)

This unit does not have "wireless" CarPlay. That feature is only available on a few high end units from Alpine and Pioneer. https://www.crutchfield.com/g_300/All-Car-Stereos.html?tp=5684#&nvpair=AG_iPod/iPhone%20Control|FFCarPlay_@Wireless@_
