Times have changed

Remember when you only had a radio in your car? How quaint. Smartphones are now the way we roll when we're driving, thanks to car stereos like Sony's XAV-AX5000 digital multimedia receiver. This Sony integrates beautifully with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto so you can access your media with easy-to-use icons and pages, and even use your voice to make commands so your eyes stay on the road. When you do sneak a peek, you'll be impressed by the clarity and color of Sony's new bezel-less 7" flat mirror LCD display. Sony knows how to build beautiful display screens, and I think this is one of the sharpest ones on the market.

Use your phone's nav functions with Android Auto (pictured) or Apple CarPlay.

The phone is the key

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto let you access your phone's content with the sound of your voice or the touch of a finger. This stereo's controls behave like your phone's interface, so there's no learning curve. Plug in your Android™ or iPhone®, and you'll get access to your navigation, phone calls, weather, text messages, and of course all your music. Get more info at www.apple.com/ios/carplay and www.android.com/auto.

Go wireless with Bluetooth®

Bluetooth enables wireless streaming for music, podcasts, and audiobooks, along with the convenience of hands-free phone calls. This Sony lets you enjoy all the content without plugging in when you get behind the wheel. You can install the included wired microphone close to you, so callers can hear you loud and clear.

Music — lots of music

If you groove to your favorite music services on your iPhone or Android, you'll dig playing music from Pandora and Spotify on this receiver. If you're looking for radio stations that won't fade away when you look for new adventures, add a SiriusXM tuner to this Sony to enjoy satellite radio's deep programming from coast to coast.

Smooth sound

This receiver also offers an impressive array of sound-sculpting controls, including a 10-band graphic equalizer and Dynamic Stage Organizer (DSO) which creates virtual speakers on your dash for better soundstaging. Supporting the soundshaping is the clear and natural sound of Sony's powerful Dynamic Reality Amp 2. The XAV-AX5000 also includes front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs for when it's time to add amplifiers to your system.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

This screen is a simple well functioning answer to someone who wants a hands free option. Android auto works well and allows me to keep my eyes on the road. The menus are easily navigated with big icons on screen as well. A knob for volume would probably be my preference but the buttons work well. Not a deal breaker. I also wish the background was more customizable. Maybe an update could add more background options. Not sure about the USB cables yet. I don't like the cables laying around my truck. They do give you more flexibility to place where you want them though. Once I get them mounted and organizwd, I'll feel better about them. Overall, this is a great addition to my 06 Titan. Very pleased!

Pros: Simple Menus Great sound Responsive screen

    Cons: Background options

Nice big touch screen, Car Play works great with my iPhone, and the EQ controls are really nice. This head unit helped my stock HK speaker system in my Subaru sound better. Only about 3 days in, but really happy with this Sony purchase! This is my 2nd purchase in car audio from Crutchfield and so far, I've been impressed. Crutchfield clearly researches the equipment needed to fit your car. Nice job and keep up the good work.

Great unit. Perfect to convert an old Radio to a fully functional apple car play. There were some tricky parts to understanding the directions for the steering wheel controls, but the tech support got us on track.

Pros: Functional easy to install, many features.

Cons: We debated about lack on knob for sound control, but that is how they are all going. Not a problem with steering controls.

    Great CarPlay radio

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I have always hated the factory stereo for the 2010-2012 Camaro's. I wanted to get a radio with Apple CarPlay since having it in other vehicles. I liked when I saw this Sony was a Double Din face but just a single din in the back basically. This made it easier to install. It was not necessary to modify the sub dash and left plenty of room for wiring and other install components. I got the PAC kit to keep more factory look and it came with install items to keep steering wheel controls. The radio itself works well whether using radio or CarPlay. There is not a lot of customization for background but there are a few different background color options which was fine with me. I got this basically for CarPlay and a better looking radio for the Camaro. It is just a basic, simple radio that works well with very little custmization

Pros: CarPlay, plenty of room for install components

    Cons: None so far

JThis is a very capable head unit. Although, when Apple Carplay is on and you receive a call, there is a lot of echo for the caller, but that doesn't happen when Apple Carplay is disconnected and it's simply Bluetooth. Also, the sound has improved dramatically, bringing new life to the OEM speakers.

Pros: Improved Sound. Apple CarPlay Apps. Hands free.

Cons: Slightly dim in sunny situations and Autodim doesn't work well. Echo with callers while using CarPlay.

I'm very happy with the radio, would be 5 stars but the album artwork is missing and customization options are limited. I'd rather be able to remove the icons and arrange by use, etc. The sound is an improvement over my factory vw system in VW Eos Komfort 2013. The install was easy and simple with the wiring preassembled by Crutchfield - worth the money!

I bought the Sony XAV-AX5000 a few months ago to put in my last car, and was very happy with it. I ended up replacing the car only a few months later, and bought another XAV-AX5000 for the new one. I love the clean face with just a flat screen and a thin strip for buttons at the bottom, and CarPlay works just wonderfully on it. I do wish I could rearrange/remove some of the icons on the main screen to remove XM radio, but that's really a minor thing since I usually go right into CarPlay. I used Crutchfield's ReadyHarness service, and it's worth every penny. I'm still waiting on an install date for new speakers all around in the car, so haven't been able to really test the head unit out, but even with the factory speakers it sounds great!

Pros: Simple flat screen, flush-mounted well in my Corolla. CarPlay works great

Cons: Would like to be able to hide unused icons

I chose Sony because I have always appreciated the simplicity of operation of Sony Electronics. If I want it to do something, the menus are easy to navigate to do what I want. As with all Sony devices I've owned in the past, operation is so simple I never need to refer to the manual - Very intuitive. What good are features if you have to stop the car and pull out a manual to figure out how to access them? Sound quality is good - I'm no audiophile, but it makes the factory speakers sound pretty good. CarPlay works fine and is easy to use. I'm considering buying another for another vehicle after experiencing this one. Brady on the Online Chat was awesome advising me on accessories. Made my install cleaner and easier.

    Pros: Intuitive interface

Cons: I would prefer a solid background to the wallpaper options available, but the standard options provided a nice enough background.

The install was very easy with the supplied Crutchfield instructions. I chose to have Crutchfield make the wiring harness, the best money I ever spent, I can't recommend that service enough. The unit went into a 2011 Ford F 250. I had to call Crutchfield once to get help on hooking into the factory sub, they answered quickly and solved the issue. The unit is great, very intuitive and easy to set up, I am not an experienced audiophile and it was no problem, the Apple CarPlay is great and worked seamlessly. Would buy again.

Pros: Easy install Easy setup Very intuitive

Cons: The wallpaper and customization is pretty generic

This radio replaced an aftermarket radio in my 1997 Corvette. The difference is unbelievable. Since the old one was aftermarket, the SONY went in easily. I won't mention the other brand, but the difference in sound is Night and Day. I should have spent the extra money in the first place. I highly recommend the SONY to anyone looking for a great sound and Android Auto.( Just be sure you have the correct USB cable) they re not all the same.

Pros: great sound and Android AUto.

Cons: None I can think of.

Sony has made a good stereo with minimal basic audio features but essential with focus on Android auto & Carplay. Occupies minimal space as the back of the stereo is the size of a single din. My main reason to go for this was 2 USB ports & in this price range. None from pioneer (which was my go to brand) provided 2 USB ports below $400. Android auto works great with my Galaxy S8+ & my wife's Galaxy S10. I can't stress enough CABLE , CABLE & CABLE !!! make sure you only use the cable which came with your phone or a very high quality cable (suggested in Android auto forums & on amazon as well). The less extensions/adapters you have between your stereo & the phone the better. Best to plug in your phone cable directly in to the stereo's USB port. This is no fault of SONY. Android auto projects on your stereo. It requires a high quality, good band with cable. Audio settings are minimal which is good. Extra bass , DSO & 10 band EQ, balance/fader, H & L passfilter. I am using it with factory speakers. Bluetooth audio & phone calls sounds good. No issues. I could keep my factory backup camera which was imp for me. Steering wheel controls works with an adapter. Screen is capacitive & bright enough for my needs. UI is plain. No frills. I hope they had more backgrounds & support for custom ones. USB2 is for your music stored in a USB flash drive. Make sure you format the drive with FAT32 or it won't work. Start time is fast which is great !! Overall great no fr

Pros: 1. 2 USB ports at this price point. 2. Looks OEM. 3. Simple UI. 4. Good sound. 5. Android auto works (with high quality cable). 6. Needs less space. 7. Nice capacitive screen with good brightness. 8. Basic but necessary audio settings. 9. Good radio reception (provided antenna turn on is connected).

Cons: 1. Limited & no custom backgrounds. 2. No way to quickly mute/turn off the sound. ATT just reduces the voulme. 3. No long press option to turn off the source you are listening too. 4. No album art support when music is played via USB drive. 5. Slow firmware updates.

I should have read the one star reviews before purchase and install. Shame on me. Sure it is pretty and can tune FM. That is about it. Purchased for Android Auto. It does not work, shame on Sony for no real world tests. Plenty of other reviews on line as well about this product's shortcomings. This has been going on for more than a year. Don't hold your breath for a magic bullet firmware update. I will try a couple of cables but based on the many online reviews this will be a waste of time. (All cables and phone that are used work fine in 2016 Silverado with mid level head unit) Now I will have to uninstall and return. USB flash drive support is generic, nothing special. Sound is ok, if you don't care about Android Auto probably an ok choice.

Pros: Sleek Sounds good Interface ok

Cons: Android Auto Fail USB flash support generic

The screen on this stereo is bright and easy to read only washes out in direct sunlight. Screen responds quickly to touch. Google maps look almost as good as on phone. Radio has two USB ports so I can plug in my flash drive and phone at the same time. Interface is basic but works fine. Radio has hard previous and next hard keys, Chassis is small so fit in easily with extra room . Stereo starts up quickly and annoying warning closes automatically. I did not need adapter for my steering wheel controls to work. USB music starts up quickly and easy to navigate. Sound quality is quite good better than stock radio and on par with Kenwood it replaced. (if none of these bother you it's a 5 star radio) The source icons cannot be rearranged even the SXM button for a service I don't have can't be removed. The hard keys are white and you cannot change color. The mic button (PTT) only works if Android auto or Apple carplay is running which means your phone must be plugged into USB (unlike most other radios). There is no quick way to switch between Android Auto and source screen like Kenwood and Pioneer. Android auto is very sensitive to USB cable, won't work with cables that work fine with my Kenwood including the one that came with the phone. PTT won't work with Axxes ASCW1 interface you must direct wire and learn functions on radio for it to work. Unfortunately I cannot tolerate the complicated source switching and no PTT over blue tooth. So it's going back for a another Kenw

Pros: The Screen!!! fast boot, 2 USB ports

Cons: No voice commands without USB connected, No Audio in

What a great upgrade from stock! I needed to get bluetooth in my 2004 Honda Element and also really like Apple Car Play in my 2018 Chevy Colorado ZR2 so this unit got me both. What I was really surprised at was the great sound and the increased radio reception. Wow! I live out in the country and didn't realize how many stations actually come in out there. This unit was super easy to use and looks great in the Element. Highly recommended.

Mark from Houston, TX on 5/6/2019

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I had originally given this unit a 3 star review because of connectivity issues with Android Auto. But, after speaking with Crutchfield technical support and doin a little research on the internet, I was able to narrow down the problem to the dash mounted USB extension I had purchased online. I also purchased the Crutchfield suggested Anker USB-C cable and connected it directly to the stereo USB connection and I haven't had a dropout since. I have did upgrade from 3 to 4 stars as it still is missing a lot of features that I would have liked in a unit at this price point. All in all, its a solid unit without all the flashy/gimmcky features that other units have.

Pros: Solid Sound, Dual USB connections, Minimalist display, Easy to use menus, Capacitive screen

Cons: Can only show video from USB on USB 1, which is the same USB to connect to Android Auto, so they cant be used at the same time, Equalizer turns off randomly, no USB backup for settings, so you better take note of your settings because they will reset to factory if power is cut (ex. changing out car battery), cant put custom backgrounds only 5 stock backgrounds to choose from.

This is by far the best aftermarket CarPlay upgrade money can buy, but it is short on customization and installation adjustments. It sticks about 1/2 inch from the dash using the factory brackets.

Pros: Beautiful display. Excellent touch response.

Cons: Display NOT visible at angles other than straight on. DOES NOT sit flush against the dash. No contrast or advanced video settings.

Overall nice head unit. Touch screen is very responsive. I bought for Android Auto functions and it's worked well for that purpose. AA has frozen a couple times on me, but just switching away and back gets it going again. I think this is the best bang for you buck if you are looking for an AA head unit.

Pros: Fast response, good touch panel, nice screen, good for Android Auto

I installed this unit into my 2014 Harley Davidson Street Glide. Once the proper wiring harness was ordered from an additional vendor (Crutchfield understandably does not stock the necessary wiring harness), the installation was smooth and easy. The radio looks fantastic and operates as expected. Apple Car Play is really cool and I am getting used to using it. I also added the Sirius XM satellite module which was also a snap to install. My only reservation regarding this unit is that the touch screen does not work with gloves on, and it is not waterproof for my application. Otherwise, it looks and sounds great right out of the box. Four stars because of the glove and waterproof issue. If you are not installing on a MC, five stars...

Pros: Full featured, easy to use touch screen interface

Cons: Not waterproof for my application. Touch screen does not work with a gloved hand

I will say this is as good as it gets. The radio reception for weak stations is remarkable. hooked up to my iPhone without have to do anything. Backup camera capable (which I use and it works great) I got this one because of these features. I thought that I'm getting this one because I don't remember the last time I played a CD and why pay for that feature when I know I don't need it. It will also hook up to an Android phone if I decided to get one. the second USB port is only for a flash drive I think . so you can't hook up 2 phones at the same time It looks like it came as a factory installed radio. The Axxera that it replaced doesn't hold a candle to this unit. Sony has many models to choose from. for me this is best I think because of 4 things 1) has the best reception for weak stations 2) has a second USB for a flash drive that you would pack full of MP3's 3) works excellent with an iPhone or an Android phone. 4) back up camera capable If these features are also important to you. You won't be disappointed . Thank you Shane for your help

Pros: radio reception, ease of use, It will look right at home in your dash, CarPlay and Android Auto,2 USB one for your phone and one for your MP3 player or flash drive, backup camera capable, hands free talk and text.

Cons: The only thing I was disappointed in was the second USB That one is limited on what that will do.

Bought this product few weeks ago. Works almost as expected, except one little detail. 16kHz frequency (in equalizer) adjustment is pointless, it does not make any difference (confirmed with 2 units in two different cars). Sound quality is not bad, however is does not blow your mind. It is not a head unit for audiophiles! It is for average user, who cares more about features like access to ApplePlay,AndroidAuto etc. I would appreciate if 16kHz freq. adjustment could be replaced with 12kHz, which is more useful - maybe in next firmware update? As for Crutchfield: all pieces of extra equipment (steering wheel module, backup camera volt reg, harness etc.) work fine and as expected. Fast shipping, definitely recommended!

Pros: responsive display fast quality design

Cons: 16 kHz band in equalizer does not work unable to upload wallpaper lack of features to USB2 (plays basically mp.3 no videos) album artwork are not displayed properly, jpeg file is not recognized

Awesome multimedia unit for my 2012 jeep JK ordered all necessary install parts from Crutchfield and installation was a breeze. The touch screen is responsive, the screen is clear and crisp. The only reason this unit gets four stars out of five is because it is "basic". I bought this unit to replace the stock radio in my jeep and to gain access to Appleplay and Bluetooth functionality which it does very very well. That being said that's all this head unit does is the basic things but it does them extremely well. if you're looking for an awesome replacement to a tired factory car stereo look no further than this one . But if you're looking for a car stereo with a lot of frills you might want to look at a higher price bracket . I am 100% satisfied with this radio but keep in mind I don't have amps, subs, or a back up camera.. nothing other than four speakers and this radio . But this unit can handle all of those things .

Pros: Screen clearity Screen responsiveness Ease of installation Overall functionality Price point

Got this Sony XAV-AX5000 unit a week ago, and got it installed in the car. The unit has a very clear and crisp 2-din screen and yet, behind it you have a 1-din unit, so you have plenty of room to organize wires and other accessories. Initial impressions were great: no knobs, the UI is responsive, and works great with Apple CarPlay. Most of the controls are simple but effective. Sony doesn't support WebLink compatible apps, so you cannot control apps like YouTube, Waze or Yelp on screen. And the sub pre-amp is mono only. All in all, I was happy with the purchase... until the very next day when I took the car out of the garage to drive around, on a cold but very bright winter day and I could barely see the navigation lines from the Apple or Google Maps app. On my car, the unit is mounted elbow height, so I while I could see most of the screen content behind the reflections of the shift, my elbow and passenger seat, I could barely see anything on the very light colored screen whenever the map app was open: there is way too much glare on this unit. Then there is no contrast settings to try to mitigate this. So unless your unit is added on the top of your dash, be prepared to be unable to use some of the features from the unit. I contacted Crutchfield and did an advanced replacement for a slightly pricier Kenwood unit that has both anti-glare AND screen angle adjustment. Wasn't for a simple contrast control, I could likely still be pretty happy with this Sony and give it a 4 star.

    Pros: 2-din screen on a 1-din unit (saves room for wiring); Clean visual, with no knobs or anything from the last decade; Responsive interface; Great connectivity with Apple CarPlay; Simple yet effective controls;

    Cons: No screen contrast settings; No custom wallpaper/background image; Excessive glare; Mono pre-amp sub out; Does not support WebLink compatible apps;

Great product. Loved the extra space it created to hide wiring. Would recommend. Waiting for Sony to provide a firmware to allow use of personal wallpapers. I would highly recommend the brackets to be sturdier. Used the metra ones that came with the bundle and they broke easily on me. Using paperclips to hold it in for now until I get new ones.

Pros: - Great boot time - Simplified menu - Great layout of options - Minimal clutter

Cons: - Wish more features came with product (wallpaper)

Installed to freshen up our 2009 Ford Edge. I'm impressed by this thing. Touch screen is very responsive. We're using the factory speakers, but this thing sounds so much better and has way more power than the factory unit. I'm in love with the Apple Car play. Only glitch I can find is the navigation voice directions don't seem to want to work after a call has been made, and I'm not sure if that's a setting in the phone I can't figure out, or the radio, but not enough of a problem to lose a star, as I'm guessing it's the phones fault anyways. Also, I can't get the dimmer to work when lights turn on. I had Crutchfield do the wiring harness, so one of these days I'll take it apart and see if they mis-wired it. Pretty easy to go in the menu and change the brightness real quick for now.

The supplied screws and clips cannot be installed as there is no way to attach the clip. Set-up was quick after a call to Crutchfield tech support (they are awesome) and a simple solder of the steering wheel controls module. One complaint, the Sony has 6 "registered devices" boxes on the Bluetooth set-up screen. There are no instructions for registering a device and if you have multiple phones as I do it is impossible to have both attached or registered with the unit. This is a problem as I have both personal and business cell phones and the ability to use both in a hands free method during the day was a major reason for purchasing this unit. Android Auto works great and is much better functionally than the Apple Car Play. Unit has a software update available and I'm hopeful that this will help with the Bluetooth registration problem. Overall I recommend this Stereo.

Pros: Good sound, easy to operate, lots of functionality.

Cons: Poor manuals, no ability to register multiple Bluetooth devices

I purchased this near the end of December and was able to install it in the 2nd week of January. Install was easy, the screen is beautiful and responsive, and the bezel-less display looks great when installed. But that's where the good part of this review ends. If you want to use this with Android Auto as your primary connection - LOOK ELSEWHERE. Constant disconnects, regardless of cable. The unit freezes and reboots out of nowhere when an Android phone is connected as well. There are multiple threads on Sony's site about this but all of their resolutions have been "check your power cable, restart the unit, factory reset the unit." I took advantage of Crutchfield's 60 day guarantee and exchanged it for the JVC KW-845M. Same phone, same connections, same cable and that unit is rock solid with Android Auto. Crutchfield is awesome. This Sony - not so much. Just an additional note for anyone using a SiriusXM tuner with this unit as well - it is not as fully functioned as other units in this price range. It's basically a simple screen with the channel info and that's it. Other units have TuneStart, artist and song alerts, sports score alerts, album art and other extra features.

    Pros: Nice Screen

    Cons: Everything Else

Great radio if you do not intend to use android auto. Does not stay connected and is a widely known issue that Sony refuses to admit or correct. The unit itself is beautiful. The response time of the screen is amazing. The sound is quite good and the power is impressive. Android auto is a HUGE issue tho.

This head unit has the potential to be great. I bought it for android auto and unfortunately will not work with the current android operating system. I had an older galaxy s6 and plugged it up and android auto came on but would keep dropping and reconnecting. I paid for a custom install and now I'm stuck with this junk! Sony needs to get this problem solved! I wish I had done more research on this radio that I've invested to much money in and wasted. Crutchfield is awesome to do business with and they should pull this unit from the shelf until sony gets it fixed. Don't make the same mistake I did!

2006 Nissan Titan, Samsung S7 phone. Things you should know if you purchase this unit. 1. Voice commands do not work with Bluetooth on this unit. Voice commands only work when your phone is plugged into the USB and using Android Auto. 2. Only one phone can be paired at a time with this unit. Each time you want to use the Bluetooth, you must go through the pairing process again if someone else had paired their phone with the receiver. 3. You can program 6 favorites on the screen for phone calls but the 6 favorites remain the same no matter which phone is paired with the receiver. My wife and I share this truck and it becomes a pain to either plug in the phone each time or have to pair the phone again. 4. Major connection issues with the USB to use Android Auto. I spent lots of time talking to Crutchfield techs and a few hours searching the internet for answers. First, use the original Samsung wire that came with the phone. Second, go into developer mode on your phone. (Settings, Software information, Tap Build number 7 times, back to Settings, Developer Options.) Find USB debugging and turn it on. After doing all of this, it finally connected to Sony with the Android app running. 5. Next problem - not receiving texts or being able to text to speech. Download Textra app and use that as the default app for texts. Follow the instructions and it works. Had I known about these issues, I would have selected a different receiver.

Pros: Touch Screen is accurate and responsive, Sounds and looks great, Easy installation, Powers up quickly. Crutchfield techs are very patient. They did their best to satisfy me.

Cons: I don't like how you have to connect your phone to the USB to use voice commands. Other stereos allow this function through Bluetooth. Other stereos also allow you to Bluetooth more than one phone at a time. Only 5 choices for wallpaper and I don't think you can upload your own. Major connection issues at least with my phone. No volume knob.

I ordered this unit because it was clean and simple looking and has a capacitive touchscreen. More importantly, it has Android Auto/Apple Carplay. Unfortunately, the Android Auto implementation in this unit is flawed. There is a misconfiguration with the USB connection and it will frequently drop/eventually restart Android Auto. I know this is a problem with this unit because I have a Pioneer head unit in my other car where Android Auto performs flawlessly. Sony hasn't sufficiently acknowledged this issue, promised an update or suggested they are working on it. I would give this thing 4-5 stars easy if that worked as it is otherwise pretty great.

Pros: Slick capacitive touchscreen Simple clean design No optical drive so low profile footprint

Cons: Android Auto is broken for the newest Android phones (Android 9)

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I was wanting a unit that would integrate Apple CarPlay to my older 2004 Toyota Tundra. The main thing I wanted the unit to have was a larger capacitive touch screen that looked and felt really nice (like a tablet or smartphone screen). Some of the pressure sensitive screens I had seen in stores just felt terrible and looked pretty bad to boot. So after doing the research I arrived at the Sony unit which hit on both my biggest items, CarPlay and the screen. For my main requirements this unit has been great so far! But ... My wish list for this to be 5 star: Would be nice to be able to arrange or remove icons that are not being used (Sirius XM, etc) and/or at least move the icons that you do use all the time to the first screen and relegate the less used icons to the second screen that you have to swipe to. Would be nice to have more options for wall paper and/or customizable wall papers. Sure wish it had an AUX connection built in. Odd functionality of USB1 and USB2: The USB1 connection allows for phone connection (Carplay or Android Auto) and usb stick that will play video and audio formats. USB2 allows for usb stick, but will ONLY play audio files and NOT video formats? What? Why? For my use case, I really want to just use USB1 for my iPhone and CarPlay all the time and have a USB stick in USB2 all the time from which I'd like to play either music or movies but this is not possible for video. Hoping for a firmware fix on

Pros: Nice big capacitive touch screen, looks great, feels great to the touch. Glass screen, not pressure sensitive plastic feel like other non-capacitive screens. Apple Car Play Android Auto Decent Equalizer USB plays audio and video files from USB

Cons: No customization of home screen Would be nice to have more options for wall paper and/or customizable wall papers. Wish it had an AUX connection built in. Odd functionality difference of USB1 and USB2 The right side black bezel of the unit is wider than the left. Sure this is a nit pick but it's just odd. Why? I have noticed this on a similar Pioneer unit also, but why?

When I purchased my new stereo and accessories for my truck I looked all over the internet. And Crutchfield kept coming back up each time. They have fantastic customer support and were very helpful when I needed info on what to order and what to expect. My items arrived and were exactly as stated on their website. I spent a few extra bucks to have them custom wire a harness and was worth every last dime of it. My installation due to the help of Crutchfield took less than two hours to install. I will most definitely purchase from them again.

Pros: Apple car play. I love it.

Cons: None really. Just a few minor things on the stereo itself but sony would need to release a firmware to allow you to change some things around.

Way more power than factory head unit, FM reception seems comparable, Bluetooth calling is easier and better quality. Loving Apple CarPlay, I don't have a dedicated GPS unit and it was a pain navigating with a phone in the cup holder, but the large screen is awesome. Purchased this as a gift for my wife. She was looking for the ability to use bluetooth, carplay and SiriusXM. Went with this over other options due to the capacitive touch screen, also including android auto and other good reviews. Got it all wired up with a Metra harness, antenna adapter, SXV300, dash kit for the subaru and AXXESS SWC-1. Works like a charm with Android Auto, Carplay and Sirius with great sound compared to stock. My only issue with the unit is the length of the screws. Sony has to know that most mounting will be via a Metra kit, which is undoubtedly plastic and more than likely around the same thickness so why are the screws so freaking short? I had to dremel out the Metra mounting holes to bevel the edges to give the screws enough room to thread into the receiver chassis. Maybe that's something that can be addressed with Metra or that Crutchfield can put as a note for certain dash kits.

Pros: Beautiful screen, great touch response, great sound out of the box.

Cons: Screws are too short to fit a standard Metra mounting kit.

Works well, responsive to inputs, good AM and FM reception, plenty of power for the car. Bluetooth commands are sluggish. Only real complaint is the look of the menus and screens. Looks like Sony got their inspiration from DOS. They could have spent an extra few minutes and at least picked a better font in plain white. Maybe a background color other than black. The menu team worked about 15 minutes and then headed out for a long lunch. Too bad.

At the time of this writing, I've used the Sony XAV-AX5000 product for a few days now and am really enjoying it! This was a welcome upgrade from an aging Pioneer AVH-5600 (Pre-Apple CarPlay) that I originally installed in my 2004 RAV4. The capacitive touch display augments the control layout and is a welcome step-up from the older resistive display touchscreen. I can't speak for Android integration, but Apple Car-Play works very well! The recommended wiring harness and steering wheel control kits worked without a hitch as well. USB output can handle charging the larger iPhones such as the 6S-Plus (which was an initial concern). Additional music was loaded onto a 32GB USB Flash drive (fat32) and was able to play MP3 and FLAC with no issues observed (Note: As the unit has 2-USB ports, read the capabilities and limitations of each before purchasing so you'll know what to expect). I've not attempted to play video, nor do I currently have a backup camera connected. There are a few minor annoyances that I'm sure can be corrected with a firmware update: 1) The time drifts erratically - sometimes hours per day. No other settings appear to have issues, so I'm suspecting this is clock-specific. 2) On startup, the unit appears to always default to the Car-Play screen, despite blindly playing the last used source (such as USB device). This leaves you switching between sources to find out out how to stop the playback. 3) Not a requirement, but the radio RDS information app

Pros: - Nice looking good sized display. - Capacitive touchscreen is wonderful. - Great Apple Car-Play integration. - All recommended accessory kits worked without issue (Wiring Harness, Steering Wheel, etc). - Good EQ. - Sounds pretty good despite using stock speakers and integrated amp.

Cons: - Time settings drift. - Display doesn't default to the last played source upon startup (if phone is plugged-in), but still plays where it left off, leaving you to hunt for what's playing.

Awesome upgrade over the previous upgrade which was a JVC KW-R910BT. This is was in my college daughter's 2000 Honda CR-V. The USB cables from the AX5000 we just ran out through the ashtray. We also tied the AX5000 handbrake and ground wires together instead of trying to hook it up to the handbrake (which seemed dumb in any case). I only used four screws and the radio housing from the "installation extras" so I purchased a lot more than I needed. The Android Auto interface with the touchscreen is now just as good in the 2000 Honda as it is in my new 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Limited.

I bought this radio because my older Sony radio would not work correctly with my new phone and I didn't want to change all if the wiring harnesses so..another Sony. It is definitely an improvement. Everything works perfectly and the sound is great. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars us because you can't turn off the sound. If you press the home key, whatever was playing last keeps playing. There may be a way but it isn't obvious and I haven't researched it yet. Only way I can stop it is to press the XM radio icon. Since I don't have an XM tuner, it stops playing. The Android audio works flawlessly. Other than small issue with turning off radio, Love it.

Ok started to look for systems on Amazon , no price advantage, thinking about ability to make a phone call and get expert experienced advice. Awesome choice, the team at Crutchfield were totally helpful. Ended up replacing the Sony radio 2008 technology with 2018 technology. just spliced in new plug and wow beautiful installation. Crutchfield is the only way to go! made my job 1000% less painful. Thanks Crutchfield Oh love the radio, no complaints.

    Pros: Wiring piece of cake

Cons: Needed to be clever to get the interface between Sprinter panel and new radio.

This unit does everything it says it does. I replaced the old stock Toyota Tacoma Radio with this. Installation was a snap. I had some issues with screws in radio kit working with plastic dash kit but worked with Oakley at Crutchfield. All I can say is a radio is a radio....it's the company and service that will keep me a loyal customer. Great product and great experience.

Pros: Easy to install. Sounds great. Hands free works great

Cons: Had a little trouble with dash kit but worked it out by getting some longer M8 screws

This review is geared towards harley guys looking as there are a bunch of car reviews... Great unit for use in Harley 2014+ batwing bikes. I swapped out my 2014 flhtk Boom 6.5gt for this and sold my boom for more than the sony cost me, win win. As other reviews state, the screen does wash out in sunlight, nature of the beast. Also wallpaper is choice of 5 colors, no big deal to me. I use black or orange... functionality is good, but I really only wanted fm tuner and android ability to use my apps for navigation as HD proprietary gps wants $150 for each update and no guarantee maps are actually updated. Def get the scosche install kit, want available on Crutchfield when I purchased, but makes install trouble free. I did mount my mic into fairing; it's fine when bike is off, but not when running, understandable. Overall, if you have the 4.3 or 6.5, I'd upgrade and break even if you sell oem head unit. True, unit isnt "waterproof", I haven't rain tested as of yet but it's a risk I'm willing to take. Thumb controls are slightly different but it just may be how my settings are "set". I am not a professional audiophile, there may be better radios etc but for us batwing fairing guys our options are limited but this fits the bike nicely.

Pros: Fitment, price, value, app connectivity. Android auto, apple CarPlay, etc

    Cons: Unknown

I bought it for it's large responsive screen and apple carpkay. On those ends, it delivers well. What could be improved? It dues not take the "Voice" command from a wire Rennie control (steering wheel controls). So you cannot invite Siri or Google Assistant with a steering wheel button. "Hey Siri" will work instead and the Options physical button on the unit will with a long press will also invoke it. There is no way to remove unused Sources like SiriusXM from the screen, or reorder the source list. Only one USB port will connect with a smart phone. The second one is just for a thumb drive. Who does that? I would trade it for an AUX Jack.

    Pros: Large responsive screen

Cons: Dimming responds to headlight on, but not to manual adjustment No AUX in Can't remove SiriusXM from available sources

This was a huge quality of life upgrade for our minivan, which didn't have bluetooth previously. Now we have a much safer and simpler way to access navigation, phone calls, and music on the go!

Pros: Responsive, tons of features, easy setup once installed.

Cons: The screws it came with were too short for the Crutchfield-supplied mounting bracket. USB cables are permanently attached to the unit, so it was a lot harder to run the cables in the car.

Was worried about the graphics, but it is pretty vanilla which is what I wanted. I am kicking myself for not doing this sooner.

So far very pleased with this purchase. Once updated with the latest firmware, the interface and sound quality is very good. I bought this unit because it looked to offer the simplest experience in it's use. I didn't need all the bells and whistles that I'd never find time to use that most of the other units at this price point offer. However, this is my one criticism of the unit. Some of it is TOO simple. Using the SiriusXM tuner, it doesn't offer artwork while playing, or an easy way to input channels. You have to scroll through them one by one. CarPlay is great however, and has been performing flawlessly.

Pros: CarPlay, Ease of use, fast to boot.

Cons: Some text can be a little small on the screen. No artwork or advanced SiriusXM control.

Great head unit - sound quality is good, the UI is easy to use, and the Android Auto integration is great. I knock off one star because it forces you to click through an agreement that you won't fiddle with it while driving every single time it boots up, which is pretty annoying. Installation was pretty easy with the Crutchfield Ready Harness, although I did have to splice into my parking brake cable to get it to work (it won't allow initial setup without detecting the parking brake is engaged.)

    Pros: Easy install, nice UI.

Cons: Annoying requirement to click through a warning each time you start.

Great bang for the buck... And that's how I'm basing my 5 stars on. It's actually a middle of the line receiver. Not the best, to be honest with you. But to get that kind of compatibility with my iPhone is wonderful. If you have the 12.0 or greater iOS, you can have things like Google Maps and Waze as your navigation source. If you don't know about this, it's a great upgrade to the crappy Apple maps. This deck (head unit) does what you need it to do. No one buys CDs anymore, so no need for that. So, it plays music, streams pandora, iHeart or plays my music off my iPod. It gives me great navigation, and a decent sound. If you're an audiophile, this is not the unit for you. It has a modest EQ, and with only 2 volts pre-out, you're going to be struggling to get good sound quality with an amp. But, just off the shelf, for your normal guy or gal, it's wonderful!!!

Pros: Great screen, very responsive, Great third party apps like Waze and Google Maps.

Cons: Sound quality is adequate, EQ and Crossover are rudimentary.

Reasonably happy with the unit now but getting it all setup and getting used to the annoyances took some effort. Unit is very responsive and the screen is bright. It washes out only under the worst lighting conditions. Startup is very fast, 3-4 seconds at most. The unit is ready to go by the time you put on the seat belt. The annoying legal disclaimer that users of earlier versions complain about disappears after a few seconds by itself and doesn't impede functionality like backup camera. Android Auto works really well especially the integration with Assistant and multiple music apps. Sound is great, loud and crisp. Steering wheel controls work just fine. Installation is painful. Supplied screws are 5 mm long sheet metal screws. The Crutchfield supplied (plastic) mounting bracket is 2.5 mm thick. The holes in the unit are 2.5mm recessed. That means a trip to the local home improvement store to buy 1/2" #10 sheet metal screws. By far the worst are the supplied USB cables. They are soldered into the unit and therefore not user replaceable. And they are loose. I tried 8 separate micro-USB cables to interface to my phone and none would keep a connection for more than two minutes and only if the car didn't move. Took a piece of aluminum stock, electrical tape, shrink tubing and zip ties to ensure a solid connection. Now it's ugly but working. FM reception is notably worse than the stock radio. Customization is very limited and poorly thought through.

Pros: Responsive, easy to read touchscreen. Great sound. Android Auto works very well. Good integration of steering wheel controls. Hands-free phone feature makes for very clear conversations.

Cons: Terrible USB connectors. Unusable sheet metal screws for mounting the unit. Poor FM reception. Very limited customization options. Backup camera guidelines cannot be adjusted when in reverse which is the only time most backup cameras are powered on.

Good android auto unit for decent price, but not perfect: + Big screen, worth the sacrifice of volume knob from previous XAV-AX100 in my opinion (although I did retain steering wheel controls, so I don't use the head unit volume buttons anyway) + Android auto works as advertised and launches automatically when device is plugged in + Reliable bluetooth connection -- seamless switch when you enter the car, even switches if already on a phone call + Classy (although simple) interface and design that isn't tacky and blends in well + Fast boot time, safety message closes automatically - Although the screen is capacitive (improvement over resistive, I'm sure), it's still not perfectly responsive, and I think it should've been better considering that's one of the product's main selling points over the XAV-AX100 - No custom wallpaper, with only 5 boring options - Be aware that if your vehicle-specific harness doesn't have the matching orange/white wire for illumination, the Sony unit CANNOT be set to dim automatically and must be changed basically every day if you drive both day and night. I wish it just let you program time intervals where it would switch automatically. The only reason you should consider this is for Android auto/Apple CarPlay, for which I would recommend it. It's not perfect but neither are the other options, many of which are more expensive. If you use the unit primarily for these smartphone-powered features, it's easier to look

A real disappointment both in terms of quality and features. -Very slow response when browsing USB drive. Annoying if not outright dangerous while driving. -No album art on USB drive. -No search ability / poor sorting of USB files. -Display has no adjustment for brightness or contrast to help with poor viewing angle. Screen always looks washed out. -Can't use custom wallpapers. -Can't rearrange or remove input icons from home screen. -Screen resolution is a bit low so everything looks fuzzy. Especially noticeable on Android Auto. -Volume for music and for voice prompts (navigation) are two separate settings and the only way to adjust the volume for voice prompts is to try to catch it while it is speaking. Because volume settings are independent, you have to manually adjust voice prompt volume relative to your music; there isn't a master volume that turns everything up/down. -In most newer cars a bluetooth phone connection will interrupt your music and read incoming messages aloud. The AX5000 is missing this completely. Texts are only available through Android Auto and notifications are very inconsistent. -One day there was no sound on any input channel. Crutchfield tech support had me perform a factory reset which did restore the sound but erased all settings. This is a problem that shouldn't be happening at all, and I'm very concerned about it happening again. The Sony XAV-AX5000 feels very much

    Pros: -Good sound -Nice looking

Cons: -Laggy interface on USB -Lacking some basic features common elsewhere -System errors requiring master reset -Lack of customization

A beautiful addition to our car - 2015 Corolla. The audio features are very good. But ...... one of the reasons I upgraded our Joying car radio was to get the higher quality screen of a mainstream product like Sony. I'm disappointed to say this Sony screen is no better. In fact, it might be a little worse. The daytime brightness is very poor. And with the slick touchscreen, there is glare. There are many times during the day, here in sunny Arizona, when the screen is almost invisible. Sure wish there was a way to try these head units in the car before the purchase. I got the urge to try this type of GPS after seeing a friends factory unit on his new Chevy. A very bright screen that was easily readable in the daytime. As our current leader would say - sad!

Pros: Great sound with many audio inputs.

    Cons: Poor screen visibility.

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The Sony XAV-AV5000 is a perfect match for my 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata LS. The matte finish of the SONY compliments the interior of the Miata. I had previously replaced the stock Bose with a JVC KW-R910BT from Crutchfield. The JVC never really looked good in the car because of the shiny plastic and giant silver volume knob. It sounded OK and I wired the harness myself (not well). Now that IOS 12 supports third party GPS apps (I like Waze), I was ready to upgrade. I have the XAV-AV100 in my Honda Element and like it so I thought I would go for the new SONY. One of the big issues with the Miata, is there is almost no room to work in. It took me hours to get the JVC installed and never did a great job. I opted for the Crutchfield ReadyHarness for this install. If you look at the pictures I uploaded, you can see how small the SONY is compared to the stock Bose. This made the install, along with the ReadyHarness, a snap. It took me 15 minutes to install the SONY. It was harder to get the JVC out than to put the SONY in. Right now I have the USB cables going into the glove box because it was easy. When I have more time, I will run the smart phone USB into the console compartment. The sound quality is excellent. Much better than the JVC. The screen is very responsive to touch and fairly bright. With the top down and the sun hitting the screen, it can be a little washed out but so is my iPhone on the dash. At night, the dimmer is a must.

Pros: Great iOS CarPlay integration Big Screen Screen Responsive to Touch Easy to fit in a Miata Great Sound AM/FM Station auto-programming is fast Intuitive Controls EQ is easy to set

Cons: Cannot update the wallpaper like the XAV-AV100 Can't hide icons on the home screen like the Sirius XM icon (I don't have that)

Super easy to use and understand interface. Back up cam looks better than the stock head unit. Plenty of power to make the door speakers hit a little harder and sound clearer. Everything plugged right in including my powered sub. The supplied remote is nice if you're ever in the back seat or have want to let someone else press the skip.

Pros: Easy to use Two USB's Remote Bright clear screen with auto dimming

Cons: Does not work with Axxess steering wheel control module and the built-in control module in the Sony unit (2016 Subaru). I had to buy a Maestro brand steering wheel adapter for my stock steering wheel buttons to work. This was after many different calls and having the installed reviewed by two car audio experts. Also, many different ways to wire/set up steering wheel buttons. And finally, I don't like that I can't move or change where the inputs are on the screen.

Excellent update to my 2005 Camry. Got all the add on wire connectors and pre-fabricated harnesses as well as the trim. Everything came out just like the instructions said, and the new install all just plugged in and bolted down with no problems. Very painless upgrade. Operationally it is great. When my phone is plugged into he USB CarPlay comes up automatically and makes interaction smooth. Some applications take a few moments to come up like Pandora, but I blame Apple for that. I haven't tried loading in new backdrops, but it seems straightforward enough. I have not added a back up camera yet, but may in the future.

Pros: CarPlay works as promised. Easy installation. Controls are very intuitive. Steering wheel adapter works great.

Cons: Maybe needs a front USB, not necessarily a full size.

Just installed the Sony XAV-AX5000 so this is more a first glance review. The unit UI is very clean and intuitive. Controls and options seems to be on the simple side. Apple CarPlay (with a compliant cable) works great. Will update further after more daily use of the unit.

    Pros: Simple, straight forward UI

    Cons: No mute button

Great unit but not cheap. I got it because I wanted something that would mirror apps from my iPhone - mainly Maps and Messages. I'm happy with these features but there are just a few minor things that I don't love. When plugged in (USB), using Car Play and making a call, there are no Mic Gain or Speech Quality settings to adjust. These features only work if connected via Bluetooth. Also, I wish I could read my messages, not just hear them read. When displaying Sirius, the clock is tiny - almost too small to see. Other than that, the unit works great. The layout is simple and intuitive.

Pros: Easy interface. Car Play w/ iPhone connected works well.

Cons: I wish there were more display options. No mic settings while using Car Play. A bit more customization would be nice.

I installed this unit in my Honda Civic 2014. There are definitely pros and cons to this unit. It works very well with Android auto (the main reason I bought it). But the software is extremely basic. Just know that when buying. The wallpaper is locked down, the customization options are really limited if they even exist. Some basic tweaks like a timed dimmer, extra steering wheel controls and so on aren't there. Navigating the UI can also be cumbersome. I recommend using Android auto or car play as much as you can. The screen is ok, I find the brightness option a little annoying. With the dimmer off it can be a little too bright and at night with the dimmer on it can be over powering and way too bright. My first road trip I felt blinded by the light. With that said you get a great little package for the price. I also highly recommend purchasing the wiring harness completed by Crutchfield. It makes it SO much easier. Working with the Crutchfield reps on the phone is amazing, they speak English and are very friendly and helpful. Bottom line, great simple device for the price. If you need more, venture further or before Sony for a software upgrade. My review is based on the firmware 1.01 (latest from Sony as of 9/18)

Pros: -android auto works perfectly -does what it needs to do -simple and straight forward

Cons: -no customizations -dimmer can be too bright at night and no options to adjust -UI is sloppy -screen is average at best -limit to one camera -no HD Radio -cannot customize button locations -Cannot change to custom wallpaper -nkt a huge fan of the buttons and chin

Pros: Good integration for both Android and Apple CarPlay. Screen is responsive and comparable to a cell phone screen. Menus are simple to use. AM/FM reception good overall. Cons: If running a power hungry source like a navigator app in the background, phone may not fully charge at the same time. USB connector for additional music storage needs some fiddling with the format to get it working right. Metra dash kit for the jeep wrangler needs some work to get it flushed right. Would be nice if you could type or use voice commands to search and play songs; although this is more of a limitation from the app developers.

Major upgrade even if you have OEM navigation.

Pros: Apple CarPlay means you always have the latest map information, unlike OEM navigation which means an annual software update that the dealer charges an arm and a leg for. Load time is quick, screen is bright, and the unit is very responsive.

Cons: Distortion noise with Apple CarPlay for certain songs when navigation instructions speak over the music. Not sure if this is a unit problem or Apple CarPlay problem.

Nice overall radio. This is the only radio that would fit with no customization in my 04 Buick Lesabre where I could have a screen to install a back-up camera. I didn't like how the usb cord was attached to the radio instead of just haveing a USB port on the back of the radio. I put a flash drive in USB port 2 for music when I don't have my phone attached and the unit will only recognize so many songs and there is no way to shuffle them, unlike in my other car with a flash drive installed. I like the radio overall and these are minor things and it is an improvement over my pioneer 560BT. It is nice to have a backup camera and CarPlay and truly brings this old car up to more modern standards.

    Pros: Back up camera CarPlay

    Cons: Flash drive abilities.

This unit replaced the Insane Audio unit in my Jeep JK. Install was simple once brace in dash was cut out. Plug and play, worked fine with my factory Infinity system. Carplay is awesome with my iPhone, sure it's the same with Android. So nice to have the iPhone maps on the screen and no longer have to put up with outdated nav maps. Rearview camera works fine with it and looks great. Call quality seems fine. If you don't need CD or DVD capability it's hard to beat this unit for the money.

Pros: Carplay is great, easy install, plug and play, sounds great.

Cons: None yet. Had issue with clock time always changing but i had settings wrong, it was setting time to RDS signal. Works fine now.

Great CarPlay radio helping bring my old truck into the modern era. It has all the basics of a good unit with good sound and easy to use interface.

Pros: - Fit the vehicle perfectly without any modification to the dash radio compartment - perhaps the only DDin player that would fit into this space without modification of any kind. - Bright and responsive touchscreen - Good but basic menu with simple interface - Available backup camera input works well - The firmware can be updated which will possibly yield future enhancements

Cons: - The mounting screws with the radio were too short for the Metra Dash Kit mounts. - Bluetooth - even with a +6 boost level produces a volume level well below the level of the other inputs. - Remote control appears to be a generic Sony remote with many confusing extra buttons which serve no purpose on this radio - No HD Radio - No clear cover art picture showing on played songs - just a hazy background image of the cover - No way to edit or rearrange icons - Cannot upload a b

Great head unit for the price. I replaced the stock radio on a FJ Cruiser with JBL audio and sub. Only replaced the head unit and kept the old speakers and the difference in sound quality was unbelievable. First time putting a head unit, took me around 4 hours for the whole process. Instructions were very clear, installation gear suggested by Crutchfield was extremely useful. Now I'm enjoying great sound and the joy of CarPlay & Android Auto. Would highly recommended this unit.

I own an 2012 F150 Lariat (without factory Sony sound system) and purchased this unit as a replacement. I went through two units for the same issue and a new issue. One the USB would not recognize any phone plugged into the USB (iPhone or Android), and the screen flickered and essentially went black screen. It also would not recognize Android Auto in USB mode. In addition, when making calls...the receiving party could hear me but I could not hear them even with the volume maxed. This occurred with both units. Even after a firmware update.

Pros: Nice screen if it works.

    2012 Subaru Outback

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I was looking for a stereo upgrade for my 2012 Subaru Outback. This unit had all the features I wanted which were Apple Carplay, backup camera support, bluetooth, and a nice big touch screen. I considered last year's Sony model (the XAV-AX1000) but decided to wait when I read that the touch screen was not the best. I got this unit along with the wiring harness, the AXXESS steering wheel control module, the adapter cable for the antenna, and the dash mount kit. Not having done this for some time, it took me longer than I expected to get everything working. But once I did get it all connected, the unit worked fine with the camera, the iPhone, and the steering wheel control. It can also stream via bluetooth and has a second USB for a thumbdrive with music. One challenge was the axxess adapter. I had to update the firmware and select the specific radio make (Sony) in order to work. The wires on the back of the Sony are not pre-striped and are bit shorter than I would like. Also, the screws that come with the unit to screw into the dash mount kit were really short. I also tried the Sony remote that came with the unit but couldn't get it to work though I didn't really have a need for it.

    Pros: Sony quality, Crutchfield support

    Cons: Short wires, short screws.

Excellent Head Unit. Like all Sony, the interface is simple, logical, and classy looking, no cheesy graphics. Apple CarPlay works perfectly. Having the wiring kit pre-wired by Crutchfield is worth every penny, made installation a breeze. The only downer was the plastic dash kit that was included, it was really cheap and poorly made. I wish Crutchfield would offer a better brand name kit like Metra or Scosche (which is what I ended up buying from another distributor).

However, the sound quality is just the same with the original factory audio I had on my 2014 Buick enclave. No better, No worse. Exactly the same. My purpose on buying this was to use Android auto, so I don't mind that much.. but If you are planning to buy this expecting better sound quality than what you have, don't bother... In short, I love this thing. The bigger screen and simple interface are exactly what I was looking for and make the car feel more user friendly. The Bluetooth connects soo much quicker than the stock unit and the capacitive screen looks awesome. The reflections can be a little hard on the eyes in certain lighting angle, even with my 5% tint, but I didn't find it to be too much of an issue on my 7 hour road trip. Apple Car Play works better than expected and I find myself using that more than anything else. It's very intuitive although I do hate how limited it is. Apple maps is pretty good, all things considered, but once 3rd party maps are allowed in IOS 12, it will be a game changer. The stock rear view camera on the bigger screen is just a stretched image but I find it way more useful. Android Auto has been extremely finicky for me. I have an S7 for work that I want to use to run WAZE and I can't get AA to work for more than 10-15 minutes before it starts timing out and I have to disconnect and reconnect to see if it will even work. I am on the 3rd different cable and I am not sure if that's the headunit or the phone though so I am not dinging the unit for that. When it does work, it's awesome and exactly the reason I wanted this unit. Along with the PAC unit, programming the steering wheel controls makes it far less noticeable that there isn't a volume knob. Quick note for Mazda owners, the commander knob and surrounding buttons will not work. Rear view cameras will

While overall I am satisfied with the Sony XAV-AX5000, I am just that: merely satisfied. This is a solid head unit; the core functionality is here and works well. But there are so many nagging issues, I can't give it more than three stars. If you are looking for a no-fluff head unit with Android Auto, and aren't picky like me, you will probably love this head unit.

Cons: -Button backlight color can't be changed -Button backlight can't be turned off -Icons on home screen can't be rearranged -Sirius XM icon can't be removed or moved -No one-touch way to turn off sound -Mounts with sheet metal screws -Head unit sticks out 1cm from dash of Subaru BRZ -Screen bezels aren't symmetric Limited options for customization

Really love the clean look and no-frills user interface! Starts up fast and the touchscreen is very responsive. Looks like OEM in our 2005 Mercedes SLK. Apple Play is very handy for nav, texts, etc using Siri voice commands. Crutchfield support was super responsive and knowledgeable!

I bought this unit because GA is now starting the hands free law on July 1st. It works great and it does much more than what I expected. The user interface is very clean and simple and easy to use.

Pros: Apple Carplay and XM ready. Was able to retain my steering wheel controls

Cons: Only con I can think of is when you swipe through the FM presets it changes the channel you are listening to something else. I think you should be able to scroll through the presets while listening to a channel that is on the first page.

Put this unit into my 1996 Buick Roadmaster that I'm refurbishing/restoring. Fairly straight forward install, AND left lots of room behind the radio to store some surplus cords and the Sirius interface. Had to spend some extra time to get the supplied mounting brackets to get the radio mounted straight.

Pros: This Sony has about all of the "new" features that are on my 2015 GMC truck.

Cons: Mounting bracket screws were too short--had to dig for some longer ones. Also would have liked to had this unit CD compatible.

Installed in a 2005 Chevy Tahoe with Bose / no nav. Installation was fairly painless with the appropriate wiring harness which I got pre wired from Crutchfield ("ready harness" - totally worth the money). Headunit looks great, sounds fantastic even with the stock speakers. Phone calls work great, CarPlay is fantastic. Overall very happy with the purchase and the experience with Crutchfield. Did a great job bringing my older vehicle up to snuff with modern day amenities for Nav\phone\streaming. Heads up - when using the PAC RP5-GM11 wiring interface - you have to use the pioneer setting vs the Sony setting to maintain your steering wheel controls.

Pros: -Responsive screen -Apple CarPlay -Works better than new stock systems

    Cons: None to date

This is really nice, a huge upgrade over the factory unit in my 2014 Mazda CX-5. In addition to the snappy touchscreen and advanced connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, I really appreciate that the case does not take up more space behind the touchscreen than it needs. The only ding is that, strangely, only one device can be connected via bluetooth. So family vehicles that could previously accommodate multiple devices and switch between them depending on who was in the car are now restricted to only one. It's a head scratcher that might be a deal breaker for some.

Pros: Clean interface. Snappy touchscreen. CarPlay!

Cons: Only allows one device to be stored in the bluetooth profile and does not respond gracefully when it doesn't find that device.

It's a basic unit with a very nice screen; not much customization. The screen does well in sunlight and not as many finger show as my Kenwood unit. It does everything it's supposed to do and it sounds great. The 2V preamp output didn't give me any issues. You can get much better value elsewhere, but the features it does have are exceptional.

Pros: Nice screen. Sound quality. Ease of use.

Cons: Lack of features and customizations.

I like this head unit a lot, It's got a clean and simple operating system. Reading the reviews, some people might find that a flaw but that's what attracted me most to purchase it. One thing I would have liked would be HDRadio but outside of that Apple CarPlay can handle most of my needs. Bluetooth connectivity is excellent! The thing I don't like is the monitor doesn't adjust viewing angle and there is light reflection and glare that hits the driver, i will try to mess with it more and see if i can overcome that inconvenience. Also I got this head unit installed in my '07 Toyota Tundra and if my wife liked it, I would get it for her in her car but when we tried to use the android auto feature it simply wouldn't work using her Samsung S7. I am hoping a firmware update resolves that issue.

Pros: Apple CarPlay, 2 USB ports & simple OS

Cons: Android auto didn't work, glare from screen in the evening

This headunit is perfect for those of you that just want a simple, intuitive interface without all the extra fluff. This is not the right unit for someone who expects to customize every little thing and have a million options and settings. It has exactly what you need, and nothing more. I put this in my 2017 Civic Hatchback and use Apple CarPlay 100% of the time. I did go ahead and set up my radio presets (there are 3 sets of 6 presets for a total of 18 available stations to save), but have only listened to the radio once. The unit is incredibly responsive and feels high-quality under your finger. Start-up is near instant and back-up camera comes up immediately. There is still the distraction warning that comes up upon start-up, but will go away after a couple seconds on its own if you don't hit accept. I will say for some of the reviews that touched on being slow to respond in CarPlay or Android Auto- that your phone will play a big part in that. I keep my phone well organized, without a million apps I don't use, and dismiss any notifications and the radio is very quick to respond for me. However, when I plugged in my friend's phone that has 25,000 unread emails, 237 missed calls, 39 text messages and one of every app off the App Store, it was pretty sluggish to do what I wanted it to do. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this radio. A few things I would like to see different, is adding back the ability for custom wallpapers and a quick acc

Pros: High-quality, beautiful design, simple and intuitive interface and controls, very responsive and quick start-up

Cons: Basic features, not for the advanced customizer, no custom wallpapers, no quick access dimmer (unless I simply overlooked something)

This head unit is exactly what I was expecting. I wanted a head unit with a capacitive display that was great at running CarPlay and would make it easier to keep this car for several more years. It has done precisely that. Installation was as expected; just set aside a few hours. The quality of the unit is great; it does not make any annoying creaking plastic sounds, and it feels solid and well-built. The screen is not a high pixel-density display like your modern iPhone or Android device, but from 3-4 feet away I have no complaints, especially considering the price. I do not have external amps, components, or a subwoofer in this car, so I was willing to sacrifice some features there in order to have something that looks and feels OEM or better. There are less expensive units out there that provide exceptional value at a lower price. However, for the combination of CarPlay/Android Auto, capacitive display, quality materials, a simple user interface, and a startup time that is short enough that it's ready to go before you leave your driveway, the AX5000 works nicely. For a small bump in price over the AX100, which is also a great head unit, you're getting a nice capacitive screen that's slightly larger, quicker startup time, and available Sirius/XM radio. My star ratings are pretty straight forward. 1 star = "don't waste your time." 3 stars = "It's just okay." 5 stars = "I really like it."

Pros: Metal and glass look and feel very nice. CarPlay works well and adds a lot to a car with a no-frills head unit. Very intuitive and easy to use

Cons: If you want to run external amps you'll be happier with 4-5v preamp outs. Not a high-dpi display, but few head units seem to offer this.

So far the only problem that I have had is with Android Auto stops working but I think that is because I have the Android P beta installed. The stereo has been working great and the sound is way better than the stock stereo that came with the truck. The EQ is really customizable so you can get the sound just right, but it will take a little bit of time. For me, the best thing is having the Android Auto. I really like having a simple interface that just works.

Pros: Android Auto, great sound, simple interface.

Cons: Android Auto crashes but I don't think it is the head unit.

The unit has a very nice appearance, with not cheap plastic like most other units. The unit is all screen with aluminum lip that appears to be solid. Its weird that the black frame on the right is wider than on the left...but you kinda forget about that. I had some weird issues with the install, and will wait to see if it comes back. After installing and being super sure about the wiring, the unit kept exiting from the radio onto the main screen and the audio would stop after a few minutes. I would have to back to tuner, and pick the radio station again. Carplay was only working intermittently. Some buttons were not responding to button pushes. This behavior stopped after day 2 or day 3. Crutchfield sent me a replacement unit that did the same thing, but started to work properly in about 45 mins. Boot time is almost immediate and is awesome. Sound is great, i was able to remove my stock amp altogther and just use the integrated amp on the unit.

I've had this unit for a week now, and I'm very pleased! Great responsiveness, Apple Carplay is amazing! The one thing I am very surprised about is that you can't upload your own wallpaper. It does say on Crutchfield that you can upload your own wallpaper by using a USB thumb drive but that is not the case. You only get to choose 5 generic wallpapers. I was really disappointed but I use Apple Carplay mostly. Hopefully there is a Firmware update that will allow you to choose your own wallpaper.

1 week in and so far it seems to be a good unit. I was a little concerned about it only having 2volt output, but it sounds great. Simple interface (I like plane and simple), has a quick response, android auto works great and so does the bluetooth. Screen looks great also. Best screen I have used That being said, the cost is a little high on it compared to other units. For around the same price you can get some nice headunits with the same features plus more. The screen on this is by far better than my kenwood and jvc.

I've been looking forward to this units release since it was announced in January so maybe my expectations were a bit high but I truly am disappointed. It's interface is more basic and featureless than I would ever expect on a headunit at this price point. It does have a built in crossover and EQ but that's as far as the feature set goes. Seriously, for the money this thing is outclassed by Kenwood and Pioneer units by a long shot when it comes to bang for the buck. Now Sony has never been a major value in that regard but this is not worth the price, maybe a lower price. If absolutely all you need from it is Android auto or carplay then you may be very well satisfied. Personally I expected more. Can anyone tell me why they don't have Mobile phone division design the UI and hardware requirements for these head units? Seriously an Xperia in-dash unit would be amazing...

Pros: Nice capacitive screen, great bluetooth quality and a minimalist design

Cons: Slow responsiveness when moving from one function to another. High quality touch screen is ruined by a pixelated and what looks like a 32 color LCD. Off angle viewing is sub par

This Sony has a nice clean interface. The unit is quick to power up, and quick to switch to my reverse camera. That ridiculous warning message that shows up every time you get in their car automatically goes away after two or three seconds. As quick as it is to start up, I've actually found the responsiveness of the buttons rather slow. This is very pronounced when viewing the list of folders off the second USB interface. The problem is that with a fully-loaded 64GB USB stick full of my music, the responsiveness is really unacceptable. I can count over one second of delay between the page down button and when it responds. This would be a lot more palatable if there was a way for me to search for an artist or song, but there isn't. I can't even select by first letter. It also doesn't order folder names properly, so you have no idea where a folder is going to show up in the list. Also, you can't select between a listing of songs and artists or albums. You just get the folder list, and then you get the list of songs when you click in the folder. Really basic navigation, that doesn't work well. I was disappointed that this did not come with HD Radio. There is hardly any customization you can do on this unit. In summary, it has a clean interface, but really doesn't offer that much else. The better screen is nice but not great enough over the resistive. The extra USB interface is worthless to me since I can't use it to load up and navigate through my

    Pros: Clean-looking interface

Cons: Horrible responsiveness with a large selection of music on USB Folders are not listed in a properly sorted order No artist/album/song selection view off USB media Limited customization (like removing the XM button if you don't have it)
