About the Kicker VSS™ SubStage™ SF150C09

Custom-built bass for your vehicle

Are you disappointed with the level of bass your factory system provides, but don't like the idea of installing a universal subwoofer and wiring kit? The VSS SubStage powered subs by Kicker are made to fit in specific vehicles, so you get harnesses that connect to your factory wiring, and a sub that's made to mount where your particular vehicle has space. Each system comes with vehicle-specific instructions that guide you every step of the way. The package also includes all of the wiring and hardware you need to complete the installation — that means no running to the hardware store to find a part that you didn't know you'd need.

Ready to rumble

The SubStage doesn't skimp on power and performance — it comes equipped with a 10" sub powered by a perfectly matched 200-watt amp, all housed in a custom enclosure that's optimized for sound quality. You'll look forward to rumbling lows that can play back the biggest digital drum beat yet also deliver the low-frequency subtleties of a standup bass. Kicker's earned their reputation for making subs that crank out bass you can feel and the SubStage is no exception.

The SubStage SF150C09 fits the 2009-12 Ford F-150 Super Crew Cab, and the subwoofer installs under the passenger's side of the rear seat. This kit will not install in 2009-10 models with the Sony factory audio system. It connects to the factory stereo via two wire taps for signal, and attaches to the battery for power. Please identify your car before purchasing to make sure it'll work with this package, or you can call one of our Advisors at 1-888-955-6000 to confirm fit.

Needs to have gain control

Crutchfield customer from Lookout Mtn, TN on 7/5/2018

2009 Ford F-150 XLT

It is a great sub for the 2009 F150 Supercrew with factory stereo. I upgraded the door speakers to Polk, but still didn't get much bass. Before purchasing this sub, I read several reviews that consistently stated that this unit needs a way to adjust the output. I would agree. It is a great unit, but definitly can be overly powerful. I spoke with a Crutchfield tech person and a Kicker tech person, and there is nothing to solve this dilema (and they're not planning to offer anything). The Kicker tech recommended adjusting the the bass and fade the sound to the rear speakers (the sub signal comes from the front speaker output). This has helped.

Pros: Great deep bass

Cons: Pricey

The unit is super easy to install (30min) and is completely plug and play for those technically challenged. Limitations to the unit are gain and crossover control. I would like to control the gain remotely without adjusting door bass levels. I would also prefer the unit filter a bit lower as, in my taste, it hits a little high in frequency. As for pure bass, it hits solid and clean. Not an overpowering rattle the windows but thick clean bottom end to fill out the sound in my F150. B

Pros: easy install. solid sound. clean hit.

Cons: no gain control specific to sub. No crossover control

Very pleased with the sound and performance of this subwoofer. Adds just the right amount of bass to the factory stereo in my truck, easy to adjust bass thru factory settings. I also have aftermarket, 2 way Infinity speakers in the doors. Only con, is that it is a bit pricey.

Nice sound, a bit overpriced

The sub sounds nice, even with stock audio. Hit decent enough inside, won't be grabbing anyone's attention while driving by. 4 stars for being a bit pricey for a plastic case, a wire harness, a 10", and a small amp, and also for the instructions which have tiny black and white pictures. I can imagine a lot of people will want to know what wires to tap. That can be found online.

Pros: Sounds nice, fits perfect

Cons: Pricey, black and white instructions really miss a key thing - which wires to tap.

I was skeptical about other reviews saying this sub was worth it. Well it is. The sub hits way harder than the Sony sub. Yes it does work with the Sony system. Not sure why every website, including Kickers website, says that it won't work. I even upgraded the door speakers and tweeters and everything works just fine. Yes, the EQ in the settings does change the way the sub hits.

Pros: Clean sound. Clean hits in low bass.

Cons: Price. But you get what you pay for.

Pretty easy install just under an hour working time after I went to the local auto parts store for the missing wire taps needs for the power harness. Sounds 10x better than compared to the factory sound. Thanks Crutchfield for the recommendation.

Cons: Missing Wire-taps.

Huge upgrade to factory sub

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Used this to upgrade factory subwoofer in a 2014 F150 FX4 with the Sony system and NAV. I've never installed car audio but have a home theater company so I decided to try to tackle this project. Took little less than an hour ,very easy instructions, incredible sound. Bass is nice and tight and unit fits perfect where factory sub was. Only down side is there's no independent control for the amount of bass. I have it on the factory Sony head unit all the way down and can be to much sometimes. But with upgraded JBL components for fronts and JBL coaxial so in the tears my sound definitely changed.

Pros: Easy install, fits perfect under rear seat

Cons: No gain control

I still have my factory radio in my 2009 Ford F150 XLT crew cab and it's sounds amazing. It already had the holes ready to be installed under the passenger backseat, ran the cable just like the instructions said (ONE CABLE) and I had it done in less then an hour. Outstanding design and if you want to make it louder you can add another amp but for me it's louder then I expected anyway.

Pros: Easy install Great/simple instructions Very loud

Cons: Wish you could pick different color. Not really a con

Don't bother guessing, buy it!!! I searched a lot of systems and pulled the trigger on this one. Gust the right amount of bass. It will not rattle windows down the street but it is perfect for rich sound. I changed out the door speakers with Kicker 5x8s and the sound is $$ without having to pay all the $$. Had the speaker installed and even the tech said "wow I did't expect that" once the system turned on. Factory HU. FWIW... You need a sub in a super crew, and this is a great setup.

Pros: Great sound for a 10

Cons: It does cost some $$ but you get what you pay for

Shows up packaged well, fairly easy install(about 1 hour start to finish) connects easily to fuse block under hood, wires to grab signal from under dash are easy to find and connect to(just have to cut some tape off of the wire harness and find the twisted pair) pulled out factory Sony sub and rand wires and hooked up,bolted down and turned on, sounds awesome compared to the Sony they put in my FX4 from the factory.

Pros: Easy install, great sound, tucks right into factory spot under seat

Cons: If your expecting the Bass of a pair of competition 12" subs with a 1000W mono amp this isn't the unit to buy

Very pleased with the sound from this product. It has given me exactly what I was looking for. A solid crisp base that doesn't overpower all the other sound. I actually have the base turned all the way down on my radio settings I was not looking for license plate rattling base just to show everyone else I have big speakers. I appreciate clean sound, not attention getting base. The installation was pretty straight forward by the directions provided. I will say that if you have never installed any car audio equipment of any kind, you might be a little in over your head. Not from the speaker itself, but from the removal of the vehicle components and such that it takes to install. I have a 2013 F-150 Lariat that this was installed in. I also upgraded the four door speakers at the same time with Rockford Fosgate Punch P1683, 3ways. I am very pleased with the overall sound and I am enjoying my new sound.

Pros: Great clean sound and doesn't fill up the whole back floor board.

Cons: None

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I installed this in an 09 F150 Platinum without the Sony Factory Sound, I previously upgraded the door speakers which helped quite a bit however the door speakers just weren't meant to produce bass, after thinking long and hard about purchasing this I finally decided to pull the trigger, other options I looked at took up all the room under the rear seat, the only downfall to this product for me was the price. After receiving this item I found the installation to be very easy, the wiring was basically plug and play and this kit was designed very well. I am very pleased with this product as it produces the clean tight bass that I was looking for and compliments my door speaker upgrade very well.

Pros: Very easy to install, doesn't take up all the room under the back seat, great sound quality

Cons: Price, no bass control knob

Purchased this for my daughter's '12 F150 and had it professionally installed for $79.50. Very neat and clean set up and adds a nice bass to her stock system. Not a huge sound but good enough for Dad though my 17 year old probably wishes it had more thump but she likes it regardless.

Good Sub for Factory Upgrade

kap2424 from Michigan on 7/22/2013

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This sub has lots of bass. It's very clean and tight. I hooked this up to a factory headunit with that did not have an existing sub. Connected sub to rear speaker output. Though this sub puts out lots of bass you can't adjust the crossover. I think Kicker wants you to purchase the DPS that does some of the EQ that the stock head unit can't do. Not having a crossover adjustment makes me give it 4 stars. I've been able to make it still sound good by messing with the stock treble and bass adjustment along with adjusting the EQ on my phone and my iPod but can't make is sound great.

Pros: lots of tight bass out of a little unit

Cons: no crossover adjustment

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I received this kicker subwoofer package about two weeks ago and I was excited. I'm no sound installer guru but I was able to install this kicker subwoofer durning my lunch hour at work. When I say it's a upgrade, it's an upgrade to the factory sub that came with my 2012 f150 fx2. Inside of the truck it sounds good and it hits pretty hard! Now with that said, it's only a 10, so the bass doesn't hit as hard outside of the truck. If your sitting in traffic, the cars to the left, right, front and rear will hear it but that's pretty much it. So, if you want a sub that you can hear down the street, this sub is not your best option. Still, I love it cause it hidden and it sounds good.

Pros: Hidden like factory sub, takes same amount of space as factory sub, hits hard for 10in sub

Cons: Doesn't come in a 12in sub

Cut the floor mat.

Fred from USA on 11/13/2012

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Update on my previous review. I bought two weathertech rear floor mats and cut the floor mat around the Substage subwoofer. Took me five minutes and it's a perfect fit. The subwoofer now has plenty of room to fire that bass. Also anybody can sit in that seat and I won't be worried that they're pushing down on the sub box. I'm very satisfied with my purchase form Crutchfield!

Pros: Hits Hard for a single 10 You don't loose any space under the rear seat. No cutting or drilling for install.

Cons: Get your self another set of floor mats to cut up so the sub woofer doesn't touch the factory floor mats.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I was hesitant to purchase this item at first as I could not find a review on it, or see any installation pictures. But All said and done this thing hits hard. I have a 2011 F150 Limited with the factory Sony navigation and I hated the stereo in it, especially the sub woofer, The louder I turned the volume up the quieter the sub got. I was told the sony nav has an equalizer in it that senses bass levels and controls it. With this Soundgate Substage sub not anymore, the more I turn it up the louder it gets. I could not be happier with my purchase. I have my bass setting at zero and it hits plenty. When I was first looking around at vehicle specific sub woofers the only thing I could find was the JL Audio stealth box. What they don't tell you about it is you have to move your spare tire jack and tools located under the rear seat. And of course you have to run a amp to it, so there goes all your space under the rear seats. The soundgate substage I didn't loose any space. I had my local stereo shop install it for me $125.00. The only issue I have with soundgate substage is it's 6" wider, and about an 1" taller so what happens is the box pushes down on the factory floor mat so much I have to unscrew the box and lift it up just to pull the floor mat out, and I'm worried if someone sits in that seat they'll be pushin the sub woofer down to the floor causing it to slap the woofer. The solution here would be to cut the floor mat around the sub.

Pros: Hits Hard for a single 10 You don't loose any space under the rear seat. No cutting or drilling for install.

Cons: Cheap Plastic Box. Taller than the factory sub woofer box you may need to take out your floor mat in the rear, or don't let anyone sit in that seat.

I believe it does, it only produces low frequencies. I replaced all my factory speakers with infinity and there is no need for high pass crossovers for the door speakers. The sub is so efficient you end up turning down the bass to the 1/2 way mark.

A
Mike, Based on the instructions and the wiring harness that was shipped with the amplified sub, it appears that it can only be used with the speaker level input harness which is the harness I used. I didn't recall seeing any RCA jacks on the sub for preamp outlets to connect to. Good sub though. It was a very clean and easy way to add bass to a stock system. Jason
[ Jason  Feb 07, 2016 ]
A
Just speaker level
[ Rodney  Feb 06, 2016 ]
A
not sure, I connected to speaker level input
[ JAMES  Feb 05, 2016 ]
A
Quick correction: pre-amp outputs are considered low level while speaker level inputs are high. Anyway, I would imagine one could rig this to get input from pre-outs, but that would involve a powered converter to simulate the gain introduced by speaker level signals. This subwoofer is designed to be used with the supplied harness which taps into the factory high level (speakers) outputs feeding the front speakers. I would imagine the Crutchfield techs would be able to answer whether rigging a pre-out to feed a high level input is possible or recommended.
