About the Kicker VSS™ SubStage™ SWRA411
Custom-built bass for your vehicle
Custom-built bass for your vehicle
Are you disappointed with the level of bass your factory system provides, but don't like the idea of installing a universal subwoofer and wiring kit? The VSS SubStage powered subs by Kicker are made to fit in specific vehicles, so you get harnesses that connect to your factory wiring, and a sub that's made to mount where your particular vehicle has space. Each system comes with vehicle-specific instructions that guide you every step of the way. The package also includes all of the wiring and hardware you need to complete the installation — that means no running to the hardware store to find a part that you didn't know you'd need.
Ready to rumble
The SubStage doesn't skimp on power and performance — it comes equipped with a 10" square sub powered by a perfectly matched 200-watt amp, all housed in a custom enclosure that's optimized for sound quality. You'll look forward to rumbling lows that can play back the biggest digital drum beat yet also deliver the low-frequency subtleties of a standup bass. Kicker's earned their reputation for making subs that crank out bass you can feel and the SubStage is no exception.
The SubStage SWRA207 fits the 2011-up Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, and the subwoofer installs on the back of the driver's side rear seat. It connects to the factory stereo via two wire taps for signal, and attaches to the battery for power. I have the Jeep JKU Sahara w/ base audio 430n radio. The included amplifier has no means of adjustment. My Jeep has a hardtop and even at low volume with the windows down you want to jump out. I verified with all types of friends with differing tastes that this sub kit is overpowering. Different music, different settings, and it doesn't matter. Kicker support tried to sell me another amp, then told me to return it and purchase their hide away unit. Not stellar service there. I'd love this sub if it delivered body thumping base but it just beats on your sinuses and ear drums. Yuck. And as the other reviewer said; it turns heads but only because it's all window rattling bass. Kicking your dog in public turns heads too. Not a mark of quality. You can hear the "dsp" chip in the amp trying to adjust to songs but it takes a good 30 seconds before it does. Not good when you like to shuffle different styles of music. Another weird thing is the input is one set of piggy back connectors attached to the LF speaker. Song files don't always transmit the bass signal from this channel. So you can go from songs with ear splitting bass to no bass on the next song. I've ended up using the fader on the radio to adjust the bass level. Which cuts out the left front. The guts of the amp might be good and the sub certainly hits but it can't be dialed in and balanced. Its just not a well designed system. "Tuned to the vehicle", I doubt it. This one is a loser.
Pros: Install is very easy, Easy to pop the sub box in and out
Cons: Phase issues, can't be tuned in, DSP chip can't keep up, uses piggy back connectors instead of an adapter connector, Bass range makes your ears ring, No body feel from the bass

Easy to install, took mabey 45 minutes, 2 sockets and a knife to cut the grommet. I have the Alpine upgrade system with the 8 inch sub. Its pretty good but needed more bass. This substage allows the factory sub to work as well as this monster. If you need to remove the kicker sub it takes mabey 15 seconds with the quick connect and the sub hooks onto the lower anchors for the carseat, very cool design. Both top down and up performance is awesome, hits hard and people look at intersections. Nothing like dual 15s with 4000watts but if you like your hearing this is a good choice. If you turn it up it will make your ears ring easily. Highly recommend.
Pros: Easy install, great performance, and convenient to remove speaker if needed. Instructions are spot on too.
Cons: Makes my ears ring.

The sub actually sounds good until I turn the volume of the new Pioneer head unit past the halfway point. Once I went past that point I blew the sub and now need to replace or upgrade the amp and sub.
Pros: Very good base
Cons: Can't handle the output of top quality head units.
