About the MTX Thunder61
Speakers for the real world
Speakers for the real world
MTX doesn't make speakers that only deliver the goods in a sound lab. This Thunder61 component system features a 6-1/2” durable polypropylene woofer with a rubber surround that'll shrug off the weather and wear that come with living in your car full-time. You can swivel the 1-3/16" silk soft dome tweeter up to 15 degrees in your direction to really dial in the stereo imaging across your dash, and MTX includes hardware to flush- or surface-mounting.
The included crossover network features 2-level tweeter adjustment for fine-tuned sound staging. And while no car speaker can produce bass like a large subwoofer, the Thunder61 woofers truly shine in the lower frequencies. With up to 90 watts RMS of power handling, you can add to their impressive depth and richness when you power them with an outboard amplifier.
Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

MTX Thunder61 reviews
Build quality is nice. The crossover is large and being only passive, I wonder why. As for sound quality, they are capable of much higher power than the stock speakers I replaced. Volume significantly louder and clear.

I don't know man, my outside door handles rattle. Sheet metal was flexing to much, had to negotiate a détente to sound bouncing in the door with "Second Skin" and close cell foam. Stock door wires to thin to handle this much RMS, and now I'm worried that people are judging me for my bad taste in music. Otherwise speakers can solidify love for listening to talk radio or blowing my ear drums with house music. You definitely need quality $200+ head-unit, amplifier with adjustable gain, and lower resistance, other than stock speaker wires. BTW, string instruments can be listened to with detailed clarity, acoustically this speakers work for me.
Pros: My neighbors hate me; they sound great; you'll spend many hours figuring out how to, or pay bunch of money for proper install.
Cons: Door speaker wires need to be replaced to accommodate 90-rms... Good luck with that!

Woofer Cones: The MTX Thunder Series speakers feature durable and rigid polypropylene woofer cones. Polypropylene is also resistant to the moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.
Woofer Mounting: MTX calls the Thunder61 a 6-1/2 component set, and without using the included woofer mounting bracket, it fits into most 6-3/4 and 6-1/2 openings, but the bolt pattern matches a standard 6-3/4 speaker. To fit the standard 3-hole and 4-hole 6-1/2 applications, the included bracket must be used, resulting in the measurements used to sort what vehicles it will fit. If mounted without the bracket the depth is 2.126" and the mounting height is 0.5". In most 6-1/2 applications, when mounted without the bracket, new screw holes must be drilled.
Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters can be flush mounted or surface mounted using the included hardware. Once installed in either housing, the tweeter will pivot approximately 15° in any direction.
|Frame Diameter||Cutout Diameter||Mounting Height||Mounting Depth|
|Surface Mount||2.2"||N/A||1.035"||0.64" (Screw Depth)|
Crossovers: The crossover inputs and outputs are set screw terminals; they accept bare wire up to 10 gauge. There are two positive tweeter outputs, offering flat and -3dB output options. The screw terminals have 2mm Allen heads, and are recessed slightly more than half an inch, so a standard Allen head bit for a screw driver will not fit (an Allen wrench is not included). The crossover point is 4 kHz, the high pass slope is 18 dB/octave and the low pass slope is 6 dB/octave.
