About the MTX Thunder681
Speakers for the real world
Speakers for the real world
MTX doesn't make speakers that only deliver the goods in a sound lab. This Thunder681 component system features a durable 5”x7"/6"x8” polypropylene woofer with a rubber surround that'll shrug off the weather and wear that come with living in your car full-time. You can swivel the 1-3/16" soft dome tweeter up to 15 degrees in your direction to really dial in the stereo imaging across your dash, and MTX includes hardware to flush- or surface-mounting.
The included crossover network features 2-level tweeter adjustment for fine-tuned sound staging. And, while no car speaker can produce bass like a large subwoofer, the Thunder681 woofers truly shine in the lower frequencies. With up to 90 watts RMS of power handling, you can add to their impressive depth and richness when you power them with an outboard amplifier.
Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.
Grilles are not included; the factory grilles should be suitable for most applications.

I've had these in my '03 Mustang convertible for a few years ago, just in the front. I have a Rockford Fosgate P4004 50wx4 amp powering them. They sound darn good. I just got a new (refurbished) Kenwood deck at a smokin' price here, and these MTX's sound even better now. I previously had the old JVC Bongiovi deck that Crutchfield cleared out several years ago. I had that with a Clarion 7-band old-school EQ. With that weird setup, these MTX's were a little brash in the mid-range/treble department. I had my 2.2khz dial turned all the way down most the time. They sounded darn good overall, but like I say, they were a little bright, which I realize is also a function of my amp gain setting and fader setting, etc. That EQ has what, a line driver in it basically too so again, I once described the sound as potentially "blistering" to my install guys. But yeah, now with the Kenwood DPX792, they sound more normal, more crisp, and not so overdriven. It looks like 6x8's with separate tweeters (components) aren't super common, so I'm glad to have these. My Mustang had the "Mach" system so the tweeters are up on the corner of the door/window; it's a cool setup. It'd be a shame to just stick 2- or 3-way 6x8's down below in the door spot and not do the separate tweeter up top. Gotta go with components.
Pros: Sound terrific, separate components in 6x8" which you won't find everywhere, great value, takes a slammin' but keeps on jammin'
Cons: None come to mind, and not just because it's hard to think when I'm crankin' my jams to high heaven

Woofer Cones: The MTX Thunder Series speakers feature durable and rigid polypropylene woofer cones. Polypropylene is also resistant to the moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.
Mounting Applications: MTX describes this speaker as a 6x8/5x7; it fits examples of both applications, but the hole spacing is not a perfect match for Ford 6x8 applications. Drilling new screw holes or inserting the screws at a sharp angle may be necessary. Please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit.
Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters can be flush mounted or surface mounted using the included hardware. Once installed in either housing, the tweeter will pivot approximately 15° in any direction.
|Frame Diameter||Cutout Diameter||Mounting Height||Mounting Depth|
|Surface Mount||2.2"||N/A||1.035"||0.64" (Screw Depth)|
Crossovers: The crossover inputs and outputs are set screw terminals; they accept bare wire up to 10 gauge. There are two positive tweeter outputs, offering flat and -3dB output options. The screw terminals have 2mm Allen heads, and are recessed slightly more than half an inch, so a standard Allen head bit for a screw driver will not fit (an Allen wrench is not included). The crossover point is 4 kHz, the high pass slope is 18 dB/octave and the low pass slope is 6 dB/octave.
- Width: 4-15/16"
- Height: 1-3/8"
- Depth: 3-1/8"
