Very good value for all the options and it's an Alpine.
Pros: Great device, great value, installation was easy and fun. It really lit up the sound in the car, the bonus being all the hands free options, (this is a high school student's vehicle).
Cons: Bluetooth is a little sensitive and will take a while to sync with a device causing playback delays..

It's great to have an Alpine, again. 4 volt preamp outputs make a huge difference from 2 volt. This unit has everything I need with ease of use.
Pros: 4 volt preouts! 4 channel + 2 sub sprouts. Good looking unit. Has a CD player! (Going the way of the 8 Track?) Aux input. (Still use a MP3 player.) Bluetooth. Sounds great.
Cons: Mine didn't come with a case or pouch for storing detachable face in. Guess I'll use an old Royal Crown bag.

I bought one of these for my Volvo XC70 and it is really a great head unit especially for the price. When my neighbors OEM unit went out in their Avalon, I recommended one of these and installed it for them. They are also very happy with it as well. Great sound, retains CD playback, USB inputs from my iphone and bluetooth pairing is flawless and easy. Very pleased. Super happy with the install items that come from Crutchfield as well. This makes install a breeze even on the Avalon which requires that you retain the OEM head unit in the trunk. This install initially appeared complicated with so many wires, but it was not. The wire connections are all explained on the Crutchfield website that they send when you purchase, so nothing is left unexplained.
Pros: Great sound quality and plenty of inputs for your smartphone. Easy to intuitively operate and integrate with your phone.
Cons: didn't find any

No qualms with Crutchfield, the order, shipment and delivery was as expected. The ReadyHarness service is worth the money! I would suggest that they stick a note inside the box about removing the protection collar that is found way over on page 43 of the owners manual. I installed the unit and thought that collar seemed strange but it fit and that is that. I'm not doing it over and I shame myself for not reading to the end of the manual. Get a trim removal tool from somewhere and take your time removing the hard, plastic parts. You won't find replacements at a parts store. The unit sounds good and replaces a factory unit that started having issues after 10 years and would have cost over 2 grand to replace. And now I have Bluetooth built in!
Pros: ReadyHarness Service
Cons: A "heads-up" about the protection collar would have yielded 5 stars.

Loved the service I got for purchasing this product however Im not 100 impressed with it. Have issues with the clock display, the voice options the connection with blue tooth. In addition, the manual for troubleshooting is less than desirable. The positive is that it has a cd player and radio and is better than what I had before, which was nothing. Would not recommend to others.

Overall great unit! Decent sound, sound options, great immediate and responsive Bluetooth connectivity (using a Samsung Galaxy S8+). Overall quite pleased! The feel is not bad, decent menu layout, easy to navigate without studying the manual. Easy install, and quite a step up from my classic 1997 RadioShack "Optimus" branded CD head unit. Great versatility should I later want to add subs, other amps, etc. I also must say the Bluetooth pickup for hands-free calls works far better than others I've ever tried. The provided microphone itself is the same as others I've encountered, so I suspect there is better noise canceling and soft filtering processes active on this Alpine. A pleasant surprise! Of any the small things that could use improvement in a perfect world, honestly, I'm 99% sure that 99% of all head units are the same way, so I doubt any of that matters with regards to making a selection. Some of these small wishes include, an ability to skip input sources from rotation not currently connected (such as Aux in or Sirius input), and, HD FM tuner. Seems very few single-DIN models have HD anymore. On that note - good radio sensitivity. Also better than the 1997 RadioShack that it replaced. :)
Pros: Easy to use, all around quality performance, reliable Bluetooth pairing (with Samsung Galaxy S8 plus)!
Cons: No HD FM radio tuner. Though admittedly, this seems to be the case with almost all single-DIN models at this time.

Installed this radio in a 2005 Toyota Highlander with a JBL amplified system and it sounds great. I had searched the internet on installation because of the amplified system and many talked about the difficulty of installation. I saw that the Crutchfield website was asking if my car had the JBL amplifier and they showed me what I needed. When the order was complete, I got an email giving me instructions on how to install. When the radio and harness came I started to put everything together. Was unsure if I had it right so I called customer service. You would of thought the guy was in the room with me. He walked me through step by step and answered my questions. I installed the radio and it sounds awesome. Even was able to get the steering wheel controls to work. Great Value with good features and sound!
Crutchfield customer from Wake Forest, NC on 11/19/2020
2005 Honda Element
I've had this for about two weeks now, and have to say it is a great performer for the price. Blue tooth connection is painless to an iPhone, and as a bonus, there is a button on the front "voice" that enables SIRI. The mic is pretty good and all the phone features work well. The CD player is good and no issues over a rough road. pretty easy to select tracks, advance, shuffle, replay etc.. The display and keys colors are selectable in a LOT of choices. Has three band tone controls, that are easy to get to. I've not used the internal amp, so can't comment on that. It has full sets of preamp out RCA connections (Frnt, Rear, Sub) that I'm using to an external amp. The tuner picks up stations I did not know were there, and the Element is known to have a lame antenna. There are a few nit's I'll point out. The display can be hard to read if you use your headlights in the daytime. It dims a like it should when you turn on the lights, so I may have to make that switchable (customize) for me so I can dim at night and have full bright in daytime while running my headlights. If you have polarized Sun glasses on - forget reading the display at all. Second issue - the input selector only cycles one way and there are a lot of inputs. So going form CD to the Tuner, takes a bunch of clicks. It does not remember you were listing to the radio when you stop the CD, so you have to click through to get back to it. Last the clock doesn't display all the time, and it is my only clock.
Pros: -Great sound and function for the money -Easy to use -Good Eq functions -works well with iPhone (supports two phones) -Full set of pre-out for amps
Cons: - Input selector - Display hard to read with sunglasses -Clock is not on display all the time

Replaced a Soundstream deck with this Alpine. WOW! What a difference. My speakers came alive right away. I didn't know what I was missing. Excellent sound and tons of customization, from sound to colors. Thanks Alpine and Crutchfield for offering such a high performing deck at such an affordable price.
Pros: Very easy to navigate. Lots of customization options. Superior sound quality. Lots of bass. Affordable.
Cons: None.

1996 Ford Ranger
I chose this deck based on its versatility: CD, Bluetooth, Pandora and SiriusXM ready, USB input, and an aux input as well. All bases covered. It replaced the stock radio in my work pickup (1996 Ford Ranger XLT). I suspected that I'd have to replace the stock speakers in the truck as well, but this deck really made those 24 year-old cones come to life! Alpine has a well-established history of producing great audio equipment, and this deck carries on that fine tradition. Highly recommended.
Pros: Good instructions, great sound. The ability to change display/button colors is a neat little feature. Paired easily with my Android phone.
Cons: None.

I have been buying Alpine products since I was in high school. That was back in 1986 when I purchased my first tape deck and receiver. I have always had superb longevity and great performance out of all my Alpine products. This receiver and CD player are no exception! The FM reception is very good! I have channels that I didn't know existed. I wanted something basic and simple because I still have so many CD's and I am not ready to give those up. The price was very reasonable as well. Thanks again for producing something great!

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Installed in a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Had to cut the plastic behind the radio to make enough space for the RCA's and wiring harness. It's a simple head unit and does what it's expected to. Considering it's a few extra dollars compared to some of it's other competitors I'm a little disappointed. The voltage on the amp pre-outs must be low because I have the gains on my amps turned up pretty high, which isn't a big deal - that's what that setting on the amps is for. I've had this head unit installed for a little over 2 weeks now and upon rare occasion the Bluetooth will cause me trouble. The connection will skip and requires me to restart the head unit. The built in EQ is pretty standard and helped flatten out some of the harshness from my new component speakers.
Pros:
Cons: The Bluetooth connection seems to be spotty at times.

The Alpine Radio is awesome (no surprise) and all the little things Crutchfield provides to help with the install made it a breeze. So glad I order the pre-wiring kit and the dash removal tools. I had the dash removed, the old radio removed, this new beauty installed, and the dash replaced (with no cracks) in under 15 minutes. Thank you, Crutchfield!
Pros: Too easy to do the install!

Awesome head unit. From the basic visual aesthetic of being able to change colors of keys, as well as colors of the lettering, to the functionality and customization of output... this Alpine head unit has it all! I changed out all the speakers in my truck, but had an older double din HU in my truck that didnt perform well and output was awful. I replaced it with this HU and man the difference was night and day. Sound outout is so crisp!! Bluetooth connectivity and clarity of calls is really outstanding. And the ability to control pandora through the head unit itself is an added bonus. Would definitely buy it again!!

I can't stand this deck. It doesn't work well with pandora. It takes forwvwr for it to rediscover a Bluetooth connection with your phone. It doesn't always recognize your phone througbisb connection. The hands free doesn't always work well. It takes minutes to get Siri to understand what text message you want to send to a contact. This is one of the worst purchases I have ever made. Wish Crutchfield would take it back and let me use the credit to something that actually works. By purchasing this deck, you might as well just buy a deck WITHOUT any smart capabilities. Terrible receiver.
Pros: Looks nice. Sounds good.
Cons: All connectivity with your phone is terrible. You will get to your destination before the deck realizes your phone is a good connection.

Amazing piece of kit. Leaps and bounds better then their top tier Axxera offerings which I had before. Everything just works. Dials feels amazing. Display is crystal clear and the menu navigations are straight forward after setting everything up. I'm using this amp with a couple external amplifiers and everything is perfect, sound quality and fidelity is something only an Alpine can give you. Great place to start for a budget SQ system. I bought the scratch and sent options and everything was still in its original bags, nothing missing, nothing damaged and came with all accessories.

Great head unit especially if you're adding aftermarket amplifiers, subs. I measured a clean, non distorted signal to volume level 34 out of 35 using the SMD DD1. The only thing I disliked about it is there is no way to unpair/delete a Bluetoothed phone like other models, you have to remove the battery cable and it will reset everything.
Pros: Very clean signal, dedicated sub out with level control, other controls for your listening experience
Cons: Cannot unpair a phone once it is paired via bluetooth and the only way to do so is disconnecting the battery

New tech in a vintage Land Cruiser
Crutchfield customer from Tega Cay, SC on 8/29/2020
As a teenager in the 1980's, I always enjoyed the Crutchfield catalogues, dreaming what I'd buy if I only had the money. As I prepare to turn 50, I thought it was high time to browse their website to purchase a new single din unit to replace the vintage 20 year old Alpine unit, with the worn smooth buttons, mounted in the Tuffy center console of my 1977 Land Cruiser FJ40. I was shocked at just how affordable this unit was, especially considering the modern features it includes (Bluetooth, hands-free phone, Pandora, USB connection/charge). This Alpine unit and the vintage one remarkably shared the same plug, making the install much easier than I'd hoped. Removing the vintage unit without benefit of the keys was by far the worst part. As I only run one set of speakers, I did have to swap things around and use the front speaker output to be able to hear callers on my phone. I'm no audiophile and have the hearing of a man in his 50's (and likely worse) but the sound sure seems a good improvement over the old unit. At this point, I've had it installed for a week and despite limited time behind the wheel due to COVID, I've managed to figure out the most important controls. My only wish is that it played nicely with Spotify like it does with Pandora. All in all, I'd buy it again, I recommend it for others, and believe it will be a good value if it lasts even half as long as my last Alpine car stereo.
Pros: Good value

Great Replacement for OEM
Danny from Dousman, WI on 7/30/2020
1998 Chevrolet Suburban
Sound quality and ease of use are the reason I chose this unit. I put the CD-143 BT in my son's truck a few years ago (with a TON of free install gear) and I was sold. I've been using JVC on several installs and although the sound shaping parameters are wider on those units I've found I really don't need them with the Alpine 172 with the proper speaker choices. This install was on my 1998 Suburban tow rig and it turned out sweet. I ended up using Rockford Fosgate 165x3 6.5's in the doors front and rear, even tho Crutchfield doesn't list them as a fit in the rear. Depth is tight and had to angle the mounting screws a bit, but it's all good. The rear headliner mounted 4x10's ended up with Kicker KSC4100's and Crutchfield did not list them either, but they went in with no issue other than cutting the harness and using the Kicker supplied speaker leads. I also ended up leaving the tweeters that are mounted on top of the front door armrests and they sound fine. The only issue that was any problem was a missing harness adapter. The Suburban ended up having 3 options anyway and Crutchfield gave me a credit for the one I purchased at the local parts store. In the end I couldn't be happier to get rid of the old rotted speakers and head unit with burnt out lighting and have a great sounding system. Not killer loud, not booming bass, just great natural sound. Thanks Crutchfield!
Pros: Easy to use controls. GREAT SOUND!
Cons: Less audio adjustments (not needed if speakers are correct)

Excellent upgrade over the old factory installed radio. Installation was done by my mechanic and he said it was straightforward and the provided instructions from Crutchfield are always helpful. I'm still getting used to all it's features and settings, but it's pretty simple to operate and setup Bluetooth and program the tuner stations and choose the display color. The really impressive thing though is how much better this sounds compared to the old factory radio. Granted it's a 2004 car, but still, wow! The clarity of the vocals and instruments are impressive and the bass is nice and deep. Add the bass boost options built in and it's really awesome. The removable face plate is a nice security feature as well. I'm highly satisfied with this tuner and would fully recommend it to others.
Pros: Outstanding sound quality. Great Bluetooth calls. Brings my music back to life in my car again.
Cons: Nothing I've come across as of yet.

With the CD player, Bluetooth connection, USB Port and sirius and pandora options You really have everything covered.the audio puts out a nice level of clear sound Through my modest Front speakers. I'm very happy with my choice. The installation is simple and straightforward I used all the original existing brackets . With the free harness kit that coincidently matches the existing wiring It makes everything that much easier.
Pros: It's a good quality radio at a good price
Cons: Don't know if it has a clock display got to figure that out

Very satisfied with this stereo! Puts out GREAT quality sound, very easy to install, super simple to use. I highly recommend this product for anyone looking to get a simple upgrade to their stock stereo. I put this in a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 with a Bose system. Producing great sound with the stock speakers. Easily and quickly connects to my phone via Bluetooth every time I get into the truck. Crisp clear phone calls and connections. I'm extremely satisfied.

I decided to buy this radio based on the good reviews here. I am NOT disappointed. What great sound. I had planned to replace the stock speakers in my 2003 Ford Ranger but not now. I had no clue that the stock speakers could sound so good. All it takes is a good radio. The installation instructions were a bit misleading but I finally got them figured out. This is my first Alpine product and I am thrilled with the sound, functionality and quality. I do agree with other reviewers that the buttons are too small. It is easy to fat finger a function.
Pros: Sound quality Functionally Price point
Cons: Button are a bit too small Misleading instructions for installation

MEDFORD
ritchie from MEDFORD on 6/25/2020
2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser
The GOOD: Great Sound even with my stock speakers. I love the bass program button that gives you just the right amount of bass kick and highs. Lots of operating modes, tuner, CD, Bluetooth, Pandora, and Sirius XM. The BAD: Takes it a while to recognize and connect to my Android phone. Sometimes necessitating having to open my connections menu and re-selecting all the interfaces. When restarting the car and starting Pandora, the audio is extremely skippy for about a minute and then it settles down and plays normally. The UGLY: The front panel release button is RIGHT NEXT to the phone button, so when I'm driving and want to answer the phone it's very easy to miss the phone button and you end up ejecting your front panel onto the floor. Then I have to illegally pick up the phone to answer it.
Pros: Great Sound, many features Adjustable display color
Cons: Slow connection to phone Skippy Bluetooth Poor eject button placement

Alpine Always Delivers
Crutchfield customer from King George, VA on 6/24/2020
1999 Toyota Tacoma
I bought an older truck and wanted to have a head unit that gave me Bluetooth functionality and the Alpine delivered. The quality and expectation I had from Alpine has not changed over the last 20 years and for the price, it's a home run. The microphone cord is long enough to mount it anywhere in your vehicle. Fantastic options for the display(s) and great tuning options for standard stereo set ups.
Pros: Great Bluetooth usability for phone calls and for all audio coming from the phone. USB and Aux inputs for great audio connection and charging.
Cons: Navigation through some of the options is a little cumbersome.

Great Headunit
Crutchfield customer from Renton, WA on 6/18/2020
1991 Toyota Pickup
I got the Alpine CDE-172BT as a replacement for the very old Sony headunit in my 91 Toyota pickup. I was looking for something that had BT connectivity, that also played CD's and the added bonus of it playing nicely with Pandora which is my main music streaming source made this a homerun. Install was simple and straightforward, the headunit is relatively easy to use, although not completely intuitive but nothing a quick search in the user manual didn't fix. What I didn't realize is that it would readout the song titles on CD's and since my immaturity is that of a 12 year old, I had to play a song called sex to take a picture.
Pros: Bluetooth, plays cd's, easy install, plays well with android.
Cons: none for me

Big bang for your budget bucks
Crutchfield customer from Okeechobee, FL on 6/2/2020
This is coming from "for the money" as this would be considered a budget head unit. I went from 2 Din to single Din. And this unit almost slipped itself in to the adapter. Read the owners manual, it tells you step by step in very simple detail all the functions and settings and how to get there. Now? I jump in, turn thr key and within seconds Bluetooth is already paired with my phone. It has a bass boost built in but I find it dulls out the brilliant highs this unit can produce. My main reasons for buying? 1) It's an Alpine, period. 2) 4 volt signal to the amplifier. 3) Loads of ways to customize the sound to your ears. I ran the unit for one week by itself and I was impressed with the volume and sound quality. When I added a amplifier, it took on a life of its own and has been pleasing me since.
Pros: Exceptional value, easy to setup and use
Cons: None

The Bass feature definitely puts some depth to the tunes and with no problems. Overall for a nice well rounded entry market stereo I'd say it's worth the price for what you get. If you don't need fancy shmancy, this stereo definitely gets the job done. If you are an audiophile and require quality, looks to alpines top model offerings! I had a CDA-9884 from 2011 that I bought from crutchfield and installed myself. It was still going as strong as the day I bought it, just very outdated lacking BT built-in, usb or aux jack.
Pros: Easy to use Decent power Simple straightforward design
Cons: Requires Microphone plugged into jack in back of unit for BT phone calls No fold down face
