About the Alpine ILX-W650

A powerful combo

There are a lot of solid receivers out there that give you Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in Bluetooth®, and SiriusXM connectivity. Very, very few, however, boast the shallow chassis of Alpine's iLX-W650 (only 2-13/16" deep), making it a great candidate for a smooth installation in many "problem vehicles." And none are designed to fit perfectly with Alpine's KTA-450 power pack amplifier, a compact amp that packs an impressive 50 watts RMS by 4 channels. When secured together using Alpine's Power Stack installation gear, the iLX-W650 and amp are still less than 5" deep. If space is a commodity and you're thinking about building a system with more power, Alpine has the solution.

Built for the best smartphone experience

Your iPhone® or Android™ phone is your hub for music, maps, and communication, and Alpine brings that familiar experience to your dash with built-in Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™. Access the apps you need without getting distracted, and the 7" capacitive touchscreen works just like a tablet, so you'll feel right at home. And Alpine has enhanced the touchscreen experience with swipe control over volume, track-skipping, and more.

Streamlined control for driving

CarPlay and Android Auto make important functions easy to control with large, familiar app icons that you can find immediately when you need them. Other info appears on the screen in big, easy-to-read text on a clean, clutter-free background. You can also activate apps with voice commands, using the external microphone that's included with the receiver. You can make calls, compose texts, select tunes, and start navigation without taking your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road.

Lots of entertainment

With a wired connection to your smartphone via the receiver's rear USB, you can browse through your phone's high-res FLAC music files for playlists, songs, artists, and albums. And the iLX-W650 is SiriusXM-ready, so you can add a satellite radio tuner and enjoy your favorite music, sports, entertainment, and more anywhere you go.

Audio goodies

Use the 9-band parametric equalizer and 6-channel time-correction tools to maximize the audio signal sent to the powerful built-in amplifier. Three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs deliver an ultra-clean signal for adding additional amps for more power.

Get where you're going

If you need directions, launch your maps app using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to find out how to reach the coolest new spot in town. Just touch the convenient "voice" button on the receiver and ask. Your phone will handle the turn-by-turn directions, and the big capacitive touchscreen allows you to pinch-to-zoom the map display. You'll be able to pinpoint exactly where you need to be and, if need be, find a place to park.

Front- and rear-view, too

With two camera inputs, you can also install front- and rear-view cameras and use the receiver's built-in parking guides to back up safely in any crowded lot.

Some states and localities prohibit or restrict the use of video and information displays in vehicles – it is your responsibility to see if any restrictions or prohibitions apply in your area.

I currently own three Apple CarPlay decks. A Pioneer 4200 NEX, a recent Kenwood, and now the Alpine. It is by far and way better than either of my other decks. The screen is bright enough that I can see it in direct sunlight with sunglasses on in my Miata with the top down. The auto dim feature is excellent. The mic included sees to work well and have had no complaints while talking on the phone. This deck is a tremendous value.

Pros: Screen Brightness, Auto Dim, Bluetooth phone sound quality, value

Wow! I feel like my 14 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee just rolled off the show room floor. This is an excellent unit, shallow depth makes for an easy install, and it is extremely intuitive. On top of that it sounds great. And Apple car play is fantastic! The only peculiarity is the odd blue tooth pairing procedure which involves setting the parking brake, releasing it, and then setting it again.

Pros: Shallow depth, intuitive design, superior sound quality.

Great unit, easy to install, and overall simple intuitive interface. My only complaint is that Android auto often looses service at a much higher rate than I previously experienced with my last head unit.

Pros: Good looks good sound easy install.

Cons: I experienced loss of Android Auto in certain areas however I also live in the country and Android auto may require more data than I'm used to.

Radio does not work with Pixel 3a

Was initially going to be a five star, as the radio has been fantastic with my iPhone 6s. However, i recently purchased a Google Pixel 3a and problems arose. When hooked up via USB, the radio reports "device not supported". WHen connected via BlueTooth, the radio just locks up then enters an endless reboot cycle. Updating to most current software did not correct the issues. At this point, the iLX-W650 is just an expensive tuner.

Pros: Looks great, sounded great, worked great with old iPhone 6s.

Cons: Does not do anything with Google Pixel 3a

This is a great radio, and when you consider the price, it's really very impressive. It installed in my 2014 Jeep Wrangler easily. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out where I wanted to mount my mic and my USB port. I purchased this along with the 6 foot USB extension you can buy from Crutchfield. I drilled a hole that allowed me to flush mount it in the center console and it all looks factory. When researching radios, I saw a review on another site where someone complained this lacked features. They then went on to describe that the "features" they were missing were neon lights changing all the time and flashing like a 2000's era rave. He is correct, but it's not a downside, it's awesome. This radio had a very factory look and feel when installed, which is exactly what I want now that I am not a 14 year old boy. It looks great, and everything besides the screen (which is bright and responsive) fades in the background, as it should. Sound quality is a great improvement over the factory radio. I no longer need to crank it up like I did with the factory head unit. Bluetooth connects quickly. Steering wheel controls work great still as well. I am using this primarily within the CarPlay mode, & it is very nice. Being able to set the steering wheel controls to do extra things with long presses work well to activate Siri, play/pause, & answer/end calls without taking your hand off the wheel. I am very happy with the purchase and would defi

Shallow depth means this is the only unit I could fit in my space. Sound is quite good. My biggest complaint is with only one USB port you cannot play music off a USB stick and use Andriod Auto (or Carplay) at the same time, only one or the other. A USB hub is not recognized. Also, it supports FLAC music files, but not high resolution files, limited to 44.1/16.

I've known Alpine to be a quality car-audio brand, and seeing this shallow mount unit at this price point, as well as possibility of adding a low-profile amp easily made me choose this unit. After a month of use, it's mostly a good unit with two glaring issues, both with android auto integration. Firstly, when music is played through android auto (iheart/spotify/pandora), the sound quality is significantly worse than what's heard through bluetooth audio. While the unit says the EQ is working, the Media Xpander options don't work, leading me to believe those sound augmenting features don't work with Android Auto. Also, the unit will not play bluetooth audio while using android auto. This is annoying, given the sound quality issue, although this may not be easy to resolve, as Android auto may not allow BT audio simultaneously. Secondly, the android auto app crashes constantly. When you first plug it in after getting into car, the Android Auto app will crash in about 5-10 minutes, requiring you to unplug phone, and then plug it back it, after which the App will usually not crash until the next time you power cycle the head unit. Other than that, the interface is minimalist/no-frills which is fine. The sound quality is very good via bluetooth (I also have add-on amp ktp-445a). Installation was pretty easy (on par with other double din installs). Mic quality via bluetooth or android auto seems fine. I hope Alpine will address the Android Auto c

Pros: Minimalist, easy to use Good sound quality with bluetooth

Revised review from last review down below. Turns out to get the best sound from your iphone or iPod plugged in through USB you need to turn CarPlay off and use phone like a iPod. Did that and made a big improvement in sound. Sucks though cause CarPlay is nice to use but I prefer better sounding music through my cars system. But still able to control everything through steering wheel and still able to make and receive calls.

After being familiar with the caliber and reputation of Alpine for many years, I am highly disappointed in this unit to the point that I pray I recurved a defective unit. As an installation, I have an amp for highs and an amp for the sub that was previously driven by a Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX. I decided to replace this radio to get something more up to date and as I use Waze more than anything, GPS was no longer required for the radio. On the Alpine, the CarPlay was very glitchy. It was able to be smooth and responsive to my touch, but many of the apps didn't seem stable when running. At times the unit would just reboot while I was driving. The last straw happened when I was taking a business call and it rebooted. Right after my install, which was very straight forward, I did a firmware update to the latest version (I think it was 1.01 at the time). The audio quality was also very poor to the point that even maxing out both my sub level and EQ setting for the sub, it still was like the sub was non existent. I checked the RCAs with a o-scope and signal was being passed through, but did seem lower. The highs were bright and the mids weren't anything to write home about. Also, compared to the Pioneer Bluetooth calling, people on the other end complained about a lot of noise from my mic on the Alpine. Needless to say, I returned this unit and went back to a Pioneer AVIC-W4400NEX, and peace has returned to my life.

Pros: Installation depth is incredible and makes it very easy to get wires in the dash.

    Cons: Literally everything else.

So I installed this on my 2015 Jeep JK (2 Door). I'll start with the bad. 1. The radio lacks lows and bass compared to the factory radio and speakers. Not that the Factory radio had much, but I lost what I had. 2. This is a short nose radio. And the Jeep has a curvey dash. Because of that, the included dash will not push out the radio far enough to cover the bottom causing a small ugly lip. I had to push out the kit by installing washer between the dash and dash kit. The good: 1. Lots of features. EQ, x-overs, easily add a backup cam, and apple car play. 2. Highs and mids sound great. 3. Easy to use. Hope that helps.

Pros: Lots of features. Highs and mids sound great. Easy to use.

Cons: The radio lacks lows and bass. Small ugly lip without mods.

Giving three stars due to Apple CarPlay music streaming quality. The unit I have has the latest firmware and Bluetooth and radio all sound really good BUT for some reason USB CarPlay sounds not really good, sounds flat and doesn't produse the bass and treble I know my system can do. I will say Bluetooth does indeed sound better then my less then a year old alpine but this unit doesn't compare to the older unit USB streaming which really sucks. Most everybody knows streaming through USB and AUX should be the first choice for sound quality before Bluetooth. It's a disappointment that CarPlay sound is so bad. I was looking forward for CarPlay but the sound quality just bums me out. One last thing is that in the setting you can't turn on MX setting when your phone is connected to usb/CarPlay all other sources you can, I think that would help CarPlay a lot of Alpine would fix that in a future firmware update.

This unit is no slouch. I've installed the best through the years and for the amount of money, you can't beat this Alpine. What it lacks in (custonized backrounds, high power internal amp, i.r.remote, navigation, etc.)it makes up for in fuctionality and ease of operation. Horray for Alpine making this very affordable unit. Very clear video screen for backup cam. Full touchscreen a big plus. Fully functioal pre out control. Able to upgrade internal amp with "power pack". The Digital Media Player market has been a game changer, and now with a reduced price. Everbody is getting one. Nobody uses CD's anymore. I'm in! My next vehicle is getting one of these.

Pros: All the room behind the unit.

    Cons: None.

I bought this unit for the Carplay and Android Auto features. This is a nice economical way to have both technologies. So, being a cost effective solution there are some limitations with this unit. These limitations are: 1. Bluetooth sound is ok, Carplay and Android Auto sound is far superior. (I think Alpine is working on this, the new firmware mentions sound quality issues with bluetooth.) 2. You have to connect a wire in the harness to your parking brake signal. You cannot change settings without being stopped and having the parking brake activated. This sucks!!!! You cannot pair a bluetooth device to this unit unless the car is parked and parking brake is applied. if you have a passenger in your car with a killer playlist they want to play, you have to pull over, park the car and pair their device. And oh by the way, you can only pair up to 4 devices total on this unit. 3. The screen is nice and large. When you are just playing the radio, you only get the radio station numbers displayed. There is no radio station info or song information displayed, just numbers. My old OEM radio at least displayed the song being played and station info. Nothing on this unit. 4. Make sure you keep an eye on the firmware updates from Alpine on this unit. The unit right out of the box is buggy, lots of system crashes during carplay and android auto modes. The new firmware cleans a lot of these issues.

Pros: Carplay and Android Auto at this price point. Alpine sound is outstanding.

Cons: There is no volume knob. There are volume buttons. I knew this when I bought the unit, it just takes a little time to get use to changing volume differently. The limitations of the unit makes this a three star unit. My expectations for aftermarket units should exceed what I had in my old OEM radio.

I recently purchased the Alpine iLX W650 for my Toyota Avalon 2006 limited with JBL sound system. I'm very happy with the product so far and the stereo quality is very impressive. Startup is quick, approximately 10 seconds. For the rewiring I had to bypass one wire for the am radio since the interface wasn't amplifying it. Aside from that the product works without a hitch. I would highly recommend this product.

Could not be happier about this stereo. Was looking for an Apple CarPlay unit to upgrade my 2010 JKU with Infinity system. The wiring was so easy with the Crutchfield pre-wired adapter kit. The sound blows away the factory unit. I did have to use the rear fader setting to lower the overall master volume. It's just too loud at the lowest volume settings when the balance is at the default zero. This was an easy fix. I also added a rear camera while I did this install. The technical support team is so awesome. I had a minor question about wiring the camera because I have a manual transmission. They walked me through it in a few minutes. The response time for the camera going on in reverse is impressive. It's a faster response time than in my Grand Cherokee's factory camera. I initially had some delays in Apple CarPlay connecting with my phone. I troubleshooted and tried an Apple-issued lightning cable. I think this must have been the issue. It's connects within 5-15 seconds now every time.

Pros: Display is vivid and simple. I really like That there are no protruding buttons/knobs. It looks like a factory install. The sound is incredible.

Overall fantastic unit if your are looking for shallow depth and great expandability. Alpine hit it out of the park with this unit giving you everything you need and nothing of what you don't for a great price point. The size of the unit makes it very easy to install in alternate locations like the JDM Nav pod in the mid 2000 Subaru's. The interface is easy and straight forward and android auto/apple car play integration make navigation and voice control a cinch.

Pros: Super slim enclosure available amp backpack front and rear camera input

Cons: Parking brake connections locks out 90% of the units functions.

I would not recommend this unit, it was very buggy and glitchy I even updated the software and siri still would glitch and sometime turn off right away and cause you to reactivate siri which got annoying. Switching between apps was glitchy. Returned this for the pioneer DMH 1500 nex and couldn't be happier.

They just telling me that's normal which I know it's not since my other car has carplay and all the buttons work. After I did my own research and found out Alpine has a firmware update for the ILX-W650 that addresses this concern. I performed the update and everything works as it should. Great product!! Great upgrade from the stock radio in my 2016 Jeep Rubicon. I was looking for something basic with CarPlay and big sound and this is it. Matches up perfectly with my Alpine speakers and I was blown away at how clear and powerful it is. Wrangler owners beware that the center console USB port that plugs into the UConnect box does not support CarPlay, so I just ran a new USB extension down under the dash and to the console. Otherwise installation was fairly smooth. CarPlay works fantastic and can't imagine driving without it.

I have't had the stereo long, but so far I like it. It looks clean and has a very simple design to access everything you need to program or adjust. I had an issue with the parking brake signal not being recognized so I could not set up Bluetooth or access several other options on the unit. I thought possibly the interface was defective, but after a call to Crutchfield, one tech said that on Toyota's you at times need to run a wire from the head and splice it into the wire for the parking brake to get it to work.

Installation was effortless, due to the small form factor no cutting was required to fit the double din. I purchased this to upgrade my factory nav receiver and it is awesome, absolutely love the Android auto. I've had this radio for 4 days. I will try and update this review once I've had more time with it. I bought this radio because I wanted better sound quality and I wanted Google Maps while on road trips. The interface is also super clean which I think is the best looking out of all of the current available options. Update the firmware. My under came with firmware that was a month old. Updating it resolved a bunch of issues such as the FM/AM radio automatically playing after Android Auto disconnected (annoying since a lot of times it would just be loud static), it also resolved a bluetooth sound quality issue. I was just about to pack this radio back up and return it due to these issues. Thankfully the issues now seem to be more limited and tolerable. Android Auto has some connectivity issues. I have to sometime connect my phone multiple times to get it to work without the connection dropping between the radio and phone. I ordered a new USB cable to connect to my phone as my research shows that this may be the problem. There is some static that seems to be originating from this head unit. I can hear it at all volumes when nothing is playing. If I turn up the volume it gets louder. I've connected the unit directly to a battery with nothing else running and it's no better. The automatic dimmer works great. When it turns on at night it starts out dim. The Alpine HDR backup/forward cameras don't work with this unit. The cameras are recommen

Absolutely a amazing car stereo! Has everything I need! I installed this on my 2016 Wrangler and it was super easy! Since the the head unit is so shallow on the backside there was plenty of room to tuck away the wiring nicely. Plenty of features! Love the new touch capacitive screen 2 finger swipe mode for volume & channel changing. Works with all my steering wheel controls as well! Great sound and quality. Alpine nailed when they made this bad boy! Definitely getting a top of the line stereo for the price. Highly recommend this stereo.

I like this unit overall but it certainly has drawbacks too. If you are looking for a clean, very simple stereo for your car, this will do it. I won't go into sound quality because I do not have an amp attached to my stereo nor upscale speakers, and ultimately I don't believe that a car going down the road at 70mph is going to have wonderful sound quality anyways. This is certainly an inexpensive and acceptable option, and I will likely buy another for my classic car.

Pros: very small package for installation. I bought one to test on my current daily driver before purchase of one for an old muscle car. I'm impressed by the shallow installation and it will work well for an old dash that is having HVAC ducting added behind the dash panel. Apple Carplay works well most of the time. I had a couple issues on one long drive with audiobooks dropping out, but I believe that was a phone issue, not an Alpine stereo issue. Sound quality is acceptable or better. th

Cons: NO track forward or backward button on the face of the stereo. This is a huge pain in the butt. I would spend $100 more for this same unit with those buttons. what an oversight that is... no background changes on the stereo. the parking brake switch is not as simple as Pioneer's, so you can not use a normal relay to bypass the parking brake lockout. Buy a bypass off of Amazon specific to Alpine stereos- it's worth it. no customization on the icons

The Alpine iLX-W650 is a great system that incorporates a lot of smart design into a tiny package. That tiny package being the first smart design choice. With a shallow radio allowing installation in more cars without a lot of depth behind the dash, it also has the secondary bonus of allowing installation of the newly designed amplifier from Alpine fitting right to the back, eliminating the need to run the cables from the trunk or under a seat through your car for an amplifier. The functionality and responsiveness of the head unit is unmatched by any other head unit I've tested or used. Smart features like the two finger touch for volume control anywhere on the screen mean you never have to take your eyes off the road to find the tiniest of volume buttons. Overall the Alpine iLX-W650 has been a phenomenal head unit and packed with features for a great price.

This was a big improvement from the OEM stereo on my 2007 Toyota Tacoma. I bought this specifically to use with Android Auto and it has worked well. I like that the bootup is quick, it will auto launch Android Auto when the phone is connected to the USB, it has a nice clean design, and it is sooo slim since it is mechless. It is deceiving, but looks great installed.

Pros: Nice clean look, not tacky like other brands Has a mute button & voice command button Volume & control buttons are flush with screen, giving a streamlined appearance

Cons: Only con - this was so new when I got it, Alpine's website wasn't updated yet so I couldn't look up the manual ;). It is easy to use though.

I bought it for the sole reason that it was cheaper than the ilx-107 and I've loved it completely. Quick start up easy install and does everything it's claimed to do.

Pros: Slim Sleek Boots up fairly quick Plenty of tuning range

    Cons: None so far

    Not Impressed

I bought this to primarily use with Android Auto. It works well and is really quick to connect and respond. However, Android Auto never goes into dark mode at night. I've looked for a fix and have yet to find it. Big issue: The touchscreen swipe control feature only works when on the radio or bluetooth, but not when in Android Auto. Sure, Google probably wouldn't let them add that function in Android Auto given how it works, but point that out in your documentation. It was touted as a great feature, but if I can't use it, it's worthless. The text and screen are fuzzy because the resolution on this unit is severely lacking (800x480). For the cost, is actually quite behind the times. For $50 more you can get a Pioneer AVH-2440NEX that does the same thing (with even more features) and a much better quality resolution (2520 x 480). The dimming feature barely works, and lights up the car like a flashlight has been turned on when it's on the lowest setting. Not good. On a positive note, the Capacitive Touchscreen is very responsive. As for music it seems to be okay, but I feel like my music quality degraded after installing this unit. It sounds muddy, even after tweaking all kinds of settings. All in all, I'm not impressed and will probably be returning it. I expected more from Alpine and thought this might be a steal at this price. But, as always, you get what you pay for.

Pros: Capacitive Touchscreen Android Auto Quick and Responsive

Cons: Swipe control does not work when using Android Auto. Screen resolution is lacking and text looks fuzzy. Dimming feature does not dim enough.

Thanks to Kris's review, and confirmation with our Alpine representative, our Product Research guru, Stacey, updated our information to reflect the fact that the "swipe" controls do not work when Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is engaged. They only work with the Alpine onscreen menus.

I got this for another vehicle, I already own an ILX-107 for my highlander. I believe this one is a tremendous value. Looks like Alpine got the feedback from the customer to build the ideal unit. Wireless carplay is nice ,but I believe music sounds nicer via USB. with this unit you can use BT for casual streaming and wired for better quality. and compared to ilx-107 it has hi-res capability via usb memory stick. if you use the iphone the lightning connector limits the output to cd quality .

    Pros: display,form factor,optional amplifier

Cons: none so far, I will update if necessary.

    Apple CarPlay & Android Auto

Apple CarPlay: Apple CarPlay is a smarter, safer in-vehicle interface to operate your iPhone 5S or later (iOS 11.0+) with Lightning-connector. Your iPhone will need to be connected to the Alpine receiver's rear-panel USB port via the included USB extension cable and the Lightning-cable that came with your Apple device or Alpine's KCU-471i Lightning-to-USB cable (sold separately). Apple CarPlay is specially designed for driving scenarios. You can control CarPlay from the Alpine receiver's touchscreen controls or use Siri to control to control CarPlay with just your voice. You'll be able to use CarPlay to get directions, make phone calls, listen to voice mails, send/receive text messages, select music, and even control Apple HomeKit compatible devices in a way that keeps you focused on the road ahead.

    • Navigation Maps: The power and simplicity of Apple Maps comes to your dashboard; complete with turn-by-turn direction, traffic conditions, and estimated travel time. You can enter a new destination or choose a favorite or recent destination using the head unit's touchscreen or by simply asking Siri. CarPlay can also predict where you most likely want to go using addresses from your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars. If you have iOS 12.0 or newer on your iPhone with the latest version of Google Maps or Waze, you can choose to navigate via the Google Maps or Waze application instead of Apple Maps. Google Maps and Waze do not support Siri voice control, but will have their own proprietary voice control function which has to be accessed through a touchscreen icon on the receiver.
    • Phone & Messages: You'll be able to make calls, return missed calls, and listen to voicemails through the Alpine receiver. Siri can also help you do all these things. In addition, Siri can send, read, and reply to your text messages for you; so you never have to look at your iPhone while driving.
    • Music Library: Access your artists, song, playlists, and iTunes Radio on your iPhone using the Alpine receiver's touchscreen. Or, just tell Siri what you'd like to listen to. The head unit's touchscreen will display song/artist information, as well as album art in the background.
    • Apps: CarPlay also supports additional audio apps that you've downloaded to your iPhone for enjoying music, radio, sports, news, podcasts, & audiobooks (subscriptions and fees may apply). Control these apps from the head unit's touchscreen just like you would from your iPhone. Current supported apps include:
    • Apple HomeKit Compatible: CarPlay now supports control of Apple HomeKit enabled devices (sold separately) through Siri. Using CarPlay in your vehicle, you can ask Siri to close or open your garage door, turn on or off home lighting, increase or decrease the temperature of your thermostat, as well as control select functions of other Apple HomeKit enabled devices and appliances. Click here for a list of compatible Apple HomeKit products.
Note: Bluetooth hands-free phone and wireless music streaming cannot be used while Apple CarPlay is being used with a connected iPhone.

Android Auto: The Alpine iLX-W650 supports the Android Auto app for Android smartphones running OS Lollipop (5.0 or newer). Your compatible Android smartphone must be connected to the Alpine receiver's rear-panel USB port via the included USB extension cable and your phone's USB cable, plus be paired via Bluetooth (your vehicle's parking brake needs to be engaged to initially setup Android Auto). Android Auto extends the Android platform into your car in a way that's purpose-built for driving and automatically brings you useful information and organizes it into a simple on-screen interface that is simple to use in the vehicle. It's designed to minimize distraction so you can stay focused on the road ahead. Features of Android Auto include -

    • Google Assistant: The Alpine receiver enhances your Android Auto experience even more by incorporating Google Assistant using the head unit's external microphone and your car speakers for voice command and text-to-speech, which makes using Android Auto and all of its integrated applications fast, easy, and safe. You will need to press the "mic" button or say "OK Google" to activate the Google Assistant. Use the Google Assistant to make a call, send a message, reply to a message, get driving directions, listen to music, or even control select Google Assistant smarthome enabled devices.
    • Google & Waze Maps: Use Google Maps to get where you're going with on-screen maps, voice-guided navigation, live traffic information, lane guidance, and more. Select your destination by using the head unit's touchscreen or just say where you want to go through the unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology. You can even listen to music from your Android Auto device or other connected source device while using Google Maps. If you prefer, you can switch over to a simpler version of the community-based Waze navigation app (version 4.27 or higher).
    • Phone & SMS: With Android Auto you get access to your contacts and messages through the Alpine receiver while keeping your eyes on the road. Use the unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology to make a phone call, or have your text-messages read aloud to you while you concentrate on the road ahead; you can even reply to texts via voice command.
    • Music: Access your Android smartphone's music library through the Alpine receiver via Google Play Music. You'll be able to browse music like you do on your smartphone with song/artist information display and album art. Use the receiver's touchscreen to select songs or just say what song you want to listen to through the head unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology. You also get access to online music and radio stations from Amazon Music, Tidal, Pandora, Spotify, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, Slacker Radio, Tune-In, and more; as well as news, sports and talk radio apps. Music apps include song and station browsing, plus song/artist information and album art or station logo. Click here for a list of all compatible app for Android Auto.
    Notes:
    • Android smartphones with a USB Type-C connector (including the Pixel) may not function without appropriate USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable.
    • Bluetooth hands-free phone and wireless music streaming cannot be used while Android Auto is being used with a connected Android smartphone.
    • Use a USB cable that is under 6' long and avoid using any extension cable other than the one supplied.

Cellular & Data Plan Requirements: Access to CarPlay and Android Auto apps will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android smartphone to connect to the Internet. Your compatible Apple or Android device will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, LTE (4G), or WiFi.

Smartphone Charging: The Alpine iLX-W650 will also charge (5V/1A) your Android smartphone or Apple iPod/iPhone device while connected via USB with the vehicle's ignition switch set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position.

    USB & iPhone Integration

USB MSC Playback: In addition to iPhone & Android connectivity, the head unit's rear-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to connect a USB Mass Storage Class (MSC) device; such as a USB thumbdrive.A 42" USB extension cable is included. The unit supports playback and control of a variety of audio, video, and photo files stored on a compatible USB MSC device. • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth 4.2: The Alpine iLX-W650 features built-in Bluetooth version 4.2. The head unit's built-in Bluetooth allows you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles -

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.4 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Alpine iLX-W650.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) w/ Dual Phone Connection: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the iLX-W650 without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings (your phone must also support SSP). You can register up to four Bluetooth enabled devices with the Alpine head unit, and keep two phones connected simultaneously. That way you can switch between the driver's and passenger's phones a lot quicker without having to un-connect and re-connect devices. When a previous paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically connects the receiver and device.

Note: Your vehicle must be stopped with it's parking brake engaged to initially pair a Bluetooth device.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ Integrated & External Mic): The Alpine iLX-W650 supports wireless hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone (including iPhone & Android). You'll be able to receive and make calls using the iLX-W650. The iLX-W650 allows you to carry on a phone conversation using the included external microphone and your car audio speakers. You can emphasize or weaken the volume level of the phone caller, the ring tone, and the microphone to fit your own preference (0-11).

    • Receiving Calls: Incoming calls are announced by a caller ring tone through your vehicle's speakers (music will be muted) & a Caller ID message across your Alpine head unit's touchscreen display. You can answer an incoming phone call by pressing the telephone icon button on the Alpine receiver's front-panel. Press the telephone icon button again to end the call.
    • Making Calls: The Alpine iLX-W650 provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone. The Alpine iLX-W650 features full phone book access, call history, and voice-dialing with compatible phones.
      • Phone Number Entry: Allows you to directly dial a phone number from the head unit's touchscreen.
      • Phonebook (with ABC search): Your contacts and their phone numbers can be downloaded from your compatible mobile phone. You can then search the contacts of your phonebook alphabetically.
      • Call History: The previously dialed, received, or missed numbers can be retrieved and dialed from memory.
      • Voice Dialing: If you have a voice-dial capable phone (including iPhone & Android), you can dial a phone contact by simply speaking the name of your contact or the telephone number.
Note: All Bluetooth phone functions are available with or without the parking brake engaged.

Audio Streaming: The Alpine iLX-W650 can stream stored music, music apps, and other content from your Bluetooth source device (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). The iLX-W650 will be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Fast Forward/Rewind and Random/Repeat. Advanced music browsing (such as song/artist/album search) will still need to be done from your Bluetooth source device. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title (no Album Art).

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Alpine iLX-W650 has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press the head unit's "Mic icon" button to engage Siri and use the external microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will be heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the iLX-W650 and its microphone. You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Alpine iLX-W650; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

    Apple Music+SiriusXM+AM/FM Radio

Apple Music Radio: You can playback Apple Music Radio on your USB-connected Apple iPhone w/ Lightning connector (5S and up) through the Alpine iLX-W650. Audio & DSP Section

CTA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CTA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CTA (Consumer Technology Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CTA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CTA-2006 Power Rating: 16 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 45 watts x 4 channels
Optional Add-On Amplifiers: Add Alpine's KTP-445A Head Unit Power Pack (sold separately) to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445A is compact enough to install behind the Alpine receiver and features a proprietary harness that plugs directly that plugs directly into the iLX-W650 (you will need to splice or crimp the wires from the amplifier's harness to a vehicle-specific harness adapter). Or, you can add Alpine's KT-A450 PowerStack amplifier (sold separately) for 50 watts x 4-channels of power. The KT-A450 amplifier mounts to the back of the iLX-W650 receiver and together they fit in a standard Double-DIN (4") opening (the KT-A450 does not include a direct plug-in harness).

Note: Mounting the KT-A450 amplifier to the back of the iLX-W650 increases the overall installation depth of the receiver to 4.585".

6ch/4V Preouts + Sub Control: The iLX-W650 has three sets of 4-volt RCA pre-outs (Front/Rear/Sub) for connection of external amplifiers. The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The subwoofer output level can be adjusted independently from the main volume setting (0-15); so even at low volume settings the subwoofer is still audible. The subwoofer output phase can be set to Normal (0°) or Reverse (180°).

High-Pass & Low-Pass Crossovers: This unit is equipped with active high-pass and low-pass crossovers which limit the frequencies delivered to the speaker and line-level outputs. Each speaker channel is controlled independently, so each speaker pair can be driven by the frequencies for which have they been optimally designed. The crossover adjusts the HFP (high pass filter) or LPF (low pass filter) frequency point of each speaker pair, and also the slope (how fast the filter rolls off the highs or lows).

    • High Pass Filter: The Alpine head unit is equipped with a high-pass filter for its speaker-level output and front/rear-channel preamp outputs. You can set the unit's high-pass filter center frequency point to 20Hz, 25Hz, 31.5Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, or Off (through). The slope of the high pass filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct.
    • Low Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer output low-pass filter can be set to 20Hz, 25Hz, 31.5Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, or Off (through). The slope of the low pass filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct.

Note: In order to access the head unit's crossover network, your vehicle must be stopped with its parking brake engaged.

Equalizer: The Alpine iLX-W650 is equipped with a variety of EQ Presets and EQ frequency bands to tailor the music to your listening prefrence. The EQ settings are applied to all sources.

    • Preset EQ: The simplest way to adjust the head unit's EQ curve is by select from on of the 6 EQ presets. You can choose from Flat (off), Jazz, Rock, Classical, Pop, or Custom (User). The Custom mode allows you to manually adjust a 3-Band or 9-Band EQ.
    • 3-Band EQ: The 3-Band EQ allows you to manually adjust the Alpine receiver's Bass, Midrange, and Treble from -7 to +7 dB for a better listening experience.
    • 9-Band Parametric EQ: The advanced 9-Band Parametric EQ allows you to adjust the center frequency, Q-factory, and level for a more custom listening experience. Band 1 can be set 20Hz-100Hz, Band 2 can be set to 63Hz-325Hz, Band 3 can be set to 125Hz-500Hz, Band 4 can be set to 250Hz-1kHz, Band 5 can be set to 500Hz-2kHz, Band 6 can be set to 1kHz-4kHz, Band 7 can be set to 2kHz-7.2kHz, Band 8 can be set to 5.8 kHz-12kHz, and Band 9 can be set to 9kHz-20kHz. The Q-factor for each band can be set to Narrow, Medium, or Wide. The level for each band can be set to -7 to +7 dB). You can save three 9-Band EQ presets.

Note: In order to access the head unit's 9-Band Parametric EQ, your vehicle must be stopped with its parking brake engaged.

Time Correction: This unit is able to delay the audio signal to the speakers closest to the listener with its built-in Time Correction feature. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance between the left and right speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance (0-336.6cm) or time delay (0.0-9.9msec) of each speaker and subwoofer to the listener. You are able to save three time correction presets.

Note: In order to access Time Correction, your vehicle must be stopped with its parking brake engaged.

Media Xpander: Alpine's exclusive Media Xpander HD is engineered to bring out the musical details lost in compressed media, and it is adjustable per source to get the most out of your digital audio media. The Media Xpander makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. The Tuner, USB memory, CarPlay, Android Auto, Pandora, and Bluetooth Audio will be able to reproduce the music more clearly even in vehicles with a lot of road noise.

Note: In order to access the Media Xpander, your vehicle must be stopped with its parking brake engaged.

Beep Guide: This function will give audible feedback with varying tones depending upon the button pressed. This feature can be turned On or Off.

7" Capacitive Touchscreen: The 7" capacitive touchscreen boasts a 800 x 480 resolution (1.15 million pixels) with a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. The touchscreen monitor provides a balanced picture, not over-emphasizing dark or light areas, so album art, map screens, and videos are seen with greater clarity. The capacitive touchscreen requires less pressure, responds faster, and can recognize multiple touch points simultaneously; all advantages when compared to traditional resistive touchscreen displays.

    • Swipe Control: The new swipe control interface is designed for easy use so drivers can keep their eyes on the road. A two-finger swipe motion moving up, down, left, or right will control volume up/volume down and track skip forward/track skip backward. The two-finger swipe can be done at any location on the touchscreen, eliminating the need for the driver to search and touch a specific area for each command. The swipe control feature is not compatible with CarPlay or Android Auto
    • Touch-Sensitive Buttons: Conveniently located touch-sensitive buttons (including Power/Menu, Source, Volume Up/Down, Mute, Phone/Answer, and Voice/Mic)s are accessible along the bottom edge of the 7" touchscreen monitor for quick access and simple control.

Note: For safety and legal reasons, the iLX-W650 features a video lock-out feature to prevent the driver from viewing a video source while the vehicle is in motion. To watch a video source, the vehicle must be stopped with the parking brake engaged and the ignition in the ACC or ON position. This also includes advanced setup menus. CarPlay & Android Auto do not require the Parking Brake to be engaged.

Brightness (Dimmer) Control: You can adjust the brightness of the LCD backlight from -14 to +15 and the brightness of the button illumination from -2 to +2. You can then select one of the following modes for both the LCD's backlight and button illumination - Auto (adjusts the brightness of the background illumination based on the ambient light in your vehicle), On (keeps the background illumination of the monitor dark), or Off (keeps the background illumination of the monitor bright).

Clock Display: The iLX-W650 lets you select between a 12 hour or 24 hour clock, and is diplayed on each source screen. The clock can be set to turn off with the unit, or continue to display after the unit is turned off (as long as the vehicle's key is in the accessory or on position).

Steering Wheel Control Input: The head unit features a 3.5mm steering wheel control (SWC) input on the rear of the chassis that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel controls when used with an optional (sold separately - check for your vehicle's compatibility).

Dual Camera Inputs: Two camera inputs (consisting of composite video jacks) allow for the addition of multiple cameras including a rear-view, side-view, and/or front-view camera (both sold separately - see Accessories Tab). You can adjust the Brightness, Color, and Contrast of the Alpine receiver's camera inputs.

    • Guidelines: The rear-view camera function also provides on-screen color-coded guidelines to assist you when backing up your vehicle into a parking space.
    • Auto Rearview Switching: If a rear-view camera is connected, you should also connect the unit's reverse lead wire (Orange/white) to your vehicle's back-up lamp circuit. When properly connected, the image from the rear-view camera automatically appears on the monitor when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. Automatic video switching takes approximately 0.75 seconds.
Note: The rear view camera feature is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

Yes - depending on your sunglasses. The screen is polarized, but the direction of the polarization works great with my sunglasses. If I tilt my head to about 45 degrees, you can see it darken as the 2 polarized surfaces line up. My sunglasses are prescription polarized sunglasses from Costco.

Any recommendations for an install kit with a sleeve that will work with kta-450 amp connected?
    [ pat  Apr 14, 2019 ]

There is no special mounting kit needed for that. Just the standard double din mounting kit. You will want to make sure you have enough depth to take it all when the amp it attached to the rear. The only inputs this head unit has are the 2 video inputs for external camera support and the inputs for steering wheel control and external mic.
