Features

Overview: The Alpine PWD-X5 5-channel amplifier features an 8" subwoofer driver, powered by a single mono channel at 165W RMS (240W peak), and 4 full-range speaker output channels at 25W RMS (50W peak), all in a compact enclosure that's designed to fit under seats or in tight spaces.

Note: The Alpine PWD-X5's four full-range speaker outputs are designed to handle a 4-ohm load (minimum) and cannot be bridged or driven at 2-ohms.

DSP & Tuning: The PWD-X5 offers internal DSP (Digital Signal Processing) for fine tuning the system. Control of the DSP parameters can be done from a Bluetooth connected smartphone using the 'PWD-X5' smartphone app, available for free on the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Setup can also be performed using a PC connected to the amp, with the supplied USB cable, running the 'PWD-X5' software available from Alpine's Support page (compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10). DSP features include both common and individual functions for each of the 5 output channels, and include the following:

  • Volume: Provides both Master Volume and Subwoofer Volume controls.
  • Inputs: Choices include the high-level inputs, low-level inputs, and BT streaming.
  • Graphic EQ: Each of the 5 output channels can have its own 10-band graphic EQ. Bands are preset at 31Hz, 65Hz, 125Hz, 250Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, and 2kHz, 4kHz, 8kHz, and 16kHz. Adjustment range for each band is from -12dB to +12dB and include individual Q adjustment or width, adjustable from 0.404 to 28.852.
  • Xover (Crossover): High-pass and low-pass crossovers are available for each channel with an adjustable cutoff frequency ranging from 20Hz to 20kHz. Channels 1-4 can have a selectable slope with choices of 6dB or 12dB/octave. Channel 5 can have a 6, 12, 18, or 24dB/octave slope.
  • Time Correction (Delay): Each of the 5 channels can be delayed to vary the time alignment for each speaker. Units of measurement include ms, inches, and cm. In the ms setting, the time can be varied from 0ms to 5.396ms.
  • Output: This page allows each of the 5 Output channels to have individual adjustments for Level, Mute, and Polarity Invert.
  • Balance/Fade: An X/Y graphic display allows the focal point, representing the balance and fade position, to be moved around the vehicle with a single finger-swipe.
  • Presets: Up to 15 configurations can be saved and recalled as presets.

Bluetooth: The PWD-X5 features a USB Bluetooth adapter, allowing you to both stream music from a Bluetooth enabled playback device, as well as provide Bluetooth control for the DSP settings. A USB type-A socket on the amp is provided for plugging in the included USB Bluetooth adapter.

Wired Controller: A PWD-X5 wired controller is provided for quick adjustment from the driver's location. The controller can be used to adjust the Main Volume and Subwoofer Volume, change Sources, and select any stored Presets. Wiring for the controller is integrated into the provided USB cable used to connect a PC to the amplifier. A proprietary 4-pin connector splits off of the USB cable to plug into the controller's harness. A second USB port on the amp is used specifically for controller and PC connection.

Controller Dimensions:

  • Overall:
    • Width: 3.64"
    • Height: 1.90"
    • Depth: 1.26"
  • Cutout Required for Flush Mounting:
    • Width: 3.47"
    • Height: 1.72"
  • Flush Mount Depth: 0.74"

Amp Wiring: The PWD-X5 includes 4 RCA inputs for connecting to an aftermarket radio. It also includes a 26-pin harness containing 4 pairs of speaker wires for both input and output signals. This 15' harness can be run from the amp to the dash, when connecting to a factory headunit, providing both the speaker-level input to the amp as well as the return signal that gets spliced back into the factory speaker wiring. A 9" pigtail from the wiring harness is used for connecting the power extension wire to the battery. The amplifier's 5' ground wires are also included in the wiring harness and are terminated into a single ring-terminal. Speaker Input and Output wires use the same color coding, but are labeled for each function:

  • Yellow: +12VDC Battery
  • Black: Chassis Ground
  • Blue: Remote Input
  • (2)White: LF+ In/Out
  • (2)White/Black: LF- In/Out
  • (2)Green: LR+ In/Out
  • (2)Green/Black: LR- In/Out
  • (2)Gray: RF+ In/Out
  • (2)Gray/Black: RF- In/Out
  • (2)Purple: RR+ In/Out
  • (2)Purple/Black: RR- In/Out

Auto Remote Turn-On: A slide-switch on the amp can be set to REM, if using a low-level input signal (RCA) into the amp. The included Remote wire in the main wiring harness gets connected to the radio's remote output, for activating the amp. If using speaker-level inputs, the slide-switch can be set to DC, allowing the amp to use the power from the speaker input wires to trigger it on and off.

Customer Q&A

24 questions already asked

Q
It does not appear that this has any kind of subwoofer signal input. Does it get the sub input signals from the full range back channels? If so, does that impact whether the back speakers are full range or not?
richard  Jun 22, 2023
1 answer
A
The subwoofer does indeed get the signal from the inputs (whether RCA or speaker-level), Richard. The four 25-watt full-range channels on the Alpine PWD-X5 do have an adjustable high-pass filter that works independently from the subwoofer's adjustments. I hope this helps!

Q
Will the alpine pad-x5 work with my 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 regular cab wt with the factory 6 speaker system?
james  Nov 26, 2022

A
This should work nicely, but to more accurately assess compatibility with your truck and your audio needs, please reach out to our advisor via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695.

Q
Can you hook up an amp and 12" subwoofer to it?
eli  Oct 11, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Eli, and thank you for your question. The Alpine PWD-X5 5 channel amp has 25 watts for the main speakers x 4 channels, the one channel that has 165 watts is already powering the built in 8 inch subwoofer. Short answer, no it will not power an additional 12 inch subwoofer
hogan  Oct 11, 2022 (Staff)
Q
What type of signal is needed for the REM in to activate the amp (i.e. +12V, Ground)? In short, will power from the ACC relay work on this input?
christopher  Aug 10, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Christopher, and thank you for your question. If you are running an aftermarket stereo, use the remote trigger of the stereo, or 12 volt acc relay, cigarette lighter acc etc. If you are using a factory radio, and speaker level into this DSP/Amp the DC switch will turn on and off the amplifier when it sense's a signal. In that case you would not need to connect the REM wire.

Q
Does the DSP in this system do 'bass restoration' to correct a factory head unit's bass roll-off? (similar to AudioControl LC2i?)

Q
I am considering this sub for my 2018 Tacoma SR5 to boost my factory system. Do I need ta Tacoma wiring harness? Or do I have to cut wires? Has anyone else put this in a late model Tacoma and how was your experience and results?
brant  Aug 30, 2021
1 answer
A
It is possible to install this one model without using the special harness which will need to be spliced into the stock wiring. If your have a compatible Tacoma, then the PSU-300TCM model with the T harness can make for a simpler install

Q
What speakers can I connect to it?
porfirio  Apr 09, 2021

Q
Can I keep my factory radio functionality with this setup? Like controlling volume and other settings from the car radio.
taita  Aug 14, 2020
1 answer
A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Q
The wired remote control doesn't work. Does anybody have a similar problem? Can anyone share any tips to get it working. Bluetooth is disabled and no PC is connected as per the user manual and the screen on the remote control just shows the Alpine logo over and over.

A
The "controller" will NOT work thru the app. It must be play independently (directly) via inputs; again NOT from the app.
tony  Aug 14, 2021
A
That can happen when the wrong cable/port has been used to connect the remote. However, if you are using the original equipment plugged into the proper port on the amp, then I recommend contacting a technician for help as something else must be causing the issue. If it was purchased from us, I recommend contacting our technical support using their direct dial phone number that's been included on the order invoice

Q
How does the x5 compare to the PWE-S8? Is it superior to the S8 or just marginally better?
ralph  Jun 13, 2020
1 answer
A
The x5 has a 4-channel amp and DSP, it's not just a powered sub

Q
I am planned to buy alpine Pwd x 5. So please suggest best component speakers for the subjected amp?
sudarsanan  May 06, 2020
1 answer
A
I'm using stock speakers, but seeing as the 4ch amp is only outputting 25W RMS, and aftermarket components will handle it just fine, so it really depends on your vehicle application and budget...

Q
If my truck has 2 tweeters on a pillars, 2 in doors and 2 in rear would this amp work even though itâ??s considered a 4 channel? Or would I need a 6 channel ? Thanks

George, this is highly dependent on your set up. You should reach out to an advisor for more personalized help! https://www.crutchfield.com/support/ContactUs.aspx
thomas  Feb 13, 2020 (Staff)
A
Usually your door speakers and tweeters are on one channel with a crossover (this is how my front speakers work) - If this is the case it will work fine. If they are independent signals, you would need something more complex.
brian  Feb 11, 2020
Q
Can I connect two of these amps together? I would like to have one sub under each seat. 2017 F150 Regular cab fitment. Thanks.

My application is strictly on amp (in a Corvette). But the technical people at Crutchfield I am sure could answer ow you can link two subwoofers.

Q
Does the DSP have a pink noise feature so you can tune EQ to your cars unique cabin space?
tom  Sep 05, 2019
1 answer
A
There is not Auto-tuning, Auto-EQ, or Auto-DSP functionality with this unit, it is all done manually.
thomas  Sep 17, 2019 (Staff)
Q
Does the timecorrection and EQ have an auto adjustment with a microphone? or is there any sort of auto adjusting for timecorrection and eq?
tom  Sep 05, 2019
1 answer
A
The Time Correction, EQ, and DSP are all manually done on this unit. There is no Auto-EQ, or Auto-DSP funtionality.
thomas  Sep 17, 2019 (Staff)
Q
Can you have a different EQ setting for each input? For example, I would want to have a different EQ setting from the speaker input from the factory head unit, and a different eq from the bluetooth which would be going from a phone straight to the amp.
tom  Sep 05, 2019
1 answer
A
You can save the eq settings and use the control app to switch between them which allows you have one stored for each input. Technically, you can have up to 15 saved presets so you can go even further if you wanted like a setting for different genres, etc..

Q
Does it require an amp wiring kit, and if it does what size AWG would it be?
roenik  Apr 29, 2019

It does not. It has all the necessary power, ground, turn-on and fuses in the box. You may need RCA cables or speaker wire depending on what type of input you intend to use.

A
Hi Roenik! For detailed product information, and to be sure you're going to get everything you'll need for your install, I recommend contacting any member of our Advisor Team, they will be happy to assist you with this! You can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
What if your car donâ??t have RCA hook up in the back of your factory radio? Should you install a LOC? Do you have to get a separate harness?
david  Mar 05, 2019
1 answer
A
The PWD-X5 includes 4 RCA inputs for connecting to an aftermarket radio. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the Alpine's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table.

Q
Is this amp 2 ohm stable on the 4 channel portion of the built in amp? I can't find any mention of 2 ohm anywhere online.
emre  Feb 28, 2019
1 answer
A
I can only find information stating 4 ohm power output. I do not expect it will be compatible with a true 2 ohm load. That being said, using smaller gauge speaker wire (like stock wire) will increase a speakers resistance so that this amp sees a 4 ohm load with a 2 ohm speaker My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul
jason  Mar 06, 2019 (Staff)
Q
is this plug and play wiring for a stock head unit in a 2012 tacoma? if so will the wiring harness allow under seat mounting?
owen  Feb 10, 2019
1 answer
A
While the Alpine comes with most all of the wiring you'll need for the installation, it is not vehicle-specific so, it is not a "plug and play" installation. It is made to be very compact (9-11/16"W x 3-3/16"H x 13-13/16"D) so, it can fit under a seat in most vehicles.
