About the Alpine S-W10D2

Bob Bihlmayer

Great bass in less space

To create great bass, you need the best in materials and engineering. Alpine's S-Series subwoofers apply technology from their higher end subs to bring you the depth and punch that'll make your tunes come alive. And to make things even better, these subs are about an inch shallower than their predecessors, making them great candidates for locations where regular high-power subs won't fit.

Advanced materials

The S-W10D2 10" sub can handle up to 600 watts RMS, so you can drive it hard without any worries. The tough Kevlar® treated cone stays rigid under pressure, while its rubber High Amplitude Multi-Roll (HAMR) surround enables maximum excursion for impressive performance. Its dual 2-ohm voice coils allow for extra wiring flexibility, which helps if you plan on adding another subwoofer down the line. Also, it rocks in both sealed and ported boxes, so you can choose an enclosure that suits your tastes.

Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine S-Series subwoofer uses a parabolic cone structure, with a Kevlar reinforced pulp cone and a Poly-Mica-Talc dust cap. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone material. The oversized, inverted dust cap increases rigidity and virtually eliminates cone distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS) that allows a large linear excursion and greater SPL. The HAMRS design allows extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area.

Progressive Spider: The progressive spider has reinforced layer tinsel leads to ensure reliable and consistent control of the tinsel leads and eliminate any mechanical noise or interference often seen in high excursion cone designs.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve extended pole geometry ensures a symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to reduce distortion and further improve power handling and output.

Dual Voice Coils: For system flexibility, the woofer has two 2Ω voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1Ω load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents a 4Ω load.

Spring Terminals: The spring post terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, or bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers. These jumpers allow you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 1Ω load) or series (for a 4Ω load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Alpine recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume between 0.45 and 0.9 cubic feet, with an ideal volume of 0.58 cubic feet. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box Volume: The recommended ported box volume ranges from 0.8 cubic feet to 1.35 cubic feet, with the ideal size being 1.13 cubic feet, using a slot port measuring 10" (W) x 1" (H) x 17" (L).

A
You can use either a ported or sealed box with this Alpine S-W10D2 10", Mason. Alpine recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume between 0.45 and 0.9 cubic feet, with an ideal volume of 0.58 cubic feet. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music. This is also suited for a ported box, so if you prefer you can us a ported box with a volume ranging from 0.8 cubic feet to 1.35 cubic feet, with the ideal size being 1.13 cubic feet, using a slot port measuring 10" (W) x 1" (H) x 17" (L). Basically these Alpine sound great, whatever box you put them in!

Q
I have a 2 channel amp. Can I run 1 coil on each channel. Left channel on one coil, right channel on the other? Would differences in signals damage the sub? (2 ohm load per channel)
kristian  Jul 03, 2022

A
When using a 2 channel amp to power a sub you're typically bridging the channels to get the most power out of your amplifier. You will take a positive from channel 1 and negative from channel 2 to bridge your amp. This particular sub has dual voice coils, so you'll want to make sure the wiring is done properly according to what your amp outputs. Most amps can only bridge to 4 ohms. With the Alpine S-W10D2 you would likely be wiring in series to 4 ohms on your 2 channel amp. If you need any help with wiring or making sure your amp works well with this sub, give us a call at 1-800-324-9695 and we'll be happy to check into that!

This would be possible with some pretty special circumstances, Kris! I'd Advise to wire this Alpine S-W10D2's coils differently in a series to 4 ohms. Most 2 channel amps are bridgeable at 4 ohms, and this would allow you to send a mono channel to the Alpine S-W10D2, alleviating any concern about damage. We give you lifetime Technical Support on all orders, so if you need help deciding how to wire anything, you can always give us a call!

Q
I have 2 Alpine S-W10D2's in a custom box under the seat in my 2001 Chevy Silverado. Should I wire them for 2 Ohms or 4 Ohms to sound the best?

sorry, I never ended up using this alpine sub. It was too big for my custom box and could not make any adjustments to the custom box I ordered. Again, sorry I couldn't help out. Reno from P-Town California.

It depends what your amp can do, this sub cannot be wired 4 ohms, the D2 at the end indicates its a 2 ohm voice coils. If you wire 1 sub with the coils in series it will go down to 1 ohm. Call Crutchfield, wiring with a impedance that is too low will damage an amplifier. I wired 1 sub with the coils in series to a Mmats D500.1 which has it max output @ 1ohm. This amp ate kickers comps for lunch and this sub as done fine. Well built

Q
Would a JL Audio JX500/1D amp be enough to power 2 Apline S-W10D's in a small sealed box?

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.
