About the Rockford Fosgate DSR1

Upgrade your system

Your car computer controls its audio system, so upgrading the sound has to include integrating with your car's digital network. Rockford Fosgate's DSR1 combines an integration module with a full-featured digital signal processor so you can add an aftermarket amplifier without losing any of your factory controls or audio notifications, and achieve the high-fidelity sound the system lacked.

A simpler way

In the past, in order to upgrade a factory system you'd have to first sum all the outputs, reduce the signal strength to line-level, remove the factory EQ and crossover settings, and then apply your custom audio processing and amplification. The DSR-1 simplifies this process by using the unprocessed line-level signals from the factory receiver, so you can tune the sound without fighting the factory settings. Your factory radio still works like it always has, and you retain all your vehicle's features.

Rockford Fosgate + iDatalink Maestro = good times

The DSR1 includes an iDatalink Maestro AR amplifier replacement module, which can use a vehicle-specific T-harness (sold separately) to supply a clean audio signal plus digital control data to the processor. Using a Windows PC, you go to iDatalink's website and download the firmware for your specific vehicle to your DSR1. It will then be able to translate your vehicle's digital instructions, like turning down the music and making only one speaker active during Bluetooth calls, for example.

Fine-tune your sound via your mobile device

The DSR1 uses the same technology as Rockford Fosgate's 3Sixty.3 digital signal processor to help you obtain and enjoy amazing sound quality from your vehicle's sound system. After connecting — via Bluetooth to an iOS or Android device — and loading the PerfectTune app, the main user interface screen displays your speaker configuration, an EQ graph, the EQ controls, and more.

8 channels handles almost any system

Each channel has its own crossover network, level adjustment, time alignment setting, polarity switch, and 31 bands of equalization, so there's no excuse for anything but perfect sound. The DSR1 offers eight output channels of processed signal for your amplifiers to send on to your tweeters, speakers, and subs.

Important Note: This Rockford Fosgate processor can either be used with an iDatalink harness in "Vehicle-specific" mode, or it can operate without needing a vehicle-specific harness in "Universal" mode, when upgrading a standard, non-premium factory or aftermarket system. See "Configuration Menu" under the Details tab for more information.

More details on the Rockford Fosgate DSR1

Product Research

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate DSR1 is an interactive signal processor designed to allow you install an aftermarket amplifier and still keep the factory radio along with all its controls and features. Co-developed with ADS (Automotive Data Solutions), the DSR1 combines key features of Rockford's 3Sixty digital processor with a flashable iDatalink Maestro module, and is capable of being used out of the box with either high or low level outputs from a factory or aftermarket radio. It has 4 input channels, a coax digital input (S/PDIF), and a stereo RCA AUX input, all of which can be assigned to the 8 output channels. The DSR1 module can also be flashed with vehicle specific firmware for select Ford and Chrysler vehicles and, along with an optional T-harness (sold separately), allows an aftermarket amp to be installed while bypassing the factory amplifier. After initial flashing, Rockford's PerfectTune app, for Android and iOS, will allow setup and configuration of the DSR1 to be done from a Bluetooth enabled smartphone or tablet.

Note: The DSR1 module must be updated to the latest firmware, regardless of the installation type. Flashing/updating can only be done on a Windows PC. Macintosh is not supported.

Configuration Menu: The initial module flashing is where the DSR1 will get configured for either Vehicle Specific or Universal modes.

  • Universal Mode: In Universal mode the processor does not compensate for any factory EQ curves, only in Vehicle Specific mode, and there's no input signal summing with the DSR1. Six pairs of RCA input plugs along with a coax digital (S/PDIF) are provided on the Input Harness.
    • Aftermarket Headunit: If installing the DSR1 with an aftermarket headunit, the RCA connectors will get attached directly to the radio's pre-outs.
    • Non-Amplified (T-Harness): For installations into factory non-amplified vehicles, T-harnesses are available for select model vehicles, making installation much faster and easier. Please check our Vehicle Guide to see what T-harnesses may be available for your vehicle.
    • Non-Amplified (Hardwire): If installing the DSR1along with a factory radio without a vehicle specific harness, or an aftermarket radio with no pre-outs, speaker wire to RCA adapters such as the XD-CLRAIC2-SW or the KISL (both sold separately) will be required.
  • Vehicle Specific: In Vehicle Specific mode, using a T-harness, the processor will read the factory data signals allowing use of the factory radio's controls such as volume, balance, and fade. In either mode, the DSR1's 4 input channels (front/rear) are combined to provide the subwoofer output signal. After the initial flashing is complete, Rockford's PerfectTune app will then be used for the setup and configuration of the DSR1. The PerfectTune Home screen includes two main controls, Sub Level and Punch EQ (bass boost), as well as soft-keys for Setup, Tune, and Bluetooth connectivity. From this screen, the user can also pick either Main or Aux, which allows all of the tuning options to be applied to both the Main inputs as well as the Aux input, if being used. This gives a combined total of over 248 bands of channel EQ. The Basic Tune section includes a Master EQ with 7 bands of equalization that affect the entire output. The following options are available from the PerfectTune Home screen:
  • Preferences: The Preferences menu allows you to assign the two Home-screen "sliders" (Default is Sub Level and Punch EQ), as well as options for Auto Close and Crossover Plot Overlay with the choices being On or Off.
  • Device Setup: This screen allows you to quickly view the main settings after running the Setup Wizard. This will display the Device Mode (Stand-alone or Vehicle Specific), overall System Gain, PLC knob function if used, and the Input/Output configuration.
  • Setup Wizard: This menu is used for initial configuration of both the Main inputs as well as the Aux input.
    • Device Mode: This determines how the DSR1 will be used, either Stand alone or Maestro T-harness (Vehicle Specific).
    • Input Source: This setting determines the type of input signal: Low Level (RCA), High Level (Speaker), and S/PDIF (Digital).
    • Input Level Switch Position: After selecting either RCA or Speaker level, this option is a reminder to move the physical switch on the DSR1 to either High Level or Low Level.
    • Headunit Sensitivity: This sets the input sensitivity range based off of the headunit's pre-out voltage. Choices are from 0.5 Vrms to 4+ Vrms.
    • Input Channel Configuration: Determines what input types will be connected. Choices are: Fronts (2-ch), Fronts + Rears (4-ch), and Fronts + Sub (4-ch). A convenient pictogram shows which plugs on the DSR1 will be used.
    • PLC2: The DSR1 includes an RJ-45 jack for the optional PLC2 Remote Level Control. This is a rotary control that can be mounted under the dash for quick, on-the-fly adjustment of one of three options: Subwoofer Level, Punch Bass, or Master Level. This menu option determines if the PLC2 will be used and what function it will control.
  • Tune: This setting will give 2 options: Basic Tuning, and Advanced Tuning.
    • Basic Tuning: This is a 7 Band equalizer that affects the entire output of the DSR1 signal. The Bands can range from 63 Hz to 15.9 kHz with Q factor and Gain settings for each. The Gain can vary each Band's level from + 6 dB to - 17 dB.
    • Advance Tuning: This option allows more detailed settings to be edited for each of the 4 sets of output channels (Front, Spare, Rear, and Subwoofer).
      • Trim Level: Dual level controls allow volume offset for each of the 4 sets of outputs. Left and Right channels for each can be varied independently or can be linked together. Each speaker can be muted from this page as well.
      • Time Alignment: Each output channel can individually be delayed from 0 - 10 msec. Delay can be set in either milliseconds, inches, or centimeters and also include a phase-reversal option for each channel.
      • Crossover: All 4 pairs of outputs can be filtered if needed. Crossover options include:
        • Filter Type: All-pass, Band-pass, Low-pass, and High-pass
        • Filter Slope: This determines how steep the cutoff slope will be. Choices are: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, and 48 dB/octave slopes.
        • Frequency: This allows you to pick the frequency of the cutoff point. The Band-pass setting gives 2 frequency options; High-pass and Low-pass. A wide range of frequencies are provided and will vary depending on the Filter Type selected.
      • Equalizer: The Advanced Tuning EQ offers up to 31 bands of equalization for each of the 4 sets of outputs.
        • Band: Selects which frequency band will be adjusted. Range is 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
        • Q: Determines how many frequencies around the cutoff point will be affected by the boost or attenuation. Range is from 0.1 to 10.0.
        • Gain: This controls the amount of boost or attenuation at the Cutoff point. Range is from -24.0 dB to +6.0 dB divided into 0.5 dB increments.
  • Preset Management: The DSR1 allows you to save all of the settings as a Preset in one of 4 memory locations, which can be saved and retrieved via the PerfectTune app.
  • Bluetooth: Pairing of a Bluetooth enabled device for setup and configuration is done with this setting.

Module: All of the inputs and outputs of the DSR1 are as follows:

  • Input Side:
    • 18-pin input harness: Includes Front, Rear, and Aux In RCA connectors, S/PDIF coax digital input, and 18 AWG wires for power, ground, remote in and remote out.
    • Vehicle: This socket is where one of the vehicle specific T-harnesses will plug into.

The DSR1 has a total of 8 outputs, typically you could run Front L-R Full Range (mid w/tweeter crossover), Front L-R Mid Range, Rear L-R Full Range (ie. Coaxial or Mid Range w/tweeter crossover), and lastly (2) L-R Subs. If your seperates are bi-ampable you could split your 2-ways with a 4 channel amp. Pretty extensive setup to tune though. The DSR can be manipulated to do many things but definitely take a look at the downloadable User Manual to view a typical setup diagram then use you imagination. Just remember you ONLY have 8 outputs. Good luck.
[ Robert  Jul 02, 2020 ]
Yes it can, it can control all of your speakers separately
[ marlon  Jul 01, 2020 ]
Absolutely! Takes some skill and knowledge of stereo equipment as well as wiring to properly install effectively. But once connected, you'll love it! I'm currently using this and another sound processor as not to bog it down and independently separate channels into their own amplifiers and a few crossovers

I have a 2016 Ram 1500 without a factory amp. I can still use the DSR1 and T harness to install aftermarket amps?
[ Douglas  May 21, 2020 ]
1 answer
You sure can! There are T-harnesses that allow this to work in the factory systems without separate amps in those pickups. If you need help selecting the correct T-harness, I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to get that help

can this be added to my 2020 Ram Rebel with the Harmon Kardon system? i want to add a different set of custom subs and not sure if this will work. obviously i can just use existing wires going to the factory sub, however i was under the assumption that there will be a quality loss using just line out to the new amp esp coming from the stock amp. thank in advance
[ FREDERICK  May 06, 2020 ]

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

If I buy the DSR-1, do I also need the Maestro RR interface unit? 2016 Jeep Renegade

I don't know the answer to your question. I purchased the DSR-1 for my 2015 Harley Davidson Road Glide Special Motorcycle.
[ DeQuarry  Apr 14, 2020 ]
No. Stick with the DSR1. I had some problems with this unit to begin with but when they provided a firmware update all worked well. Be sure to go the their website and down load the latest firmware for the unit and also the program for you Jeep Renegade. Also the factory radio gave me some problems with noise. I had to turn the bass and treble down on the radio and increase the gains on the DSR1 to compensate. It all worked fairly well in the end. Also make sure the get the proper wiring harness for you Jeep Renegade.

Have 2014 Taurus SHO with sony premium sound. Can this be used with the factory sony amp until i can buy a replacement aftermarket or do i have to have a aftermarket amp for it to work correctly?

That interface allows for the replacement of an OEM amplifier in select vehicles without losing OEM features. It is not designed to work with a OEM amplifier. You should get in touch with one of our advisors for more personalized help!

I have a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. Iâ??m trying to keep the integrity inside without modifying much. 2 questions... I have the 19 speaker HK with factory amp can I install this DSR1 and re rout back to factory amp? Second question is do I even need a amp for the DSR1 to work?
[ David  Oct 15, 2019 ]
1 answer
The DSR-1 is a good fit for that Jeep but the RCA outputs are intended to interface with an aftermarket amp. It would be difficult to use it with the factory HK amp since it doesn't use RCA inputs. If you want us to put together a system with an aftermarket amp and speakers you can contact one of our friendly product advisors here:

I'm not sure. I downloaded Rockford Fosgate PerfectTune from the Apple App store on to my phone to do the tuning
[ DeQuarry  Oct 15, 2019 ]
Not sure. Sorry. I tuned my stereo system through the amp. I just setup the DSR1 through the PC. I called Rockford customer support to make sure I was doing it correctly.
[ Christian  Jul 30, 2019 ]
Hello, I'm not sure if you will be able to use a pc for tuning. I hand found that the best method of tuning can be achieved by listening to music and adjusting the sound while seated in the vehicle.
[ Rodrica  Jul 30, 2019 ]
I have never tried to tuning from a PC, I dont believe the DSR1 has a USB port. I believe the only way to tune is from your phone or from a tablet via bluetooth.
[ JASON  Jul 30, 2019 ]
I have a 2016 Ford Explorer Sport and based upon my research, it looks like it doesn't have an amp (only the Platinum model does). Will this amp work with my Sony audio in my Sport? I also plan to change the speakers in all 4 doors.

It sounds like you are saying that your 2016 Explorer has the factory Sony sound system in it. If that is correct, then this Rockford Fosgate DSR1 digital signal processor can work with the stock radio once you get the vehicle specific wiring interface for it. Here it is: This setup allows you to add any amp with RCA audio inputs to the system. Feel free to contact an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for personalized help on building a system and getting the right amp to use with this process. My Bio:

Do the timing adjustment come through in real time? Or do you have to save and upload the settings before hearing the difference?
[ WarzHen  Jul 30, 2018 ]

I'm afraid Rockford does not specify whether the Time Alignment adjustments are made in real time; or if you have to save them in the PerfectTune app first. For more details on that you may want to check with Rockford Fosgate directly--you can find their support website here: Please feel free to contact a Crutchfield Advisor by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat if you'd like to discuss further.

I have a 18 ram 1500 with the 8.4 inch touchscreen. I was considering going with a audiocontrol D-6.1200. I talked to an installer and they recommend the DSR-1. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of each?

I have a 2013 Ford edge sport and I was originally going to use an LC7I also by audio control. both my installers to Best Buy and Crutchfield salesman recommend using the Rockford Fosgate DSR-1. I am running a kicker CompRT Radiant 12 along With a five channel pioneer 9605 amp. Some of the advantages I know what it was that I was able to replace the factory amplifier in and use the DSR one to keep all of my features such as navigation steering wheel controls and Bluetooth capabilities. In addition with Van Ness is that you're able to tune your audio system with the DSR-1's Cell phone app. Some of the disadvantages that I have noted was that initially I did not have any issues with the system until I try to use my vehicles factory navigational System and I was unable to hear any voice commands. This is been a common occurrence and each time that I have taken it back to the installer which is four times , The installers have re-flashed with the DSR-1 and the issue keeps occurring. I've also had issues concerning the deer DS or one not turning off when the vehicle is off and this is killed my vehicles battery on four separate occasions. The last time that I had the DSR-1 flashed I did not download the app for the Bluetooth connectivity although this seem to work best in my system I now have lost the ability to actively control the sub, so I had the DSR-1 re-flashed, but I did not download the app for the Bluetooth connectivity although this seem to work best in my system I now have lost the ability to actively control the sub, so I will have to Install the base knob that came with my pioneer amplifier. One good thing is that when I spoke with a Crutchfield sales reps they will be replacing the DSR-1 free of charge, possibly because it is a defective item. I don't know if any other people have these similar issues but for me this piece of equipment has been a huge pain and I wish I could have used the LC7I,
[ Rodrica  Jun 27, 2018 ]
Not sure how it will work with you set up. I am using the DSR1 in my motorcycle. But I can say if you are some what knowledgeable with audio and how to tune you set up. The DSR_1 is very user friendly and you can break down your whole by each speaker. there are a few helpful links out there but not many. American hard bag has some good info.
[ Kerri  Jun 22, 2018 ]
Advantages I would say the size and install. You can put it anywhere. Disadvantage would be the chimes and sounds from your dash or door being open and startup change. Not in a bad way just different. And may only come from the from driver speaker. The DSR1 has lots of toning with the app via Bluetooth is really cool. Seeing the changes you make in real time is great plus toning by ear is easier with the visuals
[ Jonathan  Jun 22, 2018 ]
The DsR1 is super customizable. Extemely easy as well. I would definitely recommend that over the audiocontrol. However, i would actually get the alpine pxe-0850s over both of them. It just came out. But it will be the new king.

I bought the Dsr1 and I have some questions before install it. My 5 channel amp just have 1 rca input for subwoofer and the Dsr1 has 2 sub outputs. I dont know if I just connect one of them to the amp or use a Y cable to connect both outputs to the amp. Other question: the Dsr1 will be installed after a fuse block, what number of fuse should I use to protect it? Thanks.
[ Marcelo  May 02, 2018 ]

Use a y connector and you will be fine, the fuse should be rated for the same value as the amp, the DSR1 has no direct power supply
[ Brian  May 14, 2018 ]
I would use the Y cable. I'm not sure if it sends a mono sub out or if thats a option. For the fuse I'm not sure I have a metro wiring harness on my set up.

Most sub amps are mono so I suppose 1 will do. Also I used a 5 amp on my dsr1 All of the power leads have a separate fuse on mine I know its overkill but I wanted to make sure i protected my investment. Also the app is pretty good I haven't had any issues so far and I have had it almost 10 months.. Good luck with your install

First you only need to connect one of the rcas to the amp. Just set the sub output to mono, and leave the other disconnected. Second you can use a 10 or 15 amp fuse.

Is the Bluetooth signal strong enough to install the unit behind the dash and still be able to reliably connect & tune? I want to put the DSR1 in a space above the CD player / audio control module in my fusion (with base stereo) which is behind the climate / radio control faceplate.

I installed a dsr1 under the passenger seat and the bluetooth connects outside the car on the drivers side so you shouldn't have a problem putting it in the dash
[ Joseph  Apr 20, 2018 ]
Yeah that shouldn't be much of a concern Russell. As long as your phone is in proximity to the DSR1, the Bluetooth signal would be strong enough to go through the dash. Any more reviews? Thinking getting this DSR1 to go active and make a 3 way front stage in my F150. I downloaded the app and set up the crossovers and all that and it seem fairly easy. Just wOndering how it actually works for people. A lot cheaper than other options and it has Bluetooth so it's appealing to me. A lot of mixed reviews on the product. Not looking for the idatalink harness or anything down that path just using it for the DSP software. Thanks

Honestly I just got this piece because it was the only piece available that replaced my factory which blew out!! Works fine the radio comes in staticky but Bluetooth and AUX work just fine!! I have a 2 1000 Phoenix gold amps running to it one for the highs and the other for the amps!! With your setup I'm sire it'll work, but you do need the harness piece to setup to your aftermarket stereo!

Tyler, I have had the DSR 1 installed for about 3 weeks in my 2013 Ford Edge Sport along with. Pioneer 9605 amp and 1 (12) inch Kicker radiant subwoofer and 4 Infinity6x8s and it is amazing. I was skeptical at first but after playing with the app and tuning my system, I would highly recommend using this device. The software is very straight forward and you can use the tutorials on the app if you need clarification on any questions you may have. I don't know if the people having issues did self installs, but I purchased this item on the recommendation of my Best Buy tech, who also did my install. I would highly recommend using this device.

I like the ability to customize everything from my phone. However, I'm not sure you can use it without the maestro idatalink. I'm using it to bypass my factory amp on 2017 Ford Focus ST. No issues thus far

WOrks great! Totally worth the money.

As a DSP, it has worked great for me. The app is easy to use and it seems to do a great job of summing the signal and spitting out a clean flat signal. I've just had problems with the idatalink in my Dodge truck. Some things are just way too loud like text message notifications and back up camera. But as a DSp, I'm really happy with the sound.

It's great as a processor but the first one I got mine of the out puts worked and crutchfield had to send me another one nothing on crutchfields part manufacturer's defect. But man it took my sound system in my truck to a whole nother level and I absolutely love it.

Will this work with 2018 Tundra non JBL stereo?

I totally used this full aftermarket hookups in my 18 tundra non jbl. But every stereo component has been replaced. Nothing factory and quite a few welcomed adds. The DSR1 is not a plug n play device like most stereo equipment. Much more advanced & once installed its controlled completely via an app

The primary purpose of the DSR1 is to add an aftermarket amplifier to power all of the speakers & sub(s). You'll also need the compatible iDatalink HRN-AR-CH2 harness for connection to the factory wiring in your Charger: For additional assistance and personalized recommendations, feel free to contact us directly by phone or through our online chat service:
