About the Rockford Fosgate PM100X1

Magic power pack

Rockford Fosgate's gamechanging PM100X1 package contains two seriously small, full-range mono amps, each one delivering 60 watts RMS to a speaker — that's more than twice the power of a typical factory radio or aftermarket receiver. Employing their patent-pending "FreeLoad" technology, each PM100X1 uses a receiver's output as its power source, so it doesn't need a power wire running to the battery (although you will have to run a ground wire).

New design

This revolutionary amp stores voltage from the receiver's output in a large power supply reservoir for boosting its output, allowing Rockford Fosgate to pack all that power in such a small chassis. Instead of having to find a spot for a larger 2-channel amp, you can mount these tiny amps just about anywhere you want, even behind the speakers.

Control

Each amp comes ready to work with almost any radio or receiver — no complicated gain control adjustments are necessary. A selectable high-pass filter lets you tune the sound to fit your speakers. You'll also find an input impedance switch, which you can use to match the amp's input to the output of a receiver capable of driving 2-ohm loads.

Powersport and marine ready

A rubber switch cover prevents dirt and water from getting inside and doing any damage. With the cover in place, the amp carries an IPX6 water intrusion rating, which means it'll tolerate getting sprayed but not submerged. The amp's compact size (4" x 3") makes it perfect for powersports vehicles and boats, where space is precious.

Nice little amp

Crutchfield customer from Lyons, IL on 6/11/2019

Work great and easy to install. Just be sure you set them to the proper ohms. I had put the first one in my door and tried it before putting the panel back on and it worked fine so I figured it was set to the proper setting. I then went across to the other door and set the other one the same and lost all sound. I thought maybe i blew a fuse so checked all fuses and they were fine. I then thought the only thing changed was theses amps and speakers so i flipped the ohms switch and then had sound I had to go back to set the first one so they matched . But they sound great They are a nice upgrade for a stock stereo.

Pros: ease of install

Cons: finding a spot to anchor them

Louder Now

I had upgraded my 4Runner speakers but I wasn't getting enough volume. I also didn't want to splice any wires in case I want to go back to factory. I added 4 of these and that did the trick though it wasn't as easy as it sounds. I installed 2 above each of the back door speakers. I used the little wire dongles that came with the Focal's to plug straight into the factory wiring at each of these doors. They sounded great. For the fronts I had to get creative because since the 4Runner fronts are wired in parallel so the doors was a no go. I guess you could install them there it's just that your tweeters wouldn't get anything from the amps unless you ran new speaker wire. Soooo I had to buy a regular and a reverse harness. Remember no cutting of wires. The amps were just small enough to go under my console. I soldered everything and checked everything for continuity. You could use butt joints too if you wanted. Turned everything on and nothing, it wasn't working. Finally figured out my grounding was no good. Fixed that. Now I'm happy. Very coherent sound and If I wanted I could put everything back to factory setup in an hour if I wanted. Very cool product. Overall easy to install. Now I need a sub.

Pros: Nice jump in volume

Cons:

Awesome. Great Technology. Great way to add power to a Bose system

Did not think this was possible. Thanks you Rockford Fosgate! Great technology, great way to add power to a Bose system. No major surgery required. Great sound. Used the Rockford Fosgate amps to power the door speakers in my 2016 ND MX5 with the Bose system. The stock Bose system puts out about 20-25 watts into 2 ohms. This Rockford Fosgate amp can put out up to 100 watts into 2 ohms. Build sheet for amp said 117 watts into 2 ohms and 74 amps into 4 ohms. Do not need to wire in a separate power line. Advanced designed amp (tiny, size of pack of cigarettes) uses the ac current which powers the speaker movement to power the amp. It has a set of capacitors to keep the current high for musical peaks. Has cut frequency cut offs 60, 80, 100 hz. I used 80 because that is what the Bose amp sends to the door speakers. The sound is loud and transparent. It makes my PPI (ADS) speakers sing. Besides replacing the stock Bose speakers, these RF amps are the next best improvement to any stock speaker system. Too bad they haven't designed one of these amps for subwoofers..... yet.

Pros: Did not think it was possible. Small, compact there is limited power 100 watts 2 ohms, 60 watts 4 ohms. Transparent sound, great design.

Cons: Expensive, but worth it.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate PM100X1K contains two separate PM100X1 full-range mono amplifiers, one for the left channel, and one for the right channel. These Punch Marine amps feature conformal-coated PCBs (printed circuit boards) and Element-Ready design that makes them perfect for mobile, motorsport, and marine applications. Rockford Fosgate's patent-pending BTL Powered "FreeLoad" technology powers the amplifier without requiring a standard B+/Ground power connection. These tiny amplifiers only require a 4" x 3" footprint.

BTL Powered FreeLoad Technology: The PM100X1 does not require a power wire from the battery to power the amplifier. Audio signals contain an AC signal, and a DC offset voltage that the amplifier can use to store in its internal capacitors to produce higher output power when needed. This technology works with 2-ohm radios found in many premium systems, as well as typical 4-ohm radios. A 2-ohm/4-ohm input switch is provided on the amp to match to the output impedance of the connected radio. The amp uses the input signal to automatically turn the amp on and off.

Note: A power wire is supplied in case the output of the radio is not high enough to sufficiently power the amp.

Element Ready: This Rockford Fosgate Element Ready amplifier is designed to stand up to harsh environmental conditions, with protections against dust, UV rays, corrosion, and moisture. The amp features an extruded aluminum heat sink, stainless steel hardware, sealed motor structures, and UV inhibitors, to keep the amplifier performing day in and day out. The single-sided wiring port is sealed to protect it from water intrusion, and carries an IPX6 rating. The amp can be installed on motorcycles, ATVs, and boats without worry of failure due to exposure to the elements.

Power Output: The PM100X1 amplifier has a rated power output of 60 watts x 1 at 4 ohms (CEA-2006). The dynamic power ratings are 61 watts x 1 at 4 ohms, and 109 watts x 1 at 2 ohms.

Selectable Crossover: A selectable Butterworth high-pass crossover is provided to tailor the output to the size of the connected speaker. You can set the crossover frequency to 60Hz, 80Hz, or 100Hz via the 3-way switch on the side of the amp. The crossover has a slope of 12 dB/octave.

Protection Circuits: The PM100X1 amp has protection circuitry that will shut off the amplifier in case of short circuit, over-voltage, or excessive heat.

Specifications:

  • Frequency Response: 60Hz to 20kHz (+/- 1.0dB)
  • Total Harmonic Distortion (THD+N): <1.0% at 4 ohms or 2 ohms

Q
Can the high pass crossover be defeated?
[ a  Feb 23, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
No. The energy from the lower frequencies is what powers the amplifier. If you were to defeat it, there would be no amplification.
[ KEVIN  Feb 24, 2019 ]
Q
Will these ones work on my ford f-150 with sony audio??
[ Milio  Oct 04, 2018 ]
1 answer
A
Potentially, yes. You'll want some aftermarket speakers that are capable of handling the additional wattage but you should be able to provide audio into the PM100X1 from your stock system. Q
What is the maximum input wattage these units can handle?
[ don  Feb 20, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
Sorry for the delayed response. There is no "maximum input wattage" rating. If the stereo's output somehow exceeds 60 watts RMS at 4 Ohms, the PM100x1 would be redundant so, they will work for any wattage output you may want to use them with. I hope that helps.
