Better sound for outdoor fun

If you're serious about building a better marine/powersports audio system, you need top-quality speakers. Rockford Fosgate's RM0652 marine speakers are built to sound great in the outdoors, with True Marine Grade components and the performance you need to get the sound you want on your boat, ATV, or golf cart.

Available in black or white, these marine speakers feature rugged grilles that look great and stand up to blistering sunlight and damaging moisture. Underneath, you'll find a UV-treated polypropylene cone, durable Santoprene rubber surround, and an Aramid fiber spider. A 1/2" dome tweeter built into the grille handles the high frequencies.

The suspension is designed to stand up to life in the great outdoors, so your RM0652 speakers will sound great for seasons to come.

Note: Rockford Fosgate describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake, we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

Sounds great! Installed into a very large fiberglass cabinet in our boat... lots of open space behind the speaker really enhances the sound.

Sounds good. Poor quality hardware

Overall I am satisfied with the product. There was however one problem. The mounting screws have 3mm allen heads (aka internal hex), intsead of the typical phillips head. The package includes a 3mm tool for the screws, but both the heads of the screws and the tool are made of inferior soft metal. As I began mounting the speakers and driving in the screws, the first one made it about 90% of the way and the tool began to spin. The 3mm allen head of the screw, as well as the tool were both rounded, despite the fact that I was not using excessive force. I tried the second one, thinking perhaps the first screw was defective, but I had the same result. I decided I better remove them and buy some proper screws with phillips heads, so I tried to get the two screws out. It was with great effort, and the use of a one eighth inch allen tool (slightly larger than 3mm), and small arc-joint pliers (better known by the trade-marked name Channel lock) that I was able to extract the defective hardware. With the correct hardware, I completed the job easily.

I bought these speakers to replace a similar "marine" product. They sound way better than the original 6 1/2" 2 way units that lasted 15 years. These speakers are mounted flush in a fiberglass center console, with sealed poly fiber filled boxes behind them. I imagine they wouldn't sound as good if they were just mounted in holes drilled in the fiberglass. The instructions are lacking detail in the wiring department (who wrote them??). The + and - terminals aren't marked on the housings, and the terminal illustration detail on the installation guide is not clear (they need to add a picture of that). Of course the terminals were different going from the "old style" 1/4" terminal (I had to replace them) to the newer, smaller mixed size. The thinnest terminal being the + side.

Pros: They Sound good!

Cons: Unclear terminal wiring detail. No + or - marked on speaker.

Outstanding all around sound

Powering 4 of these with a Fosgate PMX-5 head unit on my 2005 19' Starcraft 1900. I have 2 placed in the bow, and 2 in the seating area towards the stern. I have them x-over at 60Hz so they will give enough low end without the need for a subwoofer. The speakers are clear, and can be driven pretty hard before they start falling apart from being powered with only 50rms per speaker. Had them running for roughly 4hours straight the first day, and I do not have a regret. They sound amazing! The only reason I gave these a 4 was due to a missing speaker hole pattern, lousy clips not made for thicker fiberglass walls, and cheap drill bit head that rounded the heads of the screws out. If you are going to provide hardware, go the extra mile and make it good. I pay the couple pennies it costs to do this....... I know what parts cost in manufacturing, especially bit heads and screws.

Pros: Great sound, great build quality

Cons: Lack luster mounting hardware, no mounting patterns (though it did include dimensions...at least ;) )

Features

Marine Tested: Rockford Fosgate uses industry standard tests (ASTM B117 salt/fog and ASTM D4329 sunlight, moisture, and heat) to ensure the RM0652 speakers will provide optimum performance in the difficult marine environment.

Woofers: The woofer cones are injection molded, mineral filled polypropylene with UV inhibitors. This molding process assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. It is also light weight and rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Tweeters: The 1/2" dome tweeters are made of LCP (liquid crystal polymer), a high strength/light weight material. The tweeters are bridge mounted, useful in a marine speaker because no opening through the middle of the woofer for the mounting post is needed.

ICC Crossover: The ICC (Integrated Concealed Crossover) simplifies installation and protects the crossover by concealing it inside the basket, creating a cleaner look and easier installation. The crossover is 6 dB/octave high pass.

Infinite-Baffle Operation: The speakers are designed for infinite-baffle operation and can be installed in a variety of locations, without the need for a dedicated enclosure.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

Klippel Verified: The Klippel distortion analyzer, a device that uses a laser and sophisticated software to do large-scale analysis of drivers in motion, lets Rockford Fosgate optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

Stainless Steel: The mounting hardware is stainless steel to resist corrosion.

Q
Will a 22w rms per channel head unit power these speakers or should I look for somthing with closer rms to my head unit?
[ Shane  Mar 01, 2016 ]
1 answer
A
Rockford Fosgate's RM0652 marine speakers are efficient enough to work well with your head unit's built-in amplifier. However, they would ultimately sound their best when powered by an aftermarket amp that produces roughly 40-60 watts RMS per channel. I hope that helps. Q
Are these really 6-3/4" speakers? Because the Rockford Fosgate website has them labeled as 6-1/2", just wondering because these would be too big.
[ Thomas  Sep 16, 2017 ]

A
I didn't measure them, but I needed to replace a pair of 6 1/2 speakers on my toy hauler. They fit the existing holes perfidy, but the mounting holes did not line up w/ the holes that were there from the speakers before. The mounting ring was slightly smaller. Other than that they fit perfectly.
