Excellent for media, and good for calling.

Crutchfield customer from Murfreesboro, TN on 7/15/2019

2006 Toyota 4Runner

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

A good way to add bluetooth media and calling to a factory Toyota head unit. Streaming is excellent, and calls are good. I like that the song information text is displayed on my radio. The "good" about calling is that it automatically switches to the bluetooth input for incoming or outgoing calls, and that the incoming phone number is displayed and announced. Also, the call quality if pretty good. I can answer and end calls with steering wheel controls. The "bad" about calling is that I have to increase the volume from about 12 for radio to 30 to hear calls well. Once that is done, the call works as desired. After a call is ended, it does not automatically switch back to the radio so I have time to decrease the volume from 30 to 12 before switching the input. Steering wheel controls can adjust the volume, and switch the input. Only phone numbers are displayed; it cannot see your phone's contact list.

Pros: Audion streaming is great. The unit automatically switches to the bluetooth input for incoming or outgoing calls. Call quality if pretty good. Calls can be answered and ended with steering wheel controls.

Cons: Call volume is initially low, but volume can be increased to hear calls well. Then, you must decrease the volume before moving back to radio listening. Only phone numbers are displayed as text; it cannot see your phone's contact list.

Bluetooth USA SPEC

My brother installed the item in about an hour without help. He does have electronics background. When entering the car it immediately connects and plays the playlist and I love it . The sound quality is not as perfect as a CD but still better then any tape cord/ radio transmitters. We connected the item to the CD button. Only issue if somebody is already connected and gets out of the car, then it's difficult to connect. It may be I don't fully understand how everything works. All in all I do recommend this item for an older car!!!!

Pros: Sounds pretty good

Cons: Can be difficult if more than one person uses the item

Easy install on my wife's GX470. Allows her to stream music through stock Nav radio. Bluetooth phone is very clear with included microphone. With the BTOYR cord we retained use of steering wheel controls. Most importantly, all of the stock functions work - cd changer, rear seat entertainment DVD, etc. Highly recommend.

Just a great solution for adding Bluetooth audio to your older vehicles. This is my 2nd model (Acura RDX version) and it's as simple and quick to install as before on our 2001 Lexus RX300. The unit is a solid build but not heavy or bulky. The provided cables are well crafted and sturdy with adequate length for various chassis placement. The DIP setting and plug ports are well marked. The microphone for hands-free speaking has foam cap filter, a large optional clip, and very long cable so to place in anywhere, in any size vehicle. The manual does a pretty good job of stepping you through the installation, and Crutchfield provides excellent instructions on accessing the stereo for your particular model car. Then, of course, there is the performance. Again, very easy. My daughter went through her iPhone's Bluetooth setting and selected the BTN45-TOY option. We turned on the stereo, clicked our designated option (via CD alternate), and music played instantly, loud & clear. We next tested her receiving and making hands-free calls with no problems...clear audio both hearing and speaking via the provided microphone.

Pros: Absolute perfect Bluetooth solution for older vehicles that do not or cannot have modern stereo receivers. Solid build, easy install and operation.

2003 Toyota RAV4

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This is day three after install and I'll give it four stars for starters. Long-term reviews, IMHO are much better to tell of the performance and longevity of the item, whereas most write a review within the first few days and exclaim "I love it!" This unit replaces a USA SPEC iPod interface that I bought and installed for this truck probably ten or so years ago which worked without issues up until we didn't have a phone that used the old 30-pin connector. Install took me about two hours or so - had to remove the above-mentioned interface; figure where to put the microphone and how to route it; determine the best place to install this interface; and test it before buttoning everything back up. Crutchfield's instructions were clear for radio removal as well as USA's on how to directly connect the interface into the radio. Once installed and powered up it took my phone about 30-40 seconds for it to recognize it through Bluetooth (at first I didn't think it was going to work). As this was a surprise for my wife (who wanted it because of the upcoming hand's free law that will come into effect soon), the next morning we tested out the play mode to phone function and after monkeying with the phone to get it to use Bluetooth rather than it's own speaker it worked pretty well. In the end she's very happy with it and uses it every time to listen to her music from her phone.

Pros: Compact. Easy to install - plug and play. Instructions fairly clear. USB port to plug in and charge.

Cons: Install the microphone plug-in in the back next to the radio plug in?? Or use an angle plug to take up less room. Microphone cord longer than necessary??

BT45-TOY...I like it!!!

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I really like this unit and am impressed with USA Spec customer service and Crutchfield Sales and customer service. I am a little surprised that USA Spec will not support anything sold on Amazon, only from Crutchfield. The installation videos I found online on YouTube made the entire install nearly painless. I own a 2006 Lexus ES330 with Factory Navigation CD/DVD without Mark Levinson in the dash and (Multi disc changer in the console) . I was unsure about which switch settings to configure my system on so I called USA Spec. They assured me the best thing to do is to set all the switches down for the CDC1 emulation. He recommended leaving the existing cable removed from the back of the Nav unit 12 pin connector unplugged. I did not plug it back into the provided cable. This left my multi disc changer powered off and disconnected from the system. The tech support guy said they have had some issues with people leaving it connected. I Velcro-ed my BT45 under the console cover on top of the A/C duct on the left side (ac) and stuck my BT45-TOY on top and at a angle. Powered up and saw a new Bluetooth system BT45 available and connected by phone to it. I selected Disc 4 on my Nav unit and started streaming music !!! I'm in the process of adding a auxiliary connector to my dash from the BT45.

Pros: solid bluetooth streaming, great audio

Cons: none that I can find.

Purchased the unit for my Lexus in 2017. First unit failed August, 2018. USA Spec sent a second unit and it's dead by April, 2019. It's cost me $100 each time to have a unit installed. USA Spec won't refund my purchase cost only wants me to return the unit and they'll fix it. That's another $200 plus shipping.

Pros: Work for 6 months...maybe

Cons: They're defective. I now have no am no fm and no bluetooth.

Exactly what I was looking for. Kept my truck looking factory. The two minor issue I have weren't enough to make me give it a 4 star.I like the fact that it automatically connects to my phone. But sometimes when I get out of the truck and walk away the music will start playing from my phone .But that's not the units fault I think it's the iPhone. Seems only to happen with pandora so far. Otherwise I'm thrilled. Very easy to install. I'll be ordering another one for my other Toyota soon!!!!

I replaced a different product with this and this one works perfectly on the 2007 Toyota Avalon with JBL and Navigation. Since I had previously installed a different device I knew exactly how to remove the radio and where to run the wires. Selecting where to install the device is the hardest part and I recommend having this figured out before you start. There is a bundle of harnesses behind the radio and I had to try a few options before finding the right one.

Pros: Easy to install Volume same as radio Phone calls are clear

Cons: Deciding where to run wires is hardest part of install

Unexpected Decision

1998 Toyota 4Runner

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Just installed this unit in my '98 4Runner SR5 with OEM stereo system with CD. Easy install. Gave me a chance to clean our area of 20yrs of dust and grime. On the back of my radio there was only one place to insert the new cable. And spot was taken by my OEM CD player. So I had to make a choice. Either keep it as is and put it back together, or, hook up the new device and forego the CD player. Most would have had an easier choice but I still use my CD player every day, so, it was a tough call at first. The device works great, I hid it well and it pairs fast. The volume is the same as if I was playing one of my CD's. Perfect. The mic for the phone works and is clear on other end. So far so good, but now I just need to see if I can find a piggyback harness to have them both working.

Pros: Easy install.

Cons: No explanation of why you have to choose between current CD player or new device. Crutchfields does not have any such harness to connect the two at the same time. So I had to delete the CD player. They should have a harness, or at least mention this in description. . A lot of vehicles were sold with a CD player so a harness so both could be available would be great.

Basically Works on a SCION TC 2008, Radio T1809

Josh from Seattle, WA on 9/5/2018

2008 Scion tC

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I have a Scion TC 2008 with Premium Radio (Pioneer T1809). This unit does work functionally with the HUD. I'm happy with streaming audio sound and volume. Pairing was easy on my iPhone 6s, and the phone links up to the stereo automatically when I turn on the HUD unit. Audio has never dropped, bluetooth has NOT disconnected on me. My steering wheel controls work as advertised for both skipping and answering calls in CDC0 mode. CDC0 does disable my internal CD player (I don't care). I could try CDC1 when then I'd likely have to press "Disc Mode" on my HUD twice to cycle to the second CD port...I don't want to do that. So I'm fine with pressing CD ounce...and the phone works! Just be aware than it DOES disable your internal CD port if you are in CDC0 mode (at least). Call volume is very low, I need to be at volume level 41 to comfortably hear the other party...many times higher. I use the streaming audio around 25-37 depending on city/highway driving noise. Radio only goes to 55 or 60 I think...so there's not much room left! I used MUTE after a call to ensure I don't get blasted and just turn down the volume manually with the knob. I've not had many calls...and don't really care about it...I bought it for streaming Pandora and getting a new charging port setup on my factory HUD. Anything else was a bonus. I'm a little miffed the the CD-Text support doesn't work on my HUD. I have CD-Text...but the unit doesn't output anything and I see CD Track4

Pros: Great sound on Bluetooth streaming Audio! Easy setup with included TOYOTA adapter cable. 2.1A charging port works on iPhones with Lightning port and also works with 30-pin to lightning adapter from USB (but charges slower). Unit auto-links quickly and consistently! I've NOT experienced ANY drop-outs, or audio issues listening to music.

Cons: Call volume is very low (but most add-ons have this problem). My HUD has CD-Text support, but nothing shows on my HUD. So all I see is "CD Track4" all the time. CDC0 config replaces built-in CD player in my HUD (Disables it). CDC1 MIGHT bring it back...but I don't want to press "CD MODE" twice every time on my HUD to go to Bluetooth audio (since it's my primary audio source). Cables are actually overly long. No easy attachment surface to mount or zip-tie unit to car.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

By far the easiest aftermarket install of a vehicle component I've ever done. Completely plug and play. I added this to my wife's 2009 Toyota Sienna XLE with Navigation and Rear Entertainment. You WILL need the BT-TOYR (separate purchase) cable in order for your Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) to function properly. Our van has the "AM-SAT" button but no satellite functionality in the van (and the SAT never worked prior to this install: only AM). I configured the BT45 for SAT using the DIP switches. Since we use CD and DVD but never SAT this was a perfect fit. Unit auto connects to the wife's phone on SAT, plays automatically, and displays track info. All other radio functions work without issue including RSE and front video when in park with parking brake on. The steering wheel controls will automatically change tracks on her iPhone Spotify and DI.fm apps as if this was purposely made for her van. She couldn't be happier!

Pros: Easy to install, easy to setup, pairs and plays automatically with iPhone 8

Cons: Had to purchase a separate cable as the included cable does not work with 2009 Sienna with nav and RSE.

This is 9ne of my best purchases ever. Works better than I thought provid8ng blue tooth pho e support as 8 needed but also handling my navigation and Pandora music very nicely. Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I have done a lot of auto stereo installs over the years and that was by far the easiest! I had to read the instructions a couple of times to really understand them. We had to try two different DIP switch settings (wow, I haven't seen DIP switches since the late eighties!) to get it to work for us. We used the all ON setting. Connection to the iPhone was seamless and music information (tracks) displayed nicely on the monitor. My only 'Cons' are: 1. The microphone clip could be more "alligator-like". It's a fixed size "C-clip" and it was too small to clip on the sun visor so we ended up sticking it with velcro to the grab bar. 2. The unit itself looks like a "black box" out of the eighties. It doesn't look very appealing stuck the side of the trans tunnel. It was my son's car and he wasn't as concerned with the looks; had it been my car, I probably would have done some sort of custom cutout. I gave it 5 stars because what was good about it was really good and was was no so good, was not a big deal.

Pros: Quick, easy installation and synchronization

Cons: Microphone clip and unit appearance

Fantastic Bluetooth Adapter

The Critical Consumer from Marietta, GA on 6/21/2018

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Fantastic bluetooth adapter! Installation was quick and easy in my 2008 4Runner Limited with JBL audio--Crutchfield's instructions were spot on! It pairs quickly when turning the car on and it automatically starts playing music from the last used app, even if it's not open at the time. Only quirk is that the audio level for calls is a bit different from the audio for music, as other reviewers pointed out. I found the simplest fix is simply to not turn the music volume all the way up on my phone and turn the call volume to the max. This equalized the audio so switching from a call to music is seamless. It is also important to note the section in the manual about the dip switches and to try each combination to see which works best for your stereo. I found that one of the CD emulation modes was best since it shows the text from songs / calls. You'll also want to disable to voice for the system that loudly announces "Bluetooth Connected" or announces incoming calls in a very weird voice and only speaks the number--not the name. No complaints so far with the system and I am very happy that I was able to maintain steering wheel control and the stock head unit since it looks great!

Pros: - Easy Install - Seamless integration with stock system - Phenomenal sound quality (though I'm no audiophile...) - Great call quality - Quick, seamless device pairing

Cons: - Need to disable creepy voiceovers - Need to reduce music volume on phone to equalize with call audio

I hate it!! It doesn't work as I thought it would the steering wheel controls don't work there is no hands free in order to answer a call you have to answer it from the phone then put it on speaker phone then it will play through the car it also says that there is a 3.5mm cord it doesn't have that. I had it installed by a professional they were the ones that recommended the product because they put them in all the time and we lost our 5 disc CD player. So if I could have rated it less I would have I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone. I'm going to have it taken out waste of time and money.

Pros: None

Cons: Doesn't work as I was told it would before I bought it.

Installed in 2004 Lexus RX. It works well and as described. Installs into the existing connections on the radio. When I ordered the Bluetooth device, Crutchfield added the wiring harness to the order automatically. Not sure why, because it wasn't needed, and it caused confusion in the installation. Otherwise, easy to install.

Anyhow, get this and enjoy your own music.

We're sorry for the confusion over the additional harness for your application in your Highlander. Our Customer Service rep, Gregory, has issued a refund for the cable. Because of this customer's review, we had our Vehicle Integration Buyer, Darren, take a look into this installation. Installed in a 2004 Lexus GX470 with navigation and Mark Levinson sound. Easy install. Just make sure the DIP switches are set correctly. One of the switches got knocked into OFF position while I was reinstalling the stock head unit and I couldn't get song titles to display correctly. Once I fixed the DIP switch position, everything worked perfectly. Installed the mic near the rear view mirror and sound quality is great. My iPhone pairs right up and starts playing when the head unit is in DISC mode. It also switches automatically to DISC mode when a call comes in. Steering wheel controls work seamlessly. Feels very OEM. Love it. Made my 2004 car feel like a modern vehicle again. The "connected" notification can be turned off easily, just read the manual.

Pros: Works just like an OEM product

One note, the directions do not mention it with the factory stereo in our Prius, you use both harnesses supplied but only one plug connects to the stereo. This was perfect for me because all of the aftermarket receivers I looked into would not work with our factory steering wheel controls, which was a deal breaker for me. But using this adapter is great because we can connect our phones, the sound is great, AND we can skip and change volume from the steering wheel controls. I am very happy but my only gripe is that you can only connect one device at a time. Wish it would support pairing with 2 devices. Other than that, we love it and are so happy to be rid of the cheap cassette adapter!

Easy to install and easy to set-up. Had it in and working within 90 minutes. The most difficult part was running the Mic wire (this old body doesn't get under the dash very often...). The sound quality from my iPhone 8 Plus via Onkyo's HF Player App is good. I have one complaint. When the phone connects to this it blares "Bluetooth Connected" so loud it's gonna blow my speakers. I'm hoping there is a way to turn this off, but I haven't looked yet. Re-training myself to turn the volume way down or off before leaving the car is a long shot...

This is awesome, just saved me $80k. My only complaint about my 2002 Land Cruiser was that the nav system/audio system was so far behind the times, doesn't even have an AUX input jack much less bluetooth. Well what do you know this BT45-TOY module really does just plug in to the factory nav/audio system head unit and it really does work just as easily as the description says! Installing the unit was easy, the hardest part was finding a good place up under the dash to hide the unit. There is space on the drivers side above the dummy foot pedal and the cable reached there perfectly. I always assumed I was out of luck for bringing my old Land Cruiser up to the present tech, so glad I found this thing! Some reviewers have said the unit dies after a couple years, hopefully that doesn't happen but will deal with it then if it does.

A million stars to Buster who told me this product would be far superior than the iSimple ISTY751. Sound quality is amazing and my bluetooth range is phenomenal. With the iSimple ISTY751, I had my phone in my pocket as I squatted next to the wheelwell of my truck to detail the tire. The audio stream would cut out, which was unacceptable to me. So I had my installers pull the iSimple ISTY751 out and install the USA Spec BT45-TOY. Sound quality is far better and the range is superior.

Pros: Range Sound Quality Instructions If you use music player app called Power Amp, you will have to adjust the settings in the app for the track change to work with the controls of your factory radio. Took me a few seconds to figure it out.

Cons: None

The Bluetooth adapter worked exactly as advertised, my 2006 Toyota Avalon can now play audio and take calls from my phone. This brought my car's stereo into the present, and saved me the trouble of having to install an entire new head unit. The device seems to trick the stereo into thinking I have a second CD changer installed, you just have to make sure to press the CD button twice to get to Bluetooth when you want to use it. The box has dip switches that allow it to be configured for different car models, allowing it to appear to the car as a satellite radio, MP3 device, or a few other things. Depending on what you choose, that's the button you hit on the stereo to get Bluetooth audio working.

Pros: Simple to install

Cons: Bluetooth audio is a little lower than other audio sources, still clear but noticeably quieter than CD or radio

Installed the BT45-TOY in my 2006 Lexus ES330 with Nav. The installation was very easy thanks to the assistance of tech support. I had to disconnect the multi-disk CD changer and use the CD emulation mode to get the full functionality of the system. It works great, streams music wirelessly, announces incoming calls, lowers the volume automatically. The only issue is the volume of the BT45 is significantly less than my OEM stereo so I have to raise volume when I receive a call. It's a minor issue but it's the difference between 4 and 5 stars and that price point. Great product, I would highly recommend it for people looking to add B/T capability to their older model vehicles.

Pros: Easy install Works perfectly

Works great. Now have bluetooth in my 12 year old Avalon, plus I retained the CD changer and tape deck. Got Aux In capability as an added bonus. Plug & play installation, took less than an hour. The audio quality on Bluetooth is quite good, although the noise cancellation has difficulty with certain sounds (like large trucks driving by) that it can't tell are signal or noise so it lets that sound pass as signal. Otherwise I am very satisfied with it.

Pros: Fits, retains all existing radio functions (tape player, CD changer). Pairing is easy, operation is easy. Good audio clarity

Cons: Sometimes the noise cancellation on the bluetooth mic gets confused and passes along the noise.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I installed on a 2006 LC which was very easy. Microphone was placed above the map reading light console and unit now is housed in the old ashtray location above the gearshift. Only negative is that the phone is at a lower volume level than the music...I've tried other dip switch settings, and turning up all app volumes available on the iPhone 6plus with no improvement. So if you're listening to music at level 10 the phone requires level 24 which after you hang up has the music playing much too loud. Customer support is first rate and again install couldn't be any easier. The sound quality is premium and you can see display of the track and artist if you switch to the track info screen but it only displays for 15 seconds or so....not a big deal but worth noting. Sounds quality of the calls is good once you select the correct volume level. Still keep functionality of steering wheel controls for volume, call answer, and hang up.

Pros: Great Sound Quality for music Easy install Aux input for rear entertainment if you want to run it through the stereo

Cons: Phone volume is significantly lower than music volume....fix this and it's top rating all around....this is the only drawback but not a deal breaker.

Ben from Aspen, CO on 3/21/2017

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Serviceable product that functions as advertised with fairly simple install. I'm giving it three stars for two reasons: 1) the sound quality for streaming music via Bluetooth is not great, a step or two below FM radio. It's similar to the factory Bluetooth connection in my Jeep using the same phone, so I don't think it's a defect, I just think it's not a high quality connection; 2) The included installation manual (if one could call it that) is completely inadequate and Crutchfield did not provide any supplemental information for my vehicle, so it was a bit of a challenge to figure out the connections, especially since Crutchfield sold me an extra cable that I did not need (subsequently returned), so it took me some time to realize that I should just use the original cable supplied by the manufacturer.

Pros: Relatively simple install, plug and play

Cons: Substandard sound quality compared to other Bluetooth streaming receivers.

We have only had this equipment for a few days and have only used it a couple of time so this is an initial impression. The music quality via bluetooth is quite good. With Iphones, once it connect shortly after starting the car, it just jumps into your play lists and starts playing - effortlessly. So for connectivity and streaming I would say this is a five star product. Due to the fact that I put it in my daughter's college car, it is attached to a radio that is over 10 years old and although it had some text display capability (high end JBL System) it did not display any of the text display information. The incompatibility is clearly stated in product literature so I can't complain. I had just been optimistic that it might work. This is the only reason that I did not give it a 5 star rating so I am not really sure that is fair. As far as the phone is concerned, the call quality is better than either of our newer cars/systems. Great Microphone and Crutchfield's instructions are great as usual as far as getting the wire up the windshield pillar as well as other install instructions and tech support too. Siri handles the outgoing calls from the mic and home button. Incoming calls are displayed on the phone and/or announced through the speakers reading out the incoming number and answered or declined by hitting the track up (answer) track down (dumped to voicemail) which is great, simple and highly functional. I added a KUDA Phone mount and a charge cable. Gr

Both Bluetooth calling and audio for music works flawlessly in my Landcruiser and wife's Lexus. Both are 2007 vintage. I used SAT input on both vehicles. Great tips on installation can be found online.

Pros:

Cons: If there was a Con to mention it is slight volume difference between calls and music, need to spin knob or use steering controls when going back and forth.

2008 Lexus RX 400h - I used this to replace an old wired iPod/iPhone unit from another manufacturer that caused all kinds of "ghost" issues - display would blank, volume controls on factory head unit would not work. It was easier to install this unit than uninstall the old one. I would recommend that the manufacturer provide vehicle specific instructions as I had a little confusion with the plug - but I figured it out. I had some stereo noise inserted into the Bluetooth signal initially, but stopped and restarted the car and it eliminated that problem. Factory Phone Bluetooth interface still works and my wife is 100% satisfied. This might be a fallback solution for my 2002 Land Cruiser if my Bluetooth receiver/amp replacement does not work as planned.

Installed this unit in my 2005 Toyota Land Cruiser this past weekend and it works perfectly! It's an easy install after carefully removing two pieces of paneling and the factory radio/nav system. One thing to note is that upon checkout you will be prompted to also purchase an additional wiring harness (CAS-TLC), you do NOT need this. As I stated, I have a 2005 LC with factory radio with navigation and the six disc cd changer, which is located in the center console. I called Crutchfield technical support and as always they were very helpful and quickly figured out that this harness wasn't necessary and I connected the BT with the supplied harness.

Installed in my 2009 Toyota Tacoma this morning. Very easy install. I attached unit with Velcro on the bottom side of dash behind instrument cluster. I ran the microphone up the drivers side "A" pillar, up along headliner, and mounted microphone next to rear view mirror. Connected I Phone through blue-tooth with one click. Immediately music started playing. Very clear quality. Unit integrated perfectly with my existing radio. The name of the song shows up on radio display. I can change songs with the tune up or tune down knob. It even works with Siri to make hands free calls. I only gave it 4 stars because the price seems a little high for just giving you blue-tooth capabilities. If you already have a satellite radio unit connected then you will not be able to use this unit because it uses the SAT input on radio. Although you could get a satellite radio car kit and install it through the AUX input on the unit or radio. Overall works perfectly!!

Pros: Easy install and integrates blue-tooth seamlessly with factory radio.

Cons: High price and cannot be used in conjunction with satellite radio tuner.

Easy Bluetooth Addition To My Tacoma

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I own a 2012 Tacoma with the basic OEM head unit, face code D1822. I wanted to add wireless connectivity so I decided to search around for a Bluetooth solution and found the BT45-TOY. It sounded like the perfect fit as it was designed to interface directly with the OEM radio. Incredibly, I had the unit installed in less than 30 minutes. Following Crutchfield's excellent radio-removal instructions it was very easy to remove the factory radio. The BT45-TOY plugged directly into a connector on the back of the radio with the included cable harness. There was no need to splice into any existing wiring. The BT45-TOY is small and it fit quite nicely on top of the radio in a space below dashboard. The BT45-TOY comes with a microphone with a long cord and it has a convenience USB jack to use for charging phones. I purchased a separate USB extension cord so that I could mount the USB jack remotely from the BT45-TOY. The Tacoma has several punch-outs in the dashboard below the radio which were easily removed and allowed for the USB cord and microphone to exit. After re-installing the radio I powered it up and the BT45-TOY appeared in my iPhone's Bluetooth list. It connected easily and sounds great! I can change tracks using the radio controls and track information appears on the radio's display. I have only used the hand's free phone feature a couple of times but people say I sound very clear. After a month I'm still happy with the purchase.

Pros: Small size, easy installation, integrates with OEM radio

Cons: Using the radio controls to answer the phone is a little awkward.

I can't live without bluetooth. For almost a decade I have had bluetooth available in my lease cars. But my wife and I decided to buy used, so I bought a 2001 Lexus LS430 with all the bells and whistles, including a Mark Levinson stereo. But what good is a great stereo without an ability to play the music and books I carry with me? 6 CDs were a luxury in 2001, but these days that is the equivalent of living in a sod house--totally unacceptable. So rather than ditching the OEM audio, I decided to add bluetooth to the existing system. Was it a chore? Well, yes, it was. Easily within my abilities, which are very modest, but installation DOES require removing much of the center dashboard. A bit of prying, a few screws (some were in VERY tight), and a cable swap (don't forget the Lexus adapter as a modest separate purchase), and viola, you have audio streaming as part of your OEM stereo. I also ran a line out from the aux port on the BT45, so my wife can plug in HER iphone when she is with me, and I ran the included microphone up and around to attach right above my rear view mirror. (running the wire and hiding it reasonably well was a chore as well). So far, so good. It works just as well as advertised. The bluetooth connection is as reliable as bluetooth gets (which is hardly perfect, but that is bluetooth, not the BT-45). The sound is awesome (again, within the limits of the technology), and the microphone quality gets two thumbs up from my wife,

Pros: Works as advertised. Brings older Toyotas and Lexus vehicles into the 2010s. You get to keep the OEM stereo!! No idiotic flashing LEDs, blue glows from tech trying to look cool, or anything like that. Aux port for non-bluetooth connections

Cons: Intimidating install, but doable by almost anybody More expensive than aftermarket bluetooth stereo (but well worth it)

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I own a 2007 Toyota Avalon, and I've been trying to install some variation of 3rd party accessories so I can listen to my own music (i.e. Spotify) either directly or via Bluetooth. I spent about 5 weeks trying to get a replacement single DIN head unit and a new wiring harness to work, but to no avail. There were endless volume issues (i.e. oscillating up and down, no volume at all, random volume on/off etc.) and the only recourse was to bypass my stock amplifier, which would have been a royal pain. Not wanting to do that, I decided to take one more shot at getting Bluetooth up and running by just installing the USA Spec BT45-TOY. It said it worked for my car, the installation was supposed to be simple, and it would allow me to play my own music via my own device via Bluetooth - and it has been AMAZING. Amazing because it was simple to install. Amazing because there are zero volume issues. And amazing because it simply works - it connects when I get in the car, and works perfectly. I highly recommend going this route if you're just looking to connect your own device via Bluetooth in order to listen to your own music...don't worry about a new head unit and wiring harness, unless you really need one :)

Pros: * Super easy to install - disconnect a cable from your head unit, connect a cable from the BT45-TOY, and you're good to go. * Zero connectivity issues, easy to pair with your device. * Works flawlessly, connects automatically when you get in your car etc. * Price is perfect for the value. * Maintains all the steering wheel controls for volume etc.

Cons: * None! It's a great piece of technology.

Easy install - flawless. Works with the steering wheel and factory stereo buttons. A 2003 was not designed for bluetooth, so given that they did a good job. Comment son operation: If you are listening to the radio, the radio will switch to bluetooth on an incoming call. When the call is finished, the stereo stays on bluetooth rather than returning to the radio. Not a deal killer, but also not how I would expect it would operate. Also - I am used to having a button to activate the voice dialing. You can activate voice dialing using the microphone (OK google) but not by pressing and holding what would normally be the call answer button. Again, a small issue. Voice quality is great, and calls are actually loud enough to hear. Bluetooth streaming audio quality is fine. Not audiophile, not bad just fine.

Pros: Easy install, works well, bluetooth connection is solid. Auto switches to bluetooth on incoming call. Answer and end call buttons work well. Auto pause music when car shuts off, auto start music when you start the car.

Cons: No button in car to activate the voice dialing on the phone. Stereo does not return to what you were listening to when the call ends.

I recently bought this 05 GX470, It has a killer sound system in it and with the integration of the navigation and other systems in the truck I didn't want to replace anything, just wanted to add audio steaming bluetooth. After some internet searches and a lot of angst I decided on this unit. (Mainly because of Crutchfield being the seller, I knew they would stand behind it). Well the install could not have been easier. getting the radio out was the hardest part and that was a snap! This thing just plugs in and a couple of DIP switches and I now have steaming of my favorite media from my phone.

Pros: Super easy install, literally plug n play. If you have a GX470 don't let removing the dash intimidate you. Do an internet search on YouTube. Very Easy!

Cons: None yet.

So I also was someone uneasy when I first started looking at this product to install in my work vehicle. I have a one hour drive to and from work. I'm tired of having to answer the phone and put the caller on speakerphone because of cell phone laws here in California. I read the reviews here and was comfortable that Crutchfield would allow me to return it if it didn't meet my expectations. The install went smoothly however I would recommend that you search on youtube on your specific vehicle to see if someone has recorded the exact steps to take apart your dash. In this case a very similar product installer uploaded a video on how to do it step by step. That was very helpful as the instructions included don't show you what you need to do. In a Toyota Camry installation is not rocket science by any means but watching someone else do it takes any guessing out of the equation.

Pros: Low price, good integration into the factory system, and good performance of the microphone etc.

Cons: Limited instructions, the instructions need to be more clear on the specific models which need to have a plug removed from the back of the radio, plugged into the current harness and then the new harness plugged back into the radio. In my case I only needed to plug in the plug from the unit to the radio. I didn't have to unplug anything. I did unplug a similar connector but quickly realized it was not compatible. No a deal killer by any means but just be aware.

The product works great, the only confusion was with the instructions, my radio didn't have a factory plug that needed to be unplugged and plugged into the female receiver on the device. Would have been a 5 minute install if I didn't try to find a fit for that plug.

Pros: Works great, can be installed out of the way.

Cons: Instructions should account for vehicles without 12 pin plugs.

My Sienna XLE already had Bluetooth for the phone, but not music streaming. This added that perfectly to the factory stereo without loosing any of the other capabilities (CD/DVD, existing phone Bluetooth). Installation was extremely easy, taking about 30 minutes total, and most of that was figuring out where to store the unit and it's long cord so the radio unit had enough room to fit back properly. I didn't need to access it for the USB or AUX ports, I just wanted it out of the way. For my installation I set the dip switches to "MP3" and it acts just like a 2nd CD player. Works perfectly.

Pros: Excellent sound and great integration with the existing Toyota factory unit.

Cons: None so far

My car came with all options including Navigation, Call Pick-up and a Mark Levinson stereo with CD Changer. The only option available to connect to the music on my iPhone was through an earphone connection in the armrest to which the wired connections became brittle. I was looking for a way to wirelessly connect to my music library. I tried every FM module product out there but they all had inferior sound due to static. The Crutchfield Sales Rep was able to confirm that this OEM product will perform at meet my requirements. When it arrived, Crutchfield Technical Rep walked me through the entire process of dismantling my radio and center console so that I wouldn't have to guess. The entire process to connect took about 35 minutes and about another 10 minutes to put back together. This Bluetooth Adapter is so intuitive that it works with all of my steering wheel button functions and it retained all of my car's features such as showing the incoming call on the navigation screen. I highly recommend this product from Crutchfield if you're looking for a way to connect to your music library via Bluetooth. The Lexus Dealership offered to do this for over $900. I saved almost $800. I couldn't have done this without Crutchfield's product inventory an their amazing sales and technical staff. There is no other company out there like Crutchfield. (24-year customer)

Pros: Total factory look, functionality with zero splicing into any electronic wiring or disconnecting the power to the radio.

Cons: No directions on how to dismantle dash / console but they will walk you through the process over the phone.

Bluetooth Pairing: The USA Spec BT45-TOY can only be paired and connected to one Bluetooth device at a time. Its compatible with most Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices such as Apple iPod touch/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry, Windows phone, and more.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the USA Spec BT45-TOY.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication (HFP): The USA Spec BT45-TOY supports Bluetooth Profile HFP for hands-free communication from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, so you can take (answer/end) phone calls through your vehicle's factory radio.

  • Answering a Phone Call: When there is an incoming call, your factory stereo's music will be muted and an audible ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle speakers. You can even have the BT45-TOY announce the caller's phone number through your sound system; and for most text-capable radios if you miss the announcement, you can view the caller's phone number on your factory radio's display. To answer the call, simply press the Seek/Tune or CH+ button on your factory radio or steering wheel control. To end or reject a call, press the Seek/Tune or CH- button on your factory radio or steering wheel control.
  • Dialing a Phone Number: In order to dial a phone number, you will still need to use your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone; you cannot dial a number from the factory radio. Once you've dialed a number from your mobile phone, then the call will be automatically transferred to the BT45-TOY and your factory stereo system.
  • External Microphone: The USA Spec BT45-TOY includes an external microphone to carry on your side of the conversation, while the caller's voice will be heard through your vehicle's speakers. The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found in many factory or aftermarket head units. The microphone is fitted with a 16' cable terminated by a 3.5mm connector that connects to the BT45-TOY module; it measures 0.9375" (w) x 0.6875" (h) x 1.625" (d). The microphone has a self-adhesive backing to mount it to your vehicle's driver-side pillar, head-liner trim, or dash (do not mount it to the windshield.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming (A2DP/AVRCP): The BT45-TOY supports Bluetooth Profiles A2DP and AVRCP for wireless audio streaming from a Bluetooth-enabled device that can also be controlled from the buttons on your vehicle's factory radio or steering wheel; in some cases you can also view song/artist information on your factory radio's display.

  • Wireless Music Streaming: You can stream music stored on your Bluetooth enabled device or stream music apps (such as Pandora, SiriusXM Radio, iHeartRadio, etc.) that are playing on your Bluetooth device to your vehicle's sound system (all speakers will play).
  • Music Control: You can control Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track functions from your vehicle's factory radio or steering wheel controls (other control functions will have to be done from your Bluetooth enabled device). You can control the volume of the music being streamed via your factory radio and steering wheel controls, or the Bluetooth device.
  • Song/Artist Information: In many cases, you can view artist, album, and song title information on your factory radio's display. In order to view song/artist information on your factory radio's display, your factory radio and your Bluetooth-enabled device must meet the following requirements:
    • Your factory radio must have a "SAT" button or "Radio" & "CAT" buttons; a satellite radio does not need to be activated, nor does the satellite radio tuner need to be present.
    • If you are using a Bluetooth-enabled Apple iPod touch/iPhone/iPad, then it must be running iOS 6 or higher. If you are using a Bluetooth-enabled Android smartphone/tablet, then it must be running Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) or higher operating system.
    • Your device's Bluetooth AVRCP profiles must be 1.4 or higher.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to wireless Bluetooth connectivity, the USA Spec BT45-TOY is fitted with an auxiliary audio input (3.5mm) for connection of practically any portable audio device with a headphone jack output or analog audio output.

USB Charging Port: The USA Spec BT45-TOY features a USB (type-A) port to charge your smartphone or other portable audio device in your vehicle. Because the BT45-TOY is a hide-away device, you'll want to purchase a USB extension cable (sold separately) to make the unit's USB charging port accessible. The USB charging port is rated at 5V/2.1A.

Note: This USB port is for charging only; it does not support music streaming.

Dip Switches: There are 4 dip switches that will need to be configured to depending on which emulation mode works best with your radio (CD Changer, SAT, MD Changer, etc.).

Installation: The USA Spec BT45-TOY installs under the dash and behind the factory radio.

Q
I have noticed that the manufacturer's warranty only covers units sold from "authorized dealers." Is crutchfield an "authorized dealer" of this product? Or is the warranty assured through crutchfield?
[ Russell  Jul 03, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
Hi Russell! We are authorized retailers of all of the items we carry, so your warranty will be fully recognized by the manufacturer.

Q
In a 2005 Land Cruiser, does this go in the "SAT" channel? and does it show song data?
[ briman  May 06, 2019 ]
6 answers
A
On our Lexus we could plug it into any channel (we chose CD, since we didn't have a SAT option & our CD player broke long ago). It doesn't show song data but may on a newer audio system. Bluetooth works great, the hardest part was prying the dash apart to remove the radio & plug the BT45-TOY into the back (instead of hiding it we removed part of the old ashtray & it sits in that space.)
[ Kelly  May 07, 2019 ]
A
Not the exact answer you're looking for but ... in a 2007 RX350, I believe you can program it to use any channel you wish. I don't believe that the song data changed from the vehicle's default display. In other words, I don't believe this unit alters your existing display settings.
[ Joseph  May 07, 2019 ]
A
On mine the system thinks it is playing a CD. The song data shows on the title info fields.
[ RICK  May 07, 2019 ]
A
I installed mine in a 2006 Lexus it operates through the SAT option. Mine displays the artist name and song title when used with my samsung galaxy. additionally I can change songs on the steering wheel control. you should be very pleased
[ Michael  May 06, 2019 ]
A
For a 2005 Land Cruiser, I do not know. I have it installed on a 2008 Sequoia and it does Song Title and Artist when you flip to text from the SAT station screen.
[ Scott  May 06, 2019 ]
A
Ours was set up to work in "disc 4" of our 6 disc changer. Does not show song data 2006 Lexus LX470

Q
Will my steering wheel controls control audio? (2005 Toyota Land Cruiser)
[ briman  May 06, 2019 ]
6 answers
A
It did on my 2006 Lexus Rx400.
[ Douglas  May 07, 2019 ]
A
It should. I installed the Bluetooth unit in my 2006 Lexus GX 470 (land cruiser Prado) and steering controls adjust volume and advance songs off my phone.
[ ian  May 07, 2019 ]
A
I have an 08 Scion xB and the controls all work. Volume and next song. I have the stock stereo that came with my model. My dash no longer dims, but that might be from my previous stereo being stolen in a careless fashion.
[ Jonathan  May 06, 2019 ]
A
Yes! Volume and Selection work on our 2003. I do not use the phone function.
[ AARON  May 06, 2019 ]
A
Yes, however don't count on the device working after 6 months. I've gone through two BT45-Toy devices. Both professionally installed. With each I eventually lost am-fm radio and the bluetooth didn't always work and when they did they crackled with distortion. The vendor will not refund however they'll send you another device that I assume is rebuilt.
[ paul  May 06, 2019 ]
A
All existing vehicle controls will continue to work as they do now.

Q
I have a 2006 Avalon Limited with the navigation system and what the owner's manual calls "Radio type 3" which is the fanciest one Toyota offered that year, I believe. Will installing this device interfere with any of my current controls, including the ones on the steering wheel?
[ Adam  Apr 14, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
Adam, no it will not interfere with anything. The steering wheel controls still work. I put this in my 2005 Avalon Limited with navigation. It plugs into the satellite (SAT) plug in the back of radio. It is then controlled as SAT on the mode.

Q
Im currently using an FM Bluetooth transmitter to stream audio on my Lexus IS250. While sound is ok is not the best. Very muffled audio and at times distorted. Will this device give me better sound or will it be just as equivalent as a transmitter?
[ Joshua  Feb 02, 2019 ]
5 answers
A
I did think the sound was better, yes. FM transmitters are not good. I've used them many times in the past and none of them seemed to have good sound. Hope this helps.
[ Brian  Feb 05, 2019 ]
A
The sound is perfect and exactly what you would be looking for. The only drawback we found on the unit is if your in the car and Bluetooth is connected and you are not using Bluetooth mode, say your on fm, anytime your phone makes a noise from a call or anything it automatically switches over to blue tooth. You essentially have to turn Bluetooth off on your phone if you want to be in the car and use fm or cd.
[ Cody  Feb 03, 2019 ]
A
I've never used the plug in bluetooth transmitters so i can't speak on that, but in my 07 Tacoma I still have the USA Spec running and have had no issues, sound quality is still as good as factory. The ONLY issue I have is not being able to use my factory steering wheel controls. Other than that i'm satisfied.
[ Juan  Feb 03, 2019 ]
A
I have on in my 2009 Toyota RAV4 with in dash navigation system and screen, audio is very good. Should be a great improvement over what you describe. The speaker phone though the car works very well also. Be aware, installation might be best left to a professional, unless you are really good with tools and such.
[ Harry  Feb 02, 2019 ]
A
Sounds much better as far as a good bluetooth connection allows, no hiss, will loose the CD player - but who uses CD's anyways. Installed on my 2007 IS350, working great for 18 months no problems.

Q
Will this fit my 2001 Lexus RX300?
[ muncriefdion  Jan 10, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
It can work in the non-Nakamichi sound systems in a 2001 RX300 with a separate harness. The separate harness that is needed will vary depending on if you do or don't have the stock navigation. I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 if you don't have the Nakamichi sound system so you can get the correct one My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

Q
I'm looking to install this in my 1998 Toyota Celica. The factory unit stereo only has radio and a tape deck, so since I don't have an "Aux" or "Sat" source button to connect this adapter to, how do I "switch" to bluetooth audio?
[ Josh  Oct 17, 2018 ]
1 answer
A
Hi Josh , I was asked by Crutchfield to help answer your question as I purchased one of these units almost 2 years ago. While I am not certain about the compatibility to your specific car I can attest to the quality and performance of the unit itself.I installed the adapter myself on my 2007 Lexus GX470. The quality is evident and the instructions were very clear. Its plug and play. The unit syncs with my iphones very quickly and has worked perfectly since my install, again almost 2 years ago.I live in Rural Northern California and drive on very rough dirt and gravel roads daily, really some of the most punishing roads in the USA so the Bluetooth adapter has definitely passed the bounce and dust test !I believe that if you have a great sounding stock stereo system as I have (Mark Levinson premium system) and just need the option of bluetooth interface then this unit is the best option out there and Crutchfield is the best when it comes to customer satisfaction. I have bought from them on and off for around 30 years ! Enjoy !

Q
I have 2007 Sequoia with JBL navigation system. It has steering wheel controls. I added a siriusXM dock that uses antenna to play music (so I have to find open station on FM radio) and it has a rear seat DVD player (in the console). I never really use rear seat DVD player anymore so it can go. Will this still work?
[ ResqDoc  Jul 07, 2018 ]
2 answers
A
I don't know about the Sequoia, but it works great in my 2007 Lexus RX 350. All of my controls on the steering wheel work the same as before. The DIY installation was relatively simple. The hardest part is getting the flip switches on the back of the unit configured correctly. All of my music is on my phone, so it is the perfect match for me, no cables. Just make sure you get the correct unit for your vehicle.
[ James  Jul 23, 2018 ]
A
The BT45-TOY will be compatible but, when you have the factory rear seat DVD entertainment system, you will also need the BT-TOYR adapter harness for the installation: www.crutchfield.com/p_581BTTOYR/item.html

Q
i have a 2012 Camry Hyrbrid XLE with the premium JBL sound system. Recently the bluetooth has started to malfunction and I can't find anyplace that works on this specific Toyota unit. Will this USA Spec be a plug n play install? Would I be able to pair my phone to the USA Spec unit only and it would then handle all my hands free calling? Thanks
[ David  Mar 06, 2018 ]
2 answers
A
It should be plug and play. When you connect it to your radio it should function off either the CD or the SAT option on your radio depending on how your set it up. Once connected you should be able to unpair from the car radio and pair to this unit. You will have to use the mic on this unit. It should take care of your hands free calling.
[ Gabriel  Mar 08, 2018 ]
A
I put this unit in a 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser which already had hands-free phone but did not have music streaming capability. The original system still works in the new system installed can't be used for hands-free calling in music streaming. It has a proper wiring harness so it is a plug-and-play type thing but you probably will have to remove the radio to make the connection. I have been happy with this product.

Q
I have a 2008 Sequoia with the jbl system with bluelogic for phone. Can I use this for streaming music only? and will the headunit still work for the calls as before?
[ chad  Sep 28, 2017 ]
3 answers
A
Since your phone will connect EITHER to the head unit or to the BT-TOY at any given time, but NOT to both at the same time, what you are asking for is unlikely to work. This seems to be the nature of bluetooth implementation for sound capable devices
[ RAGHUNANDAN  Sep 29, 2017 ]
A
If you're looking for streaming only this might not be for you. As far as I know, as long as you're connected to this unit it will answer your phone when it rings. Perhaps you need a Bluetooth car kit for music only.
[ Gabriel  Sep 29, 2017 ]
A
This device will intercept all bluetooth functions when paired with a phone.
[ David  Sep 29, 2017 ]
Q
can you use this just for bluetooth or do you have to use aux/usb to?
[ Marie  Aug 22, 2017 ]
7 answers
A
It is Bluetooth only. The usb is for charging only. It is very good unit for calls and streaming
[ authur  Aug 23, 2017 ]
A
This was installed in a 2008 Lexus IS250. It connects to the phone through Bluetooth as there is no aux/USB. in the car. The USB included in this kit is for charging only.
[ Gabriel  Aug 23, 2017 ]
A
I use mine mostly for Bluetooth (talking on the phone or streaming music). You can also use an aux cord to connect to things like the older iPods that don't have Bluetooth capability. I barely use the aux cord.
[ Nancy  Aug 22, 2017 ]
A
Mine is hidden behind the dash and runs solely off BT. The only problem is that it yells "connected" every time you turn on the car. Otherwise, it works flawlessly on my 2003 Land Cruiser (LX470) to add BT to the Mark Levinson NAV deck. It does not show song titles, phone numbers, etc.
[ Findley  Aug 22, 2017 ]
A
Yes, it is a Bluetooth connection for a smartphone to stream music. My Land Cruiser already had Bluetooth for phone connectivity so I only use it to stream music. Both system still operate and you do not need to use the USB port.
[ Robert  Aug 22, 2017 ]
A
You may use it just for bluetooth. It has three options (power, aux and bluetooth). But you can hook up any combination: all three, just two (power and bluetooth) or just one (bluetooth). I didn't want to keep opening the dash so I added the power line to charge the iPhone that was using the bluetooth and put the aux line into my glove compartment if a friend wanted to listen to something else.
[ David  Aug 22, 2017 ]
A
In my Lexus LX470 I am able to use this for Bluetooth and Auxiliary; I just have to switch discs on my Lexus audio controls. If all I wanted was Bluetooth, it would work just fine. If all I wanted was AUX it would work just fine. The usb however is only for charging.
[ Robert  Aug 22, 2017 ]
Q
I currently have BT for phone only in my '09 Highlander. If I install this unit, will I still have to install the microphone that comes with it or will I be able to use the existing microphone in my factory stereo?
[ Timothy  Jul 20, 2016 ]
1 answer
A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Q
I have iPhone 6s plus, how well does this work with my iPhone and my Lexus RX350 with navigation?
[ Adeyeye  Mar 20, 2016 ]
1 answer
A
I don't have a Lexus. I have a 2011 Tacoma and this works great. I tried a unit from Pac Audio the first time. It did not work. This unit works great and sounds great. I am using it with my iPhone 5s. I can Bluetooth music while navagating. When I receive a phone call it switches over to the phone. Afterward it goes back to the music. This unit works.
