Ralph Graves

A Bluetooth Sonos speaker? Your move!

Sonos Move

The Sonos Move is both dustproof and water-resistant, so you can use it poolside — or even oceanside.

Been waiting for a portable Bluetooth speaker that can wirelessly connect to your Sonos audio system? So have we! Enter the Sonos Move. In Wi-Fi mode, it works like other speakers in the Sonos family. It gives you the same easy access to a multitude of audio streaming services, your digital music collection, and more via a smooth, well-designed mobile app. The speaker even has built-in microphones for Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant voice commands.

Switch to the Move to Bluetooth mode, and you can use this portable speaker out on the deck or on the beach, beyond the reach of your Wi-Fi network. Just pair your phone with the Move, then fire up a music app like Spotify®, Pandora®, or TIDAL.

Ready for the outdoors

The Sonos Move is dustproof and water-resistant, so it can withstand raindrops or snowfall. Its built-in rechargeable battery can deliver up to 11 hours of playback. Of course, if you leave it on its charging base, the speaker can play all day long. You can even wirelessly pair two Sonos Moves for stereo sound. And it has a built-in handle, so it's easy to bring along.

Fine-tune the sound with Auto Trueplay

You can optimize the sound of the Move wherever you place it. Turn its microphones on and Auto Trueplay will automatically adjust the EQ. And as long as the Move is stationary, it will continue to monitor and adjust for optimal sound.

Compatible with AirPlay 2

The Sonos Move has Apple AirPlay 2 built in. That means you can stream audio directly from your iPhone®, iPad®, or Mac® computer through your Sonos system. That includes soundtracks from YouTube® videos and Netflix movies.

Hands-on with the Sonos Move

"I've equipped several rooms in my home with Sonos gear, and I've been a frequent user of their system for years. I was excited to get my hands on the Move — the company's first portable speaker — to give it a solid test run. I found myself using it each day for things that my current Sonos setup won't let me do easily.

"One room where I don't have a speaker permanently installed is the bathroom. Because the Move is water-resistant, I was able to place it on a nearby shelf and enjoy tunes while taking a shower. I found that it had plenty of power and volume to play loud and clear over the sound of the running water.

"While I did most of my listening indoors, within the range of my Wi-Fi system, I still found the Move's Bluetooth mode to be useful. I'm an Android user, so for me, Bluetooth was a simple and convenient way to play the sound from my favourite YouTube channels.

"Setup through the app was a snap, as I have come to expect from Sonos. I was a little surprised that the Move is noticeably bigger than the Sonos One and Play:1 desktop speaker models. That extra size seemed to translate into fuller-sounding bass. I never got close to maxing out the volume — again, this speaker has plenty of "gas in the tank" if you need to crank it up. The fit and finish are excellent, and the charging base (a simple ring design) is sleek, minimalist, and cool. "

Voice commands at home

When connected to a Wi-Fi network, you can use voice commands with the Sonos Move, similar to the super-popular Sonos One. Choose either Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, and control your entire Sonos multi-room audio system using your voice. The Sonos Move has a mic array with noise cancellation to ensure it hears your commands. Tell Alexa or Google Assistant to mix and match from Spotify, Deezer, TuneIn internet radio, and more. You can control even more music features through the Sonos app on your smartphone or tablet.

Beyond music

The Sonos Move, connected to your home Wi-Fi network, lets you access many of the services Alexa and Google Assistant have to offer.

The free Amazon Alexa app lets you set up "skills." These are the services you can direct Alexa to access. It includes information sites, popular smart home brands such as Nest and Wemo®, sports sites, and more.

The same is true with the free Google Home app. You can have hands-free voice control over compatible smart home devices from Wemo, Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings, Nest, and others.

Speaker Section

Portable & Weather Resistant (IP56): The Sonos Move is weather resistant with IP56 rating, so it can be utilized indoors or outdoors. The IP56 rating makes the Sonos Move resistant to water, dust, and other elements. It is protected from very fine particles (such as dust) and heavy liquid splashing (including light rain and snowfall). The Sonos Move's rugged and durable outer shell is also resistant to bumps and falls; humidity, salt spray, and UV rays; and hot or cold temperatures. An integrated ergonomic handle makes the portable speaker easy to pickup and carry.

Note: The Sonos Move cannot be submerged in water and should not be left outdoors in a rain storm. The included charging base is not weather resistant and should only be used indoors.

Audio Section: The Sonos Move wireless speaker features a single down-firing tweeter and one mid-woofer driver powered by two Class-D amplifiers. The one downward-firing tweeter creates a crisp, clear high-frequency response that disperses evenly for an ultra wide soundscape. The one cone mid-woofer driver integrated into the cabinet ensures faithful playback of mid-range vocal frequencies plus deep, rich bass. Two Class-D digital amplifiers perfectly tuned to match the speaker drivers and acoustic architecture deliver dynamic sound with low distortion.

  • Auto Trueplay: The Sonos Move speaker's built-in microphones detect what type of music is playing and measure the frequency response of your surroundings. Using this Trueplay Tuning software, the speaker then adjusts its EQ for perfectly balanced sound. Auto Trueplay is triggered whenever the Move speaker is placed in a new location, and continuously refines the sound while the Move is stationary. Make sure the Move's microphone array is turned on (Auto Trueplay will not work when the microphone array is turned off). Trueplay tuning is available via WiFi or Bluetooth.
  • Stereo Pairing: You can use two Sonos Move speakers in a stereo pair - one speaker acts as a dedicated left, while the other speaker acts as a dedicated right. Stereo Pairing is only available when the Sonos Move is in Network (WiFi) mode; not available in Bluetooth mode. The Sonos Move cannot be used as wireless rear surrounds. The Sonos Move will not pair with the Sonos Sub.

Rechargeable Battery & Charging Base: The Sonos Move is equipped with a rechargeable battery that provides up to 11 hours of continuous playback time (may require a firmware update for the higher efficiency). The battery can easily be recharged using the included charging base. The charging base plugs into an AC wall outlet and the Sonos Move simply docks in the base to charge the battery. There is also a USB-C connector on the back of the Sonos Move which allows you to recharge the battery without the charging base by using a USB-C cable and a USB/AC power adapter (both sold separately). The included rechargeable battery should last about 3 years or 900 charges, after which you can purchase a replacement battery directly from Sonos.

Sonos Wireless Multiroom Audio Eco-System: The Move is part of the Sonos wireless multiroom audio eco-system consisting of a family of wireless network speakers, players, and amplifiers. Start with a single Sonos product and add more Sonos products over time. With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms of your home. Compatible distributed audio sources include internet radio, online music services, local network music libraries, as well as hardwired inputs. Up to 32 Sonos devices and 16 groups can be connected in one system. The Sonos Move is compatible with the new Sonos S2 operating system (OS) and the older Sonos S1 operating system (OS).

  • Sonos S2 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos Five, ARC, Beam (Gen 2), Sub (Gen 3), and any Sonos products released after May 2020 will only be compatible with Sonos S2.
  • Sonos S2 and S1 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 (Gen 2), Playbase, Playbar, Connect (Gen 2), Connect:Amp (Gen 2), One (Gen 1/2), One SL, Beam, Amp, Port, Boost, Move, and Sub (Gen 1/2) support both Sonos S2 and S1 operating systems.
  • Sonos S1 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos CR200 Controller, Zone Player, Bridge, Connect (Gen 1), Connect: Amp (Gen 1), and Play: 5 (Gen 1) will only support the older S1 operating system.

Notes:

  • If you have both, older "legacy" Sonos products and newer Sonos products in your system, you have the option to create two separate eco-systems - one that will be controlled with the older Sonos S1 controller app and the other that will be controlled by the newer Sonos S2 controller app.
  • Click here for more information regarding Sonos "Legacy" S1 versus the new Sonos S2 Operating System and App.

Internet Service Provider: You'll need a high-speed, wired internet service provider connection such as cable, fiber, or DSL. Wireless internet connections such as satellite, mobile hotspots, or 4G LTE routers can experience delays between the internet connection and Sonos and are not supported. Using these types of connections can cause music to not play, skip, or cut out completely.

Wireless Setup: All Sonos products support 2.4GHz WiFi (802.11 b/g) and Open, WEP, and WPA/WPA2 Personal WiFi security standards. Some newer Sonos products support dual-band 2.4/5GHz WiFi (802.11 b/g/n/ac) and WPA3.

  • The network must not contain enterprise access points that have been configured to require certificates or other forms of enterprise authentication. If you are using multiple access points, make sure they are all set to the same 2.4GHz or 5GHz wireless channel.
  • Networks using wireless range extenders are known to cause issues with Sonos systems that are configured in a wireless setup. If you need to extend your home WiFi to use Sonos in a wireless setup, we recommend using a WiFi mesh router to do so.
  • Sonos cannot connect to guest networks or networks that use a Port page to login.

Wired Setup Requirements: A Sonos system operating in a wired setup will require one of your Sonos products to remain connected to the router via Ethernet cable at all times. If your Sonos system is in a wired setup and you use a WiFi mesh router with multiple wireless nodes, we recommend wiring your Sonos product directly to the primary wired mesh node. Avoid wiring any Sonos products to the wireless mesh nodes. If you are on a corporate or advanced network, it must not block Spanning Tree Protocol (STP).

Note: Ethernet over Power devices (also known as HomePlugs or Powerline adaptors) are not supported by Sonos. While they may work for some systems, they tend to cause intermittent problems with Sonos. EoP adapters create an added delay between your network and Sonos. If the internet connection is too slow or the delay is too great, it can cause your music to skip or cut out completely or your players to drop off from the network.

Sonos S1 or S2 Controller App: Sonos offers a Sonos Controller app for Apple iOS 14.0+, Android OS 8.0+, Fire OS 7.0, Mac OSX 10.11+, and Windows 8+. The Sonos S2 is a new app and operating system (OS) that powers the next generation of products and experiences. In addition to new features, usability updates, and more personalization moving forward, Sonos S2 enables higher resolution audio technologies for music and home theater. Most Sonos products are compatible with S2. Some older Sonos "legacy" products will not support the advances of S2 due to their memory and processing power. The older Sonos "legacy" app is referred to as the Sonos S1 app.

  • Sonos Products That Support the Sonos S1 and S2 Controller App: Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 (Gen 2), Playbase, Playbar, Connect (Gen 2), Connect:Amp (Gen 2), One (Gen 1/2), One SL, Beam, Amp, Port, Boost, Move, Sub (Gen 1/2).
  • Sonos Products That Only Support The New S2 Contoller App: Five, ARC, Sub (Gen 3), and any Sonos products released after May 2020.
  • Sonos Products That Only Support The Old S1 Controller App: CR200 Controller, Zone Player, Bridge, Connect (Gen 1), Connect: Amp (Gen 1), Play: 5 (Gen 1).

Notes:

  • If you have both, older "legacy" Sonos products and newer Sonos products, you have the option to create two separate eco-systems - one that will be controlled with the older Sonos S1 controller app and the other that will be controlled by the newer Sonos S2 controller app.
  • Click here for more information regarding Sonos "Legacy" S1 versus the new Sonos S2 Operating System and App.

Supported Audio Files: Supported audio files from online music services and local music libraries include MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, and WAV. Sonos can supports FLAC music files up to 16-bit/44.1kHz for "CD-quality" sound. All supported sample rates include 16kHz, 22.5kHz, 24.0kHz, 32.0kHz, 44.1kHz, and 48kHz. Internet Radio streams are supported only in WMA, MP3, and AAC.

Q
How does the sound quality of the move compare to JBL 310 PartyBox? Will 2 Sonos move paired as stereo pair sound way better than a JBL 310 PartyBox?
eddie  Dec 25, 2022
2 answers
A
I actually own both the PartyBox and the Sonos Move. The JBL puts out more volume as compared to a pair of Sonos Move boxes, but the quality of the sound is much better with the Move. I use the JBL at outdoor settings where volume is needed and I use the Move indoors or in a smaller patio setting where the quality is nice to have but the loud volume is not needed.

I have no idea. I think it sounds great. I have a set of main speakers costing thousands of dollars and I was totally impressed by the MOVE. I have never been a fan of JBL having been somewhat of an audiophile for 50+ years,

Q
Can this speaker be left outside in the rain?
jim  Jun 26, 2021
2 answers
A
It is presumably water-resistant, but it is not an outside speaker. For short periods, it would be fine.
jeffrey  Jun 26, 2021
A
Speaker is water resistant. Take it to beach and pool and it gets wet without issues. Not sure I would leave out in the rain though.

Q
what is the amp draw using a 12volt system while charging?
will  Apr 25, 2021
1 answer
A
I tried to hook up the Move to a 12v charger via USB C and it would not charge. Quick search online shows that the Move needs a charger capable of 3 A at 12V, for a total of 36 W or the Move will not charge. Sorry couldn't answer the specific question, but something to keep in mind since a lot of 12V usb chargers out there max at around 2 Amps output.

Yes, you can.

I only have one so I can't answer. I'm guessing no since the Bluetooth connection is like any other on speakers that I have.

Q
can the speaker be used while laying on its back instead of upright?
lewis  Feb 26, 2021
4 answers
A
Yes, this speaker can be used while lying on its back. I'd never thought to try that before, thanks Lewis
paul  Mar 03, 2021
A
Technically, yes. The Move speaker does work when it is placed on its back. Obviously, I would not recommend it as it decreases the sound quality.
brian  Feb 27, 2021
A
YES. It can be used that way also.
carol  Feb 26, 2021
A
The Move will play normally when on its back on battery power. It is a little wobbly since it is not designed to lay that way, but it is sturdy enough not to roll off a table, even at a slight uneven surface. It will only charge the battery when placed upright in the charging cradle, so leaving it on its back it will eventually run the battery out even in standby mode.

Q
Can you use Move as your only speaker for a Sonos system or do you need another unit to do so?

A
Hi! While we have many Sonos speakers, we often use the Move as a single unit, especially for COVID socially distanced outdoor fire pit hangs. We love it. Hope this helps!
christine  Nov 30, 2020
A
It can be standalone.

Q
Can voice control be disabled on Sonos move?
william  Nov 24, 2020
5 answers
A
Yes, just simply press the microphone button to disable it. Be aware that doing so will also disable Trueplay, Trueplay requires the microphone to make adjustments to sound quality.
kevin  Dec 01, 2020
A
Hi Billy, do you mean Alexa? Yes, there is a button on the top of the Move to disable/enable.
jeffrey  Nov 24, 2020
A
Sure, just turn the microphone off. Just tap the microphone light to turn it off or on.
douglas  Nov 24, 2020
A
Yes, there is a touch control on top of the unit that mutes the microphone.
sean  Nov 24, 2020
A
Yes. You have to specifically set it up anyway, but don't have to. You can use the move simply as part of a Sonos system. I'm running a pair in my family room to listen to music while playing video games, but it's nice just to pick one or both up to take out to the deck.

how long does the unit need to be charged when you purchase it. Also, how do you know when the unit if fully charged? Thanks

A
When we got the unit, it was charged enough for immediate use. I think the blue light goes out when charging is complete. It's a fantastic speaker. Hope this helps!

The Move does have bluetooth capabilities, though I never use it in that way.

Q
Hello - I would like to wirelessly connect a set (4) of these to the Sonos Subwoofer 3. Will Move work with the wireless Sonos subwoofer?
supercell  Oct 27, 2021
1 answer
A
The Sonos Sub cannot be joined with these speakers to play the bass. However, these speakers can be used as wireless surround sound speakers, the Sub being used for the base in the surround sound system, and select other Sonos gear being the front speakers for a 5.1 surround sound system.

Q
When strictly comparing audio quality, how does this compare to the One or Five? Is it a slight improvement to the one, or closer to the Five?
chris  Dec 01, 2020
3 answers
A
Slight improvement to the One, but definitely recommend if the portability is at all important to you.
matthew  Dec 02, 2020
A
I have all 3 speakers and the Five is clearly the best in terms of sound quality. The Move is closer to the Five than the One.
richard  Dec 01, 2020
A
IMO the sound quality of the Move is closer to the 5. I have both the Move and a One, and the Move's sound quality is superior. What I also like, and have observed, is how well the Trueplay makes a huge difference in adjusting to the room's acoustics.
