Sonos PLAYBASE

The slim profile of the Playbase helps it fit easily into your room's decor.

Spacious TV sound and more

The Sonos Playbase is just about the easiest way to get spacious, realistic sound from your TV. It's a low-profile base that simply sits directly underneath your TV, yet it fills the room with rich Sonos sound. Just use the provided digital audio cable to connect your TV to the Playbase, and you'll be up and running in no time.

Plus, the Playbase becomes part of your Sonos wireless multi-room audio system. You can send sound from your TV to other rooms, or play music from other sources through the Playbase.

Made for movies and music

The Playbase features ten amplified internal drivers. Six midrange drivers and three tweeters are angled to widely disperse the sound while ensuring proper balance. A built-in woofer for bass frequencies provides additional punch.

The system's Speech Enhancement mode brings dialogue to the fore and reduces the volume level of loud sound effects. Night Mode enhances quiet sounds and greatly reduces loud effects, so you can watch TV while other sleep.

The Playbase also delivers great sound with your music, too. You'll hear plenty of detail and well-balanced, natural sound from your tunes.

Wireless home theatre options

The Playbase can be paired wirelessly with a Sonos Sub to create a 3.1 home theatre system. Add two Play:1 speakers, and you've got a pair of wireless rear speakers, giving you a 5.1 surround system with truly engaging sound.

Like your TV up a little higher? The Sanus WSTV1 TV base was designed for use with the PLAYBASE. It features a 29”-high swivel mount, so you can have your TV at a higher viewing level without wall-mounting.

Part of a Sonos multi-room audio system

The Playbase, like other Sonos music players, connect to your home network — either via Wi-Fi® or by connecting one player to your router via Ethernet to create a dedicated Sonos network. This network, known for its extensive range and superior performance, gives you house-wide access to tunes stored on your PC along with a wealth of Internet audio choices.

And it lets you stream audio from your movies and TV shows into other rooms. So if you're watching a game you can keep up with the play-by-play through a Sonos speaker in the kitchen when you get a snack. (For the best wireless performance, we recommend adding the Sonos Boost.)

The Sonos app gives you easy wireless control

You can use your iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ smartphone or tablet to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Compatible with AirPlay 2

The Sonos Playbase has AirPlay 2 built in. That means you can stream audio directly from your iPhone®, iPad®, or Mac® computer through your Sonos system. That includes soundtracks from YouTube® videos and Netflix movies.

And if you subscribe to Apple Music®, you can do even more. Use Siri on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV 4K to control Apple Music with voice commands. Tell it what selection or playlist to play — and which Sonos speakers you want it to play through.

Trueplay speaker tuning for optimal sound

If you use your Sonos control app on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can use that same Apple device to fine-tune the Playbase with Sonos's Trueplay feature. It uses the mic built into your device to measure how the sound reflects off your walls and furnishings. It then adjusts the speaker's settings automatically for the best possible sound. (Currently for iOS devices only.)

Over 30 streaming music services on demand

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of streaming music services, including TIDAL, Spotify®, Pandora®, and much more. You also have access to thousands of internet radio stations from around the world through TuneIn Radio and terrestrial radio stations through iHeartRadio. If you subscribe to SiriusXM Internet Radio, you can tune into all your favourite programming on any Sonos player in your system.

Soundbase Speaker: Complement your flat-panel television with the Sonos PlayBase speaker for rich, room-filling HiFi sound. The Sonos PlayBase is simple to setup, control, and expand. It requires only two cable connections - a power cord & optical digital audio cable. The PlayBase supports playback of all sources connected to your TV; such as cable/satellite, Blu-ray/DVD player, video game system, etc. The Sonos PlayBase can also wirelessly stream music from your computer, as well as various online music services and Internet Radio. The PlayBase can even sync with other Sonos speakers wirelessly. The unit can be controlled from your TV's remote, or by your Apple iOS device or Android smartphone using the free Sonos App from iTunes or Google Play.

Note: The PlayBase works with all amplified and non-amplified Sonos products (sold separately).

Active 10-Speaker Design: The Sonos PlayBase speaker features a sophisticated 10-speaker design with three tweeters (the left & right tweeters are angled for a wider sound stage), six midrange drivers, and one subwoofer. Each speaker is driven by a perfectly matched Class D amplifier. The PlayBase acts as your front left, front right, and center-channel speaker.

Optical Digital Input (Dolby Digital/PCM): The Sonos PlayBase speaker connects to your television via its optical (toslink) digital input. The unit supports both Dolby Digital (5.1ch) and PCM (2ch) audio signals through its digital input. Make sure to turn your television's speakers off.

  • Dolby Digital: Your television's off-air and network movie apps can be delivered in Dolby Digital format to the PlayBase. The PlayBase will decode and utilize up to six discrete sound channels (five channels for center, right front, left front, right rear, and left rear; and 1 discrete Low-Frequency Effects (LFE) or subwoofer channel) available through the Dolby Digital format. Not compatible with Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS HD, or any other surround format (only supports Dolby Digital 2ch to 5.1ch).
  • Stereo/PCM: AV sources connected to your TV (such as Blu-ray, cable/satellite, video game) are delivered in Stereo/PCM format to the PlayBase. The PlayBase will decode the Stereo/PCM format into a left front and right front channels directly from the 2 channel Stereo provided and will decode a matrixed center, right rear, left rear, and subwoofer channel from the audio signal.
Note: The digital optical output terminals of most newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).

Mounting Options: The Sonos PlayBase can rest under the pedestal stand or between the pedestal feet of your flat-panel TV. The PlayBase can support TVs weighing up to 77 lbs with a pedestal stand that measure no more than 28.375" wide x 14.9375" deep. It can also fit in between a TV's pedestal feet that measure no less than 28.375" apart and 2.3125" high. In addition, you can simply place the Sonos PlayBase on a shelf that is located under or above the TV; allow at least 2" of open space around the speaker.

Trueplay Tuning (for Apple iOS): The layout of a room, and where a speaker is placed, can have a significant impact on the sound that you hear. Trueplay, an auto-tune app within the Sonos App,  uses the microphone in your Apple iOS 8.0+ device to measure how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, and then fine tunes the Sonos PlayBase speaker to make sure it sounds great no matter where you've placed it. The Sonos PlayBase speaker already sounds fantastic, but Trueplay brings you even closer to how music should sound. Completing Trueplay tuning for a room takes approximately 3 minutes from start to finish.

Note: Trueplay is currently not compatible with Android.

Equalization (EQ): During the PlayBase setup process you will be guided through its audio calibration process. If desired, you can change the sound settings (bass, treble or loudness) for the Sonos PlayBase. Bass boosts lower frequencies, treble boosts higher frequencies, while loudness boosts both bass and treble to improve the sound at low volume.

Sound Options: The Sonos PlayBase offers various sound settings to customize your listening experience.

  • Speech Enhancements: The Speech Enhancement setting makes the TV dialog easier to hear.
  • Night Sound: The Night Sound setting adjusts the audio for night time viewing so you can reduce the volume and still experience proper balance and range. At lower volumes, quiet sounds are enhanced and the intensity of loud sounds is reduced.
  • Audio Delay (Lip Sync): You can increase or decrease the sound delay if the image on your TV and the sound from the PlayBase are not in sync.

TV Auto Play: When TV Auto Play is set to On, TV audio automatically plays through the PlayBase when you turn on your television. If music is playing when the TV is turned on, the music immediately stops and the PlayBase switches to TV audio.

Wireless 5.1ch Speaker System: Add a Sonos Sub and a pair of Sonos speakers for a wireless 5.1ch surround sound experience (sub and speakers sold separately). Now you don't have to run wires to a powered sub or rear speakers to enjoy true 5.1ch audio. In conjunction with the Sonos Boost, you can even use the Sonos Amp as a rear amplifier with separate rear speakers; in this configuration you will still need to run wire between the rear speakers and the Sonos Amp (Boost, Amp, and speakers sold separately).

Note: Each Sonos product in the 5.1ch speaker system must be utilizing the same Sonos S1 ("legacy") or S2 ("new") operating system and app.

Network & Multiroom Audio

Sonos Wireless Multiroom Audio Eco-System: The PlayBase is part of the Sonos wireless multiroom audio eco-system consisting of a family of wireless network speakers, players, and amplifiers. Start with a single Sonos product and add more Sonos products over time. With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms of your home. Compatible distributed audio sources include internet radio, online music services, local network music libraries, as well as hardwired inputs. Up to 32 Sonos devices and 16 groups can be connected in one system. The Sonos Amp is compatible with the new Sonos S2 operating system (OS) and the older Sonos S1 operating system (OS).

  • Sonos S2 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos Five, ARC, Sub (Gen 3), and any Sonos products released after May 2020 will only be compatible with Sonos S2.
  • Sonos S2 and S1 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 (Gen 2), Playbase, Playbar, Connect (Gen 2), Connect:Amp (Gen 2), One (Gen 1/2), One SL, Beam, Amp, Port, Boost, Move, and Sub (Gen 1/2) support both Sonos S2 and S1 operating systems.
  • Sonos S1 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos CR200 Controller, Zone Player, Bridge, Connect (Gen 1), Connect: Amp (Gen 1), and Play: 5 (Gen 1) will only support the older S1 operating system.

Notes:

  • If you have have both, older "legacy" Sonos products and newer Sonos products in your system, you have the option to create two separate eco-systems - one that will be controlled with the older Sonos S1 controller app and the other that will be controlled by the newer Sonos S2 controller app.
  • Click here for more information regarding Sonos "Legacy" S1 versus the new Sonos S2 Operating System and App.

Two Ways to Connect Wirelessly: In order to enjoy internet radio, online music services, your local network music libraries and Apple AirPlay 2, you'll need to connect the Sonos PlayBase to your home's wireless network router and ISP (internet service provider). Sonos brings your great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project through WiFi or its SonosNet mesh network.

  • WiFi Wireless Network: Sonos can also operate over your home's existing WiFi network (802.11 b/g; 2.4GHz). Because you are connecting wirelessly to your home's existing WiFi network, you do not need to hardwire a Sonos Boost to your router/modem. The Sonos system's wireless range will be dependent on your home's existing WiFi network. Sonos products manufactured after March 2014 are loaded with the proper firmware and ready to go out of the box for WiFi connectivity. All Sonos products manufactured prior to that date will require a wired connection to facilitate a firmware upgrade and  hereafter they will be able to work over WiFi.
  • SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network: Sonos can utilize its own SonosNet proprietary wireless mesh network technology to provides superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensure synchronous music playback, and avoid sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the Sonos wireless system is approximately 100', depending upon your home's layout. In addition to the Sonos Port, you will need a Sonos Boost (sold separately) connected to your network router/modem via a Ethernet cable.
Notes:
  • You cannot connect the Sonos system via both the SonosNet proprietary mesh network and WiFi; you will need to choose one. Sonos recommends using its proprietary SonosNet wireless mesh network over WiFi when applicable.
  • The Sonos proprietary mesh network will provide a more secure wireless connection with fewer interruptions for optimum performance.
  • WiFi is subject to greater interference from other WiFi and 2.4GHz devices on your network.
  • WiFi connectivity is not compatible with 5GHz (you will have to use the Sonos wireless mesh network in this case).

Ethernet Port (10/100 Mbps): In addition to its built-in SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network and WiFi, the Sonos Amp is also equipped with one Ethernet port (10/100 Mbps). Use it to wire directly to your router to operate Sonos if WiFi is unstable, or use the Ethernet port to provide Internet accessibility to non-wireless devices if you're using a SonosNET Boost setup.

System Requirements

Internet Service Provider: You'll need a high-speed, wired internet service provider connection such as cable, fiber, or DSL. Wireless internet connections such as satellite, mobile hotspots, or 4G LTE routers can experience delays between the internet connection and Sonos and are not supported. Using these types of connections can cause music to not play, skip, or cut out completely.

Wireless Setup: Your network router must broadcast a 2.4GHz signal for Sonos products to connect to. If you have a dual band router (2.4GHz and 5GHz), do not disable the 2.4GHz signal. Wireless-N and Wireless-AC routers should work with Sonos as long as they are still broadcasting over B and G WiFi. Most Wireless-N and AC routers should do this unless manually configured not to.

  • The network must not contain enterprise access points that have been configured to require certificates or other forms of enterprise authentication. If you are using multiple access points, make sure they are all set to the same 2.4GHz wireless channel.
  • Networks using wireless range extenders are known to cause issues with Sonos systems that are configured in a wireless setup. If you need to extend your home WiFi to use Sonos in a wireless setup, we recommend using a WiFi mesh router to do so.
  • Sonos cannot connect to guest networks or networks that use a Port page to login.

Wired Setup Requirements: A Sonos system operating in a wired setup will require one of your Sonos products to remain connected to the router via Ethernet cable at all times. If your Sonos system is in a wired setup and you use a WiFi mesh router with multiple wireless nodes, we recommend wiring your Sonos product directly to the primary wired mesh node. Avoid wiring any Sonos products to the wireless mesh nodes. If you are on a corporate or advanced network, it must not block Spanning Tree Protocol (STP).

Note: Ethernet over Power devices (also known as HomePlugs or Powerline adaptors) are not supported by Sonos. While they may work for some systems, they tend to cause intermittent problems with Sonos. EoP adapters create an added delay between your network and Sonos. If the internet connection is too slow or the delay is too great, it can cause your music to skip or cut out completely or your players to drop off from the network.

Sonos S1 or S2 Controller App: Sonos offers a Sonos Controller app for Apple iOS 11.0+, Android OS 7.0+, Mac OSX 10.11+, and Windows 7+. The Sonos S2 is a new app and operating system (OS) that powers the next generation of products and experiences. In addition to new features, usability updates, and more personalization moving forward, Sonos S2 enables higher resolution audio technologies for music and home theater. Most Sonos products are compatible with S2. Some older Sonos "legacy" products will not support the advances of S2 due to their memory and processing power. The older Sonos "legacy" app is referred to as the Sonos S1 app.

  • Sonos Products That Support the Sonos S1 and S2 Controller App: Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 (Gen 2), Playbase, Playbar, Connect (Gen 2), Connect:Amp (Gen 2), One (Gen 1/2), One SL, Beam, Amp, Port, Boost, Move, Sub (Gen 1/2).
  • Sonos Products That Only Support The New S2 Contoller App: Five, ARC, Sub (Gen 3), and any Sonos products released after May 2020.
  • Sonos Products That Only Support The Old S1 Controller App: CR200 Controller, Zone Player, Bridge, Connect (Gen 1), Connect: Amp (Gen 1), Play: 5 (Gen 1).

Notes:

  • If you have have both, older "legacy" Sonos products and newer Sonos products, you have the option to create two separate eco-systems - one that will be controlled with the older Sonos S1 controller app and the other that will be controlled by the newer Sonos S2 controller app.
  • Click here for more information regarding Sonos "Legacy" S1 versus the new Sonos S2 Operating System and App.

Supported Audio Files: Supported audio files from online music services and local music libraries include MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, and WAV. Sonos can supports FLAC music files up to 16-bit/44.1kHz for "CD-quality" sound. All supported sample rates include 16kHz, 22.5kHz, 24.0kHz, 32.0kHz, 44.1kHz, and 48kHz. Internet Radio streams are supported only in WMA, MP3, and AAC.

Q
can a playbase be mounted under a tv that is mounted on the wall?
hans  Aug 26, 2020

A
No, this is designed to sit on a media console or other solid surface. If you're looking for something wall-mountable, the Sonos Arc would be a better solution.

can't answer the question, the Sonos product did not suit me

It can be, and there are mounts available (made by Sanus and others), but it's about 15" deep, so would really depend on whether you have the clearance. I imagine it would look strange unless your TV is also mounted out from the wall a little bit.
marda  Aug 26, 2020
A
Not ideally. It is at least a foot deep and meant to sit on a shelf or tv cabinet. The play bar would be a better choice.

Q
Can I use my directv remote to control volume or will Inhave to use two remotes?

A
If you use the optical cable from your TV or satellite box to the Playbase your regular remote will control the volume for TV. All other sources will need the Sonos app. Switching is automatic when the TV comes on.
robert  Aug 30, 2017
A
Yes, the playbase will allow you to use almost any remote to control volume, and it's very easy to program during initial setup.
benjamin  Aug 30, 2017
A
You should be able to. I do it with my century link prism box. You plug it into the IR slot on back of tv and adjust tv settings I recall.

The playbase plays the audio from your source. You will able to use you remote to control the volume.
sujinder  Aug 30, 2017

You can program playbase to work with volume control of any infared remote. if your direct tv is infared (you point it at the tv to change volume) then it will work.

Q
I measured the width of the base for my tv (Samsung UN55JS700DF) and it's 32'', but it doesn't seem like this would fit on the PLAYBASE. Is that an accurate assessment?

Thanks for your question. I would say so. If you TV has pedestal feet that are wide enough apart it could work there too. Here are the specs from the "Details" tab: Mounting Options: The Sonos PlayBase can rest under the pedestal stand or between the pedestal feet of your flat-panel TV.

Q
Does the playbase REQUIRE access to a network? I'm interested in it for the sound quality and plan to plug it directly into my blu-ray player. The home I'll be using it in is completely off the grid with no broadband access. I do have an iphone if that is needed for setup and also have a spare router that I can use if necessary, but other than lte access on my phone, I have no internet access. I don't plan to use it for streaming music - only for producing good sound when I watch movies.

You can use the Playbase as a stand alone system through the optical cable. The volume can be adjusted with buttons on the unit, but I don't think you are able to access the Night Mode or Dialogue Enhancement without your phone being connected. That being said, you might be able to connect your phone to the unit with a "dummy" Wi-Fi from your router without needing internet. You probably need internet to use the TruPlay feature, though, since this goes through their algorithm to work. It's a great sounding and very functional speaker on its own, but it would be a shame to miss out on these cool features.

Will the Xfinity X1 remote control work with this product to control the volume ?

Even though I use Xfinity for my cable provider I use the TiVo Bolt for my cable box. I can tell you that the TiVo remote works fantastic with the playbase.

Q
Will the Sonos Playbase turn on automatically when the Tv is turned on?
rod  Jan 15, 2018

A
Yes, the Sonos software is excellent, will give you the option of "following" the television when the TV is powered on.
keith l  Jan 15, 2018
A
When you have a direct audio output cable from the TV (or cable box) to the Playbase, the answer is yes. It senses the TV audio and switches to that source. The cable has to be an optical cable, so check your TV first beforehand.
robert  Jan 15, 2018
A
Yes the Playbase comes on automatically when the TV turns on and goes into Standby on its own after the TV is turned off.
daniel  Jan 15, 2018
A
Yes, it turns on when the TV is turned on.
matthieu  Jan 15, 2018

yes, it is seamless

Q
Will this fit under a Samsung UN55KS8000?
anthony  Apr 04, 2017

A
Thanks for your question. Yes it looks like it will. Your TV has 2 1/2 inches clearance on the stands. The PLAYBASE is 2 5/16 inches high so it is very close. Hope this helps.
