Crystal-clear highs, distinct mids, and deep bass

Definitive pairs a 1" pure aluminum dome tweeter with a 6-1/2" woofer for accurate reproduction of the voices and instruments in your music. The woofer uses Definitive's BDSS (Balanced Double Surround System) design for accurate response across a wide frequency range. A pressure-coupled, racetrack-shaped radiator reinforces the output of the woofer, for overall bass that's equivalent to that of a 10" woofer. (Pretty cool for an outdoor speaker that's sized to fit under roof eaves.) You'll get deep lows to round out the sound of your favorite tunes.

Did you know?

Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. For more information and helpful tips, check out this article from Definitive's website about conditioning your speakers.

Product Research

Overview: The Definitive Technology AW series all-weather outdoor speaker allows you to enjoy your music outdoors in domestic or commercial applications. The AW series all-weather outdoor speaker utilizes specially developed materials and components to achieve a high level of durability, dependability, and sound quality.

Note: This speaker is sold individually.

Driver Technology

Pressure Coupled Radiator Design: The AW series outdoor speaker provides clear, high-definition sound by pressure-coupling a BDSS technology driver to a racetrack-shaped mid/bass radiator cleverly placed on the opposite side of the enclosure. This technique offers a total bass radiating area greater than an 8-inch woofer to belt out powerful bass that fills outdoor areas.

BDSS Technology: Definitive Technology's Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) driver offers a wide-bandwidth accurate frequency response, broad dispersion, low distortion, and detail retrieval; so you hear more the music with greater accuracy and enjoyment. BDSS drivers incorporate the following design features.

  • Balanced Double Surrounds: The speaker's balanced double surrounds support the cone at two points to provide better mechanical stability for longer, more linear excursion, and improved damping to suppress parasitic cone resonance.
  • Mineral-Filled Polymer Cone: The speaker features a deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cone engineered using sophisticated 3D modeling techniques for wide range performance.
  • Waveguide: The cone's integrated waveguide smoothes off-axis response for broad, even dispersion and better imaging.
  • High Temperature Voice Coil: The driver's high temperature, oversized, lightweight vented voice coil offers improved power handling and quick transient response. The voice coil is also lengthened to increase linearity and lower distortion.
  • Magnet Structure: The driver's magnetic system is optimized by finite element analysis to maximize magnetic flux in the gap for high efficiency and linear excursion.
  • Die-Cast Alloy Basket: The die-cast alloy basket minimizes ringing and vibration while the open area minimizes back wave reflection.

Drivers: The Definitive Technology AW6500 features a 6-1/2" BDSS driver coupled to a 5-1/2" x 10" (racetrack) pressure-driven low-bass radiator, and a 1" pure aluminum dome tweeter.

Break-In Period: The AW series outdoor loudspeakers will sound good right out of the box; however, an extended break-in period of 20-40 hours or more of playing is required to reach full performance capability. The break-in period allows the suspensions to work in and results in full bass, a more open midrange, and smoother high frequency reproduction.

Enclosure Design

Polystone Non-Resonant All-Weather Enclosure: The Definitive Technology AW6500 features a fully sealed (air and water tight) design, aluminum grilles, and rugged PolyStone enclosure, which allow it to be fully exposed to the elements and still reliably deliver their indoor speaker sound quality for years of outdoor listening enjoyment.

Note: The AW series speakers utilize special components and material for outdoor use. However, you will achieve the longest life of the speaker by positioning it to minimize direct exposure to the elements as much as possible.

Available Colors: The Definitive Technology AW6500 comes in either a Black or White (paintable) finish.

Binding Posts: The AW6500 is equipped with a pair of gold-plated, 5-way binding posts to attach your receiver's speaker wire.

Mounting Options

Mounting Bracket: The AW6500 outdoor speaker features an integrated galvanized steel mounting bracket and unique enclosure shape which allow a full 360-degrees of rotation for maximum placement flexibility. The AW outdoor speaker, using the integrated mounting bracket, can be oriented horizontally or vertically. The mounting bracket allows you to mount the speaker to an outdoor wall or under the eve of your home. The integrated mounting bracket can also be used as horizontal stand, if you want to simply place the speaker on a table or shelf. The mounting bracket is also removable, if you one to place the outdoor speaker in a vertical position on a shelf or table.

Note: The AW speaker can be mounted vertically or horizontally, but remember to always point the speaker in such a way as to allow water to roll off the driver cone and/or low bass radiator.

Placement: Position the AW series loudspeaker as close as possible to the area where you will be listening to it. Pointing the active driver baffle towards the listener while the low-bass radiator side faces the wall or ground gives you the ideal balance of clear mids, extended highs, and low-end bass even in the tough acoustic conditions of the outdoors. The AW speaker has a very wide dispersion pattern; however, if you are trying to cover a very large area, you will be better off using multiple pairs of AW speakers in order to achieve and even distribution of sound. With multiple pairs you will avoid having areas where the sound is tool loud and others where the sound is not loud enough. One pair of AW series loudspeakers will cover approximately 200-400 square feet of listening area at moderately loud levels. Try to point the speaker directly at the listening area.

I want to put a pair under the pool deck which is four feet off the ground not to be seen but heard or felt.I wonder how the sound would be,any answers.?

I have these on my back porch but mounted on the ceiling , they sound awesome !! Look great !! I think they would be fine under ur deck
[ David  May 04, 2021 ]
I think that's an "it depends". My speakers are awesome mounted on an exterior wall facing the patio and seating area with no obstructions at all. Given that, putting them under a deck, assuming it's wood, might impede the sound volume and clarity somewhat if the listening area is muted by the deck. In other words, the sound would have to get "through" or "around" the structure. Also, the direction the speakers are facing could also impact the sound quality and dispersement of it. If the sound has to get through or around the deck, it must then get to the listener, meaning if you're in the pool, the sound would have to get through the deck and get to the ears of those in the pool. Kind of like listening to a speaker from another room. The speakers handle a lot of volume and are crystal clear, so they may work fine, but I assume there would be some degradation of sound. You might want to try a radio or blue tooth speaker under the deck to see how it impacts the sound before you buy. My recommendation is to mount them above teh deck to eliminate any obstruction to teh sound. With all that said, we are totally enjoying our Definitive Technology AW6500 speakers on our patio! They are holding up perfectly in the elements!
[ ERIC  May 04, 2021 ]
It can be heard for sure when it's blocked but certainly not as clean and clear as when it's unobstructed and aimed at the listener. I have mine mounted up near the ceiling in my cabana and love them. You're paying for sound quality. Don't hide and dampen that. Just my .02
[ AARON  May 04, 2021 ]
I'm very impressed with the sound of these especially for the price.
[ Thomas  May 04, 2021 ]
Confused on what is considered the depth of the speaker. Is it the distance from the bracket that mounts on the wall to the face of the speaker?
[ Michael  Mar 13, 2019 ]
2 answers
The depth should be the total projection from whatever surface it is attached.
[ A  Mar 13, 2019 ]
Speaker depth. I can measure depth with bracket later and report back.

No, it's wired only.
[ Andrew  Mar 09, 2017 ]
These are not a powered speaker with bluetooth ability. I have these hooked up to a stereo receiver that has wired speaker connections. One thing I can tell you is that these speakers sound awesome. I would purchase them again in a heartbeat. I have recommended them to a couple of friends who have bought them also.
[ TODD  Mar 02, 2017 ]
No, hard wired
[ Christopher  Mar 01, 2017 ]
Not bluetooth, you need wires.
[ SUSIE  Mar 01, 2017 ]
No Bluetooth on this one. I can be connected to an amplifier with Play-Fi which would allow you with the application downloaded and connected to your wifi to play music from pandora, Spotify , phone, servers etc all controlled from your phone. They are well built and sound great but are not Bluetooth. There are Bluetooth patio speakers like the Sound Appeal Wireless Bluetooth Weatherproof Speakers ( 6.50 Inch) that cost $199.00 but are not as loud as these connected to an amplifier.
[ NESTOR M  Mar 01, 2017 ]
No, this is not a Bluetooth speaker. You would connect standard speaker wires from a receiver to make them work.
[ EDDY  Mar 01, 2017 ]
No, hard wired great speakers
[ ROBERT  Mar 01, 2017 ]
Can these speakers be mounted horizontally? Thanks Jimmy
[ Jimmy  Mar 26, 2015 ]
13 answers
[ DARNELL G  Apr 17, 2015 ]
Yes. Mine are mounted horizontally and work quite well.
[ MICHAEL  Mar 27, 2015 ]
Yes. Vertical or Horizontal mounting.
[ CRAIG  Mar 27, 2015 ]
Can't see why not
[ THOMAS M  Mar 26, 2015 ]
Yes these speakers can be mounted horizontally. That is how i have them mounted on my pool house.
[ BRIAN C  Mar 26, 2015 ]
I mounted mine horizontally on pvc stands for portability. I faced the bass down at about a 45 deg angle but can be easily adjusted or rotated in the mounting brackets that are included. We love ours.
[ JAC  Mar 26, 2015 ]
Absolutely - Mine were initially set that way and I ended up moving it to vertical position - but it can be.
[ MARC  Mar 26, 2015 ]
Absolutely... Just have the subwoofer side facing a wall/ceiling for optimum effect..
[ AJEET  Mar 26, 2015 ]
absolutely. That is how I have mine installed.
[ JON  Mar 26, 2015 ]
Yes, I have them mounted horizontally.
[ Jay  Mar 26, 2015 ]
I'd say yes but you should take into consideration that the bass cone is in the back and is better reflecting off a wall.
[ PATRICK  Mar 26, 2015 ]
Yes they can. My speakers are mounted horizontally to my house.
[ DOUGLAS A  Mar 26, 2015 ]
Yes they can. They sound the best if you can get the base speaker facing a solid surface. Ie under your ages.
[ Corey  Mar 26, 2015 ]
Can these speakers be connected to a digital music source like an iPad?
[ Peter  Nov 27, 2014 ]
8 answers
No, they must be connected to a receiver using speaker wire. They are very clear sounding and great for all weather.
[ DAVID W  Dec 03, 2014 ]
I have my speakers connected to a Denon receiver. I plug my iPhone into my receiver and listen to my music without any problem.
[ MICHAEL  Dec 01, 2014 ]
Although very efficient these speakers are going to require some amplification to truly perform to the level that they are capable of delivering. If you have an amplifier/receiver and connect your iPad to the receiver than yes, otherwise I think you may be disappointed with the sound quality. If you don't want to run an amp/receiver I would recommend a self-powered option. Good luck!
[ CHRIS  Dec 01, 2014 ]
I have mine connected to an iPad through the Sonos connect amp. There may be other ways to connect but this works very well for me.
[ Corey  Dec 01, 2014 ]
They need to first be connected to an amplifier.
[ CRAIG  Nov 30, 2014 ]
Hi Peter, They are not self powered so must be connected to a receiver first. I bought a $300 receiver that includes "AirPlay". The speakers are connected to the receiver and I can connect my iphone to the receiver wirelessly using AirPlay. The receiver is also connected to my wifi network so I can play music on my computer to that rig instead of my computer speakers.
[ PATRICK  Nov 30, 2014 ]
Not directly. I Hard wired the outdoor speakers to a receiver inside my house, running the wires around the dryer vent. I attached an Airport Extreme to the receiver so I can control everything from my iPhone, iPad, or Powerbook from outside.
[ THOMAS M  Nov 30, 2014 ]
Yes. But you would still need something to power them as they are not self powered. So the ipad would connect to Aux of amp or receiver and then that connects to speakers.
[ ARNOLD  Nov 30, 2014 ]
Are these dual voice coil ?
[ cornell  Apr 25, 2021 ]
3 answers
Not sure if I can help you, but the specifications refer to voice coil (singular). They do say it is enhanced length and high temperature. I replaced my Klipsch speakers of same size with these. I love my Klipsch, but was talked into these. I am pretty happy after 2 seasons, but would buy the 20 year old Klipsch if they were still made to the same specs. I did a test with a very discerning listener friend. These speakers look so similar to the Klipsch that I didn't mention that I got new ones, and he commented on how much he liked the sound of my speakers- thinking they were the old Klipsch. Good luck with your purchase.
[ Dana  May 01, 2021 ]
I don't think so but I will let the experts at Crutchfield confirm. What I can tell you is they sound fantastic. I have them mounted on the outside of my house and driving them with an older onkyo amp (50 wpc) and they fill the entire backyard with ground sound. Surprisingly good base response but still maintaining excellent midrange and highs.
[ THOMAS  Apr 25, 2021 ]
These speakers are not dual voice coil (DVC).
[ JASON  Apr 25, 2021 ]
Using about 60 ft of speaker wire per speaker from Sonos amp, is 14 gauge ok for this?
[ Dave  Dec 24, 2020 ]

Which Sonos amp? The new one has a lot more power.
[ David  Dec 25, 2020 ]
Should be plenty.
[ SHARON  Dec 24, 2020 ]
I have connected these to a couple different receivers in my home but none have enough juice to power the speaker. I am going to buy a new stereo receiver for it. What am I looking for in terms of power? Thanks?
[ Michael  Sep 22, 2018 ]
3 answers
I bought an onkio don't remember the power but I spent about 700 to 800 on the unit. And these speekers sound great
[ A  Sep 22, 2018 ]
Hi Michael, Please know I have these same speakers out by my pool and they are being driven comfortably by a SONOS Amp rated at 55W per channel. As I recall these speakers were fairly efficient and accordingly not requiring an amp/receiver with a lot of power. Have you spoken with tech support at CRUTCHFIELD? I have found them to be very helpful. If I were going to "step up" to a more powerful Amp without spending "an arm and a leg" I'd look at YAMAHAs. Hope this helps. Good LucK! Joe C.
[ JOSEPH  Sep 22, 2018 ]
I have these speakers connected to a Denon AVR-1913 (125W/90W) and have been very pleased with the sound.
[ LESLIE  Sep 22, 2018 ]
Once mounted with the brackets, are the speakers in a fixed position, or is the position changeable? I'm just thinking about the mounting position on my house for best sound. Thanks all.
[ JON  Feb 10, 2018 ]
7 answers
Once mounted you can rotate the speaker to get them in the best sounding position that is best for you and lock them down in that position with the locking knobs on both sides
[ CHESTER R  Feb 10, 2018 ]
[ Harold  Feb 10, 2018 ]
The speakers can be adjusted left to right if mounted vertically, or up and down if mounted horizontally. Great speakers.
[ Kyle  Feb 10, 2018 ]
The speakers are not fixed, you can adjust after mounting.
[ William  Feb 10, 2018 ]
Once you mount the brackets, the brackets are fixed. You can swivel the speaker on the fixed bracket from where the speaker mounts to the bracket.
[ JB  Feb 10, 2018 ]
I have a pair mounted under the eave of the house. They can be rotated up to 180 degrees.
[ Steve  Feb 10, 2018 ]
You are able to adjust the position. Loosen the screw caps on each end and you will be able to aim the speakers either up/down (if you mounted them horizontally, or left/right (if you mounted vertically. Hope this helps.
[ Steve  Feb 10, 2018 ]
Can anyone recommend a networked receiver that will take full advantage of the 200w per channel that these speakers can handle? This entire system will be for our new pool area. The receiver will be inside the home, so I need network connectivity to control it via an app. Thank you.
[ Antonio  Aug 19, 2017 ]

I am using a Denon AVR-s900w which controls my 5.1 surround in my living room and offers a second zone for my outdoor speakers. I am using an ON-Q volume control with impedance matching. The DT 6500 have gained performance as they have gone through the break in period. Watts per channel with the S900W is rated at 125. I've been happy with the performance of my speakers with these settings.
[ JOSEPH  Aug 21, 2017 ]
Can you use only one speaker or do you need two?
[ chris  May 01, 2017 ]
8 answers
You can use one but for a more balanced sound it's better to have Two.
[ ERVIN  May 02, 2017 ]
You need 2 for stereo, you only get mono or 1 channel with one.
[ CARY L  May 01, 2017 ]
I have 2. Most a/v recievers will "need" at least 2. I think it is technically possible to just connect one, but i don't hink you'd want to do that - that's just no stereo.
[ LEANDRO  May 01, 2017 ]
Hi, I guess it depends on how loud you want to have it. You can use one speaker if your looking for background music maybe a little more than that. I have 2 of them and the sound is impressive( I prefer louder music plus it would depend on what type of music you are listening too). I like more bass also so 2 was my choice. I guess one could work well. Hope this helps.
[ Chris  May 01, 2017 ]
Depends on your set up. I use sets of two, however if only one is needed it should work well.
[ Engilberto Javi  May 01, 2017 ]
Depends on your audio source. One signal, one speaker. If you have a stereo source with left and right channels, you might want two speakers, one for the left channel and one for the right. If you have a monaural source, you'd only need one speaker. Fancy Dolby surround systems would require even more speakers. I have a traditional stereo system so I'll bought two. Hope your hat helps.
[ Charles  May 01, 2017 ]
[ ANTONIO  May 01, 2017 ]
I purchased two and placed them on our deck. Based on the location of both however it's really like using just one in two different areas and they work great.
[ Brent  May 01, 2017 ]
I live in Michigan where (surprise) it can get really cold and snowy during the winter. Should I detach these speakers in the late fall and bring them indoors during the harshest part of the winter or can they stay outdoors 24/7/365?
[ George  Mar 09, 2015 ]
6 answers
George I live in Michigan and I always take these down around the end of October and store them for the winter
[ JERRY  Mar 10, 2015 ]
to be on the save side bring them in I do and I live in Texas Mike
[ MIKE W  Mar 10, 2015 ]
George, I live in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Foothills in California and we get cold weather and snow every year, so I always take my Definitive Technology 6500s down in November and keep them inside and put them back out in late March. It only takes a few minutes and I'm sure preserves the speaker components. I'm sure you could leave them out; however, I'm sure it would shorten any speakers life.
[ JAMES R  Mar 10, 2015 ]
I would recommend taking them down during the off season when not in use. I live in North Carolina, winters nowhere near as harsh as Michigan. Take mine down 1st of November & put them back up in May for pool season.
[ JOHNNY  Mar 10, 2015 ]
I live near Chicago. I bring them in for the winter. They are very easy to detach from the brackets (no tools required). My last speakers were outside for 10 years though and were not nearly as good as these.
[ WILLIAM  Mar 10, 2015 ]
I live in nebraska so we have the same climate..I leave mine outside all year and they still sound great..but mine are underneath my house eave on my deck, which also has a roof on it, so they dont get sunlight, wet, sun exposure etc.
[ NICK  Mar 10, 2015 ]
So these need to wired into the wall then? We would need to pay for the speaker system to be prewired when building a house? What about to add a couple of rock speakers from this site... can they be wireless or wire needs to be run underground?
[ Cworkman  Sep 03, 2014 ]
2 answers
They are wired speakers and if you are using them outside you should use ground rated speaker wire. Wired still is the way to go for the best sound quality, and these speakers are a great choice for outdoors.
[ MATTHEW  Sep 06, 2014 ]
These speakers need to be wired.
