Our take on the Definitive Technology Mythos SSA-50

Definitive Technology's Mythos SSA-50 gives you surprisingly three-dimensional home theater sound when installing a complete five-speaker system isn't an option. Definitive's Spatial Array™ technology precisely controls which sounds are played by each of the nine drivers, creating the illusion that you are surrounded by five separate high-performance speakers. The result is a wide listening area with excellent performance to the sides, in which you can clearly pinpoint action happening to your left and to your right. The SSA-50 doesn't depend on bouncing sound off of your walls, unlike some sound bar speakers, so it works well in just about any room. And it's designed to perform equally as well with your favorite music as it does with your Hollywood blockbusters.

High-tech speaker design produces detailed surround-like effects

The SSA-50 houses nine total drivers — five for the front soundstage and four to handle the rear channels. Three of those drivers have a pure aluminum dome tweeter mounted in front of the speaker cone, for extended highs that reveal nuance and shimmer without a trace of edginess. And Definitive's BDSS driver technology helps increase the tiny speakers' output without increasing the size of the enclosure. Connect it to a multi-channel receiver and you've got a simple, high-performance home theater solution that's sure to impress.

Did you know?
Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. For more information and helpful tips, check out this article from Definitive's website about conditioning your speakers.

Sound quality is spot on. Incredible depth right out of the box. As with other reviews...mounting hardware is not novice friendly and does not allow for banana clips.

Excellent sound

Mark from Hilton, NY on 2/9/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent sound for a sound bar type speaker! Recently moved into a new house with an open floor plan and my wife didn't want to have speakers all over so I started looking for a sound bar to replace my 5.1 system. I was a little upset at the thought of going the sound bar route as I had just purchased a new sub about a year ago and lets be honest, not many sound bars can adequately replace a surround sound system. I started looking into powered sound bars, stopped in to a couple of my local a/v stores and spent hours reading reviews of various products that more often than not ended with "disappointing sound for the money". Finally got on Crutchfield and started chatting with Andy, explaining my situation and all the components that I had and asked him for his recommendation, the rest is history. I will honestly say that I am very impressed with the sound quality and how it fills my large open floor plan. The sound bar is a bit bigger than most and rather heavy (north of 30lbs) but these weren't issues for me at all, it still fit on my mantle without a problem. Only drawback to this sound bar is the mount that attaches to the back (needed for both wall mounting and standing on mantle/table). The mount makes it a pain to connect the speaker wires, not a show stopper at all. Be sure to calibrate it according to DT's recommendations. Extremely happy with this sound bar, and I highly recommend it. Thanks for the recommendation Andy!

Pros: Excellent sound quality for a sound bar style speaker Great bang for the buck over a powered sound bar Fills large room without an issue Use with existing components (receiver, sub, etc)

Cons: Mount makes it a little bit of a pain to connect speaker wires

This is the best 5-channel passive soundbar available. It can't replace 5 separate speakers, but if you must compromise then this is it.

Pros: Sweet highs, convincing surround effects, high end looks

Cons: Speaker terminals are a pain, literally

Terrific Sound!

Chris from Gainesville, FL on 10/18/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thoroughly enjoying this new soundbar with my new home theater setup. While there is still some tweaking to do, the sound is incredibly crisp, clear, and has lots of depth. It works well in the room it's in, even with the vaulted ceiling. And paired with the subwoofer, finally getting true cinema sound when watching movies now. Even though this soundbar is not "new" (i.e., it's older tech) it handles everything I've thrown at it so far from newer components. Could not be happier!

Pros: Sound is superb Looks great

Cons: Mounting bracket -- must be used even if soundbar placed on shelf. Attach speaker wires first, thread through hole in bracket, then attach bracket to soundbar (this was great advice from previous reviews).

Very well built, good sound however

Charles from Burnsville, MN on 10/1/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sound bar is very well constructed however, more time and thought should have been given to connectivity for wall hanging installation . Even with concealed cables, it's a bit of a challenge to get all 5 connections through the bracket and hang the bar on the slotted clips. Sound quality is good and I am satisfied with it.

Pros: Looks, quality and sound

Cons: Hanging on a wall is a challenge.

Very Clear Sound

Tim from Rio Rancho, NM on 9/29/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound from this speaker has the clearest sound I've ever had on a speaker(s) hooked up to use with a television/movies. Much better than any center speaker I had when I was running 5.1 systems. I'm using a Yamaha RX V473 Receiver with the SSA-50, and I did have to adjust the V473 settings, as recommended SSA-50 instruction book. You will need a sub-woofer to use in conjunction with the SSA-50. The sub-woofer strengthens the robustness of the SSA-50. Regarding 'surround sound' I've only achieved anything sort of like surround sound with music. Movies sound great with the SSA-50, but don't expect a replication of a whole 5.1 or other surround sound system...the SSA-50 is, after all, a sound bar. But the dynamics of the sound are great. Also, I upgraded my HDMI cables to the latest modern ones, and that made a big difference in the clarity of the sound. Wires do matter. Of course, as other reviews have mentioned, the wire hook up in the back is a little tedious. I use the speaker sitting on a table, rather than the wall, but I think putting it on the wall would be another tedious task.

Pros: clear and dynamic sound

Cons: make sure you have top rated wires to get the most out of the speaker

Wife Approved High-Quality Sound

Ken Harget from Spring Grove, PA on 1/16/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really wanted a set of Mythos towers, but I wasn't allowed. My wife gave me the okay to buy a soundbar only... so I bought the best soundbar I could afford. I paired this with an Onkyo TX-NR747 and I can honestly say I am blown away. This is more than I could ever need. My room is 15'x22' and it opens to the dining room and kitchen and the SSA-50 fills this space. It get's loud... really loud, but it's crystal clear while doing so. Watching a movie in Dolby Surround, sometimes I sear I can hear things behind me as if I had speakers there. The thing is a work of art too, heavy... extruded aluminum enclosure.. painted gloss black... BDSS drivers.. pure aluminum tweeters... it's spectacular. I can't even explain the way this single unit creates the illusion of being so much bigger, you simply must hear it. Even my audiophile friends were impressed. I currently have it paired with a Polk DPS-10 Subwoofer and plan to upgrade to a Definitive Technology Supercube 8000 in the future. I am very pleased with my purchase, and once again Crutchfield came through with shining colors... always A+ customer service.

Pros: It's like a piece of art.... My wife likes it! Words can't describe how this thing sounds

Cons: It's a pain in the behind connecting the wires to the binding posts, you will develop blisters... but it's so worth it.

Clear Crisp Sound

Burg from Lumberton NJ on 1/13/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This soundbar has excellent tonal quality. Great for movies and music. I set the left and right front and center channels to 0db. I'm running the left and right surround channels at +8db. Watching NFL football gave the illusion of people being all around me! With Sci-Fi and Adventure movies you are completely immersed in the action. The MYTHOS SSA50 can produce very high spls when used with a subwoofer and high quality A/V receiver.

Pros: Beautiful high gloss black aluminum. Great alternative to connecting individual speakers. Well written easy to follow instructions. Connect the speakers first then wall bracket.

Cons: I should have purchased the MYTHOS SSA50 a long time ago.

Worth It.

Crutchfield customer from Houston, TX on 12/20/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think the speaker sounds great. Replaced a Mirage omni sound bar that I also thought sounded good. I do like the SSA-50 better. As others have said, the mounting bracket is a pain. My suggestion would be to put the bracket over the holding screws so you can see how to hook the speaker wires. I opted to have the + - coming out toward the middle of the posts. The danger is that you could have the wires touching at least in part. If you are careful not to strip too much and insert the stripped part all the way you should be good

Myths SSA-50

BillD from florissant, MO on 3/3/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great 5.1 surround sound for a sound bar. A good subwoofer is a must. Overall, probably not as good as having individual speakers but better than I expected. Set up was easy although the mounting bracket can be a challenge. Suggest connecting the wires first and then the bracket.

Pros: Good sound quality, Great looks, Easy setup

Cons: Mounting bracket wire hole should be bigger.

Is there a soundbar better?

Effero from Austin, Texas on 12/12/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This soundbar is used in my smaller media room and it is everything I wanted and more. Sound is detailed and I am surprised that the surround sound is as true as it is. It is driven by my older Rotel RSX-1057 along with a Definitive Technology SuperCube 4000. Needless to say I am more than impressed.

Pros: Great detailed sound! Same Def Tech sound I love grown to love through the years.

Cons: Nothing. I does everything I want it to.

Please watch out about the installation

MN from New York, NY on 12/22/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, the sound is great (+5 stars). This only partially made up for the incredible hassle of setting the soundbar up (-3 stars), as some of the other reviews have mentioned. A mounting bracket must be used whether you mount or stand the speaker The process of installing the mounting bracket onto the speaker is (in concept) pretty easy: Slide two screws on the back of the speaker onto the mount. The problem is that on the bracket the cutout for the speaker wires is ridiculously tiny. Ridiculous meaning that both the upper and lower speaker jacks were partially covered by the bracket! It took me a good half hour of cursing before I could get the speaker wire connected and the bracket attached. Finally, since i was not mounting the soundbar to the wall, I had to connect an L bracket to the mounting bracket -- a foot then screwed into the L bracket. Connecting the two brackets required screwing in the screw onto a nut that was "welded" to the main bracket. This nut broke off almost immediately -- on both L brackets. As a result, both L brackets are only wobbly connected to the mounting bracket. If the sound wasn't great, I would have returned this soundbar in a flash.

Pros: sound

Cons: extremely poor mount design and build

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First unit arrived damaged. Crutchfield replaced immediately. Packaging is marginal. Looks beautiful great match for plasma displays, heavy solid feeling, Sound is OK average. No real surround just a nice clear single speaker.

Pros: Crutchfield's legendary support & response, Great looks, Solid Construction.

Cons: Inadequate packaging, Average sound for price.

Mythos SSA-50 Sound bar

Jim from Plano,TX on 8/12/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent 5.1 surround sound for a sound bar. One limitation encountered with my Onkyo TX-NR828 receiver is that I cannot take advantage of all of the Audessy features that include DSX and Dynamic Volume because Definitive Technology advises against using speaker setup applications such as Audessy EQ. Onkyo's implementaton of the Audessy features requires use of EQ in order to implement DSX and Dynamic Volume.

I bought the ssa5 and the sound quality sucks so after do research I bout the ssa-50 and the sound quality is better than I expected. It's being powered with a pioneer elite vsx-42 and a velodine 12 sub. All I can say the sound and surround spund I get is superb. Wall mounting is a little work but not to difficult

Pros: Spund quality , styling

Cons: Wall mount

Definitive Technology Mythos SSA-50 Installed in Cabinet

GeneM from Port St. Lucie, FL on 5/23/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks good, sounds okay. I bought this unit because it is a perfect fit inside my gloss black Sony Style TV stand and matches the finish so well that you do not even notice that it is there. I looks like it is a part of the stand (I did have to devise a mounting method). It is powered by a Denon 1912 receiver which also feeds an older 90W, eight -inch cone subwoofer. This unit is located in a central common area in the house where appearance was a big factor. I have a separate dedicated home theater for more serious movie and TV watching.

Pros: Looks very nice in my installation. A+ for aesthetics. Sounds in mid-range are clear and distinct.

Cons: Sound is not nearly as full as almost any half-way decent tower speakers. Surround sound effects are minimal. Sound bars in general are a significant compromise if you are looking for home theater type surround sound.

Mythos on a Denon AVR1912

Josh from Sherwood, Oregon on 5/4/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have installed the SSA5-50 in our family room, 16ft wide by 22ft wide, and it sounds wonderful. Clear and crisp sound on the five channel configuration from the Denon AVR-1912; 90-watt per channel discrete amplifier. I typically run the bar at about -35 to -40 db depending in the source and is more than enough to fill the room. Bass is significantly lacking as expected, but is complimented very nicely with the pro-sub 800. During install I would recommend installing speaker wire to the binding posts first then attaching the mounting bracket. This will greatly ease installation due to the confined space around the binding posts. Additionally, I have a 47" LCD sitting above the soundbar and the looks are aesthetically pleasing, so feel confident in going with this over the SSA-42 despite a less than 50" TV. You never know when you will go bigger, but you will never go smaller on the TV.

Pros: Compact size, power handling capability, quality construction, brand power.

Cons: Lack of room for installation at binding post, weight is significant, depth may cause issues for some.

Engineering Nightmare

Jim from Kensington, MD on 8/1/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Someday someone at Def Tech will have to explain the engineering nightmare they've created with their stupid mounting bracket for this speaker. I didn't question the brand, quality of speaker, or price. I wanted it and I bought it. I was prepared for the nightmare as I had done my due diligence reading others opinions about the bracket. When I finally was ready to install it, on a shelf not wall, i took the bracket out to my garage and chopped it up with my recip saw. By doing so I was able to use banana plugs and didn't compromise the bracket at all, at least for a shelf application. One would assume the the engineers at Def Tech would have figured this out and resolved it by now. Speaker-GREAT, Hardware-TERRIBLE!

Definitive Technology Mythos SSA-50

SA from Nashville on 2/8/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice sound, well made, provided best alternative to floor speaker system for our den. Flaw with design of wall bracket (only if used as stabilizing stand without attachment to wall): I choose to let soundbar sit below TV on shelf. The included wall bracket (attaches to back of speaker) should be used with included "feet" to stabilize speaker at desired angle. Unfortunately, if your speaker wire uses bannana cannot use the bracket...won't fit / won't work. Cut out for speaker wire not large enough in diameter to accomodate plugs. To utilize bracket, on shelf, you will need something besides straight banna plugs on speaker wire. Note, the space between speaker posts is extremely tight. Very nice sound...all in all...nice speaker

Overview: The Definitive Technology Mythos Solo Surround Array 50 (SSA-50) is a unique multichannel loudspeaker that provides a 5-channel surround sound experience from just one speaker. The Definitive Technology SSA-50 is the perfect surround audio solution when you are unable or unwilling to wire and place rear channel speakers in your room, but still want a home theater experience. The SSA-50 uses Definitive Technology's best drivers and tweeters for audiophile-grade sound quality so you can enjoy enveloping surround sound from a single speaker. The Mythos Solo Surround Array 50 features five discrete channels to connect to your 5.1-channel Dolby Digital receiver, so you don't need to run wire to five separate speakers. The Mythos SSA-4 can be wall- or shelf-mounted using the supplied hardware.

Driver Technology
Enclosure Design
Mounting Options

Driver Technology

Spatial Array: The Definitive Technology Mythos SSA-50 incorporates Spatial Array, a unique patented technology that optimizes the spatial presentation of five-channels to create the illusion that you are surrounded by five separate high-performance speakers. Spatial Array Surround technology uses subtle, but complex directional cues to completely free the sound from the speaker enclosure and convince your ear/brain listening mechanism that you are surrounded multiple speakers. Since Spatial Array technology does not depend on bouncing sound off walls, it works in virtually any room and set-up configuration. The SSA-50 uses Spatial Array technology on the front left and right speakers as well as the surround channels, so that you get big three-dimensional imaging from both stereo and multi-channel sources.

BDSS Driver Technology: The Front left, Front right, and Center channel drivers of the SSA-50 utilize Definitive's exclusive and patent-pending Balanced Dual Surround System (BDSS) technology. Speaker cones usually have one support point at the circumference of the cone (called the surround), but BDSS drivers have two support points or surrounds. This design suppresses cone resonance and promotes a longer, more linear cone motion for higher output, lower distortion and more accurate frequency response. As a result you will enjoy perfectly natural and lifelike timbre with crystalline clarity on voices, musical instruments ,and movie sound effects, even at high-volume levels.

Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeter: The Definitive Technology SSA-50's tweeter is a pure aluminum dome, which has been heat-treated to relax the crystal structure and then coated with a ceramic to produce extended highs. In order to keep the enclosure from being longer than popular sized video displays, Definitive engineers positioned the front channel tweeters in front of the drivers. While this is a commonly used space-saving technique, a tweeter placed in front of the driver usually interferes with the driver's sound waves. Using computer and physical modeling, Definitive engineers developed unique tweeter-housing geometry and venting that eliminates interference effects for audiophile-grade clarity, precision, and accuracy.

Drivers: The Definitive Technology Solo Surround Array 50 features three 4.5" BDSS drivers with axially-aligned 1.0" pure aluminum dome tweeters; two 4.5" BDSS high-output full-range drivers, and four 3.25" full-range high-output surround drivers.

Break-In Period: The Mythos SSA-50 will sound good right out of the box; however, an extended break-in period of 20-40 hours or more of playing is required to reach full performance capability. The break-in period allows the suspensions to work in and results in full bass, a more open midrange, and smoother high frequency reproduction.

Enclosure Design

Extruded Aluminum Enclosure: The SSA-50's enclosure is fabricated from aircraft-grade, hand-polished gloss black extruded aluminum, styled to perfectly match today's flat panel plasma and LCD TVs. Internal baffles and braces inside the enclosure eliminate interference effects between drivers and channels for true audiophile purity and maximum channel separation.

5-Way Binding Posts: The SSA-50  is equipped with 5 pairs (Front left, Front right, Center, Rear right, Rear left) of gold-plated, 5-way binding posts to attach your 5.1-channel home theater receiver's speaker wire.

Mounting Options

Placement: The Mythos Solo Surround Array 50 is designed for horizontal use only. The 5-channel loudspeaker can be positioned below or above your flat-panel television. The SSA-50 matches perfectly with 50-inch an larger flat-panel televisions.

Mounting: The Definitive Technology SSA-50 comes with easy-to-install mounting hardware that allow it to mount on the wall above or below your television. The Mythos SSA-50 comes with a wall mount bracket that allows direct mounting to a wall. The SSA-50 can also be mounted directly to select flat-panel TV swing out arm-style wall mounts, so that the speaker angle changes with the TV angle. It also includes hardware that allows you to place the speaker on the TV, on a shelf , or on a table-top (surface must be at least 5-inches deep).

Angle Adjustment: The Mythos Solo Surround Array 50 comes with two brackets and two feet which screw into the speaker's wall-mount bracket to stabilize the speaker and allows you to adjust the vertical angle when the system is placed on a flat horizontal surface. When you set the speaker down, the speaker will lean back and rest on these feet. By varying how far you screw in-and-out the feet, you can adjust the vertical angle of the speaker. It is recommended that you aim the center-speaker so that it aims directly towards the height of the listeners' ears.
