About the Definitive Technology Mythos Nine

Mount this versatile speaker next to your TV and enjoy rich sound

Definitive Technology's sleek Mythos Nine looks right at home next to today's flat-panel TVs. Its versatile design means you can use a pair for your home theater's main left and right speakers, or use one as a center channel. It features many of the same technologies found in Definitive's Mythos floor-standing speakers to provide a wide soundstage, pinpoint imaging, and superb realism in a slim, wall-mountable speaker cabinet. The Mythos Nine is sized to match up as a front left/right speaker with 50" or larger flat-panel TVs, or it works well as a center channel underneath a 42" or larger set.

High-tech drivers for exceptionally detailed sound

At the center of the cabinet are two 4-1/2" midrange drivers surrounding a 1" dome tweeter. Definitive's Balanced Dual Surround System (BDSS) driver technology helps increase the tiny speakers' output without increasing the size of the enclosure. The pure aluminum dome tweeter produces extended highs that reveal nuance and shimmer without a trace of edginess. Flanking the midranges are two 4-1/2" x 8" racetrack-shaped low bass radiators, which give the Mythos Nine better bass performance than you might expect from a slim, on-wall speaker.

Gorgeous aircraft-grade aluminum cabinet

The enclosure is made of black hand-polished aluminum for a sleek look that'll go well with most modern décors. Die-cast aluminum baskets, a resonance-free PolyStone baffle, and proprietary damping technologies built into the cabinet ensure clean sound.

Building a system

Put together a complete home theater system using Mythos on-wall speakers for your front three channels. Add on Definitive's Mythos Gem surround speakers for wraparound sound and SuperCube III subwoofer for high-impact bass. The Mythos Nine also makes a great center channel complement to Definitive's powerful Mythos STS SuperTower floor-standing speakers.

Did you know?
Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. For more information and helpful tips, check out this article from Definitive's website about conditioning your speakers.

Great all around

Crutchfield customer from Pinckneyville, IL on 8/12/2019

Highly impressed with the Mythos Nine! I'm using it as a Center Channel and this is definitely worth the money. I was looking for a Center Channel for clarity and bass and this is the one! The frequency response is great and it definitely made a difference for hearing the vocals. I mainly listen to music and if you're looking for a Center Channel for clarity and bass you won't be disappointed in the Mythos Nine.

Pros: Excellent frequency response

Cons: None

Great Value, Great Addition

Crutchfield customer from Sheffield Lake, OH on 7/24/2019

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Thanks to a sale price of $500 at Crutchfield ($200 lower than anywhere else), this center channel bellows out crystal clear human voices. I bought 3 Mythos 9's and use for left, right and center channels in a 9.1 set up with a 75" LG TV. I would say adding a subwoofer is a necessity if using for L/R channels. I set my crossover on the sub at 120hz rather than 100hz as suggested by the manufacturer. I was a little surprised that other reviews consider the bass response in this as acceptable.

Pros: Crystal Clear human voices make it a phenomenal choice for a center channel. Size of housing is elegantly small. Great build quality.

Cons: If using as a L/R and center channel combo, you must own a subwoofer. Do not come standard with an acceptable horizontal table mount. Probably should select optional horizontal stand.

Great product, great company

Crutchfield customer from Mastic, NY on 5/1/2019

The product was shipped the day it was ordered and came perfectly packaged. I own a pair of Mythos eights (front speakers) and a pair of Mythos sixes (rear speakers). The Mythos nine replaced my Mythos two center channel. Although the Mythos two is an excellent speaker, the Mythos nine shows quite a noticeable improvement over the Mythos two. Great speaker, great price and Crutchfield is an excellent company. My son has also bought products from Crutchfield and recommended them to me. Would definitely order from them again.

Pros: Couldn't have asked for more from a product or a company

Cons: None

This is my new center channel. Sounds great. Thinking about getting 2 more for L/R in dedicated home theater. Prior center didnt reach as deep into the bass. Actually seems to add weight to dialogue where appropriate. Think James Earl Jones' voice.

Versatility and Quality

Christopher from Eugene, OR on 4/9/2019

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Versatility, that's what the Mythos Nines are all about. I recently moved into a house with a built-in entertainment center that lacked space for my Definitive CS-9060 towers. Instead of a vertical cabinet I had 36" of horizontal space to work with for my L/R speakers (bad design, I know), but still wanted that Definitive sound to pair with my Denon AVR-X6300H. After a chat with my Crutchfield rep and an email exchange with Definitive I determined that the Mythos Nine was the way to go for my situation. Lucky for me Crutchfield had the Mythos Nines on sale so I ordered two of them and all I can say is wow! I own a bunch of other Definitive speakers so I can't say I was surprised, but I'm still impressed with the sound and the incredible build quality. I like them so much that I ordered a Mythos Ten for my center channel, and I'm making a small modification to the built-in to accommodate a Definitive SuperCube sub. Thank you Definitive for making such a great and VERSATILE speaker, and thank you Crutchfield for another great deal and awesome service!

Pros: Can be mounted horizontally or vertically, incredible build quality, that warm and rich Definitive sound

Cons: Mine are hidden behind a mesh cabinet door so people can't see how beautiful they are :(

Best Center Speaker I have ever had

Crutchfield customer from Centennial, CO on 2/18/2019

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This is the best center speaker I have ever had. The clarity it provides of voices without losing the depth of the other sounds is amazing. This is a fabulous speaker for the center channel. You add that to it's low profile and excellent looks, the Mythos Nine is a winner. This is the first low profile center speaker I have owned and surprisingly it out performs those larger center speakers I have had. If quality of sound and being able to hear voices clearly, this is the speaker for you.

Pros: Clarity and depth of sound, flexible mounting, aesthetics, low profile

Cons: Only possible con that I see is the length - it is a fairly long speaker.

Clearly Mythos

Matt from Prospect, KY on 1/26/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

One of the better 'small' platform centers available. My wife likes it as it hides very well compared to the traditional box and is aesthetically pleasing . Dialog is clear, which is a major plus and reason I own this speaker. My only qualm stems from the frequency response specifications claimed (38Hz - 30 kHz), I'd like to see that graph. The Audyssey setup cuts out at 80Hz which is inline with what my ear picked up on while auditioning it. As male speech ranges from 85 to 180Hz, female from 165 to 255Hz it fits the requirement nicely.

Pros: Aesthetics, Dialog is clear!

Cons: None

Product Research

Overview: The Definitive Technology Mythos Nine loudspeaker offers maximum versatility for your home theater and flat-panel entertainment system; it can be used as an on-wall Front, Center, or Surround speaker, or as a shelf-mounted center speaker. The Mythos Nine features a high-gloss aircraft-grade extruded aluminum enclosure with proprietary damping technologies to ensure total rigidity and perfectly accurate sound. It also features two high-definition BDSS 4-1/2 inch drivers pressure-coupled to two 4-1/2 x 8-inch (racetrack-shaped) planar low-bass radiators, and a 1 inch (25mm) ceramic-coated pure aluminum dome tweeter with an acoustically contoured faceplate for excellent high frequency extension, detail and smoothness.

Driver Technology

Pressure Coupled Radiator Design: The Mythos Nine contains two high-definition Balanced Dual Surround System (BDSS) 4-1/2" drivers (patent pending) that are pressure-coupled to two 4-1/2" x 8" racetrack-shaped planar low-bass radiators for deep bass extension. The bass roll-off of the Mythos Nine is smooth and controlled, allowing it to seamlessly blend with a powered subwoofer, such as Definitive's SuperCubes, for audiophile-grade home theater power and precision.

BDSS Technology: Definitive Technology's Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) driver offers a wide-bandwidth accurate frequency response, broad dispersion, low distortion, and detail retrieval; so you hear more the music with greater accuracy and enjoyment. BDSS drivers incorporate the following design features.

  • Balanced Double Surrounds: The speaker's balanced double surrounds support the cone at two points to provide better mechanical stability for longer, more linear excursion, and improved damping to suppress parasitic cone resonance.
  • Mineral-Filled Polymer Cone: The loudspeaker features a deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cone engineered using sophisticated 3D modeling techniques for wide range performance.
  • Waveguide: The cone's integrated waveguide smoothes off-axis response for broad, even dispersion and better imaging.
  • High Temperature Voice Coil: The driver's high temperature, oversized, lightweight vented voice coil offers improved power handling and quick transient response. The voice coil is also lengthened to increase linearity and lower distortion.
  • Magnet Structure: The driver's magnetic system is optimized by finite element analysis to maximize magnetic flux in the gap for high efficiency and linear excursion.
  • Die-Cast Alloy Basket: The die-cast alloy basket minimizes ringing and vibration while the open area minimizes back wave reflection.

Drivers: The two active 4-1/2" drivers surround a pure aluminum dome tweeter. The tweeter incorporates a newly designed voice coil, dome, and surround, as well as an acoustically contoured faceplate for unequaled high-frequency extension, detail, and smoothness.

Break-In Period: The Mythos Nine will sound good right out of the box; however, an extended break-in period of 20-40 hours or more of playing is required to reach full performance capability. The break-in period allows the suspensions to work in and results in full bass, a more open midrange, and smoother high frequency reproduction.

Enclosure Design

Extruded Aluminum Enclosure: The Mythos Nine enclosure is hand-polished gloss-black aircraft-grade extruded aluminum with proprietary damping technologies that ensure total rigidity. All components are mounted on a resonance-free PolyStone baffle. These construction technologies along with state-of-the-art drivers and tweeter serve to deliver high-quality sound with a wide soundstage, pinpoint imaging, high dynamic impact, and superb realism.

Connections

Binding Posts: The Mythos Nine is equipped with a pair of gold-plated, 5-way binding posts to attach your receiver's speaker wire.

Mounting Options

Mounting: The Mythos Nine comes with easy-to-install mounting hardware that allows you to hang the speaker on the wall below, above, or beside your flat-panel television in a vertical or horizontal orientation. Using the included mounting bracket, the Mythos Nine is engineered to be placed flush with the wall and close to the edge of your television while delivering realistic sound that is accurate, with lifelike imaging and clarity. A supplied adjustable foot and two self-adhesive rubber feet permit easy shelf mounting when the speaker is used in the horizontal center-channel format.

Angle Adjustment: The Mythos Nine has a bracket with foot which screws into the speaker's wall-bracket to stabilize the speaker and allows you to adjust the vertical angle when the system is placed on a flat horizontal surface. When you set the speaker down, the speaker will lean back and rest on this foot. By varying how far you screw in-and-out the foot, you can adjust the vertical angle of the speaker. It is recommended that you aim the center-speaker so that it aims directly towards the height of the listeners' ears.

The Mythos Nine contains two 4-1/2" drivers that are pressure-coupled to two 4-1/2" x 8" racetrack-shaped planar low-bass radiators, allowing the speaker to produce much deeper bass extension than you would expect. Q
I have mythos 9 center now and seem to have to turn it up to match the sts speakers I have. Would a 10 be a better match?
[ seattleike  Apr 01, 2015 ]

A
Hey Ike. Answering your question is tough because we don't know what's driving your speakers(Mythos Nine and STS towers are a great set). The Mythos 9 center is the big dollar item in my set and does a great job of centralizing and separating my movie sounds, voice and just music. If you can, use your HTR's calibration mic. Makes a huuuge difference. If that's already done try looking carefully at your wire connections, just one strand at one terminal can jack the entire balance(personal experience with one of my SR-8040BPs). I don't think the 10 will fix your problem. Perhaps your towers are close to your center and are matched well enough that your center listening point has expanded further than desirable. Try moving your STS's a bit out some or backing down on their outputs. Even with the calibration though, sometimes manually balancing your system is necessary and can take time and multiple tests. VR John
[ John  Apr 01, 2015 ]
A
I wouldn't think so - the Mythos 9 has 4-1/2" drivers which match the STS for even voicing- throwing in a 5" driver might be fine, but I would do what you are doing by adjusting the centers volume.
