Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Needed to add some boom! and this worked really well
Pros: easy setup
Cons: none that I could find
Definitive's ProSub 1000 brings all of your movie soundtracks and music to life with high-impact bass. A front-mounted 10" woofer works together with a pressure-coupled low bass radiator on the bottom of the enclosure to produce hard-hitting bass. The combined output of this pair is comparable to that of a traditional 12" woofer, but with greater speed, musicality, and control. The woofer is encased in an incredibly rigid basket engineered to hold the massive magnet structure and large voice coil in absolute alignment. And the non-resonant cabinet uses multiple internal bracings to make sure that you hear clean bass without sound-muddying vibrations.
A 300-watt amplifier and advanced crossover ensure accurate bass response. The continuously variable low-pass crossover allows you to precisely control the frequencies that your subwoofer handles. And the built-in high-pass crossover is a nice touch: it prevents your main speakers from overloading with low frequencies if you hook them up through the subwoofer's speaker-level outputs. A side volume control makes adjustments fast and easy, so you can seamlessly blend the ProSub 1000 in with the rest of your system.

Needed to add some boom! and this worked really well
Pros: easy setup
Cons: none that I could find
Great subwoofer delivers excellent base that feels the room.
Bass is not as deep as I thought it would be. The cabinet is seems to be made from cheep materials. Overall it just doesn't have the look of good audio equipment.
Cons: 1. Bass not as deep as I thought. 2. Construction material look cheap! 3. It's not very good for music, just a good rumble for movies!
This is a great little sub, better for movies than for music listening. Priced Right and It's got great low Bass but not as punchy as I was hoping. Matches up well with my Polk surround system. (Yamaha receiver, 110 high currant Watts /channel)
Pros: Size, price, side volume control, low frequency response
Cons: If I were to buy again, I would consider one with a more powerful amp
Definitive Tech. is my choice of speakers as I have them in my Home Theater and Living areas throughout my home. They produce the best sound both highs and lows. I purchased their (ProSub 1000) subwoofer as a replacement to a much larger and older Mirage subwoofer and I have to say the sound is much cleaner and the room now fills with the sort of bass sound that doesn't rattle and over power my other speakers but makes you feel the effects as the artist or producer intended. I personally like the side volume control which allows quick tuning as needed. Great for movies and music listening. Also, I have purchased from Crutchfield for several years and have found them to be among the best when it comes to meeting my audio and video needs. The best service by far of any similar type company.
Pros: Outstanding low bass from a rather small footprint subwoofer. Make sure to pair with the proper receiver so you obtain the full effects of this subwoofer.
This sub is the best addition to complete my system!!!
Pros: Just what I needed to complete my system
Efficient and easy to order.
The sub handles bass very well and I am happy with the level of sound it produces. It didn't get 5 stars because the grille had to be replaced because it raddled.
Great value here. I'm using this sub to fill the bottom for a pair of ADS 300c.
Pros: Integration Performance
Best bang for the buck available. I bought one on sale to try it, as I was not sold on this bass radiator technology. Extremely impressed right away, so I bought a second one. One year later, both subs are well broken in and produce mind blowing amounts of bass that can be felt from all four levels of my home. I have to turn the gains way down to just barely past the half way mark. I've never found a sub that did movies and music equally well because I strongly prefer sealed enclosures for music and you just plain need ported enclosures for proper movie effects. This bass radiator technology is not the holy grail, but it's closer to getting equally good results for both music and movies (movies are amazing, music is still just a little boomy but EQ settings can compensate). Prior to these I purchased the JL Audio Dominions which were amazing for music but just couldn't produce that movie magic. Ultimately I decided this room was mainly for videos and returned the JL. A single ProSub 1000 is more than adequate once broken in. These things will dance across the floor on hardwoods, so you will want to put some rubber feat on them. So impressed with the quality and the sound for this price. I have them configured with a Denon 6300h 11.2 setup running 11 "old school" Mirage Nanosat speakers and these subs do a great job of filling in the mid bass void that the small speakers can leave. I would buy these again and I hope they will never discontinue.
Pros: Sickening amounts of bass and does not seem to be working very hard.... plenty of reserve. Bass radiator technology used extremely effectively.
Cons: should have come with good "grippy" rubber feat to prevent walking clear across the floor during lively playback!
Sub sounds great for movies. Lacks defined, punch bass for music which is surprising as I expect sealed subs like this one to have well defined bass. This is my second sub, which I needed to minimize issues with nulls in our living room. It definitely helps, but not as much as I had hoped as my main listening positions happens to be where the bass frequencies experiences the largest dip in gain. In areas where nulls are not a problem, the subs sound thunderous! Like others have stated, having the gain knob on the side is huge benefit. It's cool that this sub provides high level inputs, but it does not apply to me as I have my subs connected to an A/V receiver. The sub has a clean, basic look which I prefer. Overall a good sub for the price, especially when you can find one cheaper than MSRP. I do have to mention that the open-box item I bought arrived with the wrong amp installed (it was an amp from the ProSub 800). However, Crutchfield immediately corrected this which speaks highly of their customer service!
Pros: Performs at its best with movies
Cons: Struggles to provide defined bass with music, which is odd for a sealed sub
Great product and support as always
Pros: Great unit
The sub sounds good but not as good as it should for the price. It's great for a small room but I think mine is a bit too large for this model.
Pros: Has decent bass for smaller rooms.
Cons: Not great at high volumes or with heavy bass driven music or soundtracks.
Love Def Tech
Pros: Not to big
The Definitive Technolgy subwoofer takes up much less space than than one it's replacing; both are 10" speakers. Bass is clean and not too overwhelming. I like the volume control on the right of the speaker instead of on the back. Nice subwoofer.
Unfortunately this is the only product from Definitive Technology I have ever purchased, so I cannot speak of the brand only this sub... which I seriously did not enjoy. Because this is a highly rated product, I was very shocked and I could not believe my ears! For the normal price it is seriously outmatched at this price point, and on sale is a little more palatable though still unremarkable. It misses the mark on all aspects except size, it is a small sub and you can basically hide this thing anywhere. Outside of that, I experienced rattling from the sub right out of the box like many customers have reported online. And I simply refuse to fix a brand new sub as a "fun" DIY project, its new after all... ease of use is easy, its a sub! Now on to the elephant in the room, performance. It is incredible how little you can hear this sub at 30 Hz, and below that mark forget about it!!! Yet somehow, they claim 18 Hz!? I am pairing this up with the Martin Logan Cadence Sound bar, and since this is a high end sound bar it comes with the ARC software by Anthem. The attached picture is the result of the sound analysis from my room. This test was performed using a laptop plus a calibrated mic provided with the sound bar. Take a look at that graph and decide for yourself!!! I would not recommend this product.
Cons: Performance Sound Quality Build Quality Price
Perfect upgrade from ProCinema 600 set. Fuller, richer sound, and non-obtrusive setup in small family room, which is how I like it. Probably have not used its full capability.
Impressive as all the other DT products. Paired with DT ProMonitor 1000s. Might have opted for 2 ProSub 800s in hindsight, but impressed how seamless this sub blends. Didn't realize how non-omnidirectional my old sub was. You almost wonder if it's on as the sound feels like it's coming from the mains...and then your cocktail on the end table starts rattling with the rest of the room.
Cons: I don't have two.
Love this sub. It brought my theatre room back to life.
So far, so good. I got this to go into a vintage system that needed some better bass and it is adjustable enough and stays tight enough on the very low end to do the job. Looks to be good quality for the money, time will tell, as I have only had it a few days now.
Pros: Good value for the money.
Cons: None yet.
Small size but works well in the room. I am still changing positions to determine the best sound. Gray SW for the price.
Pros: Ease of set up and location of volume control
Cons: None at this time.
Great sub for the money!! Fits perfectly in my room. Great but not overwhelming bass as well as mixes great with my other DefTech speakers.
Pros: Sound Size Mix with existing system
Cons: None so far
Using this sub with a Martin Logan Vision sound bar. I have had this hooked up for about 1 week. Construction of this sub is solid and hookup is simple. Performance wise, it compliments the sound bar well (which has good bass production on it's own). Bass production is solid with right volume setting. Too much volume (on sub) and it becomes muddy. Overall, for the money (got on sale) this sub certainly works well for my family room music & movie needs.
Pros: Solid construction Relatively small Easy placement Solid (not boomy) bass production
Cons: None at this time
I bought this subwoofer based on my Crutchfield adviser's recommendation. It worked well for about a year. Then it stopped working and started to emit a loud hum, even when not plugged in to any audio inputs. My system is not that powerful, and I never listen to anything loudly. Plus the system worked fine for a time. So the settings were fine. This subwoofer is just junk that failed. I was so disgusted that I didn't want to deal with it for a time. Now that I am finally throwing it out, I wanted to let others know that this subwoofer is a terrible disappointment. If you buy it anyway and it fails on you, it is your own fault as you have been warned.
Great sub for its size. Doesn't sound good a high volumes. Great for movies, not audiophile music.
It just works and works well
It is the perfect sub for any home theater IMO. Anything more is going to be little bang for your buck.
The sound is great and I give it 4 stars. Unfortunately due to it being only 31 lbs it kind "walks" on the wood floor and I can hear it rattling when it is almost lifting itself from the floor at medium to high volume during low frequency parts in movies. I am sure that issue came to life during pre production testing / QA of such light weight sub with down firing passive radiator, and DT failed to address by installing or offering air/oil/gel filled legs. I will try to load the top of it / strap to it some iron (30-50 lbs) or look into acoustic dampers / decouplers.
Pros: Great sound
easy to set up. Great bass reproduction without any distortion. Quality made product.
This replaces a ProSub 800 and adds wonderful depth to my 5.1 system. Much better sound, makes a big difference.
Pros: Adds wonderful depth to my system.
I purchased this sub to replace the original sub (which failed after 15 years) from my Boston Acoustics 5.1 system. The DT ProSub 1000 is a High quality sub at this price point. I had compared it to a similarly priced Polk and felt the DT was a finer product. It blends well with my remaining BA satellite and center channel speakers. I am using this in a 16x16 living room. I think for a larger room, you would need more (or better yet, two) subs.
Pros: Nice blend with remaining 5.1 speakers. Quality bass sound (not just a boom box).
Cons: Great for small to medium size rooms. Suggest two for large rooms.
Performs as advertised, reviewed. Love it! Nice tight clean low end for the size, fits perfectly in my limited space. Thank you Crutchfield once again.
Pros: Excellent sound, flexible, convenient adjustment, hook-ups.
Cons: A bit over priced.
The Definitive Technology Pro Sub 1000 offers crisp deep base. I am very happy with this addition to my current hi fi system
Pros: Tucks neatly into my furniture in located in my viewing room.
Very satisfied with this product. It is part of a 7.1 home surround system. It blended in nicely with my other speakers the minute I plugged it in.
Pros: Easy setup. Having a gain control on the side is a nice feature. Great value for the price.
Definitely notice a difference with it. Makes our movie theatre sound richer. Can't wait to get my second one
Pros: Rich sound
Only owned for 1 week but this is the best sounding sub I've owned. Replaced a Yamaha and Klipsch before that. I don't know how anyone could be let down be Definitive. Fills an 18' x 40' greatroom with amazing bass. Got it on sale from Crutchfield and shipping was uber fast as usual.
Pros: simple setup amazing sound
Set up in basement for 5.1 -- you can feel the bass even at moderate volume-- my first DT product--CRUTCHFIELD service is always great
Pros: Solid bass presence- volume knob on side of sub
Great sound, easy setup.Replaced a Polk Audio with this and a big difference in sound quality.Running a 7.2 system on a Onkyo atmos receiver and all 4K.
Old sub sounded better when I first set this sub up (a bit disappointed) but, after this sub broke-in. Wow, had to turn it down to 50%. Fills 14x28 room with plenty of bass. Great for movies and music.
just what I was expecting. the volume adjustment on the side of the speaker is a great feature, allowing one to vary the bass according to the type of music played as well as personal preferences. i did have to put some rubber matting under the front feet to keep it from "walking" on the hardwood flooring. The quality of the sound is excellent, only a larger speaker would improve it.
BOOM!!!! You really do feel the bass! This subwoofer is awesome! This was my first time putting together a home theatre sound system so i really do not have a baseline, other than a Bose Sound Bar. However I really can't imagine anything better.
Pros: Great bass Great sound Seems well put together
Cons: None so far
This sub sounds great and is pretty affordable when it goes on sale periodically. While the driver is only 10", it puts out decent low end due to the passive radiator on the bottom (also 10") coupled with the internal amp (300 watt RMS, 750 peak). It's not as premium as the Super Cubes, but not everyone has a super high end system (including me). This is a more than worthy addition to your audio set up.
Love this Sub. Tried the 800 but it wasn't enough. So then Artie at Crutchfield suggested going big with an SVS Sub. Wow what a Sub, but way more than I was looking for. So then I came back to the 1000, and it's perfect for what we were wanting. It has a nice low end for Jazz & gospel music. You feel like your sitting right next to the string bass on stage. It also can be turned up to watch a movie and shake the walls if that's your thing. I'm discovering it's kind of fun to do that.
Pros: It can be both subtle for music, and big for movies in a living room.
Cons: If you're looking to blow away 100 of your friends with low end for your party music, keep looking.
Easy plug and play, delivers ground shaking bass, doesn't get any better than that, oh wait a minute it actually can get better, I'll have to buy a second one!
Pros: Easy plug and play
Cons: Can't think of any
Nice sub with wall thumping lows...great addition to a home theater set up. Bought this to help out the sounds for a new turntable recently purchased. Added nice sound/lows when connected via high output terminals, to all my old vinyl records.
Pros: Small size and all the bass needed
Excellent bass levels. I use the LFE channel. I installed it behind the sofas and you can feel it!
Pros: Excellent bass levels. No booming. Different wiring choices.
Cons: No remote
Great sound! Discretely sits beside my entertainment center cabinet with my 55" HDTV atop and other components inside. Allows me to use my ZVOX sound bar for all audio without loss of the bass frequencies.
Pros: Great sound, efficient, discrete and compact.
Cons: A bit pricey.
Tried Klipsch R10sw & was not satisfied. Returned and replaced with Def Tech Pro 1000 & became satisfied. Works well in roughly 400 sq. Ft. Room. Satisfying bottom for 5.1 system.
Always wanted to try a passive radiator sub and this one does not disappoint. Great extension without the boom, perfect for music.needs breaking in a little tight out the box
Pros: Small size good low end definition and extension
Cons: No polarity switch
Purchased this for living room 5.1 system to replace old Kenwood sub that stopped working. Paired with Polk Audio speakers and Denon receiver in my living room for 5.1 setup. I am impressed so far, had it for a few weeks, primarily for movies and TV watching. The bass is distinctive and has made my system sound so much better...sorry I waited so long to get a new sub and super happy I decided on this one.
Pros: Small footprint, very distinctive bass, makes other speakers sound better because they don't have to produce low freq., easy setup out of box, we'll packaged, looks good in corner of room, room size 20x20 +/- and sounds is thunderous...
Cons: None yet and hope that stays true...
Excellent subwoofer. Had the money to purchase the SC4000, but went for the Pro1000 because it had speaker terminals for the my monoblocks tube amplifiers and my speakers so you can use banana jacks for all connections.
Pros: Researched the actual frequency response and found it to be 29-150 Hz +- 3db. Excellent for my needs.
Cons: Definitive Technologies need to publish correct frequency response for their speakers. Stating 18Hz as the lowest response is not likely as that type of accurate response, +- 3db would require a subwoofer costing well into the four figures.
What can I say, AWSOME! Now all my pieces are Definitive Technology. Very pleased with the price and Sub. Service was excellent and delivery was fast. Very pleased
I waited a few months to write a review so the subs would have adequate break in time. I bought 2 Def Tec Pro Sub 1000 to supliment my old JBL Venue Series Stadium speakers which weren't putting out the bass that I never knew I was missing. All I can say is what made me wait so long, the passive radiator design gives massive amounts of low end without the reverb usually associated with a ported design. The low end is very pronounced but controlled due to the closed cabinet design, (the radiator acts as a shock absorber for the powered speaker). I have the levels set through the preamp so they blend with the main speakers as to not be over powering. My system consists of: Emotiva XPA2 power amp (300 watts per channel) Anthem AVM 20 preamp/processor Rega RP1 turntable Bellari tube phono preamp Pioneer Elite CD/DVD JBL Venue Series (Stadium Model) 2 Def Tec Pro 1000 subs I consider my system to be Audiophile on a tight budget
Pros: Phenomenal low end
Just got my second one to fill out my 7.2 set-up. Sweet sub for the money waited for a sale.
Pros: The neighbors are going to hate me now!
Cons: Not made in America.
Already had one of these ProSub 1000 in my media room but wanted a second to diffuse the low frequency sounds (think explosions) better, and this really fits the bill. Now explosions fill the room and rattle the wall. Deep notes come out so clearly.
Pros: Price, sound quality, appearance
Cons: Can't think of any!
so far, so good. have only had sub for a short time and have not cranked up the volume too far yet. i had the def. tech. 800, but it did not have quite enough punch for my system. i also have def. tech. 6500 outdoor speakers which i am very satisfied with.
Pros: good punch for a small sub. i like the side vol. adjustment control.
Cons: none so far
amzazing sub! doesnt take up a lot of space which is key. more than enough to get the room shaking - if desired - but not too much that drives out the sound of the music. but this sub and you will not regret it!!!
Pros: sounds amazing, can adjust sound to preference, small in size so it doesnt cramp the room.
Cons: none to this point.
The unit sounded great and met all of my expectations, but after about 15 months, a strange high pitched static sound started intermittently appearing. After 20 months, the sound was constant. I'll be looking at repair options soon, but this has obviously been a disappointment.
Pros: great sound, compact size
Cons: only worked for 15 months
Setup could not be easier. I was a tad worried as I had all components of my home theater installed by a local company and they did all the setup, tuning and configuration. I simply connected the LFE cable and power cord on the back, set the crossover to where the old one was set (made sure my receiver was set at the same range) and then ran auto setup on my receiver and I was in business. If you can read the instructions that come with the subwoofer and the receiver, it's not at all difficult. This model replaced a 10 year-old DT subwoofer that apparently blew something internally in the amp and probably was not worth fixing. This is an upgrade as the old DT only had a single front-mounted speaker. I can definitely hear the added bass with the pressure-coupled low bass radiator on the bottom. I actually like the volume control on the side where I can easily get to it vs on the back as was my old model. I actually also like the indicator light on the back better. It's red when there is no power going to it from the receiver, but turns green when there is. On the old model, the indicator was off when no power and red when it was on! I was also concerned with finding a subwoofer that would fit in the same space as the old and while this was a few inches longer, it was pretty much similar in other dimensions so it worked out great. Anybody want to repair an old DT subwoofer? It's yours if you want it! ;-)
Pros: Great sound and features, easy setup. Was up and running in minutes. About $100 more than what I paid for a single speaker front-mounted DT subwoofer in 2006.
Cons: None so far.
My 5.2 surround sound system sounds sweet with 2 of these subs ...
Pros: My 5.2 surround sound system sounds sweet with 2 of these subs ... These subs are really worth the money -
Cons: Only con is I can only hook up 2 subs in my current system- LOL ...Peace out -
This unit is well built and quite compact, considering it's housing a 10" driver and a 10" passive radiator. As for the performance, let me just say that this unit was at half power when I played it first, and my hardwood floors started creaking as if an earthquake was happening. I had to turn down this woofer to very low levels in order to not rattle the whole place. It must be the radiator firing downward onto the floor. It's actually a great design, because these waves seem to fill the room better than my last sub, which only had a forward firing driver. Also, I'm able to get some very deep notes form my setup now, with a more uniform profile in my listening space. I'm pretty sure this unit has the performance of a 12" sub from a few years back, while being much smaller. To my ear, the bass from this unit is the right balance of punch and rumble. I'm very happy with the value it brings all around. I can only recommend it.
Pros: Excellent performance. Construction feels solid. Very compact if compared to others in this product class. You would never need anything bigger or more expansive than this for the average living room.
Cons: The volume button on the side is a bit weird, I'm not crazy about it. It's low profile enough to not protrude, but it faces against my couch and isn't easily reachable because of this. Not that you use this often, anyways.
First time buying a Definitive Technologies sub. This was recommended by Crutchfield. In my experience with their sales people, if they recommend it, It's good. This was bought to replace an old Infinity 12 inch 250watt sub that still really kicks, but this Pro Sub kicks its butt. Great clean hard hitting bass. A real solid piece of equipment. I highly recommend this sub.
Pros: Great sub for the money.
Cons: Wish I would have tried Definitive technologies before
I'm very happy with this sub. It gives nice, deep, solid sounds.
Pros: Price, size, quality, sound
Cons: No 180 switch in the rear event needed.
I have a 25 year old Denon receiver and Infinity SM 100 system that has given me years of great music. Recently I re-foamed the woofer sourrounds on the Infinity floor speakers, and wondered what more I might do to enhance and continue enjoying this vintage combo. The online Crutchfield rep. suggested the Def. Tech. ProSub 1000 subwoofer. I received and installed it today, and have been listening to it all evening. In a word, WOW!! This thing delivers exactly as advertised. In a fairly large room with a vaulted ceiling the low-end presence now is just incredible. I'm looking forward to many more years of great music. Thanks.
Pros: Just as advertised
Bought a scratch and dent unit. looks and sounds just as good the the new one I bought earlier.
Pros: Great Bass
Very powerful bass from a rather small enclosure. It will rattle your floor and walls if you turn it up. I ended up using a subwoofer acoustic decoupler as to not disturb my downstairs tenant too much. Looks great and fits in well with my home theater set up.
Pros: Powerful bass, goes very low.
Cons: Better with movies than music.
It looks very small for 300watt amp but dont let size fool u. The BASS is smoothe and very full i cant beleive the way it filled up a 16 x 14 feet room. i have heard Def Tech Super Cube but this one was more detail in my book. In a few words its one of the best economical Sub thats great and fit in with your decor.
Pros: smoothe bass and very acurate with music. nice look and size
Cons: Needs to make a bigger one
I was a little worried ordering this after hearing it at a local retailer. I don't think they had the side volume turned up, so it sounded weak. I kept seeing tons of positive reviews, so I took the plunge. I am glad I did. This sub is awesome!! It will give you earth moving bass and zero distortion. It's clean and tight, not muddy at all. I am super impressed!!
Pros: More power then you will ever need. Easy volume control for tweaking.
Cons: Doesn't do feet massages!
Sounds great at high and low volume levels
Pros: Adjustable crossover
Very happy with it! This is my first subwoofer and am impressed with the deep rich notes
Ordering this was seamless and the only thing I agonized over was how much boom I needed for my space. Delivery was timely and the packaging was excellent. There is nothing like the odor of new electronics when you first open the box. My first impression was "Wow! where is this going to fit!?" based on how large it was and I was afraid it would be much too large for my space. I ended up putting it in the only logical place for me which was behind my entertainment center. Since it is in a corner that was the best choice. It would have looked real nice as it's own little piece of furniture next to our love seat but that was implacable. Sound was too good to be true! I had no idea what I was really missing in my movie watching with all the rumble. When combined with the rest of the system I received, I feel confidant I got a real winner for any movie night we may entertain with our friends! Great design, Great sound, Great customer service all the way around from point of sale to follow up.
Pros: Big sound, easy set up, good packaging
Cons: A little too big but that's more just a personal thing. If I ever convert our split level into the family room then it would be much better
Bought this as a replacement for an old Crutchfield veteran, a late 90's Yamaha YST-SW160. This puppy has the power to do all the heavy lifting for any bass intensive movie soundtracks out there, as well as providing very tight bass for music. The 1000 is just what you need for any 5.1, 7.1, whatever .1 you throw at it. However here's a major hint if you have a whatever .2 receiver (like my Onkyo TX-NR1010, another Crutchfield veteran). Don't diss off your old subwoofer. If you have that extra subwoofer output, experiment....even with room-correction software like Audessey, YPAO, et.al. The Prosub will give you the major booms, blasts, and whatever in any bass intensive movie soundtrack...but you'll find that a second sub will be of value if you use the same receiver for music..after tweeking it (both with room-correction software and with your ears (or, very old school, with a sound meter and your ears)). It will definitely be worth it.
Pros: Impressive performance on its own, even better with a .2 "buddy" (no matter how old it is).
Cons: Letting that extra subwoofer jack on a .2 receiver go to waste.
ive been looking to upgrade to this brand for years. Since i did an hearing a couple years before the brand has always interested me since i have Paradigm all the way around except the sub. I finally got it home and its better than I dreamed. The lows that I was looking for from my old sub are finally hear. During the movies it provides all the rights lows and hard hitting rumble that is require to bring the movies to life. Enjoyed it a lot. Music wise it performs smoothly with that the perfect soft lows in the classical to the smooth and continues rich sound of rhythm and blues to the pounding and determined beat of the new dance and of course the solid beat of rock...it never seems overwhelmed or out done. a very very well made and good sub for the money.
Pros: well made solid speaker that delivers in every range mode and or feel...easy to setup and play
I got the ProCinema 1000 system and it sounds really good. I just got the system set up, and they sound pretty good already. I'm running a Pioneer SC-1222-K digital amp (120W per channel @ 8 ohms). There's a lot to learn with this system, and there's still some adjusting to do, but I'm really satisfied with the sonic reproduction so far. For the record, I've been completely hooked on the sound of my Denon PMA-777 and KEF 104/2 with Kube for 30 years and have never found anything that sounds as sweet, and that includes this system. That being said, this is one of the best sounding 5.1 speaker systems I've heard.
Pros: Sound great Look good
Cons: Inset wire posts make it hard to use bare wires, banana plugs are a must Shiny black finish collects dust (OK, that's more because I live in a rural setting, and everything's dusty!)
It's the job done. Powerful, made my floor resonate. Worth the money.
Although I ultimately sent back this sub since I went for a Klipsch system, this is one of the tightest, most immersive subs I have ever heard. I have for years had a 12" sub in a music system, and the DT 1000 put it to shame. The bass exhibits none of the boom of less controlled subs, but the power to immerse the listening room in low frequency effects is plentiful. No distortion, no side effects, just clean, tight bass. A side note: I didn't notice the percussive effects of top caliber subs but then I only evaluated this using movies and not music--I just may not have noticed.
Pros: Tight, clean, room-jarring bass without boominess.
It is good sub but i Thought it will have a little bit more power, i preffere the klipsch sw-450 better than this one i know this have better specs but i heard the sw-450 before and it has more punch.
Pros: Good depth, great look, small and lighweight.
Cons: Need more punch.
This Subwoofer adds so much to the overall listening experience. The volume level knob on the side is handy.
Pros: Sounds great. Easy to setup. Easy to use.
Upon extensive research, and various component comparisons , the. Homie was clearly in in the direction of the DT ProSub 1K. The soundstage mated with PSB's and motiva front end is outstanding, while still in the break-in stages of usage. Thus, the units richness will only improve over time.
Pros: Quality build (fit & finish). Compact size, solid packaging.
Great sub easy to set up gives me the bass i was looking for you can feel the floor vibrating at times makes you feel like you're right in the middle of all the action in the movie it's quiet when it needs to be and makes and explosion live i am very happy with it was a great buy (scratch & dent) i saw nothing with it at all it's simply awesome
I brought the PROSUB 1000 to replace my Mirage BPS-100 and this sub has a tight and clean sound. Perfect upgrade!! Highly recommend!!!
Pros: Highly quality subwoofer 300 watts of power
ProSub 1000 produces solid low end from all my sources. Seems crisp and clear with fairly simple inputs and controls. I like it.
Pros: clean, solid bass. reasonable cost sturdy construction
Cons: owners instructions a bit sketchy -- could use some tips for setting up the amp/receiver. took a while to get parameters set properly -- still working at fine tuning it.
I read the other reviews and all were accurate. This is outstanding subwoofer.
Pros: Nice size and great sound
Hard hitting bass for a ten inch sub nice clean bass. Will rattle the walls and windows if you want it to bought scratch and dent works fine.Good quality sub.
Pros: Price and sound, good quality product
After a little research and reading some reviews I decided to upgrade my old 75 watt sub to this Definitive Technology ProSub 1000. I purchased a scratch and dent model online from Crutchfield for less. The sales representative assured me that it would be functionally fine and that it would also carry the same warranty. I was pleasantly surprised after opening the box to find that there were no scratches on it at all. It was just packed in a little different packing material instead of the original. I made a phone call to the Tech Support with Crutchfield to get professional advice for adjusting the speaker settings in my Onkyo receiver which helped remove some of the guess work on my part. This sub looks and sounds great. I would highly recommend that to achieve the best sound from this sub that you place it in a corner.
Pros: This sub has clean base with true to life sound. The volume adjustment on the side makes it easy to make adjustments. The construction of the cabinet is solid. Unbelievable sound from a small unit.
Sub as plenty of power for large room and tight sound no booming
Pros: size and price
I really like this brand and I really wanted to give them a shot. Definitive Technology's customer service is excellent and they really do take care of you. Unfortinatly, I went through two Prosub 600's and then a Prosub 1000 all within a month's time. The amplifier kept going bad and I would get the "red flashing light" of death. I would give this review only 1 star but I think this is something Definitive Technology will fix with some good investigating and some better Q.A. I think their speakers are built very well - they just need to work out a couple more kinks. Their Pro1000 surround sound speakers on the other hand I've had good luck with and have been quite happy with them so far!
Pros: A+ Customer Support, Built like a rock, Sounds good and clear while it works
Cons: Amplifier circut kept blowing, went through 3 of them (Prosub 600 and Prosub 1000) in a month. Ultimately gave up.
I spent awhile trying to find the perfect sub for my home theater trying to amplify our home theater experience. This sub by far exceeds my expectations. The deep bass is unreal!! I have yet to fully break in the sub and it's already the best sub I have ever owned. As soon as I hooked it up I put in Star Trek into the darkness and was blown away by its power. An absolute must buy. I have never owned a sub by definitive to compare to but I seriously doubt that I will ever have to search for a better one. Very, very satisfied.
Pros: Deep bass, easy hook up, convenient volume control, pure awesomeness
Cons: None as of yet
$500 is a lot to spend on a subwoofer. In fact this sub cost more than my Denon 1913 receiver. So I purchased the prosub 800 first. I recently upgraded to this one and an incredible difference was noticeable right away. This sub has great bass, not the extreme chest pounding bass from $1000+ 5hz 600 watt subs, but for this price and at this size its beyond what I expected. Which is good. The bass is pretty accurate and tight. It all depends on how you set it up. In my experience this sub sounds best at about 35%-40% volume on the side knob and I have my receiver set at 0db (sub sitting in a corner). At reference level volumes (about 68.5 on my receiver) I hear nearly no distortion. It hits hard and fades quickly. At 60% on the knob at 0db it cant handle most blurays that i watch, I hear about 20% distortion, which is no big surprise most subs cdo this under $1k. I've demoed ALOT of subs. Bowers and Wilkins, Klipsch, Bic and Polk had some comparable subs that I looked at. Def Tech won me over with performance and quality. This is an outstanding sub, for the price, if you want to stay under $500 I would start at the prosub 1000.
Pros: Price, 18hz is fair, build quality, SOUND, ability to adjust volume and crossover.
Cons: I would like to see 14hz in this price range, short power cable, may hop on wood floors.
Great bass from a relatively small package. Love the side volume-control.
I replaced an aging Velodyne sub with this unit. I was worried it would not be enough punch for the room size..14x18,,,it works great..use mostly for video so far but the unit seems very much up to the task. Nice sound for a small package.
Pros: Size and price
Cons: Non that I have found..
This was a replacement for an older MTX with issues powering off. Can't say I've really pushed it but seems to put out tons of bass. Still have to run the set up with the Onkyo surround but that should make it even better. The book says there maybe a (turn on) thump which I have noticed a few times. Overall seems to be a good sub.
Pros: Small footprint Clean bass
Cons: Occasional turn on thump
Our living room, dining room and kitchen are interconnected under a high vaulted ceiling. I wanted to fill this expansive space with plenty of bass. My new Pro Sub 1000 has power to spare. I am very pleased with this product.
Pros: Easily accessible rotary-style volume switch on side of unit to control the level of bass. Attractive and well-built appearance.
This is the 2nd sub added to my system, and I am happy with sound. I like the lower frequency range. Takes up little space.
Pros: good sound and power versatile connections.
First, I'm no audiophile. I replaced a 6 year old $1000 Velodyne that just decided to quit. Didn't want to spend that much this time. For the price, this speaker is everybite as good, if not better. Sounds great in a 24 by 24 foot great room. Easy to adjust. I highly recommend it.
Unbelievable tones and range. Kickin' bass produstion.
Pros: Easy to set up, volume and range is great plus with the heavy bass tracks on BluRay movies.
Easy to set up and sounds great. Great addition to my home theater system.
Pros: great sound.
This equipment is the best you can buy. This sub is awesome! The bass will rattle the windows if you want it to. Very pleased with the definitive tech brand.
Pros: Great sound. Great looks. Very high quality!
I bought this sub when my Polk 125 went south after 5 months. Plugged the Definitive in today, played a variety of music and WOW what a difference! Clear, well-defined bass while still being rich and plenty powerful for our large living room. Own a couple of Definitive floor speakers, with which I am also very pleased. They make great, well-engineered products.
I replaced a Paradigm 10" sub with this and the difference is incredible. The ProSub has deeper, richer bass but is tighter as well. I had forgotten how good bass should sound. It certainly fills my room and I can rattle the walls if when I want to.
Pros: Great value. Much larger sound than expected from a small enclosure.
Cons: On a hard floor it will vibrate and move so it needs to be placed on a raised platform to prevent movement.
My husband is the main consumer of technology in our household. He was a nice guy and put this on his Christmas list. So, I being a nice gal, got it for him. I assume it will be awesome, but right now it's under the tree.
Crutchfield is the best for product info and suggestions on product choises to fit your needs. They also have the best ship and delivery. I also read Pro 1000 reviews and feel they may for me be a little over rated. I expected a little more punch at 300 watts RMS, but with more hours the sub seems to be performing with a little more punch. The base is solid and with the Monster sub cable and resetting all other speakers to small it does enhance not only effects but some voice quality. I also puchased the pro 2000 center speaker which is accurate and solid. It makes every thing much more realistic in all programming. I don't agree with hearing it a 1/4 mile away, perhaps 20 ft. out side windows and doors closed. For the price a good value, if your looking for earth shaking spend the bucks and get DT s 1200 watt, if you are just lookong to enhance your other speakers and have theater base then the pro 1000 is a good start. I have a 7.2 system and may add a second Pro1000.
Pros: tight base, small foot print, good price thru Crutchfield
This sub rocks... It has quite a bit of power and fills the room with sound. It is very clear and not muddy like some subs I have heard. This was a great buy although my wife is not happy with the house shaking!
Pros: It takes the music experience to a entirely new level
I purchased this Sub as part of the ProCinema 1000 package. Wow - This set takes movie watching to a whole new level. I'm glad I spent the money on this speaker package. Thanks Crutchfield!
Pros: looks, sound, quality
Love it! The old Boston Acoustics never sounded so good!
Pros: Couldn't be better.
Replaced 2 NHT SW-2's powered with a NHT SA-2 amp with this sub. As expected, I lost some of the deep bass boom on movie soundtracks but for normal listening, the sub seems to blend in pretty seamlessly.
Pros: Build quality, ease of installation.
Cons: Lack of a manual power switch. Not quite as much deep bass as I was used to.
Awesome, upgraded from a Klipsch 100 sub. I love it (the new one)
Purchased as part of the Pro-Cinema 1000 speaker set-up. Great sound and quality. I would recommend this set-up.
Pros: Sound, appearance, compactness
This subwoofer is great! The clarity, power and bass of this subwoofer are awesome and it is much smaller than you would think for the power it delivers. The only thinhgs that would make it better are (at least one of): 1. Trigger input for power on/off so you don't have to rely on it's auto on/off feature, which can require some trial and error for setting it up. 2. Remote control for power and voulme control. 3. Manual power switch.
Pros: Rich clear and deep bass and a lot of power out of a surprisingly small box. Very economical for what it delivers.
Cons: Proper auto on/off power control requires fine tuning (balancing) of output levels of receiver and subwoofer.
Tight clean bass, this sub has made a believer out of me. I'm impressed by the quality and workmanship of this sub and will be purchasing a matching set of bookshelf speakers to go with it.
Pros: Relative compact size
Cons: No on/off switch
I purchased this Sub as part of the ProCinema 1000 package. The bass is very impressive. This thing rocks the house! I think it is worth the extra money to go for the 1000 series. I have it connected to the Denon AVR-1911. Thanks Crutchfield for answering all of my questions!
EXTREMELY SATISFIED WITH THIS SUBWOOFER. INSTALLED IT AS INSTRUCTED, SET X-OVER ALLTHE WAY UP AND ADJUSTED VOLUME TO MATCH REST OF SYSTEM. THE CONVENIENT VOLUME CONTROL ALLOWS EASY ADJUSTMENT FOR BACKGROUND MUSIC, CONCERTS OR MOVIE SPECIAL EFFECTS. JORDAN FROM CRUTCHFIELD MARKETING HELPED ME CHOOSE THIS UNIT. A GREAT SUB AND IN MY PRICE RANGE.
Purchased the Sub in March 2011. The first one I recieved did not work. However, Cruthfield sent one out the next day and i just shipped the old one back after I got the new one - very easy exchange Pared the Def Tech 1000 with the Def Tech Mythos SSA-42 Soundbar and a Pioneer SVX 820 reciever and now have a great sound system for my Pioneer Elite plasma TV. Sub puts out well balanced base and integrates well with the Def Tech Mythos Soundbar. Love the base adjustment on the side for easy access. Room is 14x19 and you can really feel the base which makes movies really come alive. Outstanding Sub at a fair price.
I'd purchased the ProSub 800 at first, but the sound wasn't enough given my room size, about 16x12x9 with an open floor plan. The sound is perfect now. I went with (4) DT 6.5R in ceiling speakers, ProCenter 1000 and a Yamaha RX-797 as my receiver. Very happy with the purchase and the results. It sounds a lot better than the Bose system in ceiling speakers I was looking to install. No problems whatsoever returning the ProSub 800. Very happy with crutchfield.
Great packaging. Excellent Looks. Really needs to be shipped with a carpenter to pound all the nails back into the wall!!! I thought my Klipsch was awesome but this blows it out of the water. Im currently looking to replace all my speakers with Def tech!!! I actually really have nails that have backed out of our staircase and along one wall Had to reduce the on device volume to 25% and the pioneer elite is set to -1.5DB. Room size is 20" X 26" square with an open back wall and this thing fills my entire house with base!
I originally got this to go along with DefTech StudioMonitor 350s for a living room 5.1 setup -- picked up a pair of DefTech BP7004s when they were on sale, but kept the ProSub in the mix, and run the SM350s thru them as surrounds, balances the room for movie special effects -- the ProSub is very capable, has never run into anything it can't handle for movies while keeping its musicality intact -- for the price, this is about as good and versatile as you can get -- and I auditioned a LOT of subs in this price range before I bought.
best money ever spent! fills even large rooms with thunderous, accurate bass. I listen to all types of music and use it as part of my 7.1 home theater system. Rap music throws out all the bass without bottoming out and stays tight with Rock music. I barely even have it turned up. love it!
This is a great sub for the money. If you are looking to stay in this price range and fill a large room, I woulld highly recommend.

Overview: The Definitive Technology ProSub 1000 is an advanced state-of-the-art technology powered subwoofer with a built-in high-power, high-current amplifier and sophisticated electronic crossover, in combination with an active front-firing 10-inch high excursion woofer and 10-inch bottom-mounted passive radiator for massive bass with superior speed, control, and detail. The Definitive Technology ProSub 1000 is a compact, high quality, powered subwoofer that can be used in your home theater or music speaker system.
Passive Radiator Design: The ProSub 1000 features a 300-watt (RMS) amplifier driving a high-excursion 10-inch front-mounted direct-radiating woofer that is pressure-coupled to a 10-inch low-bass passive radiator on the bottom of the enclosure. The net radiating area of the ProSub 1000 is 39% greater than a single 12 inch woofer but with better speed, pitch definition, and control.
PowerField Technology Amplifier: The ProSub 1000 incorporates Definitive's proprietary PowerField technology, by which the amplifier is specifically engineered in conjunction with the driver for optimum load matching and power transfer characteristics. The Definitive ProSub 1000 powered subwoofer incorporates a unique, patented, digitally-coupled infinite power source amplifier with a high-current direct coupled power supply and discrete MOSFET output devices to ensure perfect high-definition resolution and reproduction of the most dynamic program material and demanding sub-bass transients. Construction quality is absolutely state-of-the-art, with only the highest quality components used including mil-spec glass epoxy circuit boards and precision resistors and capacitors for many years of faultless superior performance.
High-Definition Subwoofer: The powerful, high-definition 10" polymer subwoofer driver is specifically engineered by Definitive Technology to deliver rock-solid low distortion bass, reaching down to the lowest subsonic frequencies (18-150Hz), with superior transient response. The special ultra-stiff, low-mass cone (for super-fast transient response) is joined to a specially formulated surround and long-throw voice coil and spider. The ultra-rigid basket is engineered to hold the woofer's massive magnet structure and large voice coil in absolute alignment. The high temperature voice coil is made of aluminum wound with triple insulated ultra-pure copper wire and baked in epoxy for increased power handling.
Non-Resonant Cabinet: The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Resonance and vibration can add unwanted distortion as well as drain away important energy from the system. The Definitive Technology ProSub 1000 powered subwoofer utilizes a monocoque cabinet, which has been specifically engineered to be totally inert and vibration free, to ensure you of pure sonic reproduction. Monocoque means that the cabinet is of a unitized construction where all panels are permanently joined together into one solid structure. The cabinet walls themselves are high-density medite fused together by space-age polymer adhesives. The front and rear baffles are extra thick and the cabinet, itself, incorporates multiple internal braces to ensure total solidity.
Protection Circuits: The Definitive Technology ProSub 1000 features two protection circuits that ensure that the subwoofer can never be overdriven.
Integrated/Adjustable Feet: The ProSub 1000 features four integrated feet with rubber tips so you can place it securely and safely on your home's floor. Each foot's height is adjustable to help you place the powered sub on an uneven surface.
Placement: The Definitive Technology powered subwoofer has been designed to operate at frequencies generally below 150 Hz. Because low-frequency information in this range essentially is non-directional, your subwoofer can be located anywhere in your listening room that is most convenient. Also the continuously variable low-pass filter operate at a very fast roll-off, ensuring great performance wherever you place the subwoofer. There are, however, some general rules that you should bear in mind when locating the powered sub.
Volume Control: The ProSub 1000 features a convenient front-side-mounted volume control that makes adjustments fast and easy. This precision level control allows you to perfectly adjust the volume of the subwoofer to match your system and room as well as to fulfill your own personal sonic preferences.
Variable Low-Pass Crossover: The Definitive Technology ProSub 1000 powered subwoofer has a continuously adjustable low-pass filter control which allows you to choose a roll-off of from 40 to 150 Hz for the high end of the subwoofer. This unique "dual stage" roll-off (24dB/oct) is extremely steep which ensures perfect blending with your main speakers as well as eliminating unwanted midrange from the subwoofer. This is especially important because it gives you much greater flexibility in placing your subwoofer in your room without being able to hear where it is located.
Note: The low-pass crossover is only supported by the powered subwoofer's speaker-level inputs.
Auto Turn-On Circuit: The powered subwoofer has a special power circuit which automatically turns the powered subwoofer on when a signal is fed to the loudspeaker and turns it off when there is no signal present, so it does not require an on-off switch.
LED Indicator: The red LED on the back panel of the powered subwoofer will light up when a signal is sensed and the amplifier turns on. It will automatically turn off with the powered subwoofer, a little while after the signal is discontinued.
Line-Level & Speaker-Level Connections: The Definitive Technology ProSub 1000 powered subwoofer has a complete range of inputs and outputs to allow easy and effective hookup to any system. The ProSub 1000 has a separate direct-in LFE low-level input. Speaker-level inputs are provided in case you do not have a subwoofer output.
LFE Input: The Definitive Technology powered subwoofer has a low-level direct LFE input for Dolby Digital soundtracks, which bypasses the crossover network. If you are connecting the subwoofer to an AV receiver without a dedicated subwoofer or LFE preamp output, but does features a stereo RCA output, you will need to use a stereo RCA cable along with an RCA Y-adapter.
Note: When using the LFE input with a receiver that has an internal x-over, you should set the x-over on the sub to 150Hz.
Speaker Level In: The Speaker Level inputs (binding posts) are designed to be used on receivers or amplifiers that do not incorporate any RCA type subwoofer outputs. If your receiver is equipped with an RCA type subwoofer outputs, these speaker level inputs should not be utilized.
Speaker Level Output: The ProSub 1000 also features speaker level outputs (binding posts), so you can connect your front (main speakers) through the powered subwoofer. The ProSub 1000 has a built-in speaker level high-pass crossover preset at 80 Hz (6dB/oct).
